#SGSMD a success
Morning peeps!!! I recently added a Social Media event in Singapore and it was also my first time experience to attend a socmed event outside Brunei. So it was a very interesting experience.. I heard of the event through @dlbchin’s tweet (seeeee… the power of Twitter) and it happened to be on my final day in Singapore last Saturday. So I took some time to check out the event.
The event was caleld Singapore Social Media Day and it’s initiated by bloggers from Singapore with the help of omy.sg. The idea of the this event is to bring all bloggers and social media people together to participate in activities as well as donating to charitable foundations.
The response was pretty good and according to the @sgsmd twitter feeds, it was a very social event indeed. There were some music performances as well as a mini-bazaar where some of the proceeds went to charity. There was also a “creative sandwich making” contest. A lucky draw was also one of the main attraction where the lucky winner stand a chance to win a flight to HK.
I met @smithankyou in person and he initiated the idea of #sgsmd and I learned a lot from his interview and how different Singapore and Brunei perceive the power of social media. Thank you, @smithankyou, for your time and I congratulate you and your team on the successful event last weekend.
As for Brunei, we are in the midst of creating one social media event and it’s something that will bring us closer as a community and also for a good cause.

The charity expedition organised by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives is aimed at raising funds to help the tsunami and earthquake victims in Japan.
It is disheartening to see the various destructions our fellow neighbour has to overcome due to the disasters that hit Japan. With CSR being one of BIBD’s priorities in supporting the local communities, the team has extended its help to the victims to get through this difficult phase by raising as much funds as possible.
The BIBD Charity Expedition for Japan kicked off with a warm up – aerobics session, followed by safety briefings for the cycling and running before the flag offs.
The event that flagged off yesterday comprised of four events; a Charity Cycle, a Charity Run, a “Jalan-Jalan Saja” event and Charity Bazaar. About 200 participants took part in the 58 km Charity Cycle and more than 800 participants took part in the 11.4 km Charity Run and Walk. All expeditions started from and ended at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Flagging off the 11.4 km charity run was the guest of honour YB Pehin Yahya, while the 58 km charity cycle was flagged off by Yang Mulia Pg Datin Hjh Norsiah bte Pg Hamdan and BIBD’s Chief Financial Officer Hjh Noraini bte Hj Sulaiman flagged off the 2.89 km charity walk. It was overwhelming to see so many participants gathered at the National Stadium on a Sunday morning to show their support for the charity expedition. The event speaks for the commitment that participants have to support the people of Japan.
The gathering also showed that caring and helping others in need is also deep-rooted in the culture of our society. BIBD, through its CSR initiatives, wish to further inculcate this caring culture through various means that could bring in crowd as much as possible and create awareness of the unfortunate events that has been affecting our fellow neighbours and members of our community.
BIBD feels that CSR activities such as today’s event created an opportunity for the bank to reach out to the community and at the same time educate the public about the importance of unity. BIBD, being a responsible corporate citizen, will continue to support and organise CSR initiatives that could contribute positively to the community.
