We need more of this. It's good to see the drama scene slowly coming back and I, for one, love to act and this is no easy feat too. Last week, I had the opportunity to catch a short play called "The Boor and the Langsat" directed by Abdul Zainidi who is known for his series "Brunei in Paris" and "Beverly Hills Brunei" and his short film "Bread Dream" was selected in the Cannes short film in 2012.
"The Langsat" tells a surreal story of a young man named Langsat in a mental hospital who dreams of putting a show in his 'mind'. Also, in his head, he is plagued with monsters and trolls who act in "The Boor" later on.
The second play was a Russian comedy about how a widow who grieves after the death of her husband. At the same time, she has to deal with a chauvinist creditor by the name of Smirnov who wants to collect a debt of money from her late husband. The widow, who is accompanied only by her man servant named Luka, is also being held in the house. [Source: Ikhwan Salleh of The Brunei Times]
From what I heard, the preparation was a month or so and the cast pulled off a commendable show. I was particularly impressed with the final act of the play - Mrs Popov played by Adilah Affendy and Smirnov played by the director himself Abdul Zainidi. The body language and the facial expressions and even the chemistry could be felt between the two. I kinda like how they incorporated some Malay in the play and it was humourous too.
The one hour play was organised by Creative Academy of Narrative and Dramatic Arts and Sciences (CANDAS). I hope to see more of this and good job to the cast involved and also to the director for making it possible.
The cast performed some impromptu acts
