Following the success of its first film Yasmine, Origin Artistic is set to release its very first Bruneian Hari Raya flick in local cinemas nationwide on June 14, in time for the start of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Directed and produced by award-winning director Siti Kamaluddin, the new film, ‘Hari Minggu Yang Ke-Empat’ (HMYK4), is a heart-warming drama-comedy about family forgiveness and second chances. It is the first Hari Raya movie to be produced by a local filmmaker.

The film stars Kai Anuar aka Babu Si Nur, Liyana Yus, lan Zulkifli and Terry Wong.

News of the film release was announced yesterday at a press conference at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT). Among those in attendance were HMYK4 cast members and production crew, including director and producer Siti Kamaluddin.

HMYK4 is the culmination of experience gained from producing Yasmine, and sees many firsts.
According to Siti Kamaluddin, she said, “This new film is different from Yasmine, as in Yasmine a mix of standard Malay and Bruneian Malay was used, but HMYK4 is very Bruneian,” she said, adding that the idea of doing the movie came up while she was working on her new script just right after Chinese New Year.”

“I thought, why not make a movie on Hari Raya as there has never been one on it, and it will be a good topic of conversation during our Hari Raya visits.”

“I hope everyone will come and support the film and get it trending with the hashtag #liatsekampung come in groups to watch it as it is always fun to have a good laugh together,” said Siti.

“Unlike Yasmine, this film is also a very interesting model for me, as I worked with a Brunei-friendly budget and our cast is fully local. Hopefully we can draw a good response for the film and maybe progress to making a few movies a year.

“What I find as a director and writer – and I am also involved in the production side – is that I have to work extra hard. We multitask and we work with a much smaller team compared to Yasmine and this is a much scaled-down project.”

On the choice of the cast, Siti said the new actors were selected after viewing audition tapes. However, Kai Anuar’s (Babu Si Nur) talent was spotted by her during Brunei Film Blitz, which Origin Artistic participated in as part of the Brunei December Festival held in collaboration with Brunei Tourism.

“During Brunei Film Blitz, I got to watch a short film of one of the winners – Kai – in the open category. I got to see Kai as a different character from Babu Si Nur, and I was amazed to see how talented he was… I had him in mind (as part of the cast) for the script,” she said.

Talking about local films in general, Siti said making movies is not just simply shooting and screening them in the cinema, but the film profession requires a lot of career responsibilities and involves many interconnected disciplines and skills.

“It is a very technical job but is also very creative and corporations play a big role in supporting the local film. This (HMYK4) is not just a one off television show… 10 years from now you can still refer back and see the movie,” she said. “For me HMYK4 is very iconic as it our very first Hari Raya movie and it will probably be popular in other countries as well. We look forward to the screening.”

Main cast member Kai Anuar beamed that it has been a pleasure to be part of the film and that it has been one of the best experiences he’s ever had in his life.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the filming process… from pre-production with rehearsals and script reading, right up to sessions with the director and the other cast. All this was done to build chemistry before the actual shooting, and to get a feel of the emotional states we should be and to familiarise ourselves all the filming dos and don’ts,” he said.

As for the star of Yasmine, Liyana Yus, the new film was a much less nerve-wracking experience and more of a chance to display the acting skills she has honed in the previous production.

“I just applied what I’ve learnt from Yasmine, and at the same time shared my experience with the new actors. For me perhaps the next challenge will be to progress from playing a teenager role as in Yasmine to a character aged in the 30s,” said the actress.

Siti expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support for the film from various corporations such as Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd, Brunei Press, Radio Television Brunei, Jollibee Brunei, Archipelago Development Corporation, Tiong Jaya, Sri Sentosa (Hertz), Cuckoo Brunei, Nazmi Textile Mall, Aiking Trading Co, Harwood, Golden Corporation, Colourland and Smart Paint, Rainfresh, and Brunei Halal.
She also accorded appreciation to the MPRT, Department of Civil Aviation, Royal Brunei Police Force, Fire and Rescue Department, the Ministry of Health, as well as her Brunei fans for their support of the film.

“I love making films for Brunei and wish to thank the Brunei audience for their continuing support. I hope to produce more films from Brunei to continue sharing our stories to the global audience,” she said. Source: Lyna Mohd of Borneo Bulletin.

Brunei bows out

A deflated feeling for the players after the final whistle as Brunei bowed out of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy, losing to Myanmar 1-0

"
Myanmar No.17 sealed the deal with a 35th minute strike. Image by Infofoto.

Timor Leste grabbed the final spot of the semi-final as Brunei failed to keep at least a draw, falling down to the defending champions Myanmar 1-0. The script was simple – to at least draw against Myanmar. Instead the visitor spoiled the party of a strong 25,000 crowd at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium last night.

Myanmar’s No.17 Zin Min Tun scored the only goal and eventually the match winner. It came from an effort from Myanmar’s No.9 Aung Kaung Mann whose shot was parried by Brunei’s keeper, Ishyra
Amin Jabidi, only for Zin Min Tun to slot it in with the keeper rooted from his spot in the 35th minute.

Myanmar rested one of their main strikers but that didn’t stop the visitors from creating chances after chances. They held the ball well and stretched Brunei’s defence and midfield as they easily found space by the wing area. Myanmar were simply superior in every department and they had more pace than our players.

Myanmar’s head coach Kyi Liwn was happy with the result and he felt the players did a tremendous job even with numerous chances being wasted. Scoring more goals wasn’t his objective but grinding out the points was his mission. He told his players to focus on the field and treat the cheers and voices from the stadium as if they were their fans.

As for Brunei Darussalam, it’s back to the drawing board as they are dumped out of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy and now looking ahead of other competitions. Brunei coach, Mario Riveira Campesino shared that Brunei showed that they have the talents and they will need to have more exposure, playing internationally to gain experience. He was in high praise for Myanmar for being able to hold possession and controlling the pace of the game.

To me, Brunei did show improvements from their first match against Timor Leste. If you ask me, it was the Timor Leste match that they should have won at least. However, the ball is round and anything can happen in football.

On a brighter side, I was pleased with the defensive display by Ak Yura Yunos who had numerous crucial interceptions throughout the 90 minutes. He was able to read the game and thwarted many attempts by the visitors. He was one of the busiest players on the field last night. Another person I should highlight is our own keeper, Asmin. He made the scoreline more respectable as Myanmar could have score more and closed the game away. Both players, Ak Yura and Asmin, deserved a big round of applause.

Brunei’s best chance came once again from captain Faiq Jefri Bolkiah. Myanmar failed to clear the ball in defence and Faiq only had the keeper to beat but guided his shot straight to Phone Thistar Min in the 50th minute. That could have been the equalizer for Brunei to qualify for the semi-finals. But it was not meant to be.

Brunei rarely threatened in the second half, only relying on half chances which was a tall order. Kudos to Myanmar for putting up a courageous and disciplined performance. They are now favourites along with Singapore to lift the HBT. Brunei bowed out with only three points from six games while Timor Leste squeezed in with four points. Myanmar topped the group with 7 points.

In the other match, Cambodia beat favourites Singapore 1-0 but both still qualify for the semi-finals. Lao DPR is eliminated from the tournament.

Now with Brunei Darussalam out of the equation, the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium won’t be the same when the semi-final match will take place this Wednesday. Economically, it won’t be good for business especially food and merchandise vendors. A lot of revenue were made from these said vendors whenever Brunei play at the national stadium.

I’m definitely gonna miss watching Brunei playing in front of an amazing crowd. It looks like another two year wait.

Brunei registers first win, HBT

"
Well done, Brunei Darussalam for last night’s important victory

"
A well deserved victory for the host nation

After a nervy start to the tournament, Brunei Darussalam bounced back against a tougher opponent, this time against a powerhouse Thailand with a 2-1 victory at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium last night. I’m pleased to see Ak Yura Indera Putera Pg Yunos getting on the scoresheet and scoring the winner in injury time. He was a colossal in defence when Brunei lost to Timor Leste 1-0 in the opening match and he kept the backline composed throughout the game.

Even with a scoreline deadlock by half time, the host nation kept pressuring the visitors and looked more of a different force – alive and hungry.

Naziruddin Hj Ismail scored the opening goal with an assist from captain Faiq Jefri Bolkiah after 60 minutes which brought the strong 25,000 crowd into a frenzy celebration. Thailand managed to equalized minutes later through their captain Paso Sittichok. However, Brunei maintained their momentum from the first half and Ak Yura snatched a winner through a corner kick late in injury time.

The question beckoned on where was this solid, impressive performance that was missing in the first game? The head coach was probably right when he previously mentioned that Brunei was over excited before the tournament kicked off.

Azim Suhaimi, Brunei’s midfielder, had a good piece of advice to the fans especially those who were quick to judge the players [in a negative manner] on social media. I recently came across the comments on @brusportnews and they were definitely uncalled for. It’s important for us to learn to give constructive feedback with a nicer tone rather than totally bashing the players which can in turn demoralized the players.

Come Monday, Brunei has another hurdle to overcome with the likes of the defending champion Myanmar in the final match of the group A in the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy. This will definitely be a crowd puller even on a Monday evening and I won’t be surprised if the attendance will break the 25,000 strong crowd from last night.

Kudos once again to the Brunei team. Let’s continue the morale support and believe in our team that they can be the best team and the team to beat after last night’s performance. Images courtesy of @infodept.bn

Khairul Anuar flies to Russia

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in Social News

ButraHeidelberg Cement (BHC) Sdn Bhd ‘Kick-Off with Brunei Cement’ which lasted two months and the main event was held at Indoor Stadium last Sunday

Out of all the 100 participants, Mohd Khairul Anuar emerged the champion of the ButraHeidelberg Cement (BHC) Sdn Bhd ‘Kick-Off with Brunei Cement’ campaign last Sunday at the Indoor Stadium.

He won the competition’s grand prize of a trip for two to Russia including hotel accommodation and tickets to watch the World Cup match between Germany and Mexico on June 17, 2018 at the Moscow Luzhniki Stadium.

Second place went to Md Zain, who won a Microsoft Surface Pro, while Hajah Siti Nurnajiah took third place, winning a Garmin Watch Vivo Active 3.

It was a tie between Mohd Khairul Anuar and Md Zain in the “score and win” section. The score were tied with 1-1 and Md Zain had the opportunity to seal the finals by scoring one more point from three kicks. However, the scoreline remained at 1-1. The tie-breaker was then decided as Mohd Khairul successfully made 4 out of 5 attempts scoring 4 points whereas Md Zain only score 1 point. The other third finalist Hajah Siti Nurnajiah binti Haji Yahya failed to register a point in the “score and win” section.

The semi-finals was a much interesting affair as 7 contestants were vying for the top 3 spots in the finals and all they had to do is “Name the Flag” of the 20 listed countries participating in the Russia 2018. Hajah Siti Nurnajiah emerged the winner in the category, almost scoring a perfect score with 19 out of 20 marks. Both Mohd Khairul Anuar and Md Zain finished with 17 points.

The Kick Off With Brunei Cement competition was held in conjunction with the 2018 FIFA World Cup and it began early March 2018 to get the ball rolling.

For the past few weeks, BHC organised a series of activities as part of the Kick-Off with Brunei Cement competition, with pre-event activities being held in early March 2018, the ‘Stick and Win’ activity where participants had to attach the official ‘Kick-Off with Brunei Cement 2018’ sticker on a registered motor vehicle and be spotted in several locations as announced by the company on its Instagram account @bruneicement

The second pre-event activity was the ‘Snap and Win’, where several riddles each indicating a specific location were mentioned on @BruneiCement, where to win, participants had to guess and snap a photo of the location they think corresponds to each riddle.

The third pre-event activity was the ‘Follow and Win’ activity held during BandarKu Ceria and TutongKu Ceria. Participants were required to follow @BruneiCement, and those who managed to obtain a special “stressball” with the special logo were given a ticket to participate in the main event last Sunday.

All winners (100 of them) from the pre-event activities competed in a series of games, including the ‘Scavenger Hunt’, ‘Tallest Tower’, ‘Name the Flag’ and ‘Score and Win’.

Other activities for the contestants and their family and friends at the main event included a kids’ corner and a face painting session.
Also featuring at the event were a 100 cotton candy sticks giveaway, a popcorn and coconut ice cream stall, and sale of Chicken Joy meals from Jollibee. There was also an appearance by Jollibee mascot.

Jollibee (Brunei) is moving at a fast pace as it opened its 16th store at Jalan Muara Highway last weekend. Furthermore, it’s their second drive thru after having one at Sengkurong. The recent outlet is the 16th for Jollibee (Brunei).

So it’s safe to say that Jollibee hits the Bruneians’ taste and it has been an ongoing success since its inception in 1987. Recently, Jollibee has opened its first outlet in Europe (Milan) and the response has been overwhelming. It will also soon open its door in the USA. So you can say that Jollibee is a worldwide favourite.

Present during the launch was Mr. Rodel Alcantara, AVP & Market Head for Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia & Europe, Jollibee Foods Corporation and he was very pleased with the efforts of Jollibee (Brunei) in expanding their brand and also to those involved in the project of the Jollibee drive-thru. Jollibee is also a strong believer in social media in helping creating awareness for the presence of Jollibee in Brunei.

The first 100 customers with a minimum purchase of BND 10 will receive a Jollibee Huggable pillow and it was a huge success.

Congratulations once again to Jollibee (Brunei) on your 16th outlet. Looking forward to more outlets in Brunei, being the leading fast food franchise, in Brunei Darussalam. For social media updates, you can follow @jollibeebrunei
