I attended the UBD Street Shutters event last weekend and the event was part of the assessment for UBD students taking a final year course for Communication and the Creative Arts. It was held at Muti-Purpose Hall at UBD. As a guest, I was kinda expecting more from event itself because I’m into photography but there were a few missed opportunities such as the lacking of framed photography and even large scale photos. Instead there were only compilations of 5R photos that didn’t manage to grab my attention to an extent. Overall, it was still a great effort from the students. Last year was still better, in my opinion, with the Film Festival UBD and that had a little more impact.
UBD Street Shutters also had lucky draws for the delight of the attendees. The prizes were flight tickets to Thailand, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, sponsored by AIA BR – Kelvin Pong. There was also a photo competition organised by Interhouse Company (Canon) where first place Rahim Jamil received a Canon DSLR EOS 1200D, lens kit, Canon parcel and 8GB card. The two day event concluded last Sunday.

Chairman of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (Progresif), Hj Abu Bakar Hj Ibrahim, handing out certificates to a staff of PCSB for completing a nine-day training course while Paul Hyde, CEO of Progresif looks on. Image courtesy of Ridhwan Kamarulzaman of The Brunei Times.
Last year, b•mobile almost pull the plug and there were doubts among the staff with rumours circulating that the company will ceased its establishment. In comes Darussalam Assets Sdn Bhd and they turned things around and renaming b•mobile communications to Progresif Cellular while retaining the existing customers of b•mobile. It’s never an easy road to rise from a challenge and further they are up against a 20 year old establishment, their direct competitor DST.
Progresif Cellular have been investing their time in training their staff, improving the network infrastructure and even hiring suitable candidates to be part of the Progresif team. They have come up with great marketing campaign such as offering free calls from 8pm to 12am or even introducing FREE Sim Card for new subscribers. These gimmicks have paid off handsomely as according to the article from The Brunei Times that Progresif Cellular have new 8,000 subscribers. One of the reasons is due to the company’s willingness to waive the BND 25 fee for new registration. This information was disclosed by PSCB’s Chief Marketing Officer Devin Edwards and their approach paid off, hitting the “more price-sensitive customer segment”.
PCSB have also upped their network a few nights ago on certain areas. This shows that baby steps of being progressive will slowly pay dividends especially towards PCSB’s customers. Patience is the key and it’s good to see how the new management has turned the company around and restoring confidence slowly.
I have yet to subscribe for PCSB but then again, I don’t know if I want to carry two phones with me. Anyway, great good, PCSB. I’m already anticipating more progressive things to come from PCSB.
One of the reasons why Progresif have a high spike of new subscribers. This free calls also valid to other networks until 1st May 2015. Click image to enter Progresif’s Facebook Page.
The leading brand for water tanks in Brunei – LSL
If you go around many local household, there’s one brand that sticks to your mind when you see a water tank and that has the label “LSL”. Yes, we always take everything for granted when it comes to water supply but we forgot how important the water tanks are as well. The LSL water tanks have been around for decades and for me, if I was to trust a strong brand, it will be no other than LSL. I even paid a visit to their industrial area at Tanah Jambu and everything is fabricated from there. What’s great about LSL tanks are that they are stainless steel water tank.
Now do you know that not all water tanks that you see are top notch in terms of quality. You may come across different brands but we simply just assume that as long as it can store and pump water, it’s good enough for the household. Well, one thing for sure, you will never know if the type of tanks you used can be corrosive or even leakage. There are some cases also that fungus or algae might develop and this might not make water consumption drinkable or safe. With the LSL brand, you needn’t worry about all these issues as they have all the attributes to prevent these from happening.
I’m sharing you this story is because I became aware how much difference in quality even in water tanks and LSL stands at the top of the chain in terms of quality. Furthermore, the LSL water tanks have been around for 25 years. You can check out their Facebook page which is pretty active and or you can contact 2393200 or email us at metal@lsl.net. Do visit their showroom and factory at Salambigar industry area.

Francophonie Week coming soon
BIBD’s Wealth Management Unit (WMU) today, as part of its goal to raise awareness on the benefits of better financial management, delivered a financial planning talk to around forty personnel of the Ministry of Defence. The talk was delivered by BIBD’s own WMU Officer and Islamic Financial Planner, Rozielawati bti Hj Jamil.
One of the motives of these talks was to create awareness among the public on the advantages of current and future wealth management. This is also to support His Majesty’s Titah in conjunction with his birthday on 15th July 2006, “…additional revenue which will be received by the officers and employees of the Government, may be used prudently, while also trying to save through financial planning for future needs.”
Rozielawati started by asking what their financial goals were and commented that one of the basic strategies to achieving it was to manage and plan their finances properly. She continued that every individual will have different financial commitments and concerns throughout different stages of their lives.
She mentions, “When you’re single, you only pay for your personal commitments such as car financing, credit card and personal expenses. However, these commitments change when you get married and have children as you have to consider the expenses of your dependents, takaful/insurance plans, home financing, on top of your own personal commitments.”
Personnel from the Ministry of Defence attending a financial management talk from BIBD’s own Wealth Management Unit officer and Islamic Financial Planner
She also explained that financial commitments shift towards pre-retirement and retirement to include their retirement and medical plans. She also shared how to manage earnings with an ideal financial diet on top of TAP and SCP. An example of an ideal financial diet is to save a minimum of ten percent of basic salary for savings, a maximum of fifteen percent for car financing, a maximum of thirty-five percent for house financing, and a combined fifteen percent for personal financing and credit card.
“It is also recommended to have an additional fund which will only be used in case of any emergencies,” she added. This fund, she advised, should have a provision of at least three to six months of monthly expenses. She shared a few tips on how to maintain the emergency fund such as how to budget and allocate for a consistent monthly saving amount until the emergency fund amount for the account has been reached (the more the better). This includes setting up a standing instruction for periodic transfer of funds and to increase the fund amount to reflect any increments in earnings.
Additionally, she also discussed about their spending requirements during retirement with their old age pension of $250 and a minimum of $150 for SCP. Together they calculated how much they needed to save beforehand in order to live comfortably during their retirement days.
The talk ended with Rozielawati informing the participants on financial planning from an Islamic perspective, which included zakat and the distribution of wealth such as Islamic Will (Wassiyah), gift (Hibah), trust (Amanah) and endowment (Waqaf). To learn more about BIBD’s

Late post: I always enjoy the sound of music and a few weeks ago, I experienced a room filled with jazz music and soothing vocals. It was also the first time I saw Serunai Singers performing. I wish to see more of this in the future. Kudos to the team behind it in making an avenue to showcase their talents to music lovers like myself. Keep up the great work!! Just one thing though – make it slightly longer 😀 Thank you, Rebecca, for letting me know of the music showcase.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office graced the DPMM FC / S League Football Fanfare 2015 at the Jerudong Mini Stadium last Sunday.
His Royal Highness, who is also the Chairman of DPMM FC, joined the junior participants and the new import players for a group picture.
Among those participating was His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Muntaqim, who joined more than 100 junior participants in the technical training session during the DPMM FC / S League Football Fanfare 2015.
HRH Prince ‘Abdul Muntaqim also received a certificate of participation for the completion of the training session, which was conducted by DPMM FC’s head coach Steve Kean.
Also participating in the training session were the grandsons of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, YAM Pengiran Anak ‘Abdul Raqiib bin Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim and YAM Pengiran Anak ‘Abdul Haseeb bin Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim.

Fresh from completing the foreign quota with the arrival of new imports Craig Fagan, Brian McLean and Rafael Ramazzoti, the club is in its final week of preparation ahead of their first home game this season against Harimau Muda this Sunday, March 1.
The open training session attracted the participation of more than 100 junior footballers the majority of whom were from various schools and clubs that encourage youth development and promotion with the likes of Sports School and International School Brunei (ISB).
Kean revealed that he sees the young participants as potential players in the future adding that it only takes few hours to identify talent.
“We see these children today as potential players for us in the future. It was always nice for them to spend some time with the current players. We had a good response last year and this year was even better,” Kean said. “Certainly, in the few hours, you can identify some players that has potential to be professional players. It doesn’t take long to see the ones that got something special and we’ve seen lots of them today.”
The S League ‘Coach of the Year’ 2014 nominee was fairly impressed with the conduct and attitude shown by the junior players adding that the participants would return after a water break to learn about the other components linked with the technical aspects of the game.
“It was very warm today and the players asked that if they can have a little water break and after 10 minutes again they want to go back out and do something else. They were asking how this warm up, how we should warm down, and what type of stretching you should do. We mentioned a lot of injury prevention and they were asking if we can show them something. We showed that in the end and hopefully they can learn something”.
“It is about participation. If the young players can get enthusiasm and excitement today and wants to play football, it is not just about watching on TV. Hopefully they get what I would call the bug to play and that excitement never leaves you. If they can get a ball and practice at school, practice with a friend at school, after school, when they get a break at the weekends and as much contact with the ball and keep their skill level up, I’m sure they are some of those players who are here today that in the years to come would say that was the first time I decided to be a professional player”.
The objective of the training was to further comprehend the technical elements of the game for instance by controlling the ball not just by the stronger foot but also to work on a weaker foot. You’d never stop learning. Even the senior players like Joe Gamble, Craig Fagan and Bobby our captain, they’re learning and improving everyday”, added the head coach.
Meanwhile, Lim Chin, the Chief Executive Officer of S League commended DPMM FC’s initiative of building a fan base and encouraging active community participation and education through football.
“It is like a family concept and this is where we should build a fan base for each club through the children. The children can get to see up close and personal with the stars and besides just shaking hands and getting autographs, they are playing with the football stars”, Lim said.
“I think it is great to build up a fan and player relationship and DPMM FC did the right thing to hold a football fun fair on a beautiful Sunday morning”.
“I know the training is very short but I think what the children would remember that they learn the art of heading from this Brazilian player or he learnt dribbling from Azwan Ali. So when they see these players in action he remembers the half and hour sessions with them on that particular day. And maybe in time they (the club) can do more of this to engage with the fans”, Lim concluded.
Shortly after a certificate presentation to the participants, a souvenir was presented to the CEO of S League, Lim Chin as a token of appreciation by YAM Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim bin Pengiran Indera Mahkota Pengiran Anak Dr. Kemaluddin Al Haj, the Vice Chairman of DPMM FC. This will be another interesting contest. I remember last year I covering the Area Contest of Brunei Toastmasters where Chris Woo, a member of Brunei Speakers’ Club and Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club, made a name for our local club when he came top 9 in the International Speech Contest amongst 30,000 competitors. It was a huge milestone for Brunei Speakers’ Club. Reaching the world’s finals meant that he had to win in all six contests to reach to the finals – at club level, at Area level (to determine who will the Brunei representative), at Division Level, At District Level, then the semi-finals before they chose the top nine to the finals. So Chris Woo experienced to all those stages last year and it was something he didn’t expect.
Now the contest is back. However, Chris Woo decided not to contest but opted to mentor and guide other members especially for members in the newly chartered toastmaster club, UBD Toastmasters Club.
Tonight there will be an International Speech and Table Topics Contest for members of Brunei Speakers’ Club. The top two of each category will proceed to Area Level to be held at Multipurpose Hall, UBD on 8th of March.
I will be competing in both categories tonight and it’s one of the those nights where I normally get butterflies because I want to improve as a public speaker. I learnt so much from toastmasters as a speaker and as a leader and I am abided by their vision. Toastmasters gave me the perfect platform for my contribution to the community. I wish to all the contestants best of luck and the most important is let’s have fun and support one another. That’s the beauty of the contest.
Last Sunday, we witnessed great quality speakers especially from UBD students during the UBD Toastmasters Club’s International Speech and Tables Topics Contest. I am so used to young adults (generation) from Brunei Speakers’ Club but now because a new club has been chartered, what makes it more interesting and refreshing is that it’s a university club. This would mean young and energetic speakers and they had the most participants among all the clubs in Brunei Darussalam. Simply amazing!!
I applaud the president and founder of UBD Toastmasters Club, Reuben Chin, for his great leadership and aspiring the members to take the initiative to join the contest even though the club is not even a year old. All in all, they had 24 registered entries for both International Speech and Table Topics. Simply amazing!!
So peeps, let’s come support the contestants today for the Brunei Speakers’ Club contest, happening tonight at Seameo Voctech, Gadong and it starts at 7:30pm.

Matahari FC emerged as champions of the Standard Chartered Trophy 2015 Brunei local tournament and moved a step closer towards realising the dream of going to Anfield, the home ground of Liverpool FC in the United Kingdom.
Matahari will proceed to the regional tournament in Kuala Lumpur as a Brunei representative where only representatives from Malaysia and Thailand now stand in their path to qualification to Anfield, one of the most popular and historic stadiums in the world.
The winners ended Syah Kampong’s brave resistance with a 2-0 win in the final at the Indoor Stadium last weekend.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah presented the champions mock cheque and the individual prizes.

Mohd Asyramisyanie Kamis of Syah Kampong FC was awarded the Best Goalkeeper.
During the closing ceremony, a mock cheque of BND$2,400 was handed over to the Community Development Department (JAPEM) on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for the Humanitarian Fund of the Malaysian Flood Disaster. The funds was raised from registration fees collected from the participating teams, 100 per cent of which were donated.
Earlier, the quarterfinals of the Standard Chartered Trophy Brunei qualifying were contested with all group winners from the preliminary round in contention.
SLHM/Easyway, Syah Kampong, AMBD FC and Matahari FC all qualified to the last four while the quartet of HMD, Royal Origin FT, GG FT and OLSCB were eliminated. Mohd Asyramisyanie saved a penalty in the shoot-out to send his team to the final while Matahari’s solitary goal in the second semi-final was enough to confirm their place.

Curiousity still killed the cat
I finally made use of my Royal Skies and earning points for my travels. I should have done five years ago when I’m starting to frequently fly here and there. I was told that the Dreamliner for Royal Brunei will go to Singapore on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
The Brunei national netball team were also on the same flight as they will be competing in the Asian Netball Championship in Singapore. Good luck!!
This competition looks interesting and let’s see how our Brunei team will do.
The most talked about run in my instagram because of its novelty. It’s happening in Singapore on 1st November.
Caught up with Lily Chiam at Nana’s Cafe and they served awesome Maccha drinks and ice-cream
Del’s a happy camper when he purchased the Sandcrawler Star Wars Lego. Costs a fortune too 😀
Staying at this hotel for the 2nd time and liking it so far
Doing my blog here and I feel more imaginative in this kind of setting
Something that cinemas in Brunei should do and I’m sure this will be a big hit 😀
I’m devastated that my Sam the Tennis Machine is damaged *boohoo* I’ve spent a fortune on it of the love of tennis and so eager to play but it didn’t turn out as expected. I bought the machine from a newly found friend Kenny Chea who is another passionate tennis player and he already gave me a good deal for the machine.
I believe the machine was mishandled at the cargo area (either in Singapore or Brunei) and this must have caused the components to be faulty. The wires were disconnected and the batteries fell out from the deck. Oh well.. That’s partly me to blame for not double checking and making sure the box was probably handled with much care at the cargo area.
Now I’m back in Singapore and I brought the 22 kilo machine with me to be sent for repair. I wonder how much it will cost me but at this point of time, I just felt devastated. It’s like owning your first iMac but it just won’t start at the first attempt.
My tennis buddies are already too eager to play with the machine so I apologize for the delay due to this misfortunate event. We will get a taste of “Sam” but for now, let the humans do the work 😀
A month ago when I was testing out Sam the tennis machine and I was impressed. I bought the machine on the spot back in Singapore.
Fast forward a month later, it’s back in Singapore and I never got the chance to even play with the machine. It seems so troublesome to bring this heavy machine back to Singapore and I’m glad I didn’t have to pay excess baggage but still….
The components inside were not in placed and this must have been resulted from a huge impact during handling of the box. I’m yet to find out the cost repair for this.
Another event that I just missed today is the UBD Convocation 2014 which just took place at 9am today at the Chancellor Hall. I will definitely cover but just that I’m currently not in Brunei at the moment. It’s the biggest calendar of the year for UBD and it is very special as well since His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam present the certificates to all the graduates of UBD. Awesome!!
A big shout out to Ruebin Chin, Nina Kifwari, Rebecca, Jordine, Winnie Sia, Ismah Ismail, Alicia, Nadia and a few more. Any of you who wants to contribute their selfies, you can email to ranoadidas gmail 😀 Congratulations once again to all my friends. You have done our King and our country proud. Keep it up!!

It’s good to see such sporting events done by educational institution. I’ve seen Business School coming up with one last year if I’m not mistaken. Previous years, I remember UBD had a small run event as well. The event that I’m gonna blog about now is a running event done in a bigger scale and championed by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).
A few days ago, a “Green Pledge” was conducted at the UBD Campus as a curtain raiser for the UBD Green Run 2014 happening on 14th September 2014. The idea of the pledge is to raise awareness on UBD’s green initiative.
There was a short welcoming remarks by Dr Mohd Ayub Sadiq, UBD Assistant Vice Chancellor, who pledged to two things to raise awareness on green. Firstly, he will walk around the campus of UBD instead of driving back and forth and secondly, he will set his air condition to 28 degrees in his room. Both pledges he made will be carried out until the 14th September. He thanked all the sponsors and supporters involved – Armtrix Enterprise, Fitness Zone, Plus Magazine, Rentokil, Maju LSK Sdn Bhd, Greencity Concept Sdn Bhd and Goh Hock Kee Motors.
He praised the likes of Persatuan Mahasiswa UBD (PMUBD) and Alumni Guild for their close collaboration and support in organising the UBD Green Run and also not forgetting the all committee members and the 120 volunteers of the UBD Green Run 2014 for their unwavering support to host the UBD Campus Green Pledge.
The closing date for the UBD Green Run 2014 is Sunday 31st August 2014.
For more updates, do check out their instagram handle @ubdgreenrun or hashtag #ubdgreenrun or also their Facebook page.

RBAF Obstacle Course Challenge 2014
The Royal Brunei Armed Forces will be organising RBAF Obstacle Course Challenge 2014 which will be happening on 28th September 2014. This is the first of its kind and I was wondering myself when will Brunei come up with an obstacle race just like how Singapore has been conducting for the past few years. So it’s really good to see that such sporting event is being held in Brunei and I’m pretty sure the interest will be high. Furthermore, after posting the image on my instagram, there have been tons of tags and mentions to spread the awareness among their friends. So that’s a good sign to see the high level of interest on obstacle challenge race.
The venue of the event will be at Royal Brunei Air Force, Rimba from 0630 hours to 1200 hours. The distance for men will be 10km with 9 obstacles and the distance for women will be 5km with 4 obstacles. The registration fee will be $50 for public and $30 for RBAF personnel.

Last night, a commotion took place at The Mall at the ground floor. According to a witness, the man was running around and even pushed one of the person who was on duty, setting up a booth at the atrium area of The Mall. The guy was eventually taken into the custody of the police and escorted outside the building which I saw right after our Godzilla movie outing. Pierre Imhof, CEO of Baiduri Bank and Mr. Ti Eng Hui, Deputy CEO with members of the media. Taken from BT website.
An event I miss due to my DPMM FC coverage commitment. So here is the text taken from BT. Melodious songs from the 50s rang through the Mutiara ballroom of the Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam as Baiduri Bank Group celebrated its prestigious award-winning achievements with members of the local media yesterday.
Over 150 guests from various media agencies in the Sultanate as well as personnel from various government sectors such as Information Department and designing companies further vivified the dinner.
Attendees were treated to an evening of food, fun and exciting games such as sausage-eating, sundae-making, song-guessing, ball-shooting and best dress awards for both males and females.
For the lucky draw round, Fayezuana, a radio presenter from Kristal FM (KFM) bagged herself a Baiduri saving account with $2000 along with three others who brought home two iPad Minis as well as a Polaroid camera.
The rest of the guests did not go back home empty-handed as they receive instant dips.
Present during the dinner was Pierre Imhof, general manager of Baiduri Bank Group who delivered a welcoming remark thanking the local print media and television in Brunei Darussalam for their vital roles in disseminating information about their products and services to the public. “On behalf of Baiduri Bank Group, I would like to acknowledge you, the media, as a very important part of society, and as our partner in disseminating information about us to the public via your various channels,” he added. Also present at the event were Ti Eng Hui, deputy chief executive officer, as well as Dorothy Newn, head of Corporate Communication and Marketing. Text by Ikhwan Salleh of The Brunei Times.

One friend that I know of that doesn’t stop creating or recreating new ideas to reality is Keeran Janin. Our friendship goes all the way back to the era of the RA6 (a disbanded clique) in the mid 2000’s where he was under the employment of b-mobile communications.
If I look back at all the things he has done up to this very moment, I’m just truly amazed of the array of things that he was able to pull off even though some didn’t turn out be successful. He is a great iconic technoprenuer (IT entrepreneur) for the young ones as some of us don’t really like to deal with failure.
In my recent interview with Keeran Janin, he shared some of his successes and failures in his IT adventure including his recent trip to the Silicon Valley where Keeran stayed there for three weeks to meet up with the technopreneurs and angel investors.
I could tell that Keeran was high in energy during the interview and there was so much that he wanted to share on his US trip where he self-funded himself and took that leap of faith and just go all out to meet different walks of life at the Silicon Valley. Honestly, I love the vibrancy of the Silicon Valley and both Keeran and I traveled there once back in 2008 and it was a memorable one for us. This time, Keeran meant business and he is ready to swim with the big fish.
Three weeks in the US is not a cheap feat and Keeran was smart enough to use most of his resources such as air miles (for a subsidized flight) and cheaper means of accommodation so he could make most out of his Silicon Valley trip.
Keeran Janin on one of his tour during visit at San Francisco recently
Keeran Janin and his friend at Lombard Street
Now the question is why did he travel there again for such a longer period? Maybe, just maybe, Keeran kinda felt that he hit the jackpot with his new creation called Chrends (or #chrends) which actually means Chatrooms for trending topics. The IOS app was developed earlier this year under his new company Chrends Sdn Bhd and it is still in its beta platform but it has been garnering pace in terms of subscribers. So he felt it is time to meet the big shots in the US and see what road lies ahead of him.
If you remember the days of mIRC, #Chrends kinda falls in that category but in an app version with a sleek and modern feel to it. Basically you can create rooms or channels and chat with others anonymously without the need to sign up with your profiles. I’ve been using it for a month now and I follow the ongoing conversations on the main channel where people share their thoughts on local issues and so forth.
So Keeran’s trip in the US was to pitch his prototype (#chrends) idea to potential investors and angel investors. He traveled from one spot to another and ended up pitching to at least 30-40 investors. I kinda know how it works in the US. It’s totally different than Asia. Sometimes you could sell your idea in just matter of a minute or two and kabooom, you land yourself a jackpot and the investor will pump in money to fund your idea. In the US, things are much faster when it comes to decision making and sometimes the verbal agreements are on the spot before they get down to the formalities. Hence, it’s no surprise to why Keeran was taking a huge risk in his pitching adventure.
He was a bit tight-lipped about the outcome of his pitches but he hinted that he will reveal all pretty soon. But he did request for one thing is for us to download the #chrends app and do give feedback as that’s the most important ingredient for his app to tract more usage from subscribers.
Whether his trip was a success or not, the message here is that in life, everything is worth a shot. The experience itself will be self rewarding to say the least.

I just hope that this event Film Festival UBD will be a yearly event and this will give more platform for other talented, young film makers to showcase their talent on the screen. The turn out was excellent as the students overachieved their target in terms of audience reception. I believe they had more than 1,000 spectators in a span of two days with 8 times slots.

Suherdy Suli who is passionate of helping orphans being interviewed by The Brunei Times
Last Sunday, I had a quick pit stop at Silver Jubilee Park as Suherdy Suli organised a Healthy Kid’s Day for 40 orphans as it was part of the “Community Incubation Program” from Universiti Brunei Darussalam. The Healthy Kids’ Day is a social responsibility initiative as well, initiated by the students from the program. Its aim is to advance business ventures and accelerate the success for the 12 students/participants involved.
The Community Incubation Program is also known as community entrepreneurship village and it’s an ongoing program that goes on for five weeks. The participants will undergo mentorship on the road to entrepreneurship. So yesterday was one of the programmes highlighted in terms of social responsibility and they collaborated with Suherdy who searched high and low of orphans in Brunei and bring them more joy to their lives as well as creating new opportunities such as talent in creativity.
It was the first time I saw another art gallery under the flagship of Rainforest Gallery (previous located at Kiulap). There’s a small building area at the Silver Jubilee Park and it opens every day except for Mondays. So some of the kids did their colouring activities within the premise and outside as part of the Healthy Kid’s Day activities.

During the interview, Chris gave some encouragement to the students, “We will make history if you can guys can do it as this is the first film festival in Brunei Darussalam. Of course, the students didn’t know what they got themselves into and now I just so proud of them. Everything they did themselves. I did push along and made a path for them but everything else was from them – finding sponsors, learn how to do lights, try to do 3D design and sketches for the event and they did it on their own.”
He said that this was part of an assessment for their module and it will account to 10% of the event itself. The rest of the marks will be based on peer and team assessment and there are no exams for this module.
Chris hopes that this event can be spur off to new things and even being endorsed by Universiti Brunei Darussalam as an annual event due to its success and also a good avenue to expose our local creative industries.

The dugong carcass at Tungku Beach. Image taken by Rafidah Hamit of The Brunei Times
The carcass of an unidentified sea animal believed to be that of a dugong is still at Tungku Beach, six days after it was reported to the Wildlife Division.
When The Brunei Times visited the site yesterday, there was already a foul smell emitting from the remains of the carcass. On closer inspection, it was found that most of the flesh was destroyed. More maggots and flies were seen to be devouring the carcass. Curious onlookers also stopped to look at it.
Hj Faisal Hj Nordin, an officer from the Wildlife Division told The Brunei Times that they had sent a team down to the beach to investigate the remains but could not ascertain the cause of death.
They were also unable to determine whether it was a dugong or a seal. “This is because we do not have a mammal expert. After the investigation, we just left the carcass there to naturally decompose,” Hj Faisal said. He declined to provide further details on the matter. Leaving carcasses that have been washed up ashore to decompose naturally is not uncommon.
In December 2012, a young whale measuring 40 feet long was found on a beach in Malibu — the carcass had disintegrated to such an extent that it was no longer feasible to tow it out to sea. According to an article by The Guardian, authorities had said that the condition of the whale’s carcass made it physically difficult to be moved. “It’s so embedded in sand that they won’t be able to get it out. The body will be pulled apart,” the authorities were reported as saying. The carcass of the sea animal at Tungku Beach measured at about six feet in length. The wildlife authority in Brunei urges the public to report any findings related to wildlife animals to them by calling 2774258, or emailing info-wildlife@industry.gov.bn or by contacting them through the Facebook. Pierre Imhof, CEO of Baiduri Bank (center) with Mr. Ti Eng Hui, Deputy CEO of Baiduri Bank and Pg Azaleen Pg Dato Mustapa, Head of Treasury of Baiduri Bank during the press conference yesterday
This reminds me of math days in high school years. I’m never a fond of math subject but if I dedicate myself to it, I will do just fine, nothing more. Recently, Baiduri Bank has reached another milestone in the banking industry. In a banking environment especially Brunei which has been undergoing through many regulatory measures, banks in Brunei have to step up their game and be more “creative” in meeting customers’ demand and also falling in line with the rules and regulations which have been stricter.
So it’s great to see that Baiduri Bank has been given an impressive rating of “BBB+/A- 2” by an international rating agency, Standard & Poor’s. It was published in Bloomberg that Baiduri Bank has a “strong” business position, “adequate” capital and earnings, “moderate” risk position, “average” funding and “strong” liquidity.
In most cases, such rating will remain unchanged for the next 12-18 months and it’s very unlikely it will suffer a drop and Baiduri Bank ensures that they will sustain that rating and even better the current rating. Of course, this is a long term goal of Baiduri Bank and being it only 20 years old, this is considered a great achievement and also given the tough regulatory measures that the Brunei banking industry have to go through.
Such rating positions Baiduri Bank just below well known banks such as DBS, OCBC and UOB in Singapore which shows the great credibility of Baiduri Bank.
Pierre Imhof, CEO of Baiduri Bank, hosted a press conference with the presence of Mr. Ti Eng Hui, Deputy CEO of Baiduri Bank and Pg Azaleen Pg Dato Mustapa, Head of Treasury of Baiduri Bank. Imhof shared that the policy on lending will remain the same as it has been one of Baiduri Bank’s important and successful product due to its dynamic nature. With more healthy liquidity of Baiduri Bank, there are in a good position to lend more and maintain their lending policy.
Imhof also shared that the bank will be looking for opportunities regionally in the near future. He is proud that Baiduri Bank has been given the BBB+ ranking and this will indeed give more confidence internally and also to their loyal customers. Congratulations, Baiduri Bank, on your milestone.

The students have work tremendously well for their assignment. Kudos to them and I salute you guys!!
The time is almost near. The Film Festival UBD 2014 is just around the corner and I can’t wait to see some of the short films done by UBD students and this is part of their assessment too. This is similar to the UBD Spectacle 2014 project (oops, I really have to pay them a visit too). There will be 8 short films in different forms of genre involving 20 students majoring in the field of Professional Communications and The Media.
So you will witness some of the innovative content the students muster in a short span of time. I was already impressed with the short films done last year by the students and I, myself, am a big fan of movies and I always love to talk about direction and film editing when it comes to movies. Of course, this is why The Popcorn Panel came about where you can catch my audio podcast on movies that I watch every now and then.
If want to read more of the in-depth objectives of the Film Festival UBD 2014, you can click here.
By the way, the tickets you can get them half an hour before the show and it’s FREE. It will take place at The Core at UBD. There are quite number of slots you can choose from to catch the 8 short films. You can see the synopsis from their Facebook page too. There will be 5 UBD made production and 3 local house production in all.
On Saturday 19th April, the timings will be 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm while on Sunday 20th April, it will start on 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm. So if you have the time, do make the time. One of the short films that I enjoyed last year was “Roast Lamb” and it will be one of the short films to be featured. You can follow them also on instagram @filmfestivalubd2014
