The Long Month

It’s great to be back again but not dreading for work. I have countless piles of work pending and I don’t even know where to begin with. Probably an assistant would have suffice. I tend to be freer whenever I’m abroad and I feel under pressure whenever I’m in Brunei. Some even suggested that I get a PR status in Singapore since I was born there too. Singapore was fun. My trip was shy of a fortnight and I had a splendid time with my family especially my mom who is recovering from a minor surgery. I was also there in Singapore to celebrate her birthday earlier this week before I head back home.

A few highlights for me was the Earth Hour in Singapore, the release of the Adidas FX Flux in Singapore (though there is a big downside to that) and also the quick sneaks of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hosted by Sony Pictures (Singapore). And of course, I was able to catch up with a few of my buddies in Singapore too. I shall be making another trip back if time permits and I hope to be there in time for the exclusive premiere of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before it will be released the following week.

I have yet to settle here back in Brunei and I’ve been spending more time catching on my deprived rest. I know this myself that I need to organise my things to get back in shape. I’m also pretty behind in my fitness level as I have registered for the 21km race for Sundown, end of May, in Singapore. So there are many things under my checklist before mid year kicks in and time has been flying pretty fast I must say. The other guilty thing(s) that I’m aware of are my resolutions for 2014 which I pledged for myself on 1st January 2014. I would say that I’m only 2% on it and this is already mid April *lol* Talk about commitment, aye? I hope my baby steps can give a much needed boost to get me going for my resolution.

I recently attended the BIT Council meeting and I learnt quite a few things that were shared among the members of the BIT Council. This actually stands for Brunei Information Technology Council and it’s spearheaded by the Minister of Communications. We recently were given a book which has a case study on Brunei’s indices rating on technology and it is being reported that we are pretty far behind when it comes to affordability. Many of us have questioned the credibility of the findings as it contradicts the predicted patterns of the consumer ends side of the things. Perhaps there wasn’t much explanation given in-depth on the findings and I believe the government have spend quite on a fortune on it too.

Recent weeks have been challenging indeed. Making new friends, reconciling ones and sustaining the closer ones. I have learnt the different types of characters that I’ve gone through and it was also a great reflection of myself too. Despite the awareness that I have, the choices I have made may not be favourable in the eyes of some. I have yet to reach my highest self and give myself a kick in the butt that I can do better. My connections with my trusted ones have been haywire to say the least. I have probably judged my own being too and allow others to judge my well being and actions. For now, it’s a rebuilding journey ahead. Lessons after lessons with many distractions along the way. Well, that’s how life is, right?

I’m gonna enjoy my Sunday and recover back from my sleepy eyes. Have a great Sunday, peeps!!!

Oh, below are some of the photos that I felt like sharing with your guys.

During my mom’s birthday earlier this week. Thank you, mom, for being a great provider to the family and continuously supporting us since Day 1. I surprised her with some flowers I bought from Takashimaya. Though there aren’t as big as others but this small gesture has more meaning and it was the first time I actually handed a bouquet of flowers to my mom personally 😀

Yazid Yakub what sapped me this picture earlier this afternoon and I wept a little seeing this photo. It shows how much I missed my high school years back in Geelong Grammar School, Victoria, Australia. Yesterday there was our class reunion on 94’ and sadly, I wasn’t able to join Yazid and the rest down under. The picture was taken during our final year prom night to mark the end of our high school years. Thank you for the memories 😀

A nameless soft toy given to me by @lilmopiko @timelessrealm. I have no idea why I was so attached to this toy and I carried with me wherever I went. Not until my trip to Penang in 2012, I lost it and till today, I couldn’t let go that feeling of attachment. Many lessons can be learnt here.

A match that I didn’t bother to catch live on TV but just rely on social media for updates. This was the rematch between Manny and Bradley and the Filipino managed to avenge his defeat by an unanimous decision. This is a great shot by the way.

Some billed this as a title decider. I think not. There are still plenty of points to play for. Should Liverpool beat Manchester City and Chelsea this month, it’s a high possibility the title could be virtually Liverpool’s. The season hasn’t been this exciting for many years as it has become a three horse race.

I tried these Burger King’s Drummets and I was impressed. It’s available now at our local franchise store at Bandar

I caught Wrestlemania and my reactions were pretty mixed. I love the finale though but the saddest part is to see The Undertaker’s streak to end by Brock Lesnar. Then again, it has to happen one day and Brock is a much better candidate to do so. Hulk Hogan didn’t do much to host Wrestlemania so I don’t see why the big hype. By the way, I had to fork out USD 60 for the PPV as I was watching it on WWE.com on my notebook.

These wireless Jabra earpieces are awesome especially for my runs. The only problem which can be annoying is when it’s trying to pair with my phone device. It may take some time to detect. A few days ago, I accidentally left these earpiece on the McDonald’s tray at Singapore. There goes my Jabra piece. How careless of me!!!

Great deals for those purchasing the Acer Smartphones at Concepts Computer. If you are senior citizen or even a teacher or a student, you can now get these Acer smartphones and you will be given a 2600 mAH powerbank (while stock lasts). Pretty cool, aye? So do drop by Concepts Computer and check them out. I shall be writing more on these special promotion by tomorrow. Stay tune!!

Chef Cathy from Royal Brunei Catering was participating in the recent FHA 2014 Culinary Challenge. She didn’t win in her category but she really enjoyed the experience. Her colleague Chef Ahmad bagged Silver Medal under the “Class 3B Pastry Showpiece”. RBC sent 8 chefs to compete in the Culinary Challenge recently held in Singapore.

There was quite a crowd at the recent FHA2014 held at the Singapore Expo. My feet were aching just walking through most of the halls. There were 10 halls altogether. Apparently those who attended previous FHA events said that there weren’t much difference.

Finally it rained in Singapore after weeks of dry spell. I’m also sporting my current favourite walking shoes too – Adidas FX Flux though I’m still bummed out that I missed out the Prism Flux edition.

I bumped into an old friend at the Changi Airport and she was transiting from her Umrah trip via Singapore. We kinda have matching head covers 😀

There will be a garage sale today. From 9am to 2pm. Venue: Simpang 38 House No. 22 Jalan Chempaka. Call 8989132 for details. Expect some toys, books, home decor and many more. The earlier the better. Who knows you will find some classic gems 😀

Fiona the podiatrist was trimming my new customized insole for my running Adidas shoes and thank you so much for the great service. I shall talk about this soon and share with you my experience at The Sole Clinic at SOHO2, Singapore. I would definitely recommend you to try this place if you have problems with your feet or leg especially for runners.

The interesting phenomena that took Brunei by storm. This was the most trending picture last Tuesday. This image belongs to Rachael Yeo 😀

Such a sad news to know that the Ultimate Warrior passed away. He was just on Wrestlemania 30 and came on RAW and passed away a day later. He is definitely a legend superstar for WWE and it was good to see him being inducted in the Hall of Fame

Another friend I bumped into in Singapore and we did a quick shopping at Zara. Happy belated Aziimah 😀

Mom bought a stack of this iTunes card at Qisahn at Far East Shopping Centre, Orchard Road. A USD 15 card only costs BND 20. Good deal, aye?

I miss this place already. This was my regular jogging spot at the Singapore Botanics Garden. The only place that I can appreciate nature and the green while burning my calories. The swing does bring some childhood memories.

Brunei Lego Meet 2014

Happening this weekend

It’s been happening this weekend which started yesterday at the Mabohai Shopping Complex. Yesterday there was a group build (Parisian Restaurant) among the BULAT members and there is also an ongoing competition on instagram for the hidden mini figures contest.

Just check out the posters below for details. Today (Saturday) will be the polybags speed building competition which will happen at 2pm. The competition is limited to the first 40 participants. The top 3 participants will be notified to come on Sunday 23rd March for the prize presentation. The top three winners will win Lego sets from BULAT.

Tomorrow Sunday there will be minfigures record attempt. Not sure what that actually means but I assume is the amount of minifigures to be displayed. The event is organised by Mabohai Shopping Complex and BULAT.

Badi’ah Hotel Restaurant

The ongoing promotion at Badi’ah Hotel Restaurant every weekend
Have you ever dine at Badi’ah Hotel Restaurant? Not many people know of its existence. You might be aware of the old Badi’ah building and it has been going through a transformation and now it’s turned into a hotel and a restaurant. I dined for the first time at Badi’ah Hotel Restaurant on the 1st floor and it has quite a spacious area to begin with.

Currently they are having a special promotion – Badi’ah Fusion Buffer Dinner. The buffet dinner offers free flow of appetisers, soup, main course, noodles, porridge, seafood, hot dishes, desserts featuring Chinese, Malay, English and Japanese flavours prepared by the kitchen staff with 30 years of experience in the food and beverage field. The dinner also includes a free flow of beverages.

Some of the standard items for the buffet dinner includes Ayam Masak Merah, Salted Egg Chicken, Mongolian Lamb, Beef Rendang, Sweet and Sour Fish, Butter Egg Fish, Roasted Poultry, Mixed Vegetables with Oyster Sauce, Wantan Broccoli and an assortment of tantalising Japanese sushi and Chinese dim sum to choose from as well fruit tarts, assorted cakes, sandwiches and more for dessert.

However, the menu will be changed every weekend night, according to Joey Kong Siow Wei, the Manager of Badi’ah Hotel Restaurant. The buffet dinner starts from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, every Friday to Sunday. It is priced at $28.80 for adults and $14.40 for children. But good news is that they are having a 20% discount on the weekends until end of March.

They will also stand a chance to win a mini iPad and smartphone in a lucky draw session. The eatery also provides outside catering services as well as banquet services to which the hotel can accommodate a maximum of 800 people. For more information, call the Badi’ah Hotel at 7292221 or 222 073/4. You can also follow their updates on instagram @badiahhotelrestaurant

Interview for Film Festival UBD 2014

Play podcast on my interview with the guys behind the Film Festival UBD 2014

Today’s the final day

Times Square Shopping Centre has always been great in creating events and exposure for participating tenants. After the successful Japan Festival 2014 event, TSSC held another interactive event for the public, targeting the younger generation with the gimmick called “Armed for the Undead”.

This event has been a success since Wednesday and sadly today will be the final day. I saw a lot of interest after my posting on instagram last Wednesday. The “Armed for the Undead” event or more commonly known as the Nerf versus Zombies experience is an innovative form of entertainment that Times Square Management has organized specially for this year’s first school term break. With an entry fee of only $3, customers get to choose their “weapon” or Nerf Gun and walk their way into the zombie infested arena. Supported by The Brunei Milsims Cosplayers, customers were also given a short briefing of the rules to ensure a safe playing environment.

Today it will be open by 11am and ends at 9pm tonight. So if you haven’t try, you still have a chance to do so. The cost per entry is $3 and those under 5 years old will not be allowed. You can check out their updates on instagram @timessquarebrunei

A note from Times Square Shopping Centre management: To all of the valued customers of Times Square Shopping Centre, it is almost that time of the year again. Last 18th December 2013, Times Square Shopping Centre announced the beginning of the 4th Series Lucky Draw Campaign and the first quarter of the campaign has ended on 21st March 2014 at 10.00 pm.

Times Square Property Management would like to remind the loyal customers that the first lucky draw will be held Sunday, 23rd March 2014 at the Times Square Atrium at 2.00 pm. With 20 receipts chosen daily, Times Square will be expecting quite a huge crowd of hopeful winners from 1800 receipts that have been collected since the beginning of the campaign.

Also, Lucky Draw coupon holders must be present at the Lucky Draw presentation, along with their Identity Cards (IC) as proof of identity and their Lucky Draw coupons. Representatives are allowed, but they must bring along their own ICs, as well as the photocopy IC of the winner along with the original coupon.

Need for Speed

I love Aaron Paul in Breaking Bad. However, I couldn’t picture him leading a role just yet on the big screen. His role as the protagonist in Need For Speed is questionable. Is he really a hero after the two hour ordeal that I had to go through? Plot wise, this is nothing interesting and for many, they won’t care much about the plot as they have something to look forward to and that is fast, beautiful cars which ain’t a selling point for me.

The plus points for me was the camera style and technique on the car chase sequences. I would say that some of the scenes were slightly better than Fast and the Furious series. Maybe the director attempted to bring more realism with great score and sound editing along with it. Do listen to my podcast on the popcorn panel and yes, I have another quiz too but you have to answer them on my instagram handle to be eligible for the grand prize.

So far the reviews have been favourable among my peers. But an eight will be too high for my liking. Movie has many flaws to make this a classic. I still prefer the FF series. Verdict: 7/10 @abbylmf 6.8 Rottentomatoes 23%

Check out the podcast review for Need for Speed

UBD Film Festival 2014

I’m kinda excited for this event as I’m a movie buff and also my interest in film making is kinda high. This is the first time that UBD will be hosting a Film Festival that will feature some of the students’ modules of short films as well as some of the local house production short films. The actual event will be on the 19th and 20th of April which will take place at the Core, Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The tickets are free but the seats are limited over the two day period.

Last night, I was being interviewed by the marketing committee of UBD Film Festival 2014 and I’m honoured to be part of their project. They also interviewed some local videographers and creative directors where Elizabeth Sim was the host for the TV show format interview. Well, why I was chosen was because of my own going podcast on movie reviews on Sound Cloud – The Popcorn Panel.

Ironically, I interviewed the director of marketing, UBD Film Festival 2014, Efah, and you will be able to catch the interview soon on the Popcorn Panel. Good luck to you guys and I can see how much effort have been invested in this event. So peeps, don’t forget to catch UBD Film Festival 2014 on 19th and 20th April at the Core, UBD.

UBD Film Festival 2014 are also running a short film submissions from the public and you can check out their terms and conditions on their website and you can also download the form if you are interested. Who knows your short film will be shortlisted and be shown during the said event. You can also follow them on instagram @filmfestivalubd2014

Amazing trailer

Check out the first official trailer for Yasmine the movie

It was great to see the 30 second trailer of the much anticipated first featured film produced by a Bruneian entitled “YASMINE”. You may have heard about the movie on my older posts back last year and now it’s getting very close to reality that Yasmine the movie will be hit theaters and the producers have announced that the movie will be released by August 2014. Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia will be the first countries to release the movie though Yasmine will make its private screening at the Hong Kong International Film Festival (24-27th March) and Festival De Cannes: Marche Du Film (14-24th May).

As you can see that the Brunei’s film industry is still in its infant stage. So it’s great to see Origin Films taking a huge risk in creating this film which costs quite a huge sum of money. With the support of the Brunei Economic Development Board and the ministries involved in funding the project, Origin Films is confident that the Yasmine will translate not just exposure but also into box office success with Indonesia being the major market.

I have never been so excited about a local featured film for such a long time. The trailer itself have already raised my expectations on Yasmine and I have observed behind-the-scenes moments of Yasmine especially during shooting and I learnt so much about film making and I’m beginning to appreciate the efforts of even those who had minor roles in the film production.

Yesterday the media and bloggers were invited by Origins Film where Siti Kamaluddin, the director, introduced to the guests of the teaser trailer for Yasmine. She’s the lady behind the project with the help of Din Kamaluddin (producer), Chan Man Ching (stunt coordinator, action choreographer) as Action Director, Salman Aristo as Screenplay writer (Ayat-Ayat Cinta, Sang Penari), Cesa David Lukmansyah as Film Editor (Rumah di Seribu Ombak), Khikmawan Santosa as the Sound Designer, Aghi Narottama as the Music Director and Nidji, the composer and original songs on the soundtrack for Yasmine.

In attendance were representatives from Brunei Economic Development Board (LEAP Grant division), Baiduri Bank and Times Cineplex who were also impressed with the teaser trailer. Yasmine is very likely to be shown exclusively at Times Cineplex by August 2014. I shall keep you guys in the loop when the release date gets closer.

You can see some of the details of Yasmine the movie at their website yasminethemovie.com and you can also follow them on Twitter and instagram @yasminthemovie for updates. The web portal was also launched yesterday to give more hype on the movie before its release.

I shall be posting more behind-the-scene pictures in a few weeks’ time. Congratulations to Siti and her team on their tirelessly effort in producing a locally made film. You have my full support definitely.

Members of the local media were also present

The cast from Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia feature Liyana Yus from Brunei playing the lead role of Yasmine. From Indonesia we see leading man Reza Rahadian (Fahri – Yasmine’s Father), Agus Kuncoro (Jamal – Silat teacher), Dwi Sasono (Tong Lung – School Silat teacher), Arifin Putra (Fahri’s friend) as well as young actors Roy Sungkono and Mentari De Marelle. Actors from Malaysia involved in this film feature none other than Dian P Ramlee, Dato’ M. Nasir, Nabila Huda, Soo Wincci, Carmen Soo and Aryl Falak.

YASMINE is a beautifully choreographed story that inspires us to revisit our dreams. Action, comedy and drama come together powerfully in this unforgettable journey. YASMINE being the first international feature film from Brunei has gained the attention of the film world and many international media. YASMINE has been featured in the Monocle (British Magazine) and has had articles in The Guardian (British Newspaper) and many other newspapers both locally and around the region. YASMINE will be introduced to the international film industry by appearing at the film market in the Hong Kong International Film Festival (24 March – 7 April) and the Cannes Film Festival (14-25 May) this year.

Seats are secured

I have been a big fan of purchasing movie tickets online. One reason – I don’t have to worry about my booked seats being taken because I paid for my seats and if I don’t turn up, then that’s my loss. I’ve always bought my tickets online whenever I’m in Singapore. For Brunei, the furthest we could do is book the seats online without online payment. This would mean that our seats won’t be guaranteed and according to Benny Ang, the General Manager of Times Cineplex, they can easily lose 60% from simply phone bookings, meaning the supposedly patrons didn’t show up for the selected movies they booked.

Today Times Cineplex have introduced online payment system for customers. I applaud such move and this will give movie goers a piece of mind especially me when it comes to securing your seats at Times Cineplex. You will need your Debit and Credit Card for sure and there won’t be a surcharge or booking fee when using the card. So that’s great news for movie goers. This online payment systems is only available for Times Cineplex.

“Ever since we opened nearly a year and a half ago, we have always maintained that we will continue to try and provide the very best for our customers”, said Benny Ang.

“We are delighted that this online booking facility is the first of its kind in Brunei for cinemas in that there is no pressure on the customer to come and collect their tickets at a stipulated time before the show.”

“They can book, choose their seats, pay for it all from their own home. They just have to remember their booking number to collect their tickets when they come.”

Of course, the phone booking still exists which is the usual bookings being done if you are not physically over the Times Cineplex counter. But then, you will have to be early before the movie starts to get hold of your movie tickets or you will risk your seats to those walk-in customers.

Benny also highlighted that there won’t be any refund when you buy it online but you will be able to replace your ticket with other schedules or movies of your preference if you happen to change your mind. This is a fair enough deal indeed.

So do follow the steps below or you can go straight to tutorial [click here].

Now you can pay your movie tickets online. Check out their website by clicking this image.

For new users, you will need a sign up first

Choose what movies you want to watch

You can choose for adults and/or kids

The payment gateway is made possible by Baiduri Bank

You will get this e-voucher in your email. So all you need to do is tell your Confirmation number over at the counter to claim your tickets 😀

Did you know that you can already purchase tickets for Captain America: Winter Soldier online at Times Cineplex. You can try out the payment online for the upcoming blockbuster which will only be screening by Thursday, 27th March. So now you can purchase your seats online with a piece of mind and collect your tickets even 5 minutes before your show. Of course, I won’t recommend you to do that since you will still have to queue up and the queues tend to get longer especially with blockbuster movies showing on the opening weekend.

Times Cineplex is also running a special gimmicks where customers can get a Free exclusive set of Captain America Metallic Foil stickers for every four tickets purchased per customer. This offer while stocks last but for those buying tickets online, you will have to physically go to the counter to collect the stickers as they are based on first come, first serve as in ticket collections. I will be catching Captain America in Singapore 😀
