Representing the team from Brunei from Sungai Tali Primary School and Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School with their coaches and Satinah binti Hj Abang, Student Officer of Science Technology and Environment Partnership (STEP) Centre.
After entering the competition for the sixth time, Brunei finally made it to the Top 10 of the Open Category for Secondary Level. That team is a group of students from Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School with their team project “Robotlifter”.
Though Brunei went back empty handed, the spirit of the students were not dampened. They really had a great time and all of them didn’t expect to fly all the way to Russia to represent Brunei in the World Robot Olympiad in Sochi, Russia. They braved the cold (of Russia), the jet lag from flying and they did the best they could do with the resources given.
Brunei definitely has potential to break into the Top 3 with more competition and exposure such as participation in WRO. The next event will be hosted in Qatar in 2015 and funnily enough, they didn’t announce the following host for the year 2016.
Brunei’s participation in Qatar 2015 looks promising and I do hope this can spur more schools and students to join the Brunei Robotics Olympiad next year and you can stand a chance to represent your school in Qatar WRO 2015. The idea here is not just to represent Brunei but learn and gain more exposure and with this repeating behaviour, everything will come naturally for Bruneians and a bigger chance to break the Top 3 benchmark.
When I saw the students from Brunei did their presentation and Q&A sessions, I believe we can actually go pretty far with more resources and proper training. I salute the kids for their courage and able to speak to the public while showcasing their project.
It was also my first time experiencing how WRO was bring run and this event was no easy feat. The organisers had mixed feedback with regards to the handling issues and our LO for the Brunei team kept on changing and their English wasn’t that bad.
Hence, it made me realised how much effort the Brunei Embassy to the Russian Federation they offered to the Brunei delegate so everything would be smooth sailing. On behalf of the Brunei delegates, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Brunei Embassy especially His Excellency Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Russian Federation, for continuously giving us support in terms of logistics and hospitality. It was also nice of him to drop the Olympic Park every day to give moral support to the kids at their booths.
A big thank you also to the Hanafi, Pg Madihi and Natalia for helping us during our stay in Moscow and especially Sochi in the past few days. It really made our trip less of a burden and I truly appreciate the kindness and dedication from the Brunei Embassy there. Thumbs up!!
As for the students, don’t be disappointed by the result and I’m very proud that all of you made it to Russia and gave your best against 49 countries. I’m pretty sure the Ministry of Education will be pleased with Brunei’s effort for making it to the Top 10 in WRO’s history. I also hope that sponsors will come along as well to help potential students for next year’s WRO in Qatar 2015.
His Excellency Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Russian Federation watching the Regular competition at the World Robot Olympiad 2014 in Sochi, Russia. Thank you so much for your support and the hospitality to the Brunei delegates.
The students also managed to get their jacket signed by the Russian volunteers. All of them wore orange sweaters uniform.

Let’s help Azeemah who will be trekking at Mount Snowdon to raise funds for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal. It’s good to know that she has reached her target and the event is tomorrow. Saturday 15th November. You can still donate for the good cause and good luck, Azeemah :))
A message from Azeemah’s fundraiser page: I, Azeemah Natasha Hj Mohd Khairul Zaki from Brunei Darussalam, will be trekking Mt. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales for the purpose of a charity hike organised by University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle. However, to make this possible, I need to raise at least 150 pounds.
Inside the war-torn country, an estimated 3.2 million children have been forced from their homes. Another 1.5 million children have fled the country and are now living in over-stretched refugee camps or villages. The most vulnerable children are those who remain inside Syria, who risk death, illness, abuse and exploitation on a daily basis. The humanitarian needs are incalculable, thus we need your help to raise money and awareness for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal.
Thank you for your time and generosity! May God bless you. End.

Speakers: Reuben Chin, Pat Lee, Shinny Chia, Fitri Ali, Huifong Ng, Florina Tan, Delwin Keasberry and little Aman Izad-Ryan
The title says it all. This is a world wide event where it is known as PechaKucha and all the presenters have to do is a simple presentation with 20 images, each for 20 seconds while they talk about each of the images. They won’t have control of the flow of the images and you will just have to talk along to the images. All in all, the presentation is supposed to last exactly 6 minutes 40 seconds.
Brunei made history last Saturday when they organised their first PechaKucha which was held at TruSynergy office at Telanai. The responses were quite overwhelming and I’m impressed with the organisers for making this event possible. I’m a regular member of toastmasters and this is kinda similar but with imagery and of course, using your presentation skills with nice pacing.
There were 8 speakers last weekend to showcase their presentations and I was quite entertained because of the variety of knowledge that I learnt from their presentation. I learnt about how we shouldn’t trust the doctors just easily or learnt being inspired to be a traveller and the list could just go on.
I’m looking forward for the next PechaKucha and I’m eyeing myself to present one by 2015. The best presenter for me that night was Huifong Ng because of her great pacing and she hardly looked at the slides which made her presentation more effective. The most charming presenter went to the youngest presenter Aman Izad-Ryan who shared her hobbies on Minecraft and online games.
This is another creative avenue for the public to showcase their experiences and of course, bring back that message that will have an impact in our lives. Thank for making this possible 😀
Such a great crowd last Saturday
I was so intrigued by Huifong Ng’s presentation. The best speaker of the night.
I learnt so much from Florina’s experience and makes me mindful and aware next time
The most charming speaker of the night – 7 year old Aman Izad-Ryan
Isn’t she such a charmer?
Fitri Ali makes me want to just take that extra step to be more adventurous
Pat Lee shared her personal journey in helping the community and I was really touched with her commitment
Delwin Keasberry @bruneitweet shared the dangers of social media
Shinny Chia’s vision of bringing more creativity to Brunei and you have my support 😀
Amazing perspective of Reuben Chin’s account with his photography
Huwaida Ishaaq brought PechaKucha to Brunei and I am thankful towards her and the volunteers that made it all possible. The team behind deserves much appreciation as well.

What are the chances of having two separate fire incidents happening in a space of two days? This happened two days ago at RIPAS hospital when a fire broke out at the Cardiology Centre and the fire caused damages to 12 treatment rooms. Fortunately there were no report of injuries or casualties so that’s a huge relief for everyone. A big kudos to the Fire and Rescue Department for bringing the fire under control within half an hour before it could get out of hand.
According to the press statement from The Brunei Times, The Ministry of Health said the fire did not affect the Specialist Block and all in-patient or ward services at the hospital, which opened in 1984.
I was aware of the incident as it was spreading on social media especially on Whatsapp. Yes, news in Brunei is pretty viral right now and the headline pictures that were used on The Brunei Times and Borneo Bulletin were identical and taken from Whatsapp.
Present during the examination of the site was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman, in his capacity as the Acting Minister of Health.
We are still unsure what sparked the fire at the Cardiology Centre but let’s hope the investigation will sort out that matter. What is important is that no one was hurt during the incident.

US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Daniel Shields, (4th from the left) with Elías Díaz Sesé, the President of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd (4th from the left) and Director of Transport under the Ministry of Communications Hjh Airah Hj Abdullah (3rd from the right) at the Burger King outlet at Brunei International Airport
It took BURGER KING® a decade or so to enter the Brunei market. Rumours kept on escalating on when will BURGER KING® come to the Sultanate and I know of a few mutual friends who have shown interest in bringing the U.S franchise to Brunei because of its ever growing popularity. Fast forward to 2014, now Brunei has two outlets in a space of seven months with the third on the way in the Belait District. This is made possible by Sinofood Express with the guidance and support of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd.
Elías Díaz Sesé, the President of BK AsiaPac Pte. Ltd, was present during the official launch and he was impressed with Brunei’s business growth, considering it’s still new in the market and he ranked Brunei Darussalam as one of the most successful market entrants in the region. He shared that it was not easy to choose the right partner and with the different approach by BURGER KING® in the past years, this vision opened doors for the Brunei market and I’m happy that BURGER KING® will be having its third outlet by end of the year.
The second outlet is located at the arrival hall of the Brunei International Airport. The first outlet is located at the heart of town at Wisma Raya, Jalan Sultan. Its competitor have yet to make an impact in terms of presence as it still relies on one outlet for the past two decades.
Sesé revealed that they haven’t been doing a great job in BURGER KING® Asia Pacific the past few years. In 2012, BK restructured their system with a different direction – ownership growth mentality. That approach seemed to pay off and it made the entry to Brunei market more possible as the BURGER KING® Asia Pacific was looking new markets and Brunei was identified as one. Sesé enjoys a good business relationship with Nelky Goh and Pg Hashim, the directors of Sinofood Express, which brought the BURGER KING® brand to Brunei.
US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam, Daniel Shields, also shared the same sentiments and he was happy to know more American brands are making an impact in the Brunei economy and this also strengthening the relationship ties and trade between Brunei Darussalam and USA. The other point Shields shared was the job opportunity it can create for the Brunei economy. Shields’ favourite is the WHOPPER® when asked.
The second outlet’s opening also saw an introduction of their new item in the menu – Rock It Fries and it’s only a promotional item (for a limited time only). The new product is a playful take on the regular French Fries where customers mix in Burger King’s Spicy Honey and Piquante Spice to their fries and shake it up to get an explosion of flavours when they take the first bite. The order will come with Burger King’s signature Rock It dome-cup to make the experience more unique.
For more updates, you can follow their instagram @burgerkingbrunei or Facebook page www.facebook.com/bkbrunei

Now.. something just doesn’t add up here. I was disappointed with their performance yesterday and furthermore, the audio was pretty bad. I still prefer Shakira’s song or even Ricky Martin’s. The opening ceremony didn’t raise any goosebumps for me. A bit of a letdown.
I kinda like these costumes at least during the opening ceremony
Finally after four years, the World Cup is back!! But am I hyped up as before? Hmmmm hard to say but apparently not that fired up. I didn’t even know that the opening ceremony was last night until 8 hours before the opening ceremony, thinking it will fall today. Anyway, what are my thoughts of the opening ceremony? Not really much to shout about but the costumes were interesting enough and it was good to see children and kids participating. Other than that, it’s kinda disappointing really.
Few of my friends from Brunei were there for the opening ceremony and the first match of the World Cup 2014 between host Brazil and Croatia. Awesome!!! One of my bucket lists was to actually travel across the world to catch a World Cup match one day. That day will come but not Brazil. So a probable chance in Russia in 2018 or Qatar 2022 that I would travel there. My friends will be flying off to another destination to catch Uruguay vs Costa Rica and if I’m not mistaken, they will be catching a total of 5 to 6 matches in Brazil. Oh man, I’m so jealous 🙁
We just recently started a podcast on World Cup news called the Dugout Treble and there will be more episodes coming soon. I have also create a McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy League. You can join my league by clicking here. Good luck!!!

Green bankers rolled up their sleeves yesterday to contribute to an important cause: blood donation. The event, hosted every year, was held at the Learning & Development Centre at Baiduri Bank Head Office.
This year’s blood donation drive was organized with the theme “Everyone has a Type” aimed to help replenish the low blood supplies faced by the National Blood Bank at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.
Senior Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Human Resources and Finance Division and member of the Baiduri Bank Management Committee, Ms Veronica Chong, said that blood donating is a good practice, and she has been doing it every year during the drive.
“There is an overall feeling of goodness and satisfaction when donating blood,” she said. “A lot of people are fearful of donating blood because of the needle but it’s not painful, and donating only one pint of blood can save up to three lives.”
“One advice I have for them is to stay relaxed. If you are scared of needles, look away, or better yet, talk with your colleagues, I’m sure they’ll also appreciate the distraction.”
The event was organised as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It is an annual event held to aid patients in need of specific types of blood urgently.
The Baiduri Bank Group is also an active supporter and major sponsor of the annual World Blood Donor Day.
Baiduri Bank Group has also just wrapped up their yearly charity golf event, The Baiduri Masters – an initiative that regularly provides financial support for child development programmes in Brunei such as Pusat Ehsan, Child Development Centre (CDC), SMARTER and the Learning Ladders Society. The book launching began with the recitation of Al-Fatihah, and was proceeded with a reading of a short excerpt from the novel by the author himself, and a question and answer session.
According to Amir Falique, the book took about 9 months to complete. The sci-fi novel was inspired by his viewing influences at the time, a lot of science fiction, like Star Wars and Futurama.
Amir also collaborated with a local Bruneian artist, Zakaria Omar to illustrate the inside page. “The Forlorn Adventure” is currently being translated to Malay and in the process of being published locally by Dewan Bahasa. According to the author, he already has plans of writing a second novel, a prequel that would not be based in the science fiction genre.
Copies can be obtained through “The Forlorn Adventure” Facebook Fanpage or at www.amirfalique.com or you can go to TT Blues Cafe to get a copy.

Now this is a first – Japan winning the Thomas Cup. It’s one of the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world. Previously it was dominated by China who were the defending champions for 5 tournaments in a row. Malaysia’s last stint was back in 1992 when they beat Indonesia and the last time Malaysia reached the finals of the Thomas Cup was back in 2002.
I was actually hoping for Malaysia to win as I have a soft spot for the Malaysians after Dato Chong Wei’s failure to win the Olympics Gold in singles. However, it is also good to see a new breed such as Japan winning the Thomas Cup. They deserved it after beating the likes of China 3-0 in the semi-finals. The finals between Japan and Malaysia was also nail biting to the end as Daren Liew of Malaysia was pushed to the limits by World Number 25 Takuma Ueda.
Congratulations Japan on the new milestone.

Last night, a commotion took place at The Mall at the ground floor. According to a witness, the man was running around and even pushed one of the person who was on duty, setting up a booth at the atrium area of The Mall. The guy was eventually taken into the custody of the police and escorted outside the building which I saw right after our Godzilla movie outing. Pierre Imhof, CEO of Baiduri Bank and Mr. Ti Eng Hui, Deputy CEO with members of the media. Taken from BT website.
An event I miss due to my DPMM FC coverage commitment. So here is the text taken from BT. Melodious songs from the 50s rang through the Mutiara ballroom of the Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam as Baiduri Bank Group celebrated its prestigious award-winning achievements with members of the local media yesterday.
Over 150 guests from various media agencies in the Sultanate as well as personnel from various government sectors such as Information Department and designing companies further vivified the dinner.
Attendees were treated to an evening of food, fun and exciting games such as sausage-eating, sundae-making, song-guessing, ball-shooting and best dress awards for both males and females.
For the lucky draw round, Fayezuana, a radio presenter from Kristal FM (KFM) bagged herself a Baiduri saving account with $2000 along with three others who brought home two iPad Minis as well as a Polaroid camera.
The rest of the guests did not go back home empty-handed as they receive instant dips.
Present during the dinner was Pierre Imhof, general manager of Baiduri Bank Group who delivered a welcoming remark thanking the local print media and television in Brunei Darussalam for their vital roles in disseminating information about their products and services to the public. “On behalf of Baiduri Bank Group, I would like to acknowledge you, the media, as a very important part of society, and as our partner in disseminating information about us to the public via your various channels,” he added. Also present at the event were Ti Eng Hui, deputy chief executive officer, as well as Dorothy Newn, head of Corporate Communication and Marketing. Text by Ikhwan Salleh of The Brunei Times.

One friend that I know of that doesn’t stop creating or recreating new ideas to reality is Keeran Janin. Our friendship goes all the way back to the era of the RA6 (a disbanded clique) in the mid 2000’s where he was under the employment of b-mobile communications.
If I look back at all the things he has done up to this very moment, I’m just truly amazed of the array of things that he was able to pull off even though some didn’t turn out be successful. He is a great iconic technoprenuer (IT entrepreneur) for the young ones as some of us don’t really like to deal with failure.
In my recent interview with Keeran Janin, he shared some of his successes and failures in his IT adventure including his recent trip to the Silicon Valley where Keeran stayed there for three weeks to meet up with the technopreneurs and angel investors.
I could tell that Keeran was high in energy during the interview and there was so much that he wanted to share on his US trip where he self-funded himself and took that leap of faith and just go all out to meet different walks of life at the Silicon Valley. Honestly, I love the vibrancy of the Silicon Valley and both Keeran and I traveled there once back in 2008 and it was a memorable one for us. This time, Keeran meant business and he is ready to swim with the big fish.
Three weeks in the US is not a cheap feat and Keeran was smart enough to use most of his resources such as air miles (for a subsidized flight) and cheaper means of accommodation so he could make most out of his Silicon Valley trip.
Keeran Janin on one of his tour during visit at San Francisco recently
Keeran Janin and his friend at Lombard Street
Now the question is why did he travel there again for such a longer period? Maybe, just maybe, Keeran kinda felt that he hit the jackpot with his new creation called Chrends (or #chrends) which actually means Chatrooms for trending topics. The IOS app was developed earlier this year under his new company Chrends Sdn Bhd and it is still in its beta platform but it has been garnering pace in terms of subscribers. So he felt it is time to meet the big shots in the US and see what road lies ahead of him.
If you remember the days of mIRC, #Chrends kinda falls in that category but in an app version with a sleek and modern feel to it. Basically you can create rooms or channels and chat with others anonymously without the need to sign up with your profiles. I’ve been using it for a month now and I follow the ongoing conversations on the main channel where people share their thoughts on local issues and so forth.
So Keeran’s trip in the US was to pitch his prototype (#chrends) idea to potential investors and angel investors. He traveled from one spot to another and ended up pitching to at least 30-40 investors. I kinda know how it works in the US. It’s totally different than Asia. Sometimes you could sell your idea in just matter of a minute or two and kabooom, you land yourself a jackpot and the investor will pump in money to fund your idea. In the US, things are much faster when it comes to decision making and sometimes the verbal agreements are on the spot before they get down to the formalities. Hence, it’s no surprise to why Keeran was taking a huge risk in his pitching adventure.
He was a bit tight-lipped about the outcome of his pitches but he hinted that he will reveal all pretty soon. But he did request for one thing is for us to download the #chrends app and do give feedback as that’s the most important ingredient for his app to tract more usage from subscribers.
Whether his trip was a success or not, the message here is that in life, everything is worth a shot. The experience itself will be self rewarding to say the least.
