Black and white photo shoot happening right now.. It’s not too late! 😀
Munirah Mohamad, President of E@C (3rd from right) with the committee of E@C during their Hari Raya gathering
It was my second visit to the Entrepreneurship @ Campus (E@C) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam and I had a great time. I initially didn’t plan to stay longer but I ended staying until the event finished. I learnt something new and that was my friend David Chen whom I thought all this while I knew who David was but my ignorance proved me otherwise. Ah, more about him later but first’s thing first.
I’m amazed by E@C growth in the past few months. They recently launched their initiative a few months ago and this is in collaboration with Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) with the support of iCentre and now they have three to four incubatees stationed at E@C to date and the facilities are free to use. You must be a student at UBD or at a higher institution or tertiary level to be eligible for a space at E@C.
Why I was at E@C was because they had an open house and invited the stakeholders, friends and students from UBD and students from other colleges to enjoy the festive occasion as well as being entertained by the committee. They also invited local speakers especially those with entrepreneurship background: Harold and David Chen of Sunland Agri-Tech Pte Ltd, Delwin Keasberry, Programme Manager of Asia Inc Forum, Hj Azaman, Chairman of Google Development Group Brunei and Sabrina Wong of Sab Five Five, L’Orient.
I’m amazed by Sabrina Wong’s journey and it’s good to know that the public is getting to be aware of her product – Sab Five Five – and she’s the designer behind it. I’ve seen how she is behind the scene and it’s no surprise that she’s successful in her dreams and she has such a loving husband and two adorable kids. She’s even being invited to the Nanning Expo 2013 to showcase her product, thanks to MIPR. Good luck and you have all our support.
Next up was Hj Azaman and wow, many people were just so fascinated with the Google Glass that he was demo-ing to the participants. He is one of the lucky 8,000 owners of the Google Glass right now and it’s still in the beta stage and it’s not available in the market just yet. He shared that the Google Glass he has costs $1,500 and once it’s launched (delay) by first quarter of 2014, the price might be doubled or more. We shall wait and see.

David Chen and Harold share personal insights about their vision. I was impressed.
Now this was the highlight for me – the duo of David Chen and Harold. For some reason, I thought I knew David already. I was wrong. I was googling past articles and found that he has been busy with his father’s company, SunLand Agri-Tech Pte Ltd. Previously I just knew him as a friend who’s passionate about fencing and heads up, he’s organising an open competition soon too. Also under the flagship is Harold who has an interesting approach to business. I believe most of us fall to the trap of the real purpose of having a business. We forget or even take less notice of the values that it can bring to the community but focusing too much on reaping revenues and profits and expansion. One thing I learned from Harold was the means of doing business, is it an ethical approach? He has forgone previous businesses that brought less meaning to society despite its financial success. Awesome sharing, buddy. I was moved.
The last speaker was a celebrity social media guru Delwin Keasberry popularly known as @bruneitweet and he shared about the challenges and the experiences he went through as an entrepreneur and an employee of Asia Inc Forum. He regarded himself as a hybrid entrepreneur because of his dual role. I believe many Bruneians also fall into this category and it’s not easy to run a business or be engaged on a daily basis but still fun if you are loving what you do.
Good job, E@C on the wonderful event and a great mixture of speakers too. Selamat Hari Raya.
