Cuckoo Brunei turns one

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in community, healthy, lifestyle

Congratulations to the Cuckoo team for reaching their milestone during their 1 year anniversary held at V-Plaza Hotel

The management and the driver behind Cuckoo Brunei

Korean leading home appliance brand Cuckoo celebrated their first-year anniversary. The event was attended by Counselor Lee, Embassy of the Republic of Korea as well as overseas partners from Cuckoo International Malaysia.

“Thanks to the company’s strong and dedicated team as well as customers’ trust, we managed to achieve this milestone of over 2,500 customers,” said Wong Kim Guan, Managing Director of Cuckoo International (B) Sdn Bhd.

Despite being a young company, Cuckoo has been very bold in its bid to become an even more competent company, he added.

In celebration of this achievement and also to continue its commitment in providing the best products to all Bruneians, the company is rolling out its latest product, Cuckoo C Model Air Purifier with Plasma Ioniser.

The new product, C Model Air Purifier, worth $990 is equipped with built-in air cleanliness indicator and Room Care Air Purifier Technology. From as low as $49 a month, as well as to enjoy the full range of Cuckoo’s signature services.

With the new rental plan for air purifier – including a C Model air purifier, filters, periodical maintenance service performed by Cuckoo Natural Doctors every four months, and warranty – subscribers will have the freedom to choose a package with a rental contract period that is best tailored to their individual needs.

“The new C Model rental plan is another step forward in Cuckoo’s mission to ensure that every Bruneian household would have access to air purifiers”, said Cuckoo International (B) Sdn Bhd, Managing Director Wong Kim Guan.

“We will continue to provide better products and plans with even greater affordability and flexibility that will cater to the needs of every consumer, and help them create a healthy home for their family.”

Cuckoo also took the opportunity at the event to unveil the launch of Natural Doctresses, which will be responsible for servicing the water purifiers and changing the filters after every four months. During service, Cuckoo Natural Doctresses are required to perform the 15-point check, which includes sterilizing the water tank and faucet with a high-pressure steamer, and changing of the filter. Customers can keep track of the procedures by using the Cuckoo Natural Care Service 15-point check card.

Cuckoo is the first company in Brunei that uses high-pressure steamer to clean the water tank, and on top of servicing the water purifier, Cuckoo Natural Doctresses are also more than happy to sterlise the kitchen sink and chopping board for free. This is because Cuckoo believes that servicing staff should always be focused on the task at hand to ensure that only the best service is given to the customers.

Cuckoo is the leading home appliance brand in South Korea, specialising in water purifiers, air purifiers and pressure multi-cookers.

Rano’s thoughts: I have a Cuckoo Icon at my pantry so far and I’m loving it so far after 5 months of usage. It provides me both hot and cold water and yes, it’s a water purifier. I’m not too driven on alkaline water like other companies are doing and all Cuckoo provide is a mild alkaline, clean water. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is a first in & out Electrolysis Sterlisation System and a touch panel with mood light. It has four filters with 6 stage of filtration. You can be rest assured that the water is being purified to its best.

The best part of being a Cuckoo customer is the after sales service they provide. They would pay a visit every four months to change the filters and service my Icon machine to tip top condition. This quarterly service alone has brought confidence to the customers and newer ones and this is a big reason why Cuckoo is doing quite well in Brunei, considering it’s only been one year old.

So what are you waiting for? Get yourself a Cuckoo 😀

Jollibee No.15

The Chickenjoy toasts in opening the 15th outlet of Jollilbee in Brunei Darussalam earlier this morning

Dennis Flores, Vice-President, International Operations (Europe, Middle East & Australia) Jollibee Foods Corporation delivering his welcoming remarks and the milestone of Brunei Darussalam for Jollibee’s success

Finally the 15th store is officially opened in Brunei Darussalam. I am referring to Jollibee in Brunei Darussalam. You will be surprised that Jollibee in Brunei is more popular than other regional countries other than their home country, the Phillipines. Imagine this, Indonesia only has one outlet, Singapore has only 4 outlets, Hong Kong has only two while Malaysia has no more Jollibee outlets. The other SEA country that loved Jollibee is Vietnam with 80 outlets and counting.

So it’s safe to say that Jollibee hits the Brunei’s taste and it has been an ongoing success since it’s inception in 1987. My favourite meal from Jollibee then was the nasi lemak.. yummy… and also Jollibee’s chunky chicken burger 😀 Now both items are not available anymore in our Brunei market.. Boohoo. Hence, my favourite meal now is the spicy chicken with rice and my all time favourite Chocolate Sundae.

Enough of my ramblings about the past on Jollibee. I’m impressed that the popular franchise has been sustaining its presence for 30 years in Brunei. That’s longer than any other franchise that I know of. None of the competitors come close to the longevity of Jollibee in Brunei.

This morning the 15th outlet, perhaps the best design of the lot in Brunei, opened its door to the public and it’s located at Brunei International Airport.

The official opening was done gracefully with the presence of many – His Excellency Meynardo LB Montealegrer, Ambassador of The Philippines to Brunei Darussalam, Dennis Flores, Vice-President, International Operations (Europe, Middle East & Australia) Jollibee Foods Corporation., Abdul Razak bin Mohammad Hassan, grandson of Pehin Orang Kaya Ratna Setia Dato Setia Hj Awang Abdul Hapidz, Jollibee Franchisee Brunei, Muhammad Emmy Shamdy Khairul Kadir, Acting Deputy Director of Civil Aviation.

Also gracing the presence were Mr. Rodel Alcantara, AVP & Market Head for Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia & Europe, Jollibee Foods Corporation, Christina Ward, Operations Head of Jollibee (Brunei), Roilan Alvarez, Group Manager and Hj Md Shukry bin Hj Md Yusuf, first local restaurant manager in Jollibee (Brunei).

The airport outlet was unveiled by noon today and as usual, there was a long queue prior to the opening of the 15th outlet.

Congratulations once again to Jollibee Brunei for their milestone. Let’s spread more JOY to Brunei after 30 years and running. Thank you 😀

Meet the Mercedes-AMG 43 family

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in community, automative, Social News

A LINEUP OF SUPERSTARS. A FAMILY OF THOROUGHBREDS.

"
Happening today

From the creators of the 45, 63 and 65 model lines comes MercedesAMG 43, eight high performance vehicles with AMG pedigree were introduced at Mercedes-Benz Autohaus, Beribi, yesterday. Fitted with numerous AMG enhancements, every vehicle screams “Drive me,” because in the AMG family, performance is king. From coupes and sedans to SUVs and roadsters, the power and handling of the 43 lineup beckon to the world’s most passionate drivers. All that’s left to do is grip the wheel and press the accelerator.

The 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine provides impressive performance with its 270 kW (367 hp) maximum power and peak torque of 520 newton metres: sprinting from rest to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, its speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h. The newly developed front axle, the taut elastokinematics and the highly precise steering make a substantial contribution to the agile driving experience.

The highlights
• 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine with modified engine control unit, increased boost pressure and far higher dynamics and high-revving
• 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with double-declutching function when shifting down and exhilaratingly short response times in “Sport Plus” mode
• AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive with rear-biased torque distribution of 31 to 69 percent (front axle to rear axle)
• AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with adaptive variable damping in three stages, mode can be selected via button, adopted from MercedesAMG 63 series
• AMG DYNAMIC SELECT switch for dynamic, individually selectable driving experience with five drive modes and AMG-specific parameterisation
• Three-stage Electronic Stability Program ESP®
• Front axle with newly developed steering knuckles and load-bearing joints on the spring link. Elastokinematic adjustments to the links have been adopted from the Mercedes-AMG 63 series
• Rear axle with elastokinematics tailored to higher driving dynamics
Large braking system with internally ventilated compound brake discs, perforated at the front with a diameter of 360 mm, and with a diameter of 320 mm at the rear

AMG-specific: the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine
The new 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is part of the BlueDIRECT engine family from Mercedes-Benz. Technical advances including a modified boost pressure allowed the AMG engineers to increase the engine’s power output and torque as well as its dynamism and flexibility to typical AMG levels. With 270 kW (367 hp) and 520 Nm, the V6 engine sets new standards in its segment. The NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder liners is also used in the Formula One engines of MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS. Especially tough and, therefore, wear-resistant, this coating also reduces friction, thereby contributing to higher efficiency. The AMG powerplant can be identified by the red aluminium insert in the engine cover.

Short shift times, high efficiency: 9G-TRONIC
The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is especially matched to the demands of the Mercedes-AMG 43. Thanks to the model-specific software application, the AMG developers managed to reduce substantially the shift times of the 9-speed transmission. The multiple downshift allows even faster short bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” transmission modes makes for an even more emotive driving experience. Defined ignition adjustments also provide faster gearshifts in the “Eco” and “Comfort” modes.

“Manual” mode can be enabled by pressing a button on the centre console. The gear changes are based on the selected transmission mode, and the driver can now change gear using the paddles on the steering wheel. Moreover, the transmission stays in the selected gear and does not automatically shift up when the engine speed reaches the limit.

Rear-biased and agile: AMG Performance 4MATIC
The standard-fit AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive combines optimum traction, hallmark AMG vehicle dynamics and maximum driving pleasure. The system features a rear-biased torque distribution of 31 percent to the front axle and 69 percent to the rear axle. This arrangement ensures greater vehicle dynamics and higher lateral acceleration on the road as well as improved traction as it uses the dynamic shift in the axle load toward the rear axle that occurs during acceleration to deliver more drive torque to the rear. A multi-disc clutch with a locking effect of 50 Nm guarantees that the frictional connection potential of all four wheels is exploited to the full. On road surfaces with different levels of grip, the all-wheel drive responds with targeted brake application on one wheel in order to also guarantee optimum traction in such instances.

India 71st Independence Day

Written by Rano Iskandar on . Posted in community, Social News

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education and his spouse with Her Excellency Nagma Mohamed Mallick, the Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam and her spouse graced India 71st Independence Day celebration at The Empire Hotel & Country Club last night

A momento from the India High Commission to the guest of honour

I was honoured to be part of India’s 71st Independence Day celebration held at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Hotel & Country Club last night. A big thank you to the High Commission of India to Brunei Darussalam for the invitation.

It was announced during the celebration that the Government of India will host a “Festival of India” in Brunei Darussalam from October to mark the Golden Jubilee of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s accession to the throne. Now that’s really good news to hear to see India announcing the upcoming event which was announced by Her Excellency Nagma Mohamed Mallick, the Indian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam

This year also marks 25 years of Asean-India Dialogue Partnership and the High Commission of India in Brunei Darussalam and they will host several events such as car rally (wow), a food festival and musical events in celebration of the milestone in Brunei Darussalam.

Her Excellency Nagma Mohamed Mallick shared some insights and milestone since India gained independence for the past 70 years. India has a current population of 1.25 billion with a surplus production of food grains, exporting wheat and rice to the world and also ranking first in the world in milk production. India is also the most diverse country in the world with 29 states, 22 official languages and 1652 languages and dialects.. Just wow!!!!

India also has a GDP in absolute terms of USD 2.45 trillion and is the 6th largest economy in the world. The economy has grown with an average annual growth rate of over 7% over the past 3 years. There are over 1 billion mobile phone connections, 300 million own smartphones and around 400 million are connected online. The investor-friendly policies adopted by the Indian government allows India to receive sizeable foreign investment of USD 113.8 billion over the last three years.

Her Excellency mentioned that energy usage in India is rapidly evolving towards ever greater use of renewable energy as fossil fuels already provide only around 67% of energy demand. India has pledged to increase the share of renewable energy to 40% by 2030. Did you know that India is a founder of the International Solar Alliance, a coalition of 121 solar energy-rich prospective member countries located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn?

Another milestone is the Digital India initiative which aims to unite India on a common digital platform by 2019 to make available government services online on a real time basis. and set up a pan-India fibre optic network. India now ranks 3rd globally in terms of the number of start-ups and is the world’s youngest start-up nations (majority are less than 35 years old).

A new change was also introduced in India which is the Goods and Services Tax as The Act is a destination-based tax on goods and services in which only value addition will be taxed. It paves the way for a common rational market of 1.25% billion consumers and is expected to reduce the overall tax burden on goods from the current 25-30% down to an average of around 15%.

Her Excellency echoed what India Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared that “the next five years must be about “Sankalp se Siddhi, a resole which will lead us to accomplishment”.

Attending the celebration were Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education and his spouse.

During the celebration, a renowned musician, Pt. Vikash Maharaj, and his sons, played four Hindustani Classical music to the delight of the attendees. They played the Sarod, a stringed instrument from the Hindustani classical music tradition of India. Apparently it’s tougher to play the guitar and one of Pt. Vikash Maharaj’s sons has been playing the sarod since he was three years old.

Thank you once again to the High Commission of India for the invitation.

She pointed out that with the formal schooling (foundational-secondary years) provided at SAS, each one of the students can testify to the strong foundation received from their alma mater.

“Education at SAS has made us what we are now with many of us serving and holding key positions in the community and contributing strongly to the development of Brunei Darussalam.”

SAS began with 70 boys and girls 60 years ago in January 1957 and it was founded by the late Reverend Canon Paul Chong En Siong who together with his daughters Margaret, Kathleen and Grace, were the first teachers in the makeshift “school”, at the back of the St Andrew’s church vicarage.

Over time, the first chairman of the Board of Governors, Dato Ong Kim Kee generously donated a piece of land and the first set of classrooms with wooden floors and walls were built on this site and later with generous funding from parents and other kind individuals, more classrooms were added.

St Andrew’s School, with the hard work of the former and current Board of Governors, principals and senior management team, has grown to 1,710 students in strength with 106 teachers and staff, Keasberry said adding that it will continue to grow from strength to strength with continued support from the community.

The dinner also saw a slide show presentation as well as several stage performances including a tribute by the alumnus.

Their Royal Highness also consented to a group photo session with the Board of Governors and School Management team as well as a tour of the exhibition booths displayed at the hallway. Text courtesy of Lyna Mohd of Borneo Bulletin.

Hello Elva. Here was where we sign our memories

Rano’s take: Definitely I had a great time catching with my buddies from my class with Pg. Anak Ali and Rashid @ Rupert and not forgetting our former teachers from the school, Mrs. Ong (Maths), Mr. Chong (Malay and now Deputy Principal), Ms. Normah (Malay) and ever bubbly Mrs. Shafee (history). It was good to see familiar faces though our batch didn’t turn up that much and I was amazed that some of the people that I know used to be in SAS.

Of course, the most sought for teacher was Mrs. Shafee and it was funny to see her frowning when she tried to recall her former student names, tracking back to the 80s and the 90s. For sure, she still remembers me as we tend to bump to each other once in a while or so. She definitely has touched many lives of our students and shaped to where they are now. A big thank you to all the teachers who played parts in our lives too.

The only person that I really wanted to see or meet was Mr. Koshy, our Maths teacher and also the Principal of SAS back then. He had the biggest cheers when his picture popped up on the screen. I hope he’s in good health.

Thank you, Stephen Ong, for your hospitality and we all had a wonderful evening. The legacy continues in St. Andrew’s School and I’m already seeing better things happening in SAS. Keep up the great work!!
