Brazil pass the 1st test

Now.. something just doesn’t add up here. I was disappointed with their performance yesterday and furthermore, the audio was pretty bad. I still prefer Shakira’s song or even Ricky Martin’s. The opening ceremony didn’t raise any goosebumps for me. A bit of a letdown.

I kinda like these costumes at least during the opening ceremony

Finally after four years, the World Cup is back!! But am I hyped up as before? Hmmmm hard to say but apparently not that fired up. I didn’t even know that the opening ceremony was last night until 8 hours before the opening ceremony, thinking it will fall today. Anyway, what are my thoughts of the opening ceremony? Not really much to shout about but the costumes were interesting enough and it was good to see children and kids participating. Other than that, it’s kinda disappointing really.

Few of my friends from Brunei were there for the opening ceremony and the first match of the World Cup 2014 between host Brazil and Croatia. Awesome!!! One of my bucket lists was to actually travel across the world to catch a World Cup match one day. That day will come but not Brazil. So a probable chance in Russia in 2018 or Qatar 2022 that I would travel there. My friends will be flying off to another destination to catch Uruguay vs Costa Rica and if I’m not mistaken, they will be catching a total of 5 to 6 matches in Brazil. Oh man, I’m so jealous 🙁

We  just recently started a podcast on World Cup news called the Dugout Treble and there will be more episodes coming soon. I have also create a McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy League. You can join my league by clicking here. Good luck!!!

Annual blood donation

Green bankers rolled up their sleeves yesterday to contribute to an important cause: blood donation. The event, hosted every year, was held at the Learning & Development Centre at Baiduri Bank Head Office.

This year’s blood donation drive was organized with the theme “Everyone has a Type” aimed to help replenish the low blood supplies faced by the National Blood Bank at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

Senior Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Human Resources and Finance Division and member of the Baiduri Bank Management Committee, Ms Veronica Chong, said that blood donating is a good practice, and she has been doing it every year during the drive.

“There is an overall feeling of goodness and satisfaction when donating blood,” she said. “A lot of people are fearful of donating blood because of the needle but it’s not painful, and donating only one pint of blood can save up to three lives.”

“One advice I have for them is to stay relaxed. If you are scared of needles, look away, or better yet, talk with your colleagues, I’m sure they’ll also appreciate the distraction.”

The event was organised as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It is an annual event held to aid patients in need of specific types of blood urgently.

The Baiduri Bank Group is also an active supporter and major sponsor of the annual World Blood Donor Day.

Baiduri Bank Group has also just wrapped up their yearly charity golf event, The Baiduri Masters – an initiative that regularly provides financial support for child development programmes in Brunei such as Pusat Ehsan, Child Development Centre (CDC), SMARTER and the Learning Ladders Society. The Green Apeel

Sometimes it’s great to know how the power of social media when use appropriately and effectively, it can create the right buzz with some impact. Yesterday was a great example when a group of people involved in a community project organised a recycling campaign under the flagship of The Green Apeel.

The purpose of their project is to create awareness among the community on recycling and at the same time, they were also raising funds for YASKA (Yayasan Kanser Kanak-Kanak). I love the idea of them decorating some of the recycling bins to steal the attention of the community and educate them at the same time about recycling.

Yesterday they had a campaign drive for the public to bring in their recyclable goods so The Green Apeel can deliver these items for recycling and in exchange, they will raise some funds as the recycling monies will be donated to YASKA. There was quite a response as the group involved made use of social media to spread awareness and it paid off.

There was also an artistic impression on their Instagram posts (do check out @thegreenapeel and their hashtag #thegreenapeel) which made it trendy and catching the eyes of the social media users. This was a brilliant way of drawing the attention and most importantly, educating the users on means of recycling and its benefits.

The group would like to thank all the supporters for the event and the recycle bins will be out there until the 25th May at Times Square Shopping Centre and Yayasan Shopping Complex.

Below are images taken from @thegreenapeel instagram.

Audi A3 launched

Muscular, elegant and confident: these are some of the words that can describe the much anticipated Audi A3 Sedan.

The crowd cheered as the coupe-like sedan was finally unveiled during the official launching ceremony of the A3 Sedan held at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall, the Empire Hotel & Country Club on Saturday.

Among those present during the night were TCY Group of Companies Chairman Teng Ching Ying, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany Helmut Domas and customers and guests of TCY Motors.

“The new A3 Sedan is completely redesigned and shares not a single body panel with its sister models, the three-door A3 and five-door Sportback. It is a sedan instead of a wagon unlike its predecessor,” said Dave Sivanantham, TCY Motors general manager.

He further shared that the premium compact sporty sedan offers the latest in progressive technology, such as Audi’s Ultra Lightweight technology, which allegedly has made the new A3 Sedan lighter than its nearest competitor by over 60 kilogrammes and faster with 24hp more output.

He further stated that the A3 Sedan was recently declared the World Car of the Year 2014 by automotive journalists from 22 countries.

“Now, after much anticipation the all-new A3 Sedan is introduced to the Sultanate and is offered at a competitive price of $53,900 without compromising on luxury, design or performance,” said the general manager.

Loving the Audi A3

The new Audi A3 – World Car of the Year 2014

Now you can drive a premium car at an affordable price. That’s what I love about Audi cars. Whenever there’s a launch, it creates a buzz among the community. My IG post on the recent Audi A3 Sedan caught attention and even the during the sneak launch, one of the Audi A3 was being booked.

So what’s so special about the new Audi A3 Sedan? Well, it’s lighter and faster. It uses a new Audi Ultra lightweight technology and it’s faster (0-100 km/h) by 1.2 seconds to its closest competitor. Like John Tan, the Marketing Manager of Audi Brunei (T.C.Y. Motors Sdn Bhd), that just improvement on the speed makes a difference between a champion and a runner-up. True indeed!!

Car weight is just 1,370 kilo which is considered light and as I’ve mentioned before it’s due to the Audi Ultra lightweight construction. This is considered a great benchmark figure for its class.

As usual, Audi will offer headlights in xenon plus technology, including LED daytime running lights including the tail lights.

Its engine has a 1.8 TFSI turbo petrol engine outputting 132 kW (180 hp). Other highlights are the five-mode Auto Drive Select which includes an efficiency (helps improve consumption values) and individual mode.

The interior has a much better upgrade than its predecessors and it boasts ground-breaking quality of the materials and workmanship. Once you enter the Audi A3, you will get a different feel kinda environment and you will be impressed.

I was also impressed with the safety features of the Audi A3 especially the braking systems when there is a collision. It also earned “The Top Safety Pick +” Award. If the collision is inevitable, the brake assist uses controlled braking maneuvers during the accident to prevent secondary collisions. This can help to prevent the car from skidding and thus additional collisions.

Last Friday, there was a sneak launch preview for invited Audi customers and it was unveiled by Audi Brunei Managing Director Teng Chee Khiong and General Manager and Acting Sales Manager of Audi Brunei, Sridheevan Sivanantham.

As I posted earlier in my post, Audi A3 was being named 2014 World Car of the Year. The A3 was voted as the winner by an international jury panel comprising 69 top‑level automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world. With this win for the Audi A3, Audi has maintained its position as the manufacturer with the most World Car of the Year titles. The brand with the four rings has previously won three World Performance Car titles, two World Car Design of the Year titles and the inaugural World Car of the Year title. In total Audi has won seven titles at the World Car of the Year Awards:

2005 Audi A6 World Car of the Year
2007 Audi RS 4 World Performance Car, Audi TT World Car Design of the Year
2008 Audi R8 World Performance Car, Audi R8 World Car Design of the Year
2010 Audi R8 V10 World Performance Car

For more info, you can visit their showroom at T.C.Y. showroom at Kiarong or call 244 2333 for more info. Do check out some of the youtube videos of the Audi A3. The actual launch of the Audi A3 will be something in May if I’m not mistaken.

DPMM FC focus on next match

Roy O’Donovan was injured in the last game but kept on playing against Tampines Rovers. He had a minor surgery on his left thumb ligament and now sporting a cast. However, he still insists to play against Geylang International FC this Friday.

Steve Kean’s press conference with the media last Sunday

One on one with Steve Kean and his views of last game against Tampines Rovers where DPMM FC lost 2-1.

On DPMM FC’s performance: “The performance was there and we were trying to win the game. It wasn’t easy to stay at 1-1. We brought Param (Azwan Salleh) who can put a cross in. Sairol was getting very tired and he cramped his calf. So we brought in Adi who is another forward thinking player. I was disappointed with the second goal because when the ball was in the middle of the pitch, we have to get more pressure on the ball because obviously they are gonna shoot and get something on target. That was a disappointing factor.”

On the positive side: “On the positive side, we created enough chances to win. We just have to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

“If we hit the post and not score, this will give the other team a hope that they are still in the game and I think that’s what happen. We just had to get that second goal after conceding the goal in the manner we did.”

On Azwan Ali’s performance: “He prefers that position (attacking mid) that being wide. The defenders didn’t know where he was going and he kept going into the pockets and he can turn and he can dribble. Sometimes he was unlucky but he is an exciting player and he makes things happens whenever on the ball.

On the performance of the referee: “I don’t like to criticize referees. I think it’s the hardest job and I don’t who wants to be a referee. Because we just hope over the course of the season, we can get most of the decisions our way and some are gonna go against you.”

DPMM FC will fly to Singapore tomorrow for their match against Geylang International FC at Bedok Stadium. The match will be played on Friday 28th March. Good luck!!

Financial planning

for IGS students

In a continuing effort to increase financial planning awareness among students in Brunei Darussalam, a team of managers from Baiduri Bank today visited the Kolej IGS in the capital where they presented a talk to some 200 students of the college. The talk emphasized the importance of financial planning to achieve financial success in life and outlined how students can benefit from suitable banking products such as the “4U” Value Pack which was specifically designed with students needs in mind.

Alice Lee, Branch Manager of Baiduri Kiulap Branch gave the welcome remarks followed by a talk on basic financial planning by Siti Aminah, Bancassurance Manager at Baiduri’s Wealth Management Centre. She gave tips on the choices students have today to save money. “Young people should be aware of their financial choices when it comes to planning for their future. This will ease them in their undertakings should they choose to study locally or abroad.”

Members of Baiduri Bank with the participants of the talk at IGS

This was then followed by a talk on the “4U Value Pack” Student Account by Shannon Sikun, Branch Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Muara Branch. Available to students aged between 12 and 29 years old, the package is designed to meet the needs of students studying in Brunei or overseas. At the end of the talk, Pg Hajah Fatimah Binti Pg Setia Jaya Pg Hj Momin, CEO of Kolej IGS presented the Baiduri Bank team with a token of appreciation. “The talk definitely gave an insight to what Baiduri has to offer and our students are thrilled to know that there are programmes that will take care of them while they are pursuing their education.”

Divergent review

Divergent. I won’t share much too much but you are more than welcome to listen to our podcast (see soundcloud below) and see what you think. The biggest disappointment for me is the delivery of the movie as we are in the era of “Young Adult” adaptations with the likes of Twilight (glad that was over) and The Hunger Games (much better). Yes, we do have huge flops like The Host, The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures. However, Divergent have avoided the bombshell pit as it raked in almost US 60 million in the opening weekend.

Anyway, back to the delivery part. Well, the biggest flaw here is the pacing and film editing. It was totally disjointed and there wasn’t a moment I feel any anti-climax or climax for that matter. The other problem is when you already identify the problem, then you will have to endure the next 2 and a half hours of restlessness. The lead roles by Shailene Woodley and Theo James couldn’t bring the movie to better heights. The direction by Neil Burger (Illusionist) didn’t do justice to the best selling novel. I’m hoping for a redeeming sequel since it performed well in the box office but let’s hope these mistakes are being listened to and more improvements in the sequel.

You can check out my popcorn panel’s co-host blog post on Divergent and of course, you can listen to our podcast. Happy listening. Verdict: 5/10 Rottentomatoes 40%

Listen to our podcast review of Divergent and stand a chance to win PS4 console when I post the quiz on IG later on
