Following the success of its first film Yasmine, Origin Artistic is set to release its very first Bruneian Hari Raya flick in local cinemas nationwide on June 14, in time for the start of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Directed and produced by award-winning director Siti Kamaluddin, the new film, ‘Hari Minggu Yang Ke-Empat’ (HMYK4), is a heart-warming drama-comedy about family forgiveness and second chances. It is the first Hari Raya movie to be produced by a local filmmaker.

The film stars Kai Anuar aka Babu Si Nur, Liyana Yus, lan Zulkifli and Terry Wong.

News of the film release was announced yesterday at a press conference at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT). Among those in attendance were HMYK4 cast members and production crew, including director and producer Siti Kamaluddin.

HMYK4 is the culmination of experience gained from producing Yasmine, and sees many firsts.
According to Siti Kamaluddin, she said, “This new film is different from Yasmine, as in Yasmine a mix of standard Malay and Bruneian Malay was used, but HMYK4 is very Bruneian,” she said, adding that the idea of doing the movie came up while she was working on her new script just right after Chinese New Year.”

“I thought, why not make a movie on Hari Raya as there has never been one on it, and it will be a good topic of conversation during our Hari Raya visits.”

“I hope everyone will come and support the film and get it trending with the hashtag #liatsekampung come in groups to watch it as it is always fun to have a good laugh together,” said Siti.

“Unlike Yasmine, this film is also a very interesting model for me, as I worked with a Brunei-friendly budget and our cast is fully local. Hopefully we can draw a good response for the film and maybe progress to making a few movies a year.

“What I find as a director and writer – and I am also involved in the production side – is that I have to work extra hard. We multitask and we work with a much smaller team compared to Yasmine and this is a much scaled-down project.”

On the choice of the cast, Siti said the new actors were selected after viewing audition tapes. However, Kai Anuar’s (Babu Si Nur) talent was spotted by her during Brunei Film Blitz, which Origin Artistic participated in as part of the Brunei December Festival held in collaboration with Brunei Tourism.

“During Brunei Film Blitz, I got to watch a short film of one of the winners – Kai – in the open category. I got to see Kai as a different character from Babu Si Nur, and I was amazed to see how talented he was… I had him in mind (as part of the cast) for the script,” she said.

Talking about local films in general, Siti said making movies is not just simply shooting and screening them in the cinema, but the film profession requires a lot of career responsibilities and involves many interconnected disciplines and skills.

“It is a very technical job but is also very creative and corporations play a big role in supporting the local film. This (HMYK4) is not just a one off television show… 10 years from now you can still refer back and see the movie,” she said. “For me HMYK4 is very iconic as it our very first Hari Raya movie and it will probably be popular in other countries as well. We look forward to the screening.”

Main cast member Kai Anuar beamed that it has been a pleasure to be part of the film and that it has been one of the best experiences he’s ever had in his life.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the filming process… from pre-production with rehearsals and script reading, right up to sessions with the director and the other cast. All this was done to build chemistry before the actual shooting, and to get a feel of the emotional states we should be and to familiarise ourselves all the filming dos and don’ts,” he said.

As for the star of Yasmine, Liyana Yus, the new film was a much less nerve-wracking experience and more of a chance to display the acting skills she has honed in the previous production.

“I just applied what I’ve learnt from Yasmine, and at the same time shared my experience with the new actors. For me perhaps the next challenge will be to progress from playing a teenager role as in Yasmine to a character aged in the 30s,” said the actress.

Siti expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support for the film from various corporations such as Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd, Brunei Press, Radio Television Brunei, Jollibee Brunei, Archipelago Development Corporation, Tiong Jaya, Sri Sentosa (Hertz), Cuckoo Brunei, Nazmi Textile Mall, Aiking Trading Co, Harwood, Golden Corporation, Colourland and Smart Paint, Rainfresh, and Brunei Halal.
She also accorded appreciation to the MPRT, Department of Civil Aviation, Royal Brunei Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department, the Ministry of Health, as well as her Brunei fans for their support of the film.

“I love making films for Brunei and wish to thank the Brunei audience for their continuing support. I hope to produce more films from Brunei to continue sharing our stories to the global audience,” she said. Source: Lyna Mohd of Borneo Bulletin.

Jackson Ting deliver his welcoming speech in inspiring entrepreneurs of the future

Jackson’s speech during the opening:

Being an old acquaintance of Dato Seri Lau Kung Ching, Managing Director of Good Home, who first started through all the constant hardships, challenges and failures and now successfully establishing himself as an accomplished and well-respected businessman, it shows that despite the limited education, it is his spirit, courage and determination that moved him to where he is today. Furthermore his principled morale mindset where he is not discouraged by the economic downturn and instead he sees in every difficulty lies opportunities.

An individual’s success and achievements shall not be put in parallel to how high an individual’s education is but also the spirt and the mindset that one holds. Such titles like professors or doctors show one that have all the theoretical knowledge but without the courageous spirt to push him/herself towards the limit and the eagerness to strive for what he/she wants, he/she will forever maintain in the same position.

The launch of Good Home was duly inspired by the current and still prevalent consumer trend for convenience; the desire to be a one-stop for easy comparison, product variety and even providing business opportunities. The business also hopes to increase employment opportunities.

Jollibee, outlet No.16

Jollibee’s 16th outlet along Jalan Muara Highway, Spg 652

Jollibee (Brunei) is moving at a fast pace as it opened its 16th store at Jalan Muara Highway last weekend. Furthermore, it’s their second drive thru after having one at Sengkurong. The recent outlet is the 16th for Jollibee (Brunei).

So it’s safe to say that Jollibee hits the Bruneians’ taste and it has been an ongoing success since its inception in 1987. Recently, Jollibee has opened its first outlet in Europe (Milan) and the response has been overwhelming. It will also soon open its door in the USA. So you can say that Jollibee is a worldwide favourite.

Present during the launch was Mr. Rodel Alcantara, AVP & Market Head for Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia & Europe, Jollibee Foods Corporation and he was very pleased with the efforts of Jollibee (Brunei) in expanding their brand and also to those involved in the project of the Jollibee drive-thru. Jollibee is also a strong believer in social media in helping creating awareness for the presence of Jollibee in Brunei.

The first 100 customers with a minimum purchase of BND 10 will receive a Jollibee Huggable pillow and it was a huge success.

Congratulations once again to Jollibee (Brunei) on your 16th outlet. Looking forward to more outlets in Brunei, being the leading fast food franchise, in Brunei Darussalam. For social media updates, you can follow @jollibeebrunei

Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, Acting Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance), Ministry of Development, during the press conference earlier this morning

The Ministry of Development through the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (DEPR) held a press conference this morning to socialize the addition of Thursday to the ‘No Plastic Bag Weekend Initiative’ towards No Plastic Bag Everyday.

Present at the session was the Acting Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance), Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, who addressed members of the media with regards to the extension. In her speech, Dr Nor Imtihan shared that the launching ceremony will be held on Thursday, 19th April 2018 in conjunction with Earth Day 2018, which appropriately carries the theme “End Plastic Pollution”.

The Acting Permanent Secretary also shared that the remaining days will be added in phases with Wednesday tentatively to be included in July 2018, Tuesday in October 2018 and Monday to be added in December 2018 towards realizing the Government’s objective of No Plastic Bag Everyday by 2019. The initiative will initially involve stores and businesses that are currently listed under the No Plastic Bag Weekend initiative but will be extended to other consumers of plastic bags such as retails shops (kedai-kedai runcit), restaurants and markets/stalls (gerai-gerai).

The No Plastic Bag Weekend initiative was initially launched on 26th March 2011 to include Saturday and Sunday, with Friday being added on 17th February 2012. The objective of the initiative is to promote the concept of 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in order to minimize the volume of waste sent to the country’s landfill. To date, fifty stores and businesses have voluntarily registered to participate in the initiative.

It all started with Saturdays and Sundays back in 2011

Rano’s thoughts: This is indeed a great move finally being implemented. I remember back in 2015, it was mentioned that JASTRe wanted to implement the no-plastic-bag initiative on Thursday, but didn’t materialized. Soon, this Thursday 19th March, the Minister of Development will officially launch the additional day of Thursday to the “No Plastic Bag weekend initiative” so yes, it’s finally happening.

While supermarkets and some convenient stores are already used to this initiatives, the ones that will be the tougher to educate are the ones at the pasar malam or gerai stalls. For decades, they have been used to shelling out plastics to consumers and this stigma will be the hardest to break. Dr Nor Imtihan is confident that with great awareness and how we influence, it can play a huge role in shifting their mindsets and understand the implications of plastic bags to our environment.

The policies in supermarket is already a great reminder of me that I have to mentally prepare a recycle bag in my car, in case that I might need to buy something at the supermarket. If the supermarkets don’t have this policy, I wouldn’t have thought of having a spare recycle bag in my car. So that policy is a great tool to begin with to train and be alert on small things like “no plastic bags” that can have a huge positive impact.

Good job, JASTRe, on taking this idea into a reality. And do open up an Instagram account soon so we, as social influencers, will help to spread the word around by a push of a button 😀

Spectacle 2018: Eminent Art

Something to look forward to at Universiti Brunei Darussalam – Spectacle 2018: Eminent Art. It was launched this morning at the Chancellor Hall, UBD. It was officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Ayub Sadiq, Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs), UBD.

70 final year students are exhibiting their innovative art and design capstone projects and this will be part of their final assessments which will be evaluated by Dr. Martie Geiger-Ho, Senior Lecturer, Arts & Creative Technology, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UBD and Hj Osman bin Hj Mohammad, Adjunct Lecturer, Arts & Creative Technology, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UBD.

Spectacle 2018 gives the final year students the chance to showcase their artworks and installation and of course, their talents which are translated to the end product. Of course, the public are more than welcome to pay a visit and witness what our locals are able to produce in terms of their efforts and creativity, in hopes to elevate Brunei’s creative industries.

Most of the students I interviewed shared that their ideas of their installations are inspired from their personal experiences. One artist, Fikri Yunus, shared his personal story one how he was a shy person in nature and not being able to be expressive or showing signs of confidence. For his project, he created a cocoon installation, depicting a human being coming out of the cocoon. Yes, the person in the cocoon is Fikri himself where he has morphed into a more confident person and feeling more secured around people. One of the interesting installation to look at when you do visit the Spectacle 2018.

I also noticed more paper artwork being used in artwork displays. Check out the installations such as “Harmonized Disparity” by Nurbazilah binti Bahari, “Brief Insight of Women in Brunei” by Nursheila binti Idnin and “Quillosophy” by Ikmal Atifah binti Awang Mohamad. I really appreciate their efforts on presenting their artworks through paper cuts.

I was just impressed with the ideas that the students have presented in their final assessments. I could just carry on and talked more on it but it would defeat the purpose as I want to encourage you to pay a visit to Spectacle 2018. Furthermore, the entry is FREE for the public. You will be impressed with the talents we have.

"
Some of the installations being showcased

"
Installation by Ak Mahmud Ruzaini bin Pg Mohamad who used metal wires for sculpturing purposes. He was expressing the inner struggles within and it can be visible in a skinless form.

"
An illustration installation by Ikmal Atifah binti Hj Awang Mohamad who used folded coloured papers in creating a portrait of her. This workmanship requires a lot of energy and you have to be meticulous in executing this installation to perfection. Good job!!

"
Installation called “Heartstrings” by Ajeerah Firdausul Bolqiah. An interesting depiction of her life journey and her emotions are expressed by the chords and frets of a guitar illustrations. The different coloured hearts represent different situations that are either positive or negative.

"
A papercut illustration which is not quite common in the previous Spectacle but it’s making a presence in this year’s edition. Created by Nurshiela binti Idnin, she carved out three iconic personalities of Brunei through means of papercut. Awesome!!! Who knows one day you will get commissioned for your new known talent. Oh yea, she only started to love paper cutting during her Discovery Year in Bandung, Indonesia.

"
Last year I saw an illustration using lights and shadow. This year I saw a different perspective on how it can be used to express emotions. Nur Ezzati binti Morni with her project “Metanoia”, utilized wires and lights to create a shadow effect on people’s expression. With the power of the switch, these expressions can quickly change in an instant. Very creative indeed.

Also to share you some information that all the students had limited resources from UBD and hence, they are required to source their own materials in order to complete their end product. The students did fork out money to spend on the materials required to complete their artwork. Some of the displays required a lot of fabrication and that is never a cheap job. So you can see how dedicated the students are in investing their projects and made them possible for display at Spectacle 2018.

Haji Ahmad Najib Haji Ali Hassan, the Director of Spectacle 2018 Committee, was more than relieved after the successful launch of the event earlier this morning. The venue was only handed over in March and they were running against the time. He shared how they were meeting deadlines and completion of the decoration at the Art Gallery, Chancellor Hall. Finally, the whole team made it the event possible today which will continue until 14th May 2018.

Prior to this, the committee also organised fund raising events to help fund the Spectacle 2018 such as hosting the Spectacle Eminent Art Bazaar (February 2018) and Painting workshops (December 2017) to name a few. I kinda like how they have a good branding in promoting their event on social media. So keep it up 😀

Do follow them on @spectacle2018 on Instagram and also pay them a visit at the Gallery Art, Chancellor Hall, UBD. If you’re lucky enough, you might catch the artists there and learn more about their artworks and installations.

"
If you are thinking of reflection, as in reflecting on yourself, do try this mixed media installation called “Peculiar Reflection” by Dk Siti Syuhaidah binti Pg Baharuddin. When was the last time you look yourself in the mirror and appreciate yourself?

"
She must be one lucky lady. I wanna have what she has. Nur Lia Anira binti Johar created a 3D animation video called “Lucid Dreaming”. Apparently, she experiences lucid dreams on a yearly basis, meaning that you are conscious while dreaming. I only experienced it twice in my life and it was such an awesome feeling.

"

"
This is a mixed media installation by Haji Ahmad Najib who spoke of cerebral palsy among children and the message is to spread the awareness especially for parents and the public that through the right education, children with cerebral palsy can make strides towards a healthier and happier life.

"
Nurhanisah binti Hj Sabli shared about how that we lose the cultural identity of our country. She depicts using our traditional textile, kain tenunan, to create more awareness on our cultural identity. Hope is not lost indeed.

Mr. Ho Ley Hoon, Sales Manager of Jati Transport Sdn Bhd officially launching the new Mercedes-Benz iShowroom

Jati Transport Sdn Bhd has upped their game in the showroom department. Gone are the days of Mercedes-Benz brochures or pamphlets at their showroom. Last night the management team unveiled their first ever digital brochure app. With this app, customers are able to get a close up preview with their preference on the variety of Mercedes-Benz model available for order.

App is called The Mercedes-Benz iShowroom which acts as a digital brochure which allows prospective customers to choose and view which features and equipment best suits them. It’s like buying a computer online and choosing your own specs. Same thing applies here.

The best part of the app is that it allows the customer to choose their financing solution by dragging the button to see his or her budget needs. You can adjust the downpayment and the length of the loan with a touch of a button. Awesome feature!!

With the iShowroom, you can compare the different types of colors and fabrics and even rims of the available Mercedes-Benz models. It can also be viewed on 3 different angles to give the customer a wholistic feel online. There are also videos and interactive applications in making your car shopping experience more exciting than usual.

The sales executive team will be in charge of the iShowroom app whenever you pay a visit to the showroom. Or even better, they can drop by your area or pay you a visit and do a visual presentation to you with their iShowroom app.

Prospective customer can request for an email to be sent or print out after he or she has selected the options of the model for easy reference.

Mr. Ho Ley Hoon, Sales Manager of Jati Transport Sdn Bhd said, “Mercedes-Benz Brunei has been the first to introduce the concept of converting the traditional physical brochure into digital brochure via an app in Brunei. The idea is to offer our customers a unique and interesting experience to match their latest lifestyle when they visit our showroom. Furthermore, our sales executives are well equipped and will able to bring the iShowroom experience to your doorstep or wherever you are.”
