Brunei U-21 were still all smiles despite the loss to Malaysia 50-19 in the round robin match in the 8th Asian Youth Netball Championship this afternoon
I knew it was gonna be a tough match. Brunei gave it their all. The defending champions Malaysia were simply unstoppable. Furthermore, they have more experience as well as the physique as compared to the Bruneians. Brunei only managed to score 4 points in the first quarter in reply to Malaysia’s 19 points. However, that didn’t demotivate the Brunei U-21 team. They still gave their 100% best on the court though we still made errors here and there.
The final score ended in a 50-19 victory to the defending champions. Brunei knew that the match against Hong Kong was the crucial one which they lost by 4 points two days earlier. Despite the final buzzer, the Brunei team was in high mood and still smiling because they knew they played to their best and they lost to a much better team.
Malaysia’s GS was formidable in attack and most passes she was able to receive with ease despite pressure from our defenders. That’s how good the Malaysians were. The visitors also used zonal pressing tactics whenever Brunei is in possession and their strategy paid off as Brunei kept committing turn overs from time to time.
There are still two more games to go for Brunei depending on the results in other matches. But I do hope for a miracle where we need a favour on Japan to cause an upset over Hong Kong which is a tall order.
Brunei’s coach Thilaka Jinadasa is very proud of her team. She said, “My target was to score around 25 points and we managed to keep the Malaysians scored at 50 and it’s good thing when you look at their experience that they have. I’m quite ok with our performance and also their fighting spirit and commitment on the court and they never gave up.”
Well done to our Brunei U-21 team and it is always awesome to see our local supporters cheering for the team from start to finish. I can see a bright future for Brunei netball. Later Hong Kong will take on Japan at 7:30pm at the indoor stadium.
