Make Oasia Your Oasis

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in RA News

I love Oasia!!!!

Oh yes…. The phrase says it all…

Oasia Hotel is located at Novena and it has an interesting architectural feel

Sorry peeps… This post was overdue and it was during my last trip to Singapore last April where I was hotel hopping. So finally, one of the hotels that many of my readers have been requesting to post and here it is…..

One word to describe Oasia – “Awwweeeesomeee…!” It was my first time at Oasia Hotel and I’ve heard so much abou the hotel and I remember the presentation done by Singapore Tourism Board on the recommended list of hotels and Oasia is one of them. So it was a privilege that I finally get to experience the hospitality at Oasia Hotel which is located near the city area.

I love the layout of the room I checked in at Club Level. The ambience was just right and I’m always particular when it comes to Wifi too and it’s inclusive as well as a patron of the Club Level rooms. The club room is not as spacious as Albert Village Court Hotel but still just the right size for me.

There’s even an espresso machine *awesome* though I don’t drink espresso. The bathroom is spacious. Oh yeah, the TV HD is freaking huge and it has a cool, welcoming personalised menu once you switch on the TV for their guests too.

Those who are staying at Club Level, you will enjoy the perks at the Club Lounge (Level 22) which serves great coffee, tea and breakfast too. The Club Lounge also has an infinity pool and guests can check in or check out through the front desk at Level 22.

Perhaps the greatest advantage for me is the location. Though it’s not located around Orchard but Oasia Hotel is just next to Novena Square where there is also an MRT (one or two minutes walk from the hotel) and Orchard is just two stops away. So this hotel really suits me in terms of being away from the hustle and bustle of Orchard.

Oasia Hotel is also convenient for patients of Novena Medical Center which is also next door. My mom does her physiotherapy at Novena Medical Center on a regular basis so I’m quite familiar with this area. So this is a suitable medical hub in Singapore.

So to my readers, you can enjoy 10% discount if you make reservations through here and these are only available for Club room and on weekends. The weekend package includes 1) daily buffet breakfast at Club Lounge 2) Unlimited Internet Access 3) Buffet dinner for two at Zaffron 4) Daily cocktail and canapés form 6pm to 8pm at Club Lounge 5) Exclusive usage of pool at the Living Room (22nd floor).

Click on this link and you can enjoy 10% discount from the weekend rates at Oasia Hotel. Oh yeah, if you want to more in-depth reviews from others, you can read comments from Trip Advisor.

The corner room (Deluxe Room) at Oasia Hotel. The Deluxe Room is cheaper than the Club Room.

Ok, this is the room I’m staying at (Club Room). I was just feeling jobless playing the timer with my Canon that day *lol*

The welcoming menu from the huge TV… Quite unique I must say.

Nice piece of art in the room

This is also important if I were to be a guest at any hotel

Toiletries are provided too

Ah… they used Thann bathing gels 😀

Ok, another jobless moment indeed

The espresso machine is available at the Club Room

You can dine at Zaffron on ground level

We had a quick lunch at Zaffron

This lady is good at making coffee. Taken at the Club Lounge.

The choices of tea you can choose and each tube has a distinctive smell too

I had the mocha latte during my hi-tea at Club Lounge

The hotel pool is located on the 8th floor

You can also host events here which is on the 8th floor

Oasia Hotel is just next to these buildings including Novena Square where you can catch the MRT to other destinations

Do try out Curry Times (part of Old Chang Kee) at Novena Square. You won’t miss this when you walk from Oasia to Novena Square. Carol and I love the food there.. *Yummm*

As I mentioned before that Novena is just two stops away from Orchard. How convenient 😀

Who will be the chosen one?

After 6 years into the project, Red Bull Rookies Racing 2012 will get a new look. Previously an all-female drivers team, this time a battle of sexes will be introduced to bring in the male drivers. All Bruneians (Yellow and Red IC holders) between the age of 18 and 25 years old are encouraged to participate.

The audition will be held at Times Square from 18th to 20th May 2012. Anybody born between 31st December 1994 and 1st January 1987 is eligible to take part. Valid IC’s are to be presented during the registration process. The male team which is to be spearheaded by Mark Darwin, a Malaysian, as the anchorman while the female team will be led by Melissa Huang of Singapore.

Red Bull Rookies Racing was introduced to Brunei Darussalam in 2010 where Noradzlianayati Abdul Razak (Liana) and Melline Jaini (Mel) made their debut and last year Fauziah Haziz (Ogy) made history as she was the first Bruneian to start the Sepang 1000km Race in Red Bull colours. And she did exceptionally well combining with Puteri Ayu Yasmin of Malaysia and Emmiline Ang of Singapore. The team came home in 15th placing out of 28 teams that started the race. It was a remarkable result considering the drivers were rookies and the only all-female team.

Mr.Raymond Lee, the Area Sales Manager (Brunei Darussalam) said that Red Bull introduced and continued this legacy project in the hope to provide the opportunity of a lifetime to potential young champions who have the dream to excel in racing industry. Many times it is very costly for one individual to prepare and race.

Come the 20th May 2012, 3 female and 3 male qualifiers will be announced to take part in the multi-stages and stringent elimination process to be conducted by the team led by Team Manager cum Trainer, Mr. Kenvin Low. Mr Low possesses an impressive resume in terms of racing and coaching. This will be his fourth year handling the team.

This is how the seach for the drivers will look like and the time line.. A bit confusing but you will understand soon

The Revenue Division of the Ministry of Finance has continued its series of STARS Discovery Day Roadshow on 9 May 2012 at 8:30am at the Theatre Hall, Ministry of Finance Building. The is the second roadshow of a series of roadshows to introduce the System for Tax Administration and Revenue Services (STARS). The guest of honour is Puan Hjh Ning-Lela binti Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Permanent Secretary (Performance). The roadshow was attended by company directors, accountants, auditors and tax agents.

STARS was first launched on 22 October 2011, gradually rolled-out to the tax community in stages. This system provides online access to a suite of transactions, enquiry and account management services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The most prominent feature of STARS is the electronic service that allows tax payers to submit their tax returns online. With the access online, the taxpayers will be able to enjoy the ease and comfort of performing their tax obligations such as filing tax returns wherever internet access is available. With this online system, the tax payers no longer have to physically come to the Revenue Division to make payment, as this can be done online.

Taxpayers are now required to file and pay for their Income Tax Returns for years of assessment 2012 onwards by a new submission date which is 30th June. Taxpayers are also required to submit and pay their estimated chargeable income within three (3) months after the end of the accounting period, as stated under Section 52A(i) of the Income Tax Act relating to that year of assessment.

At this roadshow, the Revenue Division also shared the latest amendments to the Income Tax Act, such as the reduction of the corporate tax rate from 22% to 20% for Year of Assessment 2012. Tax incentives were also explained whereby in support of local employment, tax credits can be claimed for employing locals and sending local employees for training.

So the next roadshow will be tomorrow Wednesday 16th May at Theatre Hall, Ministry of Finance. Workstations for online presentations will be provided and participants are encouraged to bring your own notebooks or tablets with WiFi/3G to avoid queueing. You can book your seat by calling 238 0651.

Pre-requisites steps to filing your tax returns online are:

1. Directors of a company must register personally with STARS
2. To enable access for an employee to perform tax matters on behalf of the company, the director must set up a relationship with the employee in STARS.
3. To enable access for a tax agent to perform tax matters on behalf of the company, the director must set up a relationship with their tax agency in STARS.

Helpdesk

Taxpayers who need help with filing their tax returns via STARS can visit the Revenue Division where STARS kiosks are available with the assistance of a Revenue Division representative. Taxpayers can also call the STARS helpline on + (673) 238 3933 or 2380651. These services are available daily during working hours only from 8am to 12pm and 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Additionally, taxpayers may email to revenue@mof.gov.bn. Latest information may also be obtained from the facebook and Twitter @RevenueDivision

I can also registered online personally even though I don’t have a company account

This is how it will look like online

Apparently I didn’t know that I’m still a director of these companies *lol*

The next roadshow will be tomorrow 16th May from 8:30am at Theatre Hall, MOF. Please call 238 0651 for details or bookings.

Make a date to Boracay

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in RA News

When shall I make my way to Boracay?

So I’ve heard so much about Boracay which has one of the best beaches in the world!!!! Did you know that it is voted as one of the world’s best beach by the Sun Herald, Australia? It’s a good getaway island located in Aklan provence, 345km south of Manila. It is accessible by air from Manila through two principal gateways: Caticlan Airport or Kalibo Airport.

Reading from the articles, there are tons of things you can do at Boracay Island. Of course, some of the things you can do are diving, snorkeling and windsurfing. You can also sail around the island or kayaking, paddle boat, speed boating and many more.

It’s a norm that most travelers love to lie under the sun or under the shade of coconut trees. The sunset is something to be amazed of from the view of the beach. And when the night hits, there will be more exciting activities in store for tourists.

Now doesn’t the beach look awesome??

You can get massages on the beach too

There’s also under water activity

Another great view of the beach… Don’t you just want to relax here?

Lots of tourists on the beach

Wanna do parasailing?

Boracay Beach also known for its seafood

There’s a huge chance that I will be flying over there to feel the “Boracay Experience” so that would be an excellent coverage for my readers. I’m pretty sure a few Bruneians have ventured here after hearing rave reviews of the island.. Forget Bali, Kosamoi, Pulau Redang for the moment.. Boracay is the in-thing in terms of beach experience.

So the question is how do you get there? Easy peasy… Now Anthony Tours have launched a special package where you can go to Boracay for a 4 days 3 nights holiday package (31st May to 3rd June) and this is considered a long weekend because of the Army Day in Brunei.

The package is as low as BND 999 and you will be catching two flights (RBA and Cebu Pacific) and it includes Hotel Twin Share room only, return transfer Airport-Hotel. You can book online or call Anthony Tours 222 2666, 222 8668 or 222 7965.

Check out the great deal on

Break-ins getting very common

This was taken last April and both incidents happened on the same day but different locations.

This happened outside the parking area of Batu Bersurat Basketball area and this happened to one of my friends last night. Sad to hear..

Now it’s time for us be alert whenever we leave our car at public places even at car park areas. I became aware of the current trend where windows are smashed in as robbers are getting more courageous in their evil deeds. I remember a car being broken into and it was only two cars away from me. So that made me become more mindful of what I put in my car since everything space in my car is visible due to the structure of the SUV car.

This is a tricky situation for the relevant authorities to come up with suggestions on how reduce such break-ins. Even the basement car park of The Empire Hotel ain’t as safe as before. I’ve read tweets where cars have been broken into and even one of the drivers told me about it when I was parking my car at the open space area next to the Indera Samudra Grand Hall at The Empire Hotel.

So just a tip to share with you is not to leave your bag inside the car. Handbag or camera bag or any bag at all. Unless it’s a luggage or trunk, they might think twice about breaking in. I wonder if there’s such insurance for this type of cases… hmmm…

This happened during SCB’s charity run last year outside the indoor stadium. This car was just two cars away from mine. The authorities came for investigation but the damage has been done.

The trial run for #WalkRunCycle2012

What a great jogging session we had last Saturday as a group of us jogged the actual 11.5k run for #walkruncycle2012 starting from Radisson Hotel though. I managed to finish the route without walking but my feet are slightly aching *lol* Thanks to Rizan and Hj Adi for ushering us from the beginning till the end and it was great jog too among friends. Are you ready this weekend?

What a cracking finale!!!

What an amazing finish to the season!!

Everyone thought it will be smooth sailing for Manchester City as they take on relegation battler QPR. There was so much stake on hand. Why? QPR must win to ensure safety or rely on other results to favour their way. Manchestery City must win at least to lift the title from defending champions United.

The unexpected happened when QPR took the lead in the 2nd half 2-1 even with a numerical disadvantage after Barton was dismissed for misconduct (This player must be sold off at any cost). In come Dzeko late in the game and he had a poor 2nd half season as his goals dried up. His contribution paid off after he equalised two minutes into injury time. But it was Aguero who stole the show with his injury time winner with a composed finisher and brought the fans to delight, roar and tears of joy.

Sunderland were already losing by a solitary goal to Manchester United after Rooney put them ahead. However, QPR didn’t return the favour as a draw from MC-QPR match would have gifted United the title. What a climax to the season and me as a Liverpool fan was enjoying the battle of the Manchesters and I’ve never witnessed such a finish to the season. This is what I call football and everything can happen within seconds or minutes.

The wait is over. The 44 year wait is over.. Well done, City and well deserved. It’s surely “noisy” in Manchester but the colour in blue. Now bring on Euro 2012..

Happy Mother's Day

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in RA News

You Raise Me Up

Mom also collects Adidas so at least it’s not just me *lol*

Whenever I listen to the song by Josh Groban – You Raise Me Up, it reminds me a lot of my mother who plays an instrumental part of my life and even to this day. Though we hardly close as we were before, I truly and deeply appreciate for the endless support you have given me ever since I was a little boy. Now three decades have gone so fast and I’m no more a little kid. However, the things that I’m experiencing right now and my current journey, I would have to say that you played a vital role. Thank you once again for being a good role model and I always think of you a lot though we never spent time together. Hope you received the flowers. Thank you for being part of my life. Love you loads, Mom!!

Red Bull-NFABD Futsal Champions League

The National Football Association Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) and Red Bull signed a title sponsorship agreement for the Red Bull-NFABD Futsal Champions League yesterday at the Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex.

The Red Bull-NFABD Futsal Champons League is an expansion of the Red Bull-NFABD Futsal Championship inaugurated last year. Champions QAF FC ‘B’ earned the right to play at the Red Bull Tri-Nations Cup, which was co-hosted by Red Bull Brunei and NFABD.

Singapore and Malaysia also participated in the tournament, with QAF FC ‘B’ emerging as eventual winners after a closely-competed round robin match with the representatives from Malaysia.

Signing on behalf of the NFABD was the General Secretary, Mohd Noor Hj Abdullah, and on behalf of Red Bull, Mr Raymond Lee, the Area Sales and Marketing Manager of Allswell Trading Pte Ltd, a Singaporean company licensed to sell Red Bull products in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore.

Also present to witness the signing was the President of the NFABD, Dato Paduka Abdul Rahman Mohiddin, Manager of the DST National Football League, Hj Mohd Taha Hj Mohd Tahir, and officials and representatives from Red Bull Brunei. During the signing ceremony, Mr Raymond Lee said of the tournament, “Red Bull is excited at the prospect of doing its bit in developing the sport in the country.”

Forty teams from around the country will be competing in the Red Bull-NFABD Futsal Champions League, separated into eight groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knock-out rounds.

The eventual winners and runners-up will be eligible to represent the country at the Red Bull Tri-Nations Cup, to be held in October, in Kuala Lumpur.

The agreement shows more signs of intent from the NFABD to build upon the recent success Brunei had during the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy Tournament and lay down the foundations for future teams, by using tournaments such as this and the DST National Football League as a means of scouting talent and promoting the sports of futsal and football throughout the country. Dark Shadows falling flat

The cool prop of Dark Shadows at The Mall Cineplex

Dark Shadows. Ah.. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp combined again for the … eerr, I lost count here… but I have to say it’s not the strongest movie from Tim Burton. I felt this was just a passable movie for my taste. I’ve seen their other collaborations and I enjoyed most of it. Visually this is pretty good and I love the classic soundtracks too.

What disappointed me is the flow of the story and the lack of character from the other casts. Those I thought that would made significant screen appearances only appeared here and there and I felt the relationship between the characters lacked the special connection. There are some highlights in this movie but can be easily forgotten once you leave the cinema unlike The Avengers where people will boast about Hulk/Thor scene or how Ironman/Stark was awesome etc. As for Dark Shadows, there was nothing worth to boast about really.

Their collaboration had so much potential but Dark Shadows short changed me. Verdict: 6/10. Del Goh and Sophia gave it an 8 surprisingly.

Being bald pays :p

LOL.. I never expected this to happen in the first place. It was just from a normal conversation between YC Lee and I as he offered $200 for my head to be shaved and he will donate $200 for the cause for my #walkruncycle2012 initiative. Before it could be discussed further, he stood up and brought it to the attention of the 40 people who were at the lunch gathering few days ago.

This time, it was a bigger agenda.. He raised the stake to $2,000 for my bald look and within minutes, we managed to collect half the amount. Only last night, it broke past the $2,000 mark and I ended up being shaved by my buddies *lol* The money raised will be accumulated as part of the #walkruncycle2012 donation card which I will have to return tomorrow (Saturday) as it is the deadline.

A big thanks to YC Lee for making this possible (out of the blue) and the support from my friends too as they were anticipating to see the outcome of the ordeal. The last time I had a bald look was back in 2003 which was quite a long time ago. So peeps, don’t be startled when you see the bald version of me. I’m definitely growing it back to normal :p Once again, my gratitude and thanks to those who contributed as this means a lot to the charitable foundations.

Within less than 48 hours, an amount of $2000+ was raised to see my bald look for the upcoming #walkruncycle2012

YC Lee did the honour of shaving off my hair

And others joined in to shave off my hair

I was a bit worried about the razor blade part.. Didn’t know YC Lee was pretty skillful in making sure I didn’t bleed

Half an hour later, this is my new look. The donation was handed over to me officially for #walkruncycle2012 funds

The awesome bunch who contributed and witnessed the shaving ceremony

Ironically many of them wanted to have a feel of my bald head

My donation card – thank you to those who contributed. Every donation counts 🙂

Dato Rahman also donated for the cause.. Awesome!!

And so did Jake Ten.. thanks dude 😀

For more info, you can call 821 9221.

This is my daily dosage that I’ve taken for almost 3 months now and I feel superb as of late

The only concern for me is the size of the pill of Zell-V.. I still haven’t mastered the swallowing part *lol*

So I normally experiment with different types of food to help me swallow the gigantic pill. This biscuit cracker failed on me.

Now this won’t be good idea to drink along with.. Otherwise I might be super double charged by the end of the day. Then again, any liquid form has proven useless to help me swallow the pill

This is still the best choice to date to help me swallow Zell-V pills. The banana has never failed me once 😀

Zell-V has somehow increased my endurance and stamina especially during my afternoon jogs. I noticed how I was more motivated to increase my jogging distance.. Awesome!!1

Who knows one day once I get super charged up from Zell-V, I might apply for a role in the WWE as The Rock wannabe *lol*

Limited edition t-shirts awesome responses

Designed by @kurapak, the t-shirt was just announced last evening and the bookings were gone within an hour

This was by initiative which I proposed to HSBC CSR team in order to create more funds for charity for the upcoming WalkRunCycle event which is happening next weekend *can’t wait* And I thought of releasing a special limited edition #walkruncycle2012 for my followers and the prints are very, very limited with a price tag of $50. All the orders were snapped up within an hour or so and I will like to thank them for the support.

Yes, I’ve heard people have been calling HSBC branches for the t-shirts but the point of contact is through me and not HSBC. Since the responses have been good, there will be another limited edition design which will be unveiled soon (hopefully this weekend) for those interested. The design won’t be the same as the one above but there will be an element of glow-in-the-dark if I’m not mistaken.

So do stay tune to my updates through my blog, instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Thank you to all those who contributed for the limited edition t-shirts. With 10,000 people participating, it is quite an honour to have you guys as one of the few :))

An ironic situation

Minister of Development attended the 13th Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC) Meeting on Transboundary Haze Pollution. Image courtesy of The Brunei Times.

I’m never a big fan of open burning because of its implication and the negative impacts they have on our environment. I read yesterday’s paper where it talked about more stringent enforcement (punishment) on “big companies” that conduct open burnings during the Second Ministerial Steering Committee (MSC) Forum on Transboundary Haze (click here).

I guess the awareness is very weak here in Brunei and there’s not much publicity that has been done to get into the mindset of the public. Yes, I’m aware of JASTRE’s involvement (from the Ministry of Development) in this issue of open buring. I remember reading their brochures too a few years ago but this is something that needs to be educated from time to time.

Why I’m saying this is because it is still happening in Brunei. I posted a picture on my instagram, Facebook and Twitter of an open burning scene and this was taken on Monday late afternoon. The ironic part was that the burning took place in the compound of a Police station home quarters. So i guess we shouldn’t also be wary of big companies but also the government agencies too as shown in this picture. Well, I don’t know if Royal Brunei Police Force fall in the category of government agencies but you get the picture.

So I hope action can be taken on this issue as this is not a good example to be shown to the public that “open burning” is a no-no. Let’s hope I don’t get to trouble for this post *haha* but then again, I’m doing this for a good cause as a citizen. So you guys want a haze free environment? Do more enforcement before this becomes a norm.

This was taken inside the compound one of the Police home quarters last Monday. Open Burning is still happening in Brunei and also at government own places

The Push-up ice-cream…..

Remember this classic Push-Up ice-cream where you can play top spin after you finish eating it. Image taken from Google images.

Aren’t we all craving for this ice-cream? Back then, it wasn’t such a phenomena because it was considered a norm thing to consume Push-up ice-creams in schools. I’m pretty sure… back in the 80s …. that other schools also sold this particular ice-cream and Mr. Softy wasn’t even around then.

I remember growing up and enjoying Push-Ups during my St. Andrew’s era and this came to mind when I saw someone posted the ice-cream picture on her Facebook. Ahhhh.. it does bring back the good old memories and I happened to share it on instagram, Facebook and Twitter. The responses I had on the post created many responses from my followers.

So it does tell me from the responses that many of us have tried the Push-Up and fell in love with it. People were asking where I could find the ice-cream but I just have to keep telling them that the image was taken from Google *lol* I’m not sure what actually happened to why it stopped selling in the Sultanate.

But if someone knows of its existence, do share with us.. But it’s a very slim chance or perhaps the brand has discontinued the said ice-cream. The Push-Up is definitely a definition of “awesomeness”.

Wanna get your iPhone fixed?

I never knew that there’s a growing number of freelancers that handles and repairs iPhones, iPod Touch and iPads too. And one of them is my friend @cibui on Instagram and he’s been getting many inquiries right after my posting on instagram, Facebook and Twitter (ah, the power of social media).

Yes, it’s a common problem that these Apple devices can up being faulty on some of its function. The most notable is the “home” button where some of them became less responsive over time. So my friend came to the rescue as one of my friends’ iPhone needed attention and @cibui did on the spot and it took a merely half an hour. The cost of the repair including the parts is very competitive. So don’t even bother ask for a discount as it’s worth the money.

Some local vendors may be charging way more expensive and some places maybe even 3 to 4 x fold but of course, you are paying for the extra service and it’s a proper service centre and perhaps there are more perks and benefits that I may not be aware of. But for a reasonable price and also my trust on my buddy, he totally delivered and my friend was all smiles after her “home” button was being fixed.

If you wanna contact him, you can call 872 0848. Oh yeah, he has new born baby recently so he can be pretty tied up but it’s no harm asking him if he’s free to help you. Congratulations on the new born baby.

@cibui’s iPhone kit for repairing iPhones

Back in January, I cracked my screen and spent over $200 on the repair at one of the shops at The Mall. My friend charges less than $200 for this.
