Manhattan Fish Market opens in Brunei

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in lifestyle, food, Social News

The official launch with the ribbon cutting with the master franchise and the guest of honour, the Malaysia High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam last weekend

I dined in twice at Manhattan FISH MARKET and I quite like it. I’m familiar with the franchise after my first try in Singapore a few years ago. It was just a matter of time before it made to Brunei market, considering the number of franchises that have been popping up in Brunei Darussalam.

Last week on 15th February, the Manhattan FISH MARKET finally had their official launch. For the record, it is an award-winning casual dining restaurant specializes in American style seafood, offering a wide variety of lip-smacking products ranging from Manhattan Fish n’ Chips to Garlic Herb Mussels and not forgetting their signature dish the legendary Manhattan Flaming Seafood Platter, an ideal dish for seafood lovers.

Manhattan FISH MARKET (Brunei) is managed by Nutrafood Resources Sdn Bhd which owns the franchise rights for Brunei market and they are confident of the brand’s success and hinted that there will be two more outlets in the Sultanate.

Fishy Chicky Bang Bang. It’s fish and chicken served in cheesy sauce. This is a popular dish among patrons in Brunei.

Ice cream served with friend oreos.. Interesting combo 😀

Manhattan FISH MARKET’s concept for fresh and flavourful seafood goes back over 180 years ago, with its inspiration drawn from the famous Fulton Fish Market located in Manhattan, USA. Patrons who step into the warmth restaurant are pleasantly greeted by its décor evoking a deeply rooted sense of the historical market and original inspiration with a contemporary touch.

I was privileged to be invited for the launch of Manhattan FISH MARKET last week and we were treated to a gastronomical feast in a 5 course meal. Yummy!!!

I’m honestly impressed with the quality of the dishes and I hope they can remain consistent in this competitive market (in the F&B industry).

The buzzing pasar

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam made a surprise visit the day after the official launch. It was a great gesture by His Majesty the Sultan and unlike other countries, our Sultan loves to connect with the people of Brunei, up close and personal. Image courtesy of @queennajmina

After many shifting and relocating, this looks to be a permanent spot for Pasar Gadong or what they call “Pasar Pelbagai Barangan Gadong”. Yea, it’s kinda of a long name but many of us are used to Pasar Gadong.

You will be surprised to how much the vendors are now paying as compared to before. Previously they will fork out as much as $300 to $400 per month. Now with a better set up and proper facilities, the vendors are only paying less than $40 per month which is a real steal.

The new facilities is a gift from His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

These have been an ongoing problem for the market vendors since last year due to the reallocation. Hence now the problem have been solved with the support and involvement of the Brunei Government.

It has a proper shelter, high roofing, spacious and well built. I believe LSL contributed in this project (from what I heard). Perhaps there was one minor thing and that’s the smoking vents. I’m not sure if it’s working or not but some parts were smokey. Well, it’s just a minor thing but I hope it can be looked into.

It was great to know that some entrepreneurs were given micro-credit from DARe (Darussalam Enterprise) where they received finance to help move their businesses.

It was also a great sight to see His Majesty the Sultan making a surprise visit at the newly established Pasar Pelbagai Barangan and toured the premises. His Majesty was the favourite among the crowd where selfies became a common thing. Sellers and vendors also took the opportunity to thank His Majesty in person.

The Pasar Pelbagai Barangan was officially launched last week by Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.

The refurbishment of the market was done under the Julangan Titah Project, an initiative of the Office of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Let’s hope this will boost the economy for Brunei and make this one of the attractions for foreigners and tourists alike. I’ve already been there twice and I’m impressed. Just make sure we keep the place nice and clean and be grateful to His Majesty the Sultan in providing such facilities for vendors.

Burger King outlet No.7

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in lifestyle, food

His Excellency Craig Allen US Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam had the privilege to launch the latest outlet of Burger King (Brunei) at Kiulap. Guess what? His Excellency used to be an employee of Burger King back in the US 40 years ago. Interesting.

He was also happy to see the growing number of franchises in the Brunei economy as this will help to stimulate the SMEs growth in Brunei Darussalam as these are priorities of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

He hoped that there will be more variety of industry in the franchise category, for instance, professional services and such as we don’t have that much or any in Brunei Darussalam. It could be in the field of beauty salon or plumbing or automative.

Present during the launch of the 7th Burger King outlet were Burger King (Brunei) Director Pg Hashim bin Pg Jaya and Deno Goh, Operations Director of Burger King (Brunei).

Also during the launch, Burger King also unveiled their latest menu – Golden Nacho Burger and it comes in beef or chicken. My preference is definitely the Golden Nacho Cheese Beef.. Yummy…

Do check out the latest Burger King outlet in Kiulap. They even have an upper floor where there is a small play area for children.

The Potato Habit experience

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in food, Social News

Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Abdul Rashid bin Pengiran Kerma Raja Pengiran Haji Kamarulzaman (2nd from left) with Che Soon Chong, Danial Isa Kalebic, the partner and manager of The Potato Habit and Benny Lau at the soft launch of The Potato Habit yesterday

YB Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim (far right side) with family members and friends came for the launch and blessed the ceremony with a prayer.

At first I thought it was an international franchise. But their family side is known for creating local brands when it comes to food & beverage. You all may be familiar with household names such as Fratini’s and Mr. Softy and they have been around to make their strong presence in Brunei Darussalam. Now comes a new F&B brand called The Potato Habit.

Led by a young dynamic team came up with the concept and the idea came when they were flying abroad. After some sampling, they came up with 6 flavours as their first phase of the menu. The flavours are Original Cheese, Cheese and Butter, Spicy BBQ, Seaweed, Sour Cream & Onion and Sweet corn. Apparently according to Danial, the most popular one off the menu is Seaweed.

My favourite is the BBQ flavour. The portions are quite generous too even for a Baby Size ($2). They have 5 sizes from Baby Size to Family Size ($6). So if you ask me, it’s a real steal.

Daniel shared how they are also planning for expansion in the near future (sometime in March/April 2017). As of today, he was happy with the responses even with the lack of promotion. The business has been operating for a week and yesterday was the official opening of The Potato Habit.

Present during the launch were Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Abdul Rashid bin Pengiran Kerma Raja Pengiran Haji Kamarulzaman and YB Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim, the grandfather of Danial Isa-Kalebic.

The Potato Habit is located at the ground floor of Times Square Shopping Centre, near Killiney Road. You can follow them on instagram @thepotatohabit or just search #flavouringyourworld to check them out. I highly recommend their fries as they are pretty addictive for some reason. Happy devouring 😀

2,000 burgers gone in 3 hours

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in food, Social News

The earlier customers yesterday at McDonald’s Gadong

An efficient queueing system deployed

What a successful event yesterday at McDonald’s outlets Gadong and Jerudong Drive-Thru yesterday!! All the 2,000 Egg McMuffin with Chicken Roll burger were all done by 9ish am.

I made a two hour visit to Gadong outlet and watched the crowd trickling in. What I am impressed is the queue control. So you won’t see loads of crowd rush especially when collecting coupons.

This was part of the National Breakfast Day hosted by McDonald’s and Brunei is one of the latest country to be part of this initiative.

There were a lot of youth, students and even families that showed up yesterday. It’s also a good reminder to all that McDonald’s is open from 7am for breakfast. According to Noor Hafila Salleh, Marketing Executive of McDonald’s Brunei.

Well done to McDonald’s Brunei on introducing this finally to the locals. Let’s hope for another round next year 😀
