Who says that Brunei has nothing to offer especially during the holiday period? According to Yang Mulia Awang Wardi bin Hj Mohammad Ali, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Tourism), Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, there are plenty of events to look forward to and not necessarily those who are traveling during the holidays will be away for the whole of December. Hence there are enough activities for the residents of Brunei Darussalam to enjoy from late November to December 2017.

Yesterday marked the launch of the www.brunei.events, a portal and application for tourism services for the general public as well as incoming tourists to be aware of any events in Brunei Darussalam. So what kind of events will be posted? There will be events such as roadshows, exhibitions, conferences, cultural activities, festivals and workshops. Just imagine it as the Time Out version of Brunei Darussalam.

The portal which will be available soon for mobile apps is a collaboration with Brunei Tourism Board, Progresif Cellular and Mixmediaworx.

The official launch took place at the Tourism Information Centre, Galeri Sini at the Royal Wharf and it was graced by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism.

Some of the main events lined up for December includes Brunei Film Blitz, Brunei E-Sports Tournament, Muslim Youth Camp, The Alpha Race, The Autofest, The Superwoman Run, Spotlight finals, Larian Festival Seni Belia Diri 2017, International Food Fair and not to forget the Bandarkuceria in all districts.

Wardi highlighted that this will be a yearly calendar for the upcoming Brunei December Festival. He hopes the objective of this event is to spur the growth of international tourist arrivals to Brunei Darussalam and also by having a yearly event, this will hope for a repeat participation from current vendors. Having these events in Brunei will also help to stimulate the domestic growth within the economy.

After coming off against two tough opponents, Singapore (37-62) and host Malaysia (64-27) in the netball competition, Brunei Darussalam’s netball team bounced back for a victory over Philippines 69-32 yesterday. The win over Philippines made a good chance for them to qualify for the semi-finals berth.

Philippines struggled to score and gave too many turnovers to their opponents while Brunei capitalised on every attacking opportunity. Nur Hafizah Hj Abdul Sidek who was rested during the first half, came on and led the team in the scoring department.

Athiyyah As’ad Mohd Jaafar, the vice-captain, competing in her second SEA Games, said she looked forward for their next opponent Thailand today (Thursday, 17th August). Their last meeting was back in Singapore 2015 in the SEA Games and Brunei lost by 5 points to Thailand. Today it will be a different story as Brunei wants to better their effort and what a best time to do it today at Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara.

A win against Thailand will put them in a favourable position in the semi-finals and hope for a push in the finals.

Good luck to the netball team and hope to see you pretty soon this weekend 😀

Lukaku impresses

Impressive start for Lukaku as a Red Devils

The hits and misses. It’s good to see the Premier League back in action and I only managed to catch two matches, bits and pieces as the TV coverage at the hotel in Medan was not as intensive as the ones on Astro. Nonetheless, I have my livescore to keep me up to date with the scores.

I know I would have expected Lukaku to perform well under Jose Mourinho and wow, did he just deliver a brace for his new club against West Ham United and finished with a convincing 4-0 scoreline. A team definitely to look out for and I only had Antonio Valencia of Manchester United as my only MU player in my Fantasy League. I’m still have that he earned points for having a clean sheet effort despite being cautioned.

The other players that succeeded in my first week are Sadio Mané and Álvaro Morata where both scored in the opening round. The only irony was that both teams failed to win their respective matches and the only consolation goes to Liverpool for drawing 3-3 while Chelsea suffered a shocking defeat at home to Watford 3-2. Don’t play-play ah especially under rated teams.

Other than Michael Keane of Everton being a good performer for my fantasy league, the rest of my players under performed.

Then again, it’s only the first week and still many points to play for.

The Premier League seems exciting once again as there are plenty of favourites to lift the trophy. Chelsea is still the team to beat regardless of the opening defeat. They will bounce back in a nick of time and let’s hope they give a good run in the top 4 spot.

The only that has been more than encouraging is Manchester United. Pogba is starting to enjoy much freedom as newly signed Matic is able to cover the gaps in midfield and giving Pogba more room to attack.

It was also great to see Rooney on the scoreboard too as he re-united with his old club Everton who narrowly beat Stoke FC. It shows that Rooney can still contribute to the fast paced Premier League.

The big hoohaa now is the negotiations between Coutinho and Liverpool club. Of course, I wouldn’t want to let this opportunity go as in keeping Coutinho for Liverpool as it is their best chance to be contending for the title.

Who are my predictions for the top 4? It will be another close fight now among defending champions Chelsea, Manchester City and maybe just maybe Manchester United. Liverpool will still be aiming for a top 4 finish with the squad they have (no offense) while Arsenal and Spurs could be fighting for the Champions League spot.

I’m hoping to see another “Leicester” in the Premier League. It will just add more dimension to an already challenging league. I’m also hoping to score at least 70 points in the EPL Fantasy League.

Jurumas dethrones Easyway

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in Social News, Sports

Jurumas – Champions of MK Group Cup 2017

Easyway, Easyway. Easy way. It was supposed to read three-peat in the headlines but it was not meant to be. Defending champions Easyway was dethroned by Juramas convincingly 113-99 in the final of the MK Group Cup aka Sultan’s Cup 2017 last Sunday.

Avery Scharer has been the man on fire in the tournament along with Justin Howard, both imports from Easyway. The former champions recorded the biggest scoring margin in the tournament when they beat CK & Associates 152-35 in the group stage. Avery even reached triple double scores during the semi-final game last Friday while Justin has been dominant on the boards averaging at least 20 rebounds and in the range of 30s for the points.

However, their efforts of 37 points (Justin) and 32 points (Avery) were not enough to topple the cohesive unit of Jurumas. Their opponent steamrolled in the first quarter and rushed to a 7-2 lead to set the pace. Even when Easyway found their way back to the game, Jurumas was very consistent in their field goal conversions.

It was not surprised that Jurumas closed the first quarter with a healthy lead of 36-24. It was the locals playing for Jurumas that made the difference. Efu (Aik Hock) and Esmond Tan had a very cohesive partnership while on court. The efficient Efu made some steals and created fast breaks which were converted successfully by Esmond.

The second quarter was a chance for Easyway to come back. They have the squad and the experience to do so. However, Jurumas’ game plan worked defensively. Easyway gave away too many turnovers and if I looked back now, this was the defining moment as Easyway couldn’t muster a comeback even with their depth of squad and experience. At half time, the score was 63-44 to Jurumas, thanks to Udun Osakue, Esmond and Efu combo.

Efu (Aik Hock) of Jurumas was instrumental in their defence

Avery Scharer of Easyway has been dominating the scoring charts and still continued his dominance in the finals but it wasn’t enough

1st Runner up – Easyway

2nd Runner up – YTE

Half time performance

The introduction of Geve Leones from the Easyway bench didn’t pay off. I truly admire him when he was on court a few years ago. He did his best last Sunday but couldn’t bring back same flair he had back then. He suffered a bad fall after clashing with Benjamin Lim in the final quarter but it wasn’t serious as it looked.

Coming to the 3rd quarter, I was hoping for a comeback, a miracle as I never liked a one-sided game. I wanted to see a competitive fight. I even heard that Avery changed back to this Kobe sneakers and sported a head band after half time. Who knows if that could changed things around.

The script remained the same as Jurumas maintained their tempo on the court. I was hoping to see more of the young talent Marcus on the court after missing many minutes in the first half. Appeared he did and he managed to get on the score board. Darren Chai was introduced to mark Udun but he had an ineffective defensively display against the on-form Udun. He was replaced after receiving two personal fouls in a space of a few minutes.

Carl Montgomery, another import of Jurumas, shined in the second half. He kept winning offensive rebounds and converting them along the way. His counterpart Justin Howard was struggling to cope with the pace and made it easy for Jurumas to win offensive rebounds.

I knew Easyway’s fate was sealed after the end of the third quarter as the score board read Jurumas 95 Easyway 73. Who could have predicted that scoreline? I was expecting a close fight. While Easyway imports still made an impressive scores, it was their local team mates that couldn’t deliver on the offensive. The locals including Geve Leones, Francis and Marcus Quirk combined only 30% of the points contributed where as Jurumas’ local players contributed 40% to the final score.

Udun Osakue of Jurumas was named MVP after scoring a game high 38 points while his team mate Carl Montgomery mustered 31 points. Esmond Tan was the highest local scorer with 18 points followed by Lim Liang Wei with 12 points.

It is back to the drawing board for Easyway to reflect back what went wrong in the finals. They may have dominated the tournament with their offensive display and high scoring games but it was Jurumas who earned the bragging rights as the champions of the Sultan’s Cup 2017.

Well done to Jurumas for their cohesive team work especially in defence. You deserved to be champions.

I would also like to thank Brunei Basketball Association especially Wira and coach Dragon for the info, logistics and hospitality. The event was well organised and I could see improvements from previous years. There are still room for improvements but this is already a good start. Keep it up!!!

Finally a hole-in-one at Baiduri Masters 2017

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in bank, Sports

Dato Paduka Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar strike a hole-in-one and walked away with BND 20,000 on the 4th day of Baiduri Masters 2017

In what has turned out to be a spectacular start to the second weekend of golf, the Baiduri Masters 2017 saw Dato Paduka Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar ace hole 12 to snag the $20,000 cash prize. He became the fifth ever golfer to strike a hole-in-one in the 22 year history of the Baiduri Masters and the second ever golfer to walk away with the $20,000 cash prize. Kahar Bakar was the first golfer to walk away with the $20,000 cash prize in 2015.

Under sub-optimal conditions for a round of golf, DP Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, with luck on his side and armed with his trusty Maruman Majesty 9-iron, struck his Titleist NXT No. 1 ball at 5pm which bounced on the green and rolled straight into the cup.

A hole-in-one prize works on the premise that if there is more than one winner, the prize will be shared among the winners.  As such, DP Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar will have to wait until the end of the tournament this Sunday to know if he is the outright winner of the $20,000 cash prize.

By the end of today’s session, the Top 16 Leaderboard saw a lot of movement with the addition of five new contenders: Khairul Khamis, Irfan Rahman, Kalali Hj Munchit, Hj Khairul Jamaluddin and Dennis Koh.

Suhaimi Ibrahim took the top spot with an impressive score of 69. He improved his previous score by 3 strokes and moved up 4 places. Tied for second, third and fourth are Ahmad Yani Hj Md Noor, Pg Hj Ahmad Zaki, and Seruji Hj Setia with a gross of 71.
