EasyWay with the guest of honour and members of the Brunei Basketball Association
The prize giving ceremony
Easy won the hard way. What an intense final!!! I missed the commotion where a few players were ejected. I came right after half time of the finals between defending champions Fu Zhou and favourites EasyWay. Mike Pilgrim of EasyWay was ejected out for landing a punch on Narcisco Llagas (also ejected) and it led into a mini brawl where another official from Fu Zhou (Erwin) was also ejected after his punching efforts on EasyWay’s Ah Giap face.
There has been a huge question mark on the match officials in controlling the match and this also boils down to the Brunei Basketball Association. The standards of the officials and the discipline still needs some fine tuning. Yes, there will be reasons for having low budgets to provide appropriate training from the officials. I still find it ironic that some teams are able to fork out loads of monies to lure in import players but some are closely related to the BBA and having good relations, they would see this as an important growth for the country for the sports of basketball. You will see tons of banners here and there and corporate companies fork out monies to be part of an event. I seriously am not sure how the BBA works in Brunei but judging from the commotion last Wednesday, it gives the association a bad after taste. Something must be done to stop this from repeating.
The guest of honour was the Acting District Officer of Brunei-Muara and it was such a shame that he had to witness it. Players will take action (and play vigilante) if referees fail to make obvious foul calls and that’s where things can get really, really ugly. BBA members, officials, referees and even the policemen will turn peacemakers when things get out of hand just like last Wednesday. There were even signs of provocation from other teams to incite more heat and I thought that was unnecessary and unprofessional.
Even the venue at the Batu Bersurat Basketball Court is not ideal to hold such a large number of crowd. The players don’t have any allowance outside the boundary of their court zone and bystanders can turn into human cushions to stop the momentum. I mean, I was excited for the huge turn out but feel conflicted due to the safety of the people inside the basketball court. I believe the human count exceeded more than 200% and sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry.
The memento for the guest of honour from BBA
There was a delay during the third quarter due to a brawl
Mike Pilgrim with his fans
Just look at the Batu Bersurat Basketball Court
Wow, I can’t believe I’m ranting on all these instead of posting how cool the match was. Anyway, let’s talk about the match itself. Yes, it was absolutely thrilling and it was end to end stuff. EasyWay was on top form and even star player Geve Leones wasn’t featured due to a sprained ankle. But EasyWay had the depth in squad. They have the likes of three impressive imports – Charlie Bolias, Robert Hite and Mike Pilgrim and not forgetting Elvin Requintin. The local players are also made up of competitive players (captain Ben Sim, Md Zainul, Yap Chun Ping, Choo Yung Jian and Jamri Ramlee. Now that’s what you call #strengthinnumbers
Defending champions Fu Zhou put up a great fight but only came close when they stole the lead in the third quarter. It didn’t last long as they suffered from the ejection of their key players. With three minutes remaining, EasyWay increased the gap and deservedly had the victory over their opponents in 89-77. EasyWay became the only team to be undefeated in the tournament.
Mike Pilgrim did wrote an apology on his Facebook Wall, “Last night was a great experience to win a Championship with a Class A organisation but I would not be correct if I didn’t take the time to apologize for the part I played in the brawl last night. As we all know there was a lot of dirty playing taking place last night and I have been more than patient with the referees and the teams as well, but I don’t blame them for my actions of retaliation to the dirty play. So to all of you especially the kids in attendance, I sincerely apologize for my actions and no matter how annoyed or frustrated I should have never let it take me out of my game or my character, so the Fu Zhou players and fans, I sincerely apologize.”
The same went for Erwin Velez who wrote on the Brunei Basketball Facebook Page, “Congratulation to Easyway for winning championship 2015 Sultan Cup, you guys deserved it, you guys put in a lot of dedication. What happened last night was much regretted, we don’t take it personally, we hope you guys don’t too. Just like your team, we are very passionate about basketball, for me personally eventhough I was not able to play this year, I still flew back to support my team in the finals. Sometimes, in the heat of our passion, we do things beyond our control which we regret later on and last night was one of those moments. My sincere apology to you guys, Specially Boss Ah Giap, I’m sorry It was a random swing and unfortunately I hit Boss Ah Giap. I hope that I can talk to you personally to apologies on my action. To Coach K and Wira Pori my sincere apologies on this matter. To Easyway family and friends my sincere apologies. Sincerely yours, Erwin Velez.”
The schedules for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Regional Festival of Football 2015
His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, the President of National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) with AFC Festival Manager Dr Shamil Kamil Mohammad
For the development of football. This is such a great idea that Brunei Darussalam is hosting the ongoing Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Regional Festival of Football 2015. This is the first time that Brunei is also hosting an AFC event of this magnitude. For the country, this is a great milestone as this gives confident that Brunei Darussalam is confident in running this non-competitive event for the development of football for the youngsters locally and internationally.
The launch of the event took place last Tuesday and the football festival was officiated by His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, the President of National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD). Also present was AFC Festival Manager Dr Shamil Kamil Mohammad who shared a welcoming remark and praised Brunei Darussalam for hosting the 5-day event.
The match kicked off with Brunei Darussalam the host bowing down to the improved Philippines team with a 3-0 score line. The first two goals came less than 10 minutes into the game as the host lost concentration. The visitors were very solid in midfield and bossed the pitch, making it difficult for Brunei to win possession. The Philippines sealed the deal after the break with a sublime finish as Captain Van Vincent Nico Quintana scored a curler to add to Brunei’s misery.
However, it was a much better outing for Brunei Darussalam in the second match despite going down to Myanmar 3-2 last Wednesday. This shows that Brunei is still capable to score upfront but just need more composure when it comes to defence. They have conceded six goals so far in two games.
Brunei still have hot favourites Malaysia and the rising star Timor Leste tonight and tomorrow evening respectively. Malaysia had scored 10 goals in two games and they have been very strong upfront. Despite playing earlier this morning with a 8-0 victory over Myanmar, they will have their second match tonight against Brunei Darussalam at Belapan Sports Complex. Will Brunei able to contain the attacking prowess of Malaysia?
Do refer to the poster above for the schedules and there is also lucky draw for every match. The closing ceremony will be at 9:30pm on Saturday, 22nd August at Belapan Sports Complex.

BIBD with the sponsors and corporate partners of BIBD CE-ALAF during the press conference last week
After missing out on last year’s calendar, BIBD has brought back the BIBD Charity Expedition where the main objective is to raise funds for the ALAF participants. ALAF means Advocating Life-Long Learning for an Aspiring Future and now it has been rebranded as CE-ALAF. Every year, there will find ways to collaborate with strategic partners in ensuring that it’s not just about raising funds but to synergise the strengths in enhancing the study programmes for the under privilege students until they graduate with a degree.
I totally love this idea when they introduced this a few years ago. The progress and success rate have been encouraging as well for the students selected under the CE-ALAF program. The funds raised are allocated for tuition fees and counselling services. The applicants will be screened by government agencies from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Religious Affairs and despite being given 100 students per year quota, only 50 students and 34 students met the requirements for year 2014 and year 2015 respectively. Hajah Nurul Akmar binti Haji Mohd Ja’afar, Head of BIBD Corporate Social Responsibility, did hint that the criteria will be reviewed once again with the relevant agencies and stakeholders. It was good to highlight that some of the students from the program achieved distinctions in the PSR examinations. Giving education to under privileged student is a thoughtful gesture but for them to go beyond the expectations such as passing with flying colours is an awesome bonus indeed.

That’s the gist of the background for CE-ALAF. Now it’s the actual event of the BIBD CE-ALAG event which will take place on 25th October 2015. The registration is already open and it will close on 20th September 2015.
The only one missing from the running + cycling event is the full marathon (42km). There will be a 21km, 10km and 5km competitive categories with the addition of the fun-run of 3km. Let’s not forget the cycling category as well.
You can now register at their website link – www.bibdalaf.com – and it’s also required that you present with with a donation card which can be deposited into any BIBD branch counter via Cash Deposit Machine (CDM), ATM, online banking or CE-ALAF account number 1018181811.
Let’s hope with the funds raised that it can hope to help reduce poverty, leading the country towards a more prosperous and peaceful future where Brunei is populated with educated, highly skilful individuals on par with internationally set standards.
Every donation counts for the betterment of our future leaders. Thank you, BIBD, for making noble cause a lasting one and I’m pretty sure that the Brunei Government are happy with your initiative.

Fourteen young referees from Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are taking part in the five-day programme that will conclude today.
The course aims to prepare and assess the participating referees for the festival that will be held at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports and the Berakas Sports Complex from August 18-22.
The course will be conducted by two referee instructors; Mohammad Rodzali Yacob and Michael Hanania.

Yves Grosjean, General Manager of Total E&P Borneo B.V. in green attire hosting guests at Total Hari Raya Open House
Recently Total E&P Borneo BV celebrated their Hari Raya Open House for their clients and guests. It has become an annual event as they host a corporate open house. The host was Yves Grosjean, General Manager of Total E&P Borneo B.V.
Total has been have very busy this year alone. Earlier in the year, Total has achieved 15 years in recording zero Loss Time Injury (LTI) and they have operated at least millions of man-hours in several operation sites, drilling campaigns, repair and modification operations, oil platform operations, logistical operations – including the use of helicopters – and other kinds of operation. Good job to the staff and contractors of Total.
Also recently last month, Total launched the jacket of the third platform of the Maharaja Lela Jamalulalam (MLJ-3) field. Jacket I am referring to is a steel frame fixed to the seabed, forming the support structure of an oil production platform. . The jacket was on the Muara Yard in just one year. It is 100% Brunei made and it required around 500 000 man hours of work. Great work by Petrovietnam Technical Services of Vietnam (PTSC M&C) with the assistance of Sahid, Adinin, Megalift, Teca, Velosi and Petrokon.
Keep up the great work, Total.

Muhammad Radzuan bin Hj Madali, the chairman of the AFC U-14 Football Festival 2015 in Brunei Darussalam
It has to start somewhere.. Back to basics. Even in sports. It’s good to know that NFABD the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam is working its way up to improve the development of our popular sport in Brunei – football. Things have been definitely improving and it’s never easy as 1-2-3. It’s not just about the results and performance. It’s also about the development of the sport. So I’m quite happy to know that Brunei Darussalam has been given the opportunity to host the AFC U-14 football festival for this year and next year as well.
Yesterday was the first official announcement from NFABD chaired by Muhammad Radzuan bin Hj Madali, the organising chairman for the AFC U-14 football festival. The press conference took place at NFABD House yesterday for the members of the media.
For NFABD and Brunei Darussalam, this is considered a huge opportunity as Asian Football Confederation has entrusted Brunei to host such event. This is also the first time that Brunei host such a prestigious sporting event.
According to the chairman, there will be no competition or a trophy to play for despite being drawn into two groups. The objective of the football festival is to expose the young footballers to play against another regional country and gain more experience which can help the development of football for the future.
The chairman is thankful for the media for the coverage. Check out today’s newspapers too.

The AFC U-14 Football Festival will take place from 18th August to 22nd August 2015 where it will have the opening and the closing ceremony. The participating countries apart from the host Brunei Darussalam will be Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor Leste.
The Chairman also pointed out how the other youth team has shown improvement recently as the score lines were very minimal despite all the loses. On previous years, the gap of the score lines were bigger. This time round the U-14 Brunei team will consist of 18 shortlisted players and in this football festival, every listed player will be given the chance on every game as part of the rules sanctioned by AFC.
The current players are under the guidance of Takao Fujiwara who have been training the boys tirelessly for the past few months. They have been placed at the Games Village and undergoing intensive training. I’m very pleased to know how serious NFABD is in developing the young players especially at a very young age. Give it another few more years, we will definitely see results especially performance wise.
Brunei Darussalam will be grouped together will Malaysia, Timor Leste, the Philippines and Myanmar.
For your info, the matches will only be 30 minutes per half with a 15 minute break. The match field will be smaller than the usual standard.
Entrance will be free and it will be played at both at the Track and Field of Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex and the Berakas Sports Complex.
I’m quite excited and I can’t wait to see the boys show all the training put into the matches. Good luck.

The tournament is coming to an end tomorrow. The much promising football tournament this year has become another successful event. However, it didn’t go as scripted as defending champions of the BIBD At-tamwil University Cup didn’t go as planned. Universiti Brunei Darussalam finally lost their first game as they were beaten by a spirited IGS College 2-1 last Wednesday. UBD had the upper hand with an early lead in the 9th minute through Ak Md Hairulazim Pg Hj Hamzah. It was not until the second half that restored IGS’ confidence and one goal can make a huge difference.
The hero of the night was Ak Mod Shobri Pg Ibrahim who scored a brace (61st and 80th minute). The result means that UBD will take on Cosmopolitan College for the 3rd place (tonight) while ITB will be take on IGS in the finals tomorrow, Saturday 13th June at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Entrance is still free and well done to the co-organisers BIBD At-tamwil and ITB for making the 2nd edition of the tournament a huge success.

Faiq Jefri Bolkiah scored from the penalty spot in the 68th minute to equalize but Timor Leste scored the winning goal five minutes later. Brunei 1 Timor Leste 2.
There have been mixed reactions from fans of the Brunei u-23 football team after their third loss of the campaign in the SEA Games 2015. Tonight they lost to Timor Leste 2-1 despite Faiq Jefri Bolkiah’s debut goal for Brunei. It was a similar story for Brunei who struggled to make an impact for the third time. Perhaps it’s the mental and physical preparation that Brunei ain’t ready just yet. The result meant that Brunei won’t be qualified for the next round and now will play the remaining games for pride and glory.
So what’s your take on Brunei’s performance so far in the SEA Games for football? On a positive note, they are still young lads and they don’t have the luxury to play in a much more competitive league to gain more experience and exposure. I do hope Brunei do their absolute best in the remaining fixtures and it will be starting point leading up to the SEA Games 2019 where Brunei will be hosting.

Politeknik Brunei (PB) last weekend came back from a goal down to salvage a 1-1 draw against Curtin University in Group ‘A’ of the BIBD At-Tamwil University Cup 2015 at the Padang Kebajikan.
Curtin University, the only foreign team in the tournament, took the lead late in the first half as Tisalona Anak Joannes connected with a cross from Thad Bess Chia.
With a majority of the possession and numerous goal attempts, PB could not break the deadlock. Curtin goalkeeper, Jeremy Dom, was on impressive form to thwart PB’s front line of Mohammad Ikmal Hakim and Nur Adi Zulhusni.
The goalkeeper could only do so much when PB super substitute Mohd Hazim Hamzah’s flick header in the 74th minute curled into the goal. The goal was enough to earn PB a point in their last game of the tournament.
PB has now collected four points and sit in third position in Group ‘A’.
Meanwhile, Laksamana College of Business (LCB) beat Cosmopolitan College of Commerce and Technology 2-1, thanks to an injury time goal (90+2) from Muhammad Azizan Akmal Haji Mataii.
Curtin University will next play UNISSA on June 3 at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium at the Police Headquarters.
The next match for the BIBD At-Tamwil University Cup 2015 will see a top of the table clash between Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) on June 2 at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium at the Police Headquarter. Kick off will be at 7.45pm. Text courtesy of James Kon of Borneo Bulletin and images courtesy of Fazizul Haqimie.

The popular short term investment is back!! Takaful Brunei Keluarga (TBK) previously held this special promotion two years ago back in 2013 and it was a big hit. This time round, the stakes are way better. For those who are not aware of Nur Savings from TBK, it’s basically a short term investment (maximum two years) where you will be insured and also gain interest from the savings at a profit of 2% per annum for two years.
The single minimum payment os BND 2,000 and there is no cap for the payment. Previously it was capped at BND 50,000 but now interested parties can inject any amount they feel comfortable with. The 2% interest is a pretty high return as compared to the banks in Brunei. Hence not only you save and get protected, you also earn the extra 2% from your savings. So imagine yourself investing BND 500,000 or even BND 1 million. That would be a great returns in a space of two years only. Awesome deal!!!
This promotion is open to all residents of Brunei Darussalam which means as long as you have an IC (green, purple or yellow), you will be eligible. For those interested parties, you can call TBK’s Certified Financial Planners at 223 1100 during office hours.

We have winners from AMBD Treasure Hunt last weekend. The response was overwhelming and the organizers had to turn down others because it was only limited to 30 teams of two. The treasure hunt went on for two hours and there were given tasks to complete and the top 5 winners will be awarded. The first prize was a pair of tickets to Kuala Lumpur and it was won by team Victorious Secret where they also earned a trophy and a Good Life coin bank.
AMBD Day 2015 had been a successful event, spanning over 3 days and it was showcased at the ICC to create awareness on savings among the community. There has been many queries to the new notices and directives from the AMBD but then it’s all for the benefit of the community and also educating them on the importance of savings.
On 28th May 2015, they have released five notices – Total Debt Service Ratio, Unsecured Personal Credit Facility, Unsecured Personal Financing Facility, Consolidation Loan Scheme and Service Fee/Charges. You can read more of the notices here, taken from the AMBD website.
The Total Debt Service Ratio may be taken in the wrong context but if you look deeply, the positive aspect is that it will ease the burden of the borrower and also allow the borrower to have a better and sufficient disposable income. The other good point is that now the applicant can get a loan up to 18 times its net salary as compared to the previous one by 12 times. The maximum repayment period remains unchanged at six years.
These new directives may not be favourable for the banks in terms of gains but it will be a win-win situation for both the financial institution and consumers in a long run. Ok, enough on my rant on loan caps. Congratulations to the winners of the AMBD Treasure Hunt.

Go, Go Brunei

Royal Bees, our Brunei national netball team, have been working tremendously hard and it’s never easy to climb up the ranks especially when it comes to sports. Sports is a dedicated activity and it usually starts at grass roots level if you want to excel to greater heights to compete internationally. Who said it was easy being an athlete or a sports person?
They have been training very hard leading to the tournament and they have been flying as well to gain more exposure to play against other teams to see the level they are at now. I would say that the Brunei netball team has improved tremendously under the guidance of their netball head coach Thilaka Jinadasa and she had made a difference to the team.
This afternoon they lost their opener to the host Singapore 72-21 and they have nothing to be ashamed of. The Royal Bees gave in their best despite being physically dominated and the Singaporeans were simply fast to begin with. Brunei had little answer to the superiority of the host but the Brunei team still gave their best shot as a team and that is the first step to success – determination.
This could be one reason why Brunei hasn’t been performing or close to grinding out results in the international level. One biggest reason for me is they are not a full time athlete or sports person. And of course, budget is another issue as sports is never seen as a priority for the development of the nation. Hence, just to see or witness how Brunei perform on the courts or fields, I’m glad to say that Brunei did their best at the level they are due to lack of resources.
Even the Brunei U-23 football team only has been gelling as a team for the past few months or so. Even You put an Arsene Wenger as a head coach for the past five months, Brunei team will definitely still struggle because of the lack of preparation and approvals. So to expect a bigger milestone for Brunei in the SEA Games will be a tall order. And the media seems to highlight one promising player Faiq Jefri Bolkiah, who signed up for the U-18 Chelsea club last year. Now the pressure is on him to deliver what he can do for Brunei and he was even given the task to lead the team as the Brunei captain.
Two days ago, Brunei performed below expectations in the football arena, losing to a better team Vietnam in the 6-0 rout. Many question marks have been put forth if Brunei is ready to take on the international stage. Yes, it’s true that in football, the ball is round meaning anything can happen and results can go either way. However, it didn’t seem to be the case for Brunei in the opening match. They didn’t even register a shot on target through the 95 minutes. Let’s hope for a better outing tonight against Laos and you can catch it live on youtube at 8:30pm
As for the Royal Bees, they will take on Myanmar tomorrow (Monday, 1st June) at 1:30pm but sadly no live telecast even on youtube.

Annison, Sales Manager of SsangYong (T.C.Y. Motors) and Alvin Caro, PR and Advertising Executive of SsangYong (T.C.Y. Motors) unveiling the new SsangYong’s Tivoli at their Kiarong showroom
Check out the Tivoli on Youtube
When I saw the images sent by T.C.Y. Motors during the sneak preview of the Tivoli, I was like pretty impressed by the overall design. The first thing that came to my mind is that it doesn’t feel or look like a European car. This is the latest edition to the SsangYong family line, the Tivoli. Yes, even the name sounds European in a way. The official launch of this particular model will be in June 2015 but there have been many pre-bookings from the public already even before its release. The media had the privilege to have a close look at the Tivoli – the low spec and the high spec at the SsangYong Kiarong Showroom.
We had a quick test drive on the red colour Tivoli but we haven’t fully tested it. So far it was a good ride and I was even considering this for my next car because I’m more of an SUV person and though it’s smaller than an SUV, it has its sporty feel. There are so many things to love about the Tivoli and I assure you that the Tivoli will be a big hit in Brunei.
One of its strength is the D-cut Steering Wheel. It has a steering wheel with “sporty d-cut” design, highlighting a sporty look with its horizontal bottom line and this will enhance the driving experience with optimal grip. If you go for the hi spec, then you will get a premium leather finish on the steering wheel too.
The seats have been awarded for being “Ergonomic” in Korea. Consisting of dual density pads and Pullmaflex spring system, bonded together to create an award-winning seat. It has earned the Tivoli a reputation for optimal comfort and convenience.
There’s also a Multi Audio System with a 7” inch touchscreen display (hi-spec). You can sync your smartphones via Bluetooth or HDMI.
When it comes to safety, Tivoli ensures passengers’ safety by applying the latest technology and high strength material and it also provides outstanding inner equipment space for outdoor activities. The material of the Tivoli has AHSS (Advanced high strength steel). For your info, AHSS is used for about 40% on the body and “hot press forming” process is used on 10 major areas.
T.C.Y. Motors SsangYong is even giving one special prize – Samsung S6 Edge. All you have to do is register your interest for the Tivoli through their website tivoli.ssangyong-brunei.com or their Facebook Page.
The price tag for the Tivoli is reasonably competitive and this is the reason why I’m confident this model, Tivoli, will be a big hit in Brunei. Thank you, Annison and Alvin for hosting us yesterday.

DPMM FC update
Finally DPMM FC broke the old jinx of not winning against Tampines Rovers. They have not beaten them in 7 attempts since 2012 (two draws and five losses). Last night DPMM FC was back to winning ways and they scored a 2-0 victory over the visitors now coached by Sundramoorthy, former Singapore football player.
Goals were scored by impressive import Sergio and Ramazotti and it was also the return of Rodrigo Tosi and Roberto Alvez, former DPMM FC players, who are now contracted with Tampines Rovers. It was a bitter sweet return for both players who have contributed during their years as DPMM FC players. The only setback for DPMM FC was the dismissal of Azwan Ali late in the game. It was one weird altercation when Azwan Ali flick his boot towards his own teammate Boris Raspudic and yes, that was totally unexpected and it had to happen in front of a home crowd.
That altercation also sparked a heated confrontation between Wardun Yussof and Boris but the situation was cooled down. DPMM FC coach Steve Kean said he hasn’t seen such thing in a long time and he pointed out that Azwan Ali made a big mistake last night. He is certain such thing won’t happen again in the future matches.
DPMM FC are currently in good form in the S•League with two games in hand and let’s hope the momentum stays that way. DPMM FC’s next match will be this Thursday, 14th May against Albirex Niigata FC (S) at Jurong East Stadium, Singapore.
