The National Road Safety Council of Brunei Darussalam and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) inked a memorandum of understanding for a collaboration effort to organize events relating to the Road Safety Awareness Campaign.

Signing on behalf of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) was Dato Paduka Hj Alaihuddin bin Pehin Orang Kaya Digadong Seri Lela Dato Seri Utama Haji Awang Mohammad Taha in his capacity as the Chairman of NRSC, Ministry of Communication and signing on behalf of BIBD was Managing Director Mr Javed Ahmad.

Its first collaboration will be a walkathon to commemorate the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2011 which will be held this Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien. The main objective of this event is to bring awareness to everyone about road safety. It also aims to educate the public about delivering the message of United Nation ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011 – 2020)’.

The event hopes to foster closer relationship among NGOs, the Government and other institutions to deliver positivity in road safety awareness and road traffic ethics to road users.

The admission to the walkathon is free and the distances are 4.5km for men and 3.5km for ladies. All participants have to do, is to be present at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien this Sunday, before 6am to register to take part. The walkathon is open to all ages.

Other than the walkathon, various awareness activities will be held, and one of the activities will be the importance and ways of checking your tyres regularly.This event is supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs and various companies from the private sector including the official Event Partner, Sunlit Advertising Sdn Bhd.

The panels of the press conference were Head of BIBD’s Corporate Social Responsibility Hjh Nurul Akmar Jaafar and Head of Road Safety Unit, Ministry of Communication, Hj Joharry bin Hj Abd Karim.

During the press conference, Hj Joharry revealed that up to today, 39 road fatalities have been recorded, an increase of 50 percent compared to the official figures last year of 26, bearing in mind that it is not even December yet. He also shared that statistics between January until November this year, nearly 50 percent of fatal road accidents involved youths between the ages of 18 and 30. Text and images courtesy of BIBD.

A PRIZE presentation was held following the prize draw of Royal Brunei Catering’s (RBC) Malaysian Food Festival, at the Airport Restaurant recently.
