After a successful run of 4 seasons in 2012, the KFC Fitness Zone 3 On 3 Streetball Challenge is back, this time, bigger and better. Yesterday at Fitness Zone Kiulap’s basketball court, KFC and Fitness Zone renewed their partnership and also brought in Good Game Event Management & Advertising and Trinity Advertising & Event Management, 2 event companies to help drive their vision. “This year we have a new team with more experience and dedication to help us bring the game to the next level,” says Jonathan Bong, Senior Marketing Manager, KFC.
2013 will continue to see the tournament playing in 4 seasons, namely in March, June, September and December at The Airport Mall but each tournament itself will differ from the others. The first tournament in March will take place end of March at the Airport Mall itself entirely. There will also be a sub activity which is the cybergame tournament running alongside with the main basketball tournament.
The renewal of the partnership agreement also sees KFC and Fitness Zone initiating a “Hopes In The Hoop” project. “With this project, our aim is to work with various organizations to give hope to basketball so that basketball in turn can inspire hopes to others” says Wu Chun, Managing Director Of Fitness Zone. “Basketball has always played second fiddle in a football loving nation but it has a lot of potential to be developed into a fun activity that brings family together, especially 3 on 3 which is easier to pick up” added Jonathan. Part of this initiative will see KFC and Fitness Zone, together with their event partners doing school visits and road shows to promote the game. “I started basketball when I was young in school, with Michael Jordan as my role model. Partly where I am today comes from many important lessons which I have learnt from basketball, one being to never give up. We hope that by sharing some of these testimonies, others would see basketball in a different way and we hope that they will fall in love with it just as we did” says Wu Chun.
As part of the Hopes in the Hoops Initiative, part of the proceeds generated via sponsor’s contributions, player’s registrations and other revenue, from the 3 On 3 Streetball tournament will go to various charitable causes in Brunei at the end of the year.
Entry forms for the March tournament will be available at all Fitness Zone outlets and available at KFC Gadong Central, KFC Airport Mall and KFC Seria outlets starting 8th February 2013. For more information, interested parties can log on to KFC Fitness Zone 3 On 3 Streetball Challenge on facebook. For the March tournament, there will also be booth selling opportunities of 10 days (22nd – 31st March), interested parties can call Jacky/Winnie at 7182907/8833831 for more details.

Check out the #HSBB at Times Square
People been asking me what does HSBB stands for?? It stands for High Speed Broadband and finally we Bruneians can experience a different level of internet speed. It reminds me of the transition from dial-up modem to our existing broadband (eSpeed). The responses have been mixed for the past few years and this is perhaps boils down to congestion due to high number of subscribers. I remembered when eSpeed was introduced, the rates were reasonably high then before they introduced competitive low rates in the past two to three years which increased the number of subscribers (just refer to the diagram below).
Now streamlining seems seamless and you can see the demo at the TelBru High Speed broadband roadshow at Times Square. Tomorrow (Sunday) will be the last day of the roadshow. For your information, around 1,000 homes are already connected with HSBB and the ongoing project is called fibre-to-the-home (FTTH). Hence the first 1,000 houses are part of the 1st phase of FTTH project and yesterday was the celebration of that milestone and also the official launch of HSBB which took place at Times Square Shopping Mall.
Pehin Abdullah the Minister of Communicaitons was the guest of honour and he's a high user of internet and he was very eager to see the efficiency of internet speed in Brunei alone. This was also part of the discussions during the BIT council on the FTTH project and it's good to see that the timeline is on track.
I didn't have a chance to interview David Kay, the CEO of TelBru. From the press release, he revealed that the first phase of the project covered areas are Madang, Gadong and Bandar. He said that it's not easy to implement FTTH but they will slowly go in phases to install the cabling works and mind you it costs a huge investment.
David hopes that by the end of the year that most homes in the densely populated area will be connected to high speed broadband. So peeps, be patient should your area do have not FTTH installed yet. I'm quite fortunate that I'm staying around Gadong and the guys are still fixing the cables at my home and it does take some time as well.
