Happy 40th birthday Royal Brunei Airlines #RB40 #Royalbruneiair
Shawn celebrated his birthday a few weeks ago at Radisson Hotel after the Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club meeting
I believe he is slightly older than Royal Brunei 😀
A surprise plan that failed for Seng Yee’s birthday few weeks ago
We had a great dinner gathering at iLotus
It was a hat theme night and it was weird to see Hazwan, Shawn and Ruey wearing a cap 😀
Azeemah Zaki trekked to the summit of Mt. Snowdon (highest mountain in Wales) and it was part of her fundraiser to donate to the Human Relief Foundation for the children of Syria affected by the war.
The trek was organised by University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle and she managed to raise £643 for her cause as she needed at least £150 to trek the mountain. The University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle raised a total of £8,279 in the end. Awesome!! Below are the pictures shared by Azeemah during their trekking journey at Mt. Snowdon.
Yesterday, Maju Motors, the authorised dealer for Volkswagen (VW), held a customer’s day. Lots of Volkswagen customers showed up with their car and posed for the camera. There was also free BBQ food being provided and music for entertainment. This was one way of appreciating Volkswagen customers from Maju Motors for their continuous support. You can view more photos here from their Facebook Page.
Zul-Fadly (Happy Birthday bro) with the Jae of Chaps & Rebels
Movember Brunei this year will feature, for the first time ever in Brunei, a ‘Mustache’ competition called The Sh’Mo’ Down. The competition is divided into three categories; the Thickest Mo. the Hippest Mo and the Innovative Mo.
Currently there are a handful of ‘MoBros’ who have registered and it will be very interesting to see the quality of mustaches being ‘groomed’ seriously in Brunei. It’s a growing trend here as the men are slowly becoming more aware of how they present themselves in the public. Registration is still open and all you have to do is email your name and contact number to our email, movemberbrunei@gmail.com
This year we have the support of Chaps & Rebels, a local barber shop owned and run by our own local guys who have paved the way for those seeking the ‘gentleman’ look. An online entrepreneur who sells beard oils on instagram and goes by the ig account, @DreamBeardBWN. Armtirx enterprise who has agreed to print the limited edition MovemberBrunei Tees. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Brunei for agreeing to become our official venue for the Sh’Mo’ Down.
Movember Brunei also has amazing support from the social media like Facebook and Instagram. The hashtag #movemberbn is getting new feeds everyday. Huge thanks to everyone and anyone on the social media platform who has repost, retweeted and shared all things related to Movember Brunei, Thank you very much!
Growing a mo in Movember is not just a fashion statement but the true message and responsibilty that comes with it. The ‘Mo’ represents the awareness. If someone asks why go through all the trouble of growing a Mo in November? One can say because we care! Its not a trait of a Man to share that they are ill/sick. However, the number of men affected by cancer is as many if not more than women. Movember does not just highlight testicular cancer or prostate cancer, it covers depression as well and men’s health in general. Do it for the grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, sons, nephews and grandsons who have been fortunately survived or sadly, unfortunately, did not make it through.
If you believe that prevention is better than cure, then go get checked! Grow that mo because you care! We grow it because we want the future generation of men to be confident and be able to remove the stigma that men do not get or rarely get sick. Press release and images courtesy of Zul Fadly.

Dato Paduka Dr. Zulkarnain, the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education with the members of the Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club
Late post: This month, we are proud to wear the toastmaster badge to commemorate the milestone that Toastmasters International have reached since its inception in 1924. Three weeks ago, Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club held their 2nd meeting (held every Friday end of the month) and it’s always customary to invite a guest of honour on every meeting.
The guest of honour was Dato Paduka Dr. Zulkranain, the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education. He found the BASC meeting quite educational and entertaining and he was very pleased that UBD also chartered their own toastmasters club two months ago. He recommended the youth and the public to attend a toastmasters meeting as it will not also improve your speaking skills but your listening skills too. He was impressed with the conducive and comfortable environment which allows newbies to feel more welcomed and making the learning process fun and enjoyable.
The speakers for the evening were Reuben Chin and Zainal Bostaman. The table topics winner was a first time guest, Hj Saiful Rhymin (well done).
So guys, if you want to attend a meeting of any of our toastmasters club in Brunei, here you go:
UBD Toastmasters Club – 7:30pm to 9pm Every Monday at Student Centre, Inspiring Hall
Brunei Speakers’ Club – 7:30pm to 9:30pm Every Tuesday at Seameo Voctech (Gadong)
OTTERS Club – 7:30pm to 9:30pm Every Wednesday at OGDC (Seria)
Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club – 7:30pm every Friday end of the month. Venue TBA
It’s always great to see new guests coming in to observe (or even participate) during the toastmasters meeting. I can guarantee you that it’s a great avenue to improve your leadership skills too and you can get more testimonials from our regular guests. I’m a member of the Brunei Speakers’ Club and I will do my best to contribute to the club and the community to spread the awareness of toastmasters. It has not made me only a better speaker but also a great leader. It’s a never ending process and of course, the best of the lot is my supporting buddies from toastmasters. How can you turn down a learning experience with positive environment?

Taking a swim at River Cafe at Maya Ubud
I didn’t take much photos at Bali since I didn’t go to many places of interests in Bali. Most of the time, I was staying at Ubud area which is quite remote from the popular cities of Kuta and Seminyak. Nonetheless, I had a great time bonding with my friends from all over the world at Ubud and learnt a thing or two that me aware of in the past week or so. Hence, why I am so inspired by David the Nomadic Lion who inspires others with his vision to spread humanitarian by means of walking and exchanging stories and cultures. He represents abundance and I am inspire to feel as abundant as him one day.
I shall be returning to Bali next year and my friends and I are already eyeing Lombok (a few hours away drive from Bali) which my friends recommended to visit and even David. Have a great weekend, peeps!!
At Clear Cafe. Similar to Energy Kitchen and I like the idea where you have to take your foot wear before entering
Creme Bulle at Room 4 Dessert
Nice desserts at Room 4 Dessert. Highly recommended.

I love the dinner concept at Maya Ubud
Having great fun at water rafting. The rapids weren’t as challenging.

The British High Commissioner hosted a Civil Society and Chevening Alumni Roundtable discussion and networking event yesterday evening at the Residence. The aim of the event was to bring together civil society organisations and Chevening Alumni to network, share best practice, find synergies and identify opportunities for collaboration.
British High Commissioner H.E. David Campbell said “It was fascinating to hear from such a diverse range of organisations, all making a real contribution to Bruneian society and environment. Many were now planning their projects for 2015 which we will follow with close interest. It was good to have the perspective of our Chevening scholars too.”
Civil Society Organisations present covered a wide range of issues in Brunei from the environment (Green Brunei, Green Apeel), to wildlife (1stopbrunei Wildlife, CAS) to social welfare (SCOT, the Women’s Council, MKM, BASMIDA, Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council). All CSOs were invited to give short, forward looking presentations on their upcoming activities and projects. Also present were representatives from Standard Chartered Bank who gave a brief overview of the work they do in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Posing with Adrian Chu and I bought a painting of his during his “I Am Adrian” showcase at Mabohai Shopping Complex
I’m proud of Adrian Chu who managed to raise $1,000 during his mini art exhibition at Mabohai Shopping Complex three weeks ago. All the paintings that was showcased were painted by him. The 17 year old autistic artist is also a big fan of Michael Jackson and I was fortunate enough to buy one of his paintings of MJ. The art exhibition was entitled “I Am Adrian”.
Yesterday, he handed over donations in a form of art supplies worth of $500 to Pusat Ehsan. The art supplies were five sets of complete art supplies, canvases and 10 easels.
The donations were received by Nurul Huda Hj Muhin, Acting Head of Administration of Pusat Ehsan. Also present were the management of Mabohai Shopping Complex and Adrian’s parents (Wai-Ming and Sally).
Yvonne Kuan and Adella also paid a visit

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to explore a prehistoric lost land when massive dangerous roaring dinosaurs still roamed the earth? If so, then look no further than the NBT Jurassic Adventure at the Brunei Edutainment Wonderland 2014. The huge theme park will transport eager visitors back in time to over 65 million years ago when dinosaurs walked the earth. The specially-designed attraction will feature life-sized dinosaur replicas of the vicious tyrannosaurus rex, brontosaurus, pterodactyls, and many more species set in a realistic backdrop of their natural habitat.
Designed with edutainment in mind, the NBT Jurassic Adventure will not only entertain with its life-like dinosaur forms, it will also educate visitors on the life of the ancient extinct beasts. Interesting facts on the dinosaurs may be found all around the theme park not only that there will also be a dedicated viewing area where visitors will be able to watch a documentary on dinosaurs.
And the interactive interesting experiences do not stop there. In one section of the theme park visitors will be able to play out the role of a researcher excavating for fossils (the only evidence of the Jurassic behemoths). Visitors walking around the park might even be lucky enough to come across raptors seeking their next prey.
Entry tickets for the spectacular NBT Jurassic Adventure will be priced at $10 for adults and $6 for children. Good news for Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) card holders is that they are entitled to a 15 percent discount on entry tickets when they choose to purchase tickets with their BIBD card.

Let’s help Azeemah who will be trekking at Mount Snowdon to raise funds for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal. It’s good to know that she has reached her target and the event is tomorrow. Saturday 15th November. You can still donate for the good cause and good luck, Azeemah :))
A message from Azeemah’s fundraiser page: I, Azeemah Natasha Hj Mohd Khairul Zaki from Brunei Darussalam, will be trekking Mt. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales for the purpose of a charity hike organised by University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle. However, to make this possible, I need to raise at least 150 pounds.
Inside the war-torn country, an estimated 3.2 million children have been forced from their homes. Another 1.5 million children have fled the country and are now living in over-stretched refugee camps or villages. The most vulnerable children are those who remain inside Syria, who risk death, illness, abuse and exploitation on a daily basis. The humanitarian needs are incalculable, thus we need your help to raise money and awareness for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal.
Thank you for your time and generosity! May God bless you. End.

Walk the Talk
Millions free seats to give away
Who needs money when you can lead a simple life? Who needs a car or a bike when you can just walk? Who needs shelter when you can simply make your own or being offered/accepted by welcoming individuals to their homes?
There are many interesting questions or scenarios that many asked when I posted his picture on my instagram and it’s about a story about the David Attowe’s journey and he is a walking brand known as “Nomadic Lion” (you can also follow him on @nomadiclion instagram).
When he walks, he is able to tell a story or even hear stories from different walks of life and cultures. If he were to be given a lift by a car or other means of transport, that conversation won’t be as engaging as it will be only for a short time due to the convenience of a transport. Good point there!! He’s trying to send a message for all of us to slow down and appreciate every single thing in our lives and be grateful of what we have in front of us. I have to admit he is a true icon of abundance and he doesn’t need all the luxuries if you were to give him. That really shows how much of a visionary David is.
I recently met up with him after his interview on UBD FM last week and he is such a welcoming character and what caught my eyes was his trolley that he modified for his bag pack. Awesome!! So I brought him for so called “limteh” at Fleur de Lys and I didn’t know he’s a sucker for cheese cakes but of course, he still loves the cheese cakes back in his country (England).
I won’t waste much time now and I shall post the questions that were asked by my followers on instagram.
Follow David Attowe’s journey on Facebook and instagram @nomadiclion. Image courtesy of @nomadiclion
Yes, he showers everyday in fact. There was one situation where he would shower in the rain but at night if he happens to sleep outdoor. Shower butt naked *lol*
He will sleep every where possible but he tries to avoid sleeping by the roadside. In Brunei, he was fortunate that he was being offered to stay at a few places. His success rate of asking for shelter at people’s home in Borneo has been at 95%. Interesting.
The three fascinating things about Brunei are the people, the mangroves and the mini crocodiles. Yes, he is a big fan of mangroves and he believes Brunei has the best mangrove so far in Borneo.
He’s a big fan of noodles aka Maggi. He has eaten all flavours with egg but one that remains his favourite is Indo Mee.
The things that he brings in his bag are his notebook (Sony and he needs a new one since it’s almost broken), his camping gear, three sets of his Rasta colour top, medical kit and his SLR.
He wears the red, green and yellow top (like a Rasta man) because he used to live in Jamaica and stayed in the mountains for months. This top also catches the attention of the people whenever he walks.
He is an advocate humanitarian, a photographer, a videographer and an aquarium designer. Interesting, right? And he is still single.
Some of the challenges that he went through was such as lack of access to food and water, getting bitten by ants and mosquitoes but the biggest challenge is more on the mental quadrant. It’s important to stay happy and positive.
People of inspiration for him are Mahatma Ghandi, Vinoba Bhave & Bob Marley. He walks to create a change and inspire people. His inspiration song is from Bob Marley’s Soul Rebel.
Funnily enough he doesn’t have blisters and he wear the perfect sandals for his walk. He can just keep on walking and walking without feeling pain. I guess he has the right type of sole for his feet that makes a lot of difference. When I do my half marathon, I was already struggling at the 5k mark due to the minor pains in my joints and ankle.
Today he left bandar around 5:30am as he heads off to Miri which will take him at least 3 to 4 days. He has been in Brunei Darussalam for a good two weeks and he was also in good company. Sometimes in life, we always seek for more and more but not for David. He is more than happy on what he has and money hasn’t been an issue on his journey. Now how many of us can live the life that he is experiencing – abundance.
He is bound to be back next year to Brunei and I look forward for his presence. All the best, buddy.

I finally get to meet an inspirational icon for humanitarian, David Atthowe famously known as Nomadic Lion for his humanitarian project
He was excited to meet up my good friend SY and yes, David does own a smart phone (Nokia)
Did you know that his bag pack weighs at least 10 kilo? So what’s inside the bag? His notebook, camping gear equipment, hammock, 2 set of clothes, medical kit and survival kit to name a few. He uses a trolley which he hopes to refine to make it more practical for his walking journey.
Did you know that he loves cheese cakes? He applauded on the cheese cakes he tried at one of the places near Mount KK and the best he tried was in Europe. So peeps, anything with baked cheesecake, he is sold 😀
David walked from indoor stadium to Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and he was greeted with the team from Tourism Development Department headed by Mariani Sabtu, Acting Director of Tourism Development Department.
During that 1 kilometre journey, he had some runners joining the short walk with him.
David talking to the media at the press conference
A notice that David will be heading to Sports School on Saturday morning
He prefers to walk in this than sneakers and he hardly gets blisters even on his sole. Amazing!!

He is also the 1st Bruneian to run the Polar Circle Marathon, participating in the Polar Bear Challenge, which tested his ability to run both the marathon and a half-run within the two days of the competition.
Earlier before the Polar Circle Marathon, Asari mentioned, “I’ve had a lot of people telling me it’s difficult but this is something I really want to try.” Asari, clearly unfazed by the idea of the run, continued, “I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009 with tendency of having seizures but it has never stopped me from doing what I love. I am also very thankful to BIBD for providing me with the opportunity to embark on my dream, as together we are able to show the world that everyone has the ability to succeed, regardless of their drawbacks.
“I was inspired to take the feat in order to raise awareness of the needs of people with diseases and show that we are both resilient and determined not to let it become an obstacle in pursuing our dreams including achieving better education. Everyone needs education and it will start from their adolescence, children need to be given as much opportunity in life as possible.”
Asari is no stranger to long distance running, having trained with the Tyne Bridge Harriers running club, had already competed in numerous challenges including completed a Aviva Singapore Ironman 70.3, three marathons, and an Ultramarathon “The Wall” from Carlisle to Newcastle Gateshead, which saw him running 110km miles in an impressive 15hrs and 55mins. The Polar Circle Marathon included a classic 42.195km marathon and a half marathon. The Marathon was held in the worst running conditions of under – 20°C in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland for two consecutive days.
Starting at Kangerlussuaq, the run passes the endless ice and arctic tundra of Greenland, which makes up the glacial deposit landscapes and soundless arctic desert. Part of the route takes place on the 100,000-year-old ice sheet but the main part of the race is run on roads, mostly covered in snow that connects to the inland ice just north of the Polar Circle.

A similar effort for awareness, BIBD’s ALAF Programme (Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future), provides a similar avenue for all members of the public to support and provide assistance to underprivileged and orphaned students, through sponsorships of basic needs, educational items and welfare, as well as mentoring and counselling, so that the students can stay focused on their education and maximise their potential. Through ALAF, BIBD hopes to lend its support to His Majesty’s 2035 vision of achieving a 100 per cent level of education and over time, reduce poverty in Brunei.
To further support the aspiration of this program and to enable the deserving students to pursue their education and dreams, members of the public are welcome to provide contributions with a minimum of B$1.01 via the bank’s e-banking channels, BIBD Online, BIBD Mobile, or use any BIBD ATM machines. The public can also use the standing instruction function in their accounts to provide a continuous donation stream into the ALAF account at 1018181811.

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has opened another window for applications to its “GRANT for the Development of Local ICT and Digital Media Industries” from 1 November 2014 to 31 December 2014.
The AITI GRANT offers partial funding opportunities for local businesses as well as foreign companies with local partners from the ICT and digital media fields to acquire enhancement, ownership and marketing assistance for their existing “Brunei-Made” product or prototype that has significant commercial viability. There are three (3) grant types available, namely:
a) Enhancement Grant – for improving and upgrading existing products;
b) Ownership Grant – for obtaining certification and quality management systems such as trademarks, patent, and IPR; and
c) Marketing Grant – for marketing and improving existing branding, packaging, design or labeling.
The grant amount varies depending on the type of grant applied and the classification of the businesses. Each applicant is allowed to apply for more than one grant type for the same product with a maximum cap of B$300,000 per category within eighteen (18) months project duration.
To be eligible for the AITI GRANT, an applicant must have valid AITI Accredited Business (AAB) Status and has financial capability to inject an initial amount of self-funding prior to the start of the GRANT project. The applicant must also have developed an existing product or prototype and wishes to obtain the grant to improve and enhance the technological aspects of the product, to improve marketing strategies, as well as to acquire a wider coverage of Intellectual Property Rights protection for their product.
Applications will be evaluated based on four main criteria: technical merits, commercial potential, financial resources, and project plan and capacity to deliver. Further evaluation will also emphasize on Brunei-Made elements of the proposed product as well as the relevancy to any of the following areas: application tools and platforms, communication, e-learning, financial industry application, government and public sectors, health and wellbeing, social inclusion and community, industrial application, media and entertainment technology, ICT research and development, retail and supply chain management, security, and sustainability and environment technology.
AITI Grant Scheme
