Shell Eco-Marathon 2014

A sending off ceremony was held today at the Brunei International Airport for the participants of the Shell Eco-Marathon 2014. A total of 35 Bruneians from five teams will be challenging more than 100 teams from 16 different countries to break the national record of driving 142km on a single liter of fuel.

Present at the send-off ceremony was the, Deputy Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Haji Salleh Bostaman bin Haji Zainal Abidin as well as other officials from the Ministry of Education and Brunei Shell Petroleum.

Prior to leaving for The Philippines, the five teams from University Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Sekolah Vokasional Seria Bolkiah (SVSB), and Pusat Latihan Mekanik (PLM) had the chance to do a preliminary technical inspection before the vehicles were shipped to Manila.

Among some of the aspects of the technical inspection involved a visibility test, brake test, safety belt check, and escape test, according to the stringent health, safety and environment standards set by Shell.

This is the third year that Bruneian teams will be participating in SEM Asia, as Brunei first participated in the Shell Eco Marathon in 2011, by pitting eco-cars built by students from PLM and SVSB against 103 teams representing 12 countries from Japan, India, China, and the ASEAN countries on the Sepang International Circuit.

Brunei’s participation in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 competition is the result of a successful collaboration between BSP and the Ministry of Education through UBD and Department of Technical Education (DTE).

In this year’s edition, the five teams from Brunei will be competing against more than 100 other teams from 16 different countries, exposing them to the technologies and expertise used by students from other participating countries, as well as a chance to network.

The SEM competition is part of Shell’s Mobility Campaign, and challenges students in finding innovative ways to develop more energy-efficient fuels and lubricants to help reduce Co2 emissions. SEM provides a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of design and build the cars of tomorrow.

To power their vehicles, teams can choose from a selection of conventional and alternative fuels. They can enter the ‘Prototype’ category, where cars are designed for pure fuel efficiency, or the ‘UrbanConcept’ category, where vehicles also have to meet certain road-worthy criteria.

There are rules regarding the specification of the engines and the chassis in both categories but, outside of those and as long as teams adhere to the safety regulations, the design of their cars is limited only by their imagination.

This year’s event will be held from 6 – 9 February 2014 at Luneta Park in Manila, Philippines and will include teams from all over the Asian region. Press release from Brunei Shell.

Restocking in Temburong

“Temporary issues with delivery” was attributed to the unavailability of diesel and petrol in the Temburong District two days ago, causing difficulties for many motorists especially those utilising the route to cross the border to Malaysia and vice-versa.

According to Temburong resident Hj Apong Momin, many motorists in the district were left fuming when they were met with signs indicating the unavailability of diesel and petrol for the past two days. He said it started at one of the only two petrol stations in the district, but supplies also ran out at the other petrol station when people started buying in panic.

The long queue last Tuesday at Temburong

Brunei Shell Marketing (BSM)’s Head of Retail, Md Adini Hj M Daini, however, reassured residents of Temburong that there is no need for panic buying as fuel supplies are adequate and there is no shortage of fuel in the country.

“At 6.30pm last evening (Tuesday), we have made delivery to the petrol stations and they are willing to open until late last night to cater for the demand,” he said in a telephone call to the Bulletin.

The temporary disruption to supplies, he said, was due to issues with delivery but he assured that petrol supplies for today have been secured and will have additional delivery of fuel today.

“We regret the inconvenience caused, especially to motorists in Temburong and have taken action to address the situation accordingly and are working closely with the petrol stations to monitor their stocks to ensure continuous delivery of fuel,” he added. CNY recap

I’m still recovering from the CNY festive celebration or more like taking time off. Yea true, celebrations are kinda muted and plus it’s a long weekend and many were traveling abroad for holidays. I have been returning home late (sorry Mom) and sleeping late as well and now my body clock has slightly been affected and also a bit of my work.

I shall be traveling again soon to Singapore to accompany my mom and also juggling with my workload. One thing though that I have yet to commit is my yoga exercise and also two of my objectives which I have set earlier in the year but yet to even kick it off. That’s the thing, the hardest is always the beginning, right? But once you get the ball rolling, it will roll.

For now, I’m gonna flood with this post with pictures taken from my CNY visit. Enjoy and be right back!!

2012/2013 Pelangi Awards

It was an event that I missed yet again - the 2012-2013 Pelangi Awards. It took place last weekend at the Jerudong Amphitheater and thousands came to show their support to the local talent. Fakhrul Razi and Ezah Hashim were the big winners in their respective categories. Fakhrul Razi won Chosen Male Vocal and the Special Award. Ezah Hashim won Chosen Female Vocal and Chosen New Solo Artist.

Fakhrul was given the Special Award for his contribution in the music scene where he started in the age of 14 and the various awards he was won ever since and the biggest of the lot was the Gold medals he achieved at the World Championship of Performing Arts in 2013. He's also a popular TV presenter and well known master of ceremonies. He is also a DJ on Kristal FM but his recent post stated that it was his last show for Kristal FM. I'm not quite sure what he meant.

The other awards went to The Seeds as the Chosen Duo/Group Vocal while “Have a Safe Fall” (Adilah, Richmond, Bryant and Mark Jay) won the Chosen New Duo/Group Vocal. Last but not least, Maria won Chosen Song, Jika Tiada Jalan Lain.

There were some live performances from the local artistes such as Aziz Harun, Rapul Rezal, Juju Junaidi and Udt Band. The guest of honour Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman present the Chosen Song to Maria.

Did you know that this is the fifth time that Pelangi FM has held this award ceremony? This is a great platform to inspire more local talents and not just in the vocal department but also as a music composer or a lyricist or a musician or even a producer.

A great effort by Pelangi FM in creating this event and it was another success too. Congratulations to the winners and also to those who made it to the finals. In the end of the day, all of you are winners because of the passion and dedication you have shown and inspire more potential artistes to come out of their shells :)

Robocop (2014)

Fast forward 30 odd plus years later, there was a reboot for the Robocop franchise. Many won’t have recalled the classic Robocop movie which was directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers) and I kinda enjoyed his version. So what’s my take for the reboot? First of all, I was kinda impressed with a lot of things. It’s never easy to make a reboot or a remake of a classic movie. Sometimes it’s best not to reboot a household name because of the risk and the expectations that come along with it.

José Padilha the director may have just hit the mark in continuing a rebooted franchise. Though there were moments of expositions, Robocop delivered in both the plot and the action scenes. I didn’t feel restless for one and I was drawn into the fact of how human emotions conflict with programming and that again it’s another area which can open up discussion to another level. Some may have complained about the patches of dialogue in the film but I felt it was necessary to create that emotional attachment to the characters involved. Though I would have to admit that the dialogue scenes could have been edited and cut out the unnecessary bits.

The other down side I felt is the PG-13 rating which makes it less surreal and gruesome so kids can still enjoy the much talked about Robocop. I wasn’t too concerned about it but it would have given the action scenes more substance and feel if it had a stricter rating for the audience. Nonetheless, this is surprisingly entertaining and it was a good way to end a mediocre January in terms of movie releases.

Robocop is a recommended movie and if you enjoy character development and stylish action scenes, you will get that rewarding feel in Robocop. Oh yea, the casting were great too. This movie warrants a sequel. I shall wait for that. It’s pretty interesting how people have rated Robocop with a high average of 8 in the ratings chart. You can view them here on my instagram. Verdict: 8/10 @delgoh 7

Second quiz: This is in relation to The Popcorn Panel quiz where you will stand a chance to win a PS4 console and this is the second quiz for The Popcorn Panel. Name three other movies that were discussed in the Episode 22 review of Robocop? All you have to do is listen to our Episode 22 on Soundcloud.com/thepopcornpanel and do post your answers on my instagram image of Robocop. I will be running quizzes on different episodes of The Popcorn Panel and the competition will run until April 2014. So good luck, peeps!!

KL City City and Kenaga Wholesale

KL Rewind - January 2014. Although many of us may be familiar with KL and the shopping to be done there, how many of us have actually really seen the city? And when I mean see the city, it takes on a whole new meaning when you see it in a different way while visiting the KL City Gallery, which is located near Dataran Merdeka.

We were fortunate enough to visit the gallery on the day that the launch of Visit Malaysia Year took place, so the area was bustling with activity, with tents pitched for the upcoming spectacle that would take place that very evening.

The KL City Gallery is actually pretty awesome because it has this whole room dedicated to the history of KL, but presents it in such a unique manner, which makes you feel like you're walking through a history book, but more fun. Written by Aliya Zin.
