Written by Phoon Jia Hui of S•League: Brunei DPMM left it late to beat Albirex Niigata (S) as they emerged narrow 4-3 winners over the Japanese outfit in the first leg of the RHB Singapore Cup quarter-final at Jurong East Stadium on Sunday evening.
DPMM coach Steve Kean felt that it was a deserved victory for his side and hailed match-winner Roy O’Donovan.
“I think there were good chances from Albirex but we stuck at it and Wardun’s [Yussof] made a few saves and obviously the woodwork came to the play a few times,” he said after the match.
“Even though we were physically dead, we still tried to keep the shape of the team and even at a time when we don’t play particularly well, the last 60 mins of the game and we still managed to win and that’s a good sign.
“When you have a player like Roy O’Donovan in the side, he can pop up and get a goal late on in the game like he’s showed today as he showed a bit of maturity and class at the end to find the target.”
However, it was a tale of two halves according to the former Blackburn Rovers manager who paid due credit to their opponents.
“Credit to Albirex, I felt they kept going,” he said.
“Like I said before the game, they are a technically good side and they play lots of good football. They came back but we showed the character.
“You’ve seen a total contrast in how the two halves were played, even the last 10 minutes of the first-half I thought it was all-Albirex and I thought they were better in the second-half.
“It’s only half-time, far from finished,” the 46-year-old concluded.
Albirex coach Tatsuyuki Okuyama on the other hand, admitted they put a poor defensive showing and stated that this was an area they had to work on.
“For the first 15 minutes, DPMM were very good offensively and defensively we just could not cope,” said the Japanese.
“We allowed them to attack from the first half and we could not push up the defense line and gave them too much space in midfield that’s why we conceded three goals in 15 minutes.
“Of course im not happy with today’s result, but throughout the season we need to improve on our defence. As for offence, we need to score when we can and we have got strikers who can do that.”

It’s been a while since I attended this show hosted by Elizabeth Sim who’s the lady behind the monthly show “Timeout with Liz”. She has hosted a couple of talk shows to give more exposure to the Brunei on our local talents in arts, music, food and many more. It’s never been an easy journey of Elizabeth as she has to find the right partners to make her show a success. I applaud her for her resilience to continue her show.
Currently I like the set up at Kaleidoscope which Liz has ran a few shows there. I actually enjoyed the set up at Kaleidoscope. So hoping it will be kinda of a permanent spot for Liz’ shows in the near future. Last week, we had the privilege to catch local talents – Siti Kamaluddin (Origin Films), Liyana Yus and Nadiah Wahid (stars of Yasmine), Ben Sia a pastry chef who gained experience from watching Youtube and Ruby Chong, an awesome vocalist who will be performing in Hollywood for WCOPA.
Below are some of the pictures from the previous event. I kinda enjoyed but sorry for leaving pretty early since I have Transformers 4 movie to catch.
I was pretending to be their special bodyguard for Liyana and Nadiah

I’m qute disappointed so far with Brazil. Yes, the host nation as they were pushed to the brink against Chile last night. Being the host nation, this is a very disappointing display by Brazil and if they were to have the same performance like last night, they won’t stand a chance against Colombia who beat Uruguay 2-0. Chile was pretty close from snatching the victory if it wasn’t for the bar that saved the blushes of Brazil from an excellent Pinilla’s strike near the end.
Probably the worrying factor are the strikers at Brazil’s disposal – Jo and Fred who haven’t yet to impress in the tournament and further more, Hulk was just showing his brilliance on the pitch after a lackluster performance in the first three matches. I don’t see Brazil heading as far to the finals with France and Germany also breathing down their necks.
Now Colombia is one team that many have not taken account for. They are a compact team with many creativity in attack with the likes of star player James Rodriguez, and Juan Cuadrado and they even topped the group stage with 9 points. Though the group stage didn’t possess much threat, they shone where other competent teams failed to when going against weaker opponents. I can see Colombia reaching the semi-finals but it will be a harder test either against France or Germany if one of them reaches the semis.
Of course, the biggest news that have faded away is the banning of Luiz Suarez for his biting incident in the Uruguay-Italy match. I believe the suspension given to him by FIFA is still kinda lenient considering the fact that this is the third time Suarez has been fined and suspended for similar incidents. As a Liverpool player, I am disappointed and this shows old habits die hard. I’m not sure what’s the future lies now for Luis Suarez and Liverpool.
So who are my picks for the rest? Germany to win, France to win, Netherlands to beat Mexico, Costa Rica to go through, Argentina to beat Swiss while Belgium will edge USA.
Chiellini bitten by the ever hungry Suarez
Suarez claims that he lost his balance *Yea right*
Neymar might need his other 10 to show up
James Rodriguez was simply awesome and he has now scored 5 goals
The most animated coach on the pitch – Miguel Herrara and he is one of the lowest paid coach
The expensive flops – Cesare Prandelli, Coach of Italy, Fabio Capello of Russia and Roy Hodgson of England – the top three highest paid coaches that failed to bring the team past the group stage

The Trash to Treasure Campaign today saw a big turnout at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas, exceeding its target of 200kg of recyclables.
With some 20 registrations from today alone, the T3 campaign successfully collected 546kg of trash from members of the public. The trash collected comprised 488kg of paper, 27kg of plastic, 8kg of aluminium, 2kg of metals and 21kg of electronic wastes.
The campaign, targeted at households and businesses, also generated the interest of a number of schools to participate in the campaign. “Our aim is to encourage people to recycle at home and at work. We are taking small steps to instill this positive habit,” said Asia Inc Forum’s conference manager, Nanette Ramos.
Through the T3 Campaign, Asia Inc Forum hopes to extend the habit of recycling from schools to households and businesses. Schools that are interested to participate in the campaign are encouraged to get their students to register their households, Ramos said.
Today’s T3 campaign marked the first collection, with its second and final collection scheduled to take place on August 10 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas. The campaign was held in conjunction with the National Environment Conference, to promote environmentally-conscious lifestyle and build a sustainable living environment in Brunei.
The highest recyclers from each category (household and business) will receive prizes during the National Environment Conference on 13th August 2014. All the proceeds raised from the recycling campaign will be donated to participating NGOs to fund for their environmental projects.
The T3 Campaign is a joint initiative between Asia Inc Forum, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) of the Ministry of Development, and Daikyo Environmental Recycling together with the conference partners; with TOTAL E&P Borneo B.V., Butra Heidelberg Cement, Baiduri Bank, and Brunei Press.

Hj Abu Bakar Hj Ibrahim, Chairman of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (center) with Mozart Hj Ibrahim and Hjh Rena Azlina binti Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Aziz, directors of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd and Ang Han Kee, Head of Network Management & Planning, Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd at the press conference yesterday at Radisson Hotel
The past is the past. Now it’s about moving forward. You may have heard or seen in the news about the new developments that B-Mobile Communications Sdn Bhd was going through a few months ago. A new company under the name of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd will run the operations of B-Mobile Communications effective 1st July 2014. This would mean the name of B-Mobile won’t be used anymore and it will be known as Progresif Cellular from 1st of July 2014.
A press conference was held yesterday, led by the chairman of Progresif Cellular, Hj Abu Bakar Hj Ibrahim. Also present during the press conference were the board of directors of Progresif Cellular, Mozart Hj Ibrahim and Hjh Rena Azlina binti Dato Paduka Hj Abdul Aziz.
I believe the great news about the press conference is the assurance that B-Mobile will not ceased its operation. Instead the service will be sustained and the everyday operations will be under a new management of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd. Acquiring an existing telco company is never an easy feat as they have to deal with many issues and paperwork. So it’s no surprise that the acquisition process took many months before it can be a successful one.
Hj Abu Bakar highlighted three important points which are important as their core values in achieving their vision as the most innovative mobile service provider in Brunei Darussalam. The first point he stated is the “People” which means the customers and their employees. It’s important to understand the needs and wants of customers and at the same time, it is important to train and develop the associates of Progresif Cellular so they can meet the demands of the customers in the best and most efficient ways possible.
The second point he shared was improving the network. This is no surprise that the existing subscribers of B-Mobile are experiencing inconsistent connectivity. He reassured that this issue will be put on a priority list and they have put on many countless hours in examining the problems that have been affecting the current network. Hj Abu Bakar hinted that the improvements of the network will be done in a gradual pace (in phases) and not instantly. I believe this is a great move by Progresif Cellular as I’ve seen telcos which focused too much on new services and products but forgetting the fundamental basics which is sustaining a good network.
The third point Hj Abu Bakar pointed out is building their brand. To me, it’s always important to create and make an impact, just by branding because it has a lasting impact and impression on consumers and that’s every entrepreneurs’ dream – to have a strong brand. From what I heard from the chairman’s speech is that the Progresif Cellular is very customer oriented and it wants to position itself to bridge that connection with its customers. Though this will take time to achieve such synergy and branding awareness to their customers, this is already a positive move by the company.
When asked about the 4G services, the chairman’s reply was simple – improve the existing network before upgrading their services and products. I’m quite excited what Progresif Cellular will be offering in the coming months and this will give a good competitive edge to their rival and of course, the winner here will be the consumers.
I’m also touched and honoured that the media was able to mingle with the chairman and the board of directors of Progresif Cellular after the press conference and this shows the trust they have on us and it’s also a good reflection of their vision and mission to create that relationship with their customers. In Brunei, it’s quite rare that we have an informal conversation during refreshments with directors of an organization. So I thank you for that opportunity and I’m sensing better things to come from Progresif Cellular.

DPMM FC extended their lead at the top of the Singapore League (S-League) to five points after triumphing 4-1 over 10-man Harimau Muda II (Malaysian national Under-21 football team) last Sunday. Brunei’s only professional team continue to lead the 12-team table and are now on 38 points from 18 games.
Ak Fakharazzi Pg Hassan, who was given his first start and only his second appearance for DPMM FC this season, notched a brace in the win at the Pasir Gudang Stadium in Johor, Malaysia. The midfielder gave the visitors the best of starts after finding the back of the net as early as the 10th minute. The lead was doubled after Rodrigo Tosi netted his 16th of the season from the penalty spot five minutes later.
Ak Fakhrazzi made it 3-0 just three minutes after the interval and Irish striker Roy O’Donovan made it nine straight goals for DPMM FC – dating back to their first meeting of the year – without reply against the Malaysian basement dwellers. Akhir Bahari scored a consolation goal for Harimau Muda in the 73rd minute and a red card for Nurshamil Abd Ghani four minutes later summed up the outing for the hosts. Tosi’s strike puts him at 16 goals for the season, his goal leaving him level with Albirex Niigata (S) FC’s Kazuki Sakamoto as the league’s joint top scorers.
DPMM FC will now shift their focus to the Singapore Cup where they will face Albirex in the quarter-finals on Sunday. Text by Yee Chun Leong of The Brunei Times.
