Who loves Korean food? Well, I definitely do. To our great happiness, Kimchi Restaurant at Regent Square is again having its Ramadhan Sungkai buffet. Priced at $28.90 for adults and $14.90 for children, it offers a list of all-you-can-eat items on the menu.
The place was bustling with people when I went there. But even though the staff looked extremely busy, they took care of each table and the food did not take long to arrive either. The side dishes actually arrived almost as soon as we were seated.
But the reason behind visiting Kimchi is of course for the BBQ. The BBQ selection was filled with assorted meat to seafood to vegetables to local favourites. This time also, I took my faithful Sungkai partner, Pranika. Although she doesn’t take beef, she had three different kinds of marinated chicken as well as lamb to grill. Sizzling on the grill, they made our mouths water. If you do not feel full with just meat, you can also order rice or noodles. And let’s not forget company of the crew of Filterworks Production who have been very supportive of my project during Ramadan. Thank you so much!! (Do watch their videos).
Among the desserts, I would recommend you to try something unique to Kimchi – the Patbingsu, which is something like a Korean ABC and of course, my personal favourite dessert of all Korean desserts in Brunei. Topped with sweet potatoes, jelly and red beans, it is truly a refreshing thing to have after a BBQ. If you’re not very adventurous, you can ask for ice-cream which they serve in a generous scoop.
If Kimchi is your next Sungkai stop, don’t forget to make a booking just to secure your seats.
There’s also a 15% discount on all takeaways form 11am to 5:30pm, only during the month of Ramadhan. So do take advantage of the offers Kimchi gives. You can also visit their Facebook Page for updates or follow their updates on @kimchibrunei on instagram.

Breaking fast at RBGCC
RBGCC is located after BEQ (Equestrian) simpang at Jerudong. Well, it’s not far from the Royal Polo and Riding Club. Just see this banner on the main road and you are almost there 😀
If you’re looking for a decent, quiet place without the hubbub of crowded Sungkai-ers, the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club is the place for you. And yes, this is an unheard venue since the area is always dedicated for members of the RBGCC. So this is the first time it’s open to public for Sungkai (buffet) and I must say they are pretty impressive. Even though there weren’t a lot of people (probably because most aren’t aware of this), the staff were dutiful and attentive to us.
The restaurant itself gives a very classy ambiance, with comfortable and spacious setting. The items on the menu, although limited, make up in quality. Some of the items included nasi biryani, pineapple curry and steamed fish. Desserts consisted of assorted fresh fruit, fruit salad and kuih.
My sungkai buddies Pranika and Sharon liked the food and they were helping themselves to second rounds. Pranika enjoyed the biryani as she described it as “not too dry and not too moist – cooked with just the right amount of water”. Sharon had two favourites – the lamb, which was tender and the steamed fish (She ate almost half of the fish!). I particularly liked the cucur udang as it was flavourful and not too oily.
RBGCC, located at a quaint area in Jerudong is the best venue if you wish to spend quality time and have actual conversations while having a fulfilling meal with your family or significant others. It is priced at $15 for adults and $6 for children. But making a booking is recommended. So call them at 2611 582 or 261 2914 for bookings.
For your info, the RBGCC is just one simpang after the BEQ at Jerudong Polo Club. You won’t miss it as there will be a banner by the entrance of the simpang.

Modesto Food Fair Festival: Sungkai
My guests for tonight – Nabilah and the boys from Filterworks Production minus A’aqiil
Filterworks experiencing Sungkai at Modesto
Finally, Modesto Bistro & Grill are introducing their Sungkai buffet line after the first week of Ramadhan. As you now Modesto has been undergoing some minor renovation to cater to the needs of their patrons. So if you have plenty of room for savoury dishes and desserts, I would recommend you to break your fast at Modesto.
Family goers would appreciate it more because they have a mini play area for their kids to wander.
For me, the clear winner is the dessert area because of the three brands that they brought in – Twinklepan, Hippo & Bees and Lof Bakery. Of course, the main courses were pretty good too at the buffet line but ironically I spent more on the desserts.
Also something about the sauce of the pasta that I like. If I’m not mistaken, it’s the one with the seafood mixture sauce. I had two rounds of those too.
Do take advantage of the promotion from BIBD and on every Tuesday you can enjoy 30% of BIBD Credit Card. Awesome!!! And not forgetting the daily discounts you can get from different range of BIBD cards.
Do experience and enjoy their special Modesto Buffet and it’s only available at Modesto Batu Bersurat branch. You can visit their Facebook Page for updates.

Pepperlunch deals

Ready for a sizzling meal?
Filterworks experiencing Sungkai at Pepperlunch
My first experience of Pepperlunch was back in Kuala Lumpur back in 2014. It was located a food court joint of a shopping mall and I was quite impressed with the food. I didn’t realise it was a franchise until it came to Brunei last December.
Now Pepperlunch has become a household name among Bruneians and during the Ramadhan period, they are running a special gimmick for the Pepperlunch diners. Now you can enjoy one dish/meal for free when you buy 2 dishes of the menu. On top of that, they will also give you a bonus side dish and drink. Ain’t that a great deal?
Even the lunch take away, they have the same deal where you buy two and get one free. The responses have been pretty good ever since they ran the promotion and you can say that it’s really value for money.
I had my favourite dish – Premium Beef with Hamburg while my friend, Awfa, loved the Cheesy Omelette with Curry Sauce.
To see more of the choices they, you can see Thanis post on his blog entry or you can also follow Pepperlunch Brunei Facebook Page for updates. I’m definitely making another trip to Pepperlunch because the quality is just as consistent as in KL and also during my recent trip to Jakarta. Keep it up!!

Swensen’s Delight
Patrons enjoying their dinner at Swensen’s Sengkurong
Filterworks experiencing Sungkai at Swensen’s
It’s been a week of Puasa already. That means I’ve been to 7 different places for my Sungkai. My latest visit was at Swensen’s at Sengkurong (oh, they have another branch at The Mall, Gadong).
The place was was very welcoming – the fairy lights above the dinner buffet, the friendly staff, the warm interior makes up an excellent first impression. This was the only place I’ve visited that had lesser number of people but that didn’t let the mood down for everyone in there.
A bit of highlight on the main course, the varieties were just enough to get a complete taste of each item. The tomato rice and salmon pasta took the cake among the savouries. A separate station for salad as well as Kueh Teow soup was situated on one side for those looking for ‘lighter’ meals.
The star of the buffet, however, was the desserts. Apart from the delicious assorted puddings and pastries, they also served waffles. A member of the staff was patiently waiting until you finish piling those items on your plate and ask for a scoop of ice-cream. Not just that, you could top your waffles with anything from chocolate sprinkles to cookies to chocolate syrups. It just took me back to my childhood when I could eat all the sweet things in the world without any care.
Speaking of sweet things, another attraction of Swensen’s were the drinks. The good news is they have 50% off on selected drinks (such as Milo Float) if you dine in with the Sungkai buffet! Also, their bestselling item on the menu is Cendol milkshake float (not part of the discount). That is definitely something worth trying.
For a reasonable $16.80 for adults and $12 for children, you can enjoy a scrumptuous meal that will satisfy your taste buds. So if you’re near Sengkurong or don’t mind the drive there, you should go and try the buffet. You won’t be disappointed.

Bombay Palace for Sungkai

The mood after breaking your fast at Bombay Palace
Bombay Palace. One of the great places to dine if you are craving for Indian food especially. The choices are just simple and of high quality. This is ideal especially for me who doesn’t eat much but surprisingly I had seconds because the dishes are tasty to begin with.
I had to delay my trip to Bombay Palace by a day because the venue was fully booked. The restaurant also hired a new chef, Farouk (spelling?), who has 13 years of cooking experience and he has been working at the Radisson Hotel in India. I have to say that I do like his cooking. Even my Sungkai buddies had seconds from the buffet line.
My favourites are the Palak Kofta and the Chicken Punjabi. I guess the green sauce of the Palak Kofta was the killer. For this, I had three rounds. The texture and the taste were just spot on. Seng Yee love the Mutton Kadai.. Yea, it’s called Kadai *lol* but yea, this is another great dish. If you crave for something spicier, then the Fish Tikka Masala will satisfy your taste buds.
Price wise is pretty of good value, just below $12 for adults to begin with. You definitely will be satisfied with the overall experience. This year I chose not to do many restaurants and focus on quality ones and I have to say Bombay Palace have the right mix. Not too many and not too little. Just nice..

PSW Jerudong
Pondok Sari Wangi at Jerudong. A must visit.
Pondok Sari Wangi, renowned for their variety of Indonesian cuisine, has their Sungkai Promotion at $20 for adults and $16 for children only at Jerudong outlet. Now don’t get me wrong.. Different branches have different price range and such. The one I visited was the one at their newest branch at Jerudong (just near first area of the Jerudong Park food court).
The Jerudong branch has a bigger venue and it made a mark when it had its first wedding dinner event at the 200 plus capacity restaurant. What I love about the Jerudong branch that it has a mini aquarium where you will enjoy the freshness of the seafood items. We were in luck as we had the butter milk crab as part of their sungkai buffet.
The difference I found there from other places was that the crowd wasn’t too much in the beginning as they trickled in phases. Hence we had an easier time getting our food from the buffet line. The buffet itself had items like mee goreng telor, baby kailan (Pranika love this dish) in oyster sauce, crabs, prawns along with appropriate sides like fried tahu and tempe to accompany them.
I was especially drawn to the desserts section where traditional items were served in an appetizing manner. Among all, I tried this item which I had never had at Pondok – the kecang hitam. It was a red bean-based dessert and I liked it so much that I had two servings of it.
The people slowly started coming in around 7 and it was just a good timing so queuing was not a problem. The staff also caught my attention as they were attentive to the needs of each guest.
Great atmosphere, dedicated staff and delicious food. What else can we ask for? If you’re still deciding where to go for Sungkai tonight or tomorrow or day after, Pondok Sari Wangi (Jerudong) should be on your list. Let’s not forget my favourite dish on their ala carte menu – Beef Rendang and Telur Belado.

Rack & Brew Sungkai promotion
The Crepe Lasagne, one of Rack & Brew’s signature dishes
This is the first of its kind for Rack & Brew – Sungkai buffet. I’m a big fan of their kolo mee and their cakes but this time, Rack & Brew came up with something more attractive for the benefit of their patrons.
They have a good variety of main courses to begin with. My personal favourite is the ribs.. Or I could be just biased since I’m a sucker for ribs. If you are not settled for just ribs, R&B also serves lamb.. yum yum. Then something else caught my taste.. It was the Gado-Gado 😀 Why? Because of the spicy peanut sauce. It has this unique spicy feeling that I can’t explain and I ended up having two servings of it.
Do expect a mixture of Asian and Western cuisines such as satays, tempura, assorted sushis and many more..
There are also the healthy corner where you can enjoy the salad and vegetables. Apparently, my buddy Louis was a big fan of their mushroom soup.. He had more than two rounds of it.
All in all, the choices were just great and you will have a great time with your families and friends because R&B also has a cozy ambience.
You can also see more coverage on Thanis Lim’s post on R&B sungkai coverage.

Tasty Tandoor
Filterworks experiencing Sungkai at Tandoor Restaurant
It is my unspoken habit to go to Tandoor at least once every month. Since it opened a buffet line during last Ramadhan, I went there three times that month for Sungkai. I wasn’t going to miss it again this year. And I sure wasn’t disappointed. The ambiance was so cozy, it was less noisy and the aroma that filled the air was amazing.
Tandoor has an exclusive mixture of Indian, Italian and Arabic cuisines on its menu. I quickly went to the main draw of this buffet – the mouth-watering Lamb Mandi, also known as Talam. It is actually a popular Arabian dish which has perfectly cooked, moist rice with very tender lamb. The lamb is flavourful and you can just taste the spices in every bite. Also, the Lamb Mandi is enough to feed the entire restaurant unless everyone decides to go for seconds. It is available every Sungkai so you won’t have to worry about it not being served when you visit.
Less known to a lot of people who go to Tandoor for Indian and Arabic food, their Italian dishes on the menu is worth trying too. I personally love the pizza there. As for desserts, their homemade ice-cream has a unique taste so I recommend that for those looking for something sweet after the main course.
$20 for adults and $12 for children is a great catch and value for money. What more? It opens until 2am for Sahur. So don’t forget to visit Tandoor for Sungkai this Ramadhan.

Ramadhan falls on Tuesday
An official looks through a telescope as Acting Minister of Development Dato Hj Suhaimi (L) looks on during the moon sighting to determine the first day of Ramadhan at the DST headquarters yesterday. As predicted, Ramadhan will fall tomorrow Tuesday 7th June 2016. The moon sighting was held at DST headquarters, another at Bukit Agok in Jerudong, Bukit Ambok in Tutong and Bukit Lumut in Belait. Image courtesy of Zaim Kasmat of The Brunei Times.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office touring the cooking demo using bruneihalal products and he said how simple it was to make a healthy meal
It’s always great to know a local brand being recognized internationally. One of them brand is bruneihalal. After being in existence for many years (9 years), there is a sudden change in progress as Ghanim International Corporation (that handles bruneihalal) has been introducing many new products to bring more traction for the brand.
Last weekend, the invited guests were feted to delicious meals using bruneihalal products such as a the bruneihalal chicken (imported from the UK) and provia and cremvia (both natural sweeteners) to name a few.
The event was organised by bruneihalal and the guest of honour was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Before the food sampling, the guest of honour delivered his welcoming remarks and praised the global direction that Ghanim International Corporation is heading. For your info, the said company also has an office in the UK and the chicken products in the UK are from a Brunei certified abattoir in the UK and the items are certified by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Brunei Darussalam. Interesting.
Also present were the Dato Paduka Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, chairman of Ghanim International Corporation and Dr Nur Rahman, CEO of Ghanim International Corporation who both are instrumental in the recent surge of growth of the bruneihalal brand.
Last weekend also saw 25 new bruneihalal products being unveiled by Ghanim and these products were made through collaboration with the local SMES in Brunei which includes Sabli Food Industries Sdn Bhd, Sahamada Corporation Sdn Bhd, Hana Soy & World Sdn Bhd and Superwater Marketing Sdn Bhd.

Let’s hope the local brand is well received among the locals
Food sampling after the launch of the event
Yummmm…
The Minister mingling with the invited guests
Food preparation for the guests
The Energy Kitchen used the sweetener for their tarts. Oh it’s a natural sweetener and it’s also ideal for those with diabetes.
The Minister was full of praises of Ghanim’s direction and the key component he shared was being “innovative” for bruneihalal brand to be sustainable and bigger. The halal food industry is a multi-billion industry and hence, Ghanim can ride on these opportunities along the value chain of the halal food industry. He also hopes that the bruneihalal brand can help spur the local and international economy through means of distribution and production.
As for the food sampling session of the bruneihalal new products, YB Pehin Dato Hj Mohd Yasmin was impressed and he urged the locals to support the bruneihalal products for their daily cooking needs. I actually had the bruneihalal chicken and I’m amazed of the quality (tenderness and taste) even though the chicken came in a packed form. So far, the bruneihalal chicken and other products are being sold at Tesco and Asda stores in the UK. So I’m hoping for the bruneihalal chicken to make its way to the Brunei market soon.
Do watch out for this space on bruneihalal products. They are certainly riding the wave and now, the awareness campaign begins in reaching the eyes of the locals to appreciate our own local brand, bruneihalal.

The tutu kurungs now available at Bajoo
Heard of Tutu Kurungs? It’s something new to me and I recently attended a launch at Sugar Sugar by Bajoo (located at Mata-Mata Complex). I believe this will be a big hit among the girls and it’s something new and fashionable too.
It’s a combination of pettitskirt and a baju knurl. This is their second collection inspired by My Little Pony characters and hence it’s called tutu kurungs.
There are ready-to-wear tutu kurungs and starts from 1 years old to 9 years old. Bajoo also caters for custom made ones too.
The said brand have been doing quite well in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore under the label of sugar sugar.
So what are your waiting for parents? Want your daughters to look impressive in the tutu kurungs? They only costs BND 98 per piece and this will be ideal for Hari Raya festive season.
Thank you, both of you, for the invite and congratulations 😀
