The LEGO Movie

The LEGO Movie. Everything is awesome!!

The LEGO Movie. Everything is awesome!! Well, for those who have seen this latest animated film would understand what I’m referring to. It’s an annoying catchy soundtrack from the big hit movie. I happen to catch this movie last Thursday and it’s kinda delayed that I release this review a week after, right? Anyway, the LEGO movie reminds me exactly like The Incredibles where the overall feel for the movie would be more rewarding for adults though kids will still have fun ride along the way.

The first half was so-so for me but the laughs were aplenty from the beginning. The second picked up pace and the final third was one of the best moments I’ve experienced in cinema which includes Del Goh laughing (out of control) for a good three minutes near the end. It’s really hard not to spoil the movie and saying the great bits of the movie. But let’s just say that I love the Batman’s character in this movie because of his over-the-top macho presence and the dark knight minifig also has a girlfriend *lol*

Oh yeah, before I end, this movie also kinda reminds me of The Matrix. Just watch it and you will get what I mean. A movie that I truly enjoy and I won’t mind a second viewing. It’s a good way to kick off February after a very disappointing January for movie lovers. Verdict: 8/10 @delgoh 8/10 @abbylmf 4/10

Another CNY celebration

It was the first time I stepped into Great Eastern Life at Kiulap branch and yesterday the one of the leading insurance policyholders hosted CNY Open House to usher the Year of the Horse. The said company celebrated with their staff, distribution representatives, policyholders, business partners and associates.

The Great Eastern Life team, led by Caroline Sim, Head Brunei Branch, hosted guests and their customers. Apart from the refreshments, they were treated with mandarins to wish them a prosperous and healthy New Year, in line with its Live Great Programme.

According to Caroline Sim, this is the first open house that Great Eastern Life organised to show their appreciation to their customers and also thanking them for their continuous support. It promotes the cultural integration among other races as well as strengthen ties from all professional backgrounds, be it friends or business partners or clients because they are a Life company.

The open house lasted for 5 hours and it kicked off with some firecrackers followed by the cake cutting and the traditional yee sang.

Fans of the KFC Zinger and Original Recipe Chicken has something new to look forward to at KFC, this time in the form of breakfast.

Firstly, KFC Brunei is introducing a new breakfast combo, the KFC a.m. Zinger Riser combo. Consisting of a boneless zinger fillet, marinated with KFC's signature marinade, topped with a fresh sunny side up and mayonnaise, and sandwiched between two sesame seed buns. Also comes with a cup of coffee, tea or teh tarik, priced at only $4.30.

Secondly, KFC is featuring its a.m. Chicken Porridge which is cooked with shredded Original Recipe Chicken for that Original Recipe taste. In conjunction with the upcoming celebration of Brunei Darussalam's 30th National Day later this month, the a.m. Chicken Porridge is offered at only B$3.00 which also comes with a drink of choice of tea, coffee, or teh tarik for a limited time only. Usual price is $3.70.

KFC a.m. Zinger Riser combo

KFC a.m. Chicken Porridge

“Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper,” a quote by well known American author and nutritionist Adelle Davis. KFC had this quote in mind when they embarked on a journey to start serving breakfast to customers in the Sultanate back in 2009. The number of KFC a.m. breakfast store has since grown from 3 to 11 in a span of 5 years.

“With 70% of our outlets now serving KFC a.m. breakfast, it is now easier to do breakfast promotions compared to the past. Our concern was that a customer may come across a breakfast promotion and end up in an outlet that is not serving breakfast,” says Jonathan Bong, Senior Marketing Manager, KFC (B) Sdn Bhd. Beside the newly launchedKFC a.m. Zinger Riser combo and the featured a.m. Original Recipe Chicken Porridge, customers can also try out KFC’s signature product, the a.m. Twister combo. Also, fans of Mr Brown coffee can also try out the Mr Brown Milk Tea which is now solely available only at all KFC outlets in Brunei.

In modern times of hectic lives, it’s getting harder for families to spend quality time together. “we are seeing a rising trend of customers coming in to our restaurant to dine alone and/or quickly so that they can move on to continue their work or day’s activities and by endorsing the importance of breakfast through our promotions, we hope that more customers can use KFC as a good excuse to bring their families together to spend more time together especially in the weekend, in the comfort of our store’s ambience,” said Del Goh, Vice President, KFC (B) Sdn Bhd.

KFC a.m. breakfast is currently available from 8am to 11am daily at the following KFC outlets: Mentiri, Berakas, Airport Mall, Yayasan, Kiulap, Gadong Central, Sengkurong Drive-Thru, Sengkurong, UBD, Seria and Kuala Belait.

CNY at Ishajaya

Lion Dance performance at Ishajaya Technology two Mondays ago (not yesterday). Image take from Ishajaya Technology’s Facebook

I attended the Chinese New Year open house yesterday at Ishajaya Technology (Thanks FJ for the invite) and I managed to catch up with a few of my mutual and familiar faces at the open house. For those who doesn’t know, Ishajaya Technology is a local IT company that partnered with iSoft, an international supplier healthcare software applications, and created the Bru-HIMS project, initiated by the Ministry of Health. Bru-HIMS stands for Brunei Healthcare Information and Management System and the idea is to provide speedier services through means of centralised database.

As easy as it sounds, it was not easy to implement in the first place. The system has worked successfully in more developed countries such as China and they have been using this technology for many years. Brunei-HIMS is still considered pretty new to Brunei despite it being launched back in 2012. According to the press release back in October 2013, more than 50% have registered themselves with Bru-HIMS. I actually haven’t registered myself just yet.

The system in place still needs to be adopted especially by the doctors and thus training and re-training are important for the doctors in RIPAS to get accustom o the new Bru-HIMS system which in turn expedite the process especially the waiting time.

Patience is required and I’m grateful that we have Bru-HIMS in place despite the inconvenience that patients have encountered on some occasion. The intention of Bru-HIMS is simple - enhance the quality of health and medical services. This is also the current global trend for health facilities and they too are facing similar issues. The Ministry of Health are doing their best to make the transitional period smoother.

I don’t know why I’m saying all these but I feel it’s a good way to educate the public on what’s happening. Thank you, Ishajaya, for the hospitality (and great food too) yesterday and good luck with the project.

Expression showcase

The Kaleidoscope Studio will be presenting “Expression”, this February. It is a collaboration art exhibition by Faiz Morshidi, Nur Khalisah Ahmad, Sam Siren, Temperatie and Winnie Cheng. Do expect some paintings, paper cuttings pieces, drawings and some art installation. The artists involved aimed at expressing their personalities through means of art, their fantasies and imaginations and even through means of art performances. So you will be aware that art itself will give you not just the visual but also the sensory experience.

Faiz Morshidi explores emotion through figurative imagery and portraiture. Surreal in nature, Faiz draws upon personal stories and of people in his life to give life to indefinable feelings that are felt by people. Longing, frustration, affection are manifested on canvas represented by figure and plant like imagery, metaphors for human emotion. In contrast to his paintings, one installation using light and shadow will be featured, revealing Faiz’s sculptural abilities.

Next is Nur Khalisah Ahmad (Lisa) of Kaleidoscope Studio who uses more of abstract art. Creating images through stream of consciousness drawing and using organic forms from flora and fauna as inspiration, dense line work combines to form intricate images that are meant to be springboards for the imagination. Psychological in nature, the networks of lines and shapes reflect a viewer’s own psyche as it acts a trigger to inspire imagery from their own minds.

Sam Siren of Kaleidoscope Studio is no stranger in the art scene. Her visual illustrations are quite interesting. Her work encompasses both figurative works and abstract and reflects her many personalities. There is one section where Sam displays her version illustrations of characters from Alice in Wonderland. Her abstract works also deals with layers and lines which express her experiences of ‘synesthesia’, (when a person sees colours when hearing sounds).

Check out their Expression showcase

Another person that I want to give a shout out to is my close friend Winnie Cheng. Her artistry mind is amazing and I’ve seen most of her works that she posted on social media. I even bought an art piece that I quite appreciate a year ago. I’m glad that she’s part of the Expression showcase. What’s amazing about her talent is her fantastical imagination. Drawing creatures is one of her forte but she depicts it in a very unique way with some interesting motives behind them. Her art is open to different interpretations by other people as viewers have to use their own imaginations to make sense of the pictures. She’s quite involved in paper cutting as well and the finishings are quite delicate and eye catchy. It’s a pity that this will be her last exhibition before she pursues her passion back in her home town, Penang in March.

Finally, another artiste that is involved in Expression uses performance to express herself. Temperatie shows a different way in conveying messages to eyes of the viewers. Her artistic performance deals with sticky situations and we too can relate to our daily lives. She gave a sneak preview of how we can easily picture ourselves in our challenges and obstacles that we bound to go through. In this case, Temperatie uses ribbons and strings as webs on another being so we can visualised how we can be easily caught in challenges. Another interesting piece I must say.

For your information, Expression is a touring exhibition that will take place in 3 different venues, with some artist talks taking place in conjunction with the exhibition. The different venues show how art can be transformed by space and vice versa. It will be held on February 5 – 15 at Saffron Café (1st floor), February 16 – 22 at Alliance Francaise and February 23 – March 1 at The Souq.

Big thumbs up to Lisa and her team in making this possible. It’s good to see more art exhibition being showcased in Brunei Darussalam.

DPMM FC new jerseys

DPMM FC have unveiled their new jerseys home and away recently and now it’s now available at Imperiall Sports, Gills Sports and other major sports outlet in Brunei. I’m not too sure how much they are selling it for. The jerseys are different from last season and the home jersey does have some resemblance of old Blackburn Rovers top. Tomorrow DPMM FC will have a small mini-fair at the Jerudong Mini-Stadium and everyone is welcome. There will be some activities going on and you can get up close and personal with the DPMM FC players too.

Shell Eco-Marathon updates

The Shell Eco-Marathon Asia, the biggest and most popular fuel efficiency contest in Asia, flags off at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila today with 113 competitors from 15 countries attempting to outdrive one another in squeezing out the most number of kilometers from using just one liter of fuel or one Kilowatt-hour of energy.

The SEM Asia pits students from across the region in developing ultra energy-efficient vehicles that could go the farthest using the least amount of fuel/energy.

The SEM Asia ceremonial flag-off was held today, with President Benigno Aquino III as special guest. Also present at the flag off from Brunei was the Brunei Darussalam Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Datin Paduka Malai Hjh Halimah binti Malai Hj Yussof and the Deputy Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd Hj Salleh Bostaman bin Hj Zainal Abidin.

The first team from Brunei to pass the technical inspection, Alpha 4 from Pusat Latihan Mekanik, was chosen to be among the few teams to be featured at the flag-off. Student competitors from the Asian region, as well as the Middle East, have flown to Manila for the fifth running of the Shell Eco Marathon Asia, and will all try to beat the record set by a college team from Thailand.

Competing in the Philippines are five teams from Brunei. They will be racing alongside students from universities, colleges and technical institutes across 15 countries. The five teams consist of students from Sekolah Vokasional Bolkiah (two teams), Pusat Latihan Mekanik (two teams) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (one team). Two Bruneian teams, each from Pusat Latihan Mekanik and Universiti Brunei Darussalam will be participating in the Prototype category of the competition while the other three teams, two from Sekolah Vokasional Bolkiah and one from Pusat Latihan Mekanik will be competing in the UrbanConcept vehicle categories of the competition.

In 2012, in Sepang, Malaysia, Thai students from Dhurakij Pubdit University were able to run their Ethanol 100 prototype vehicle for 2,903 kilometers with just a liter of fuel.

Unlike the previous eco-marathons that have been staged inside the Sepang International Circuit, this year the competition will run in a 1.2-kilometer course around the Rizal Park at the center of Manila, giving the students a real-world driving experience, highlighting how their fuel-efficient creations can work in a real urban setting.

Brunei Darussalam Ambassador to the Philippines Her Excellency Datin Paduka Malai Hjh Halimah binti Malai Hj Yussof and the Deputy Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd Hj Salleh Bostaman bin Hj Zainal Abidin with team Alpha 4 from Pusast Latihan Mekanik who became the first team from Brunei to pass the technical inspection

Team Alpha 4

The teams have been designing and building their energy-efficient vehicles for more than a year. Success is not measured by speed – it is measured by who can drive the longest on the least amount of fuel and become the most fuel-efficient team by thinking creatively about energy efficiency and putting new ideas into practice.

Aside from the competition, the SEMA will also convene partners and other stakeholders around the future of energy, technology and mobility. Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2014 has broadened and included two new events – The Shell Energy Lab and the Powering Progress Together Forum also held at the historic Manila Hotel. Both events aim to spark reflection on the world’s food, water and energy resource challenges.

The Shell Eco-Marathon began in 1939 at a Shell research laboratory in the United States as a friendly wager between scientists to see who could get the most miles per gallon from their vehicle. The winner of that contest barely achieved 50 miles per gallon and from these humble origins, a more organized competition evolved. In 1985 in France, Shell Eco-marathon as we know it today was born. In April 2007 the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas event was launched in the United States. In 2010, the inaugural Shell Eco-Marathon Asia was held in Malaysia, where the country hosted the event until 2013.

For more information on all Shell Eco-marathon events across the globe, including official rules, instructions for registration and details on prizes, please visit the Shell Eco-marathon website at Press release and images courtesy of Brunei Shell Petroleum.
