Acer Predator making its debut

Check out the new series of Acer Predator now available at Concepts Computer

The much anticipated gaming machine line, Predator, from Acer was officially launched at the Brilliance Hall of Concepts Computer last night. Present during the launch were Vincent Pao, the General Manager of Concepts Computer, Alice Chan, Financial Controller of Concepts Group of Companies, Pao Jia Wan, Business Development Executive of Concepts Group of Companies and Richard Soo, Acer Branch Manager of Acer Sales & Service, Miri.

So much to blog about the Acer Predator. I was already amazed when I saw the brochures a few weeks ago and last night, the Acer Predator line was launched to the media.

Definitely those into gaming and using heavy duty softwares, Acer Predator will tailor to your needs and satisfaction. The computers are also Windows 10 ready for end users.

Vincent Pao has a vision for his company, to bring the best IT products to the country especially from the Acer brand and he has kept his promise. He hopes the end users will be impressed with the Acer Predator as it will give “out-of-this-world” gaming experience to gamers. He applauded the team behind Acer Predator, the Predator Tribe, especially the Research and Development team in turning the machines into the best in its class.

Do check out the 15” and 17” laptops, sporting the bespoke design of red accents and a black chassis with geometric lines and soft texture coating. Not only are they of high performance but it also provides the Predator FrostCore, keeping the computers to operate at low temperatures so it won’t overheat. The other plus point is the PredatorSense gaming control panel so gamers can customise and control the gaming feature. The other term I learnt was the Killer DoubleShot, meaning you can enhance your gaming with the combination of wireless networking and Ethernet (cable). Hmmm interesting indeed.

When it comes to audio, the Predator SoundPound offers a combination of stellar audio features including up to four built-in speakers, two subwoofers and Dolby Audio surround to give the crisp sound on your gaming experience.

Special prizes for the members of the media

The Acer Predator 15

The Acer Predator G6

Let’s not forget the monitors they offer. The monitors are such as the Acer Predator Z35 (35” inch curve), Acer Predator Z34 (34” inch curve) and Acer Predator XB1 monitor (27” inch flat). I’m already impressed with the curved monitors because it will give you a panoramic view while you play your games or for me, watching movies 😀 The curved monitors sport futuristic aluminium based design with underflow lighting and mate finish look killer.

Now let’s talk about the desktops. Totally superb when I just looked at the specs. The Predator G6 is simply a monster of its own and it’s labeled as the Unstoppable War Machine. It’s powered with a 6th-gen Intel Core Processor and up to 64GB of DDR4 system memory. Interesting bit of the G6 is the Turbo button. Well, for instant overclocking, just press the button, and you will be in for a ride for some intense gaming experience. The overall design just look so wicked and cool. Time for gamers to show off their stuff to their friends. Of course, there is a tamer version which is the Acer Predator G3.

Do check out Concepts Computer branch at Kiulap or even at the Consumer Fair at their booth at ICC today till Sunday.

Milkcow enters Brunei

Well, if you are a fan of milk and you want blending taste in a form of ice-cream, Milkcow is your best bet. Last Sunday, @milkcowbn (Instagram) officially opened its door to the public and it was welcomed with overwhelming responses from the crowd.

One thing for sure was the free Milkcow icre-cream treats for the first 200 customers where they choose flavours between Milky Way, Milky Cube or Cookies and Cream. I have yet to taste other flavours but my next target is the Cookies and Cream definitely.

The flavours are imported to make sure that the ice-creams reached the same standard in other Milkcow outlets worldwide. Yes, Milkcow is a franchise from Korea and what’s great about the ice-cream is that it’s soft-served and plus it’s organic and complete with honeycomb.

The ice cream is made from organic, preservative-free milk. The milk is produced fresh daily and the ice cream batches are replenished after three days, as opposed to other soft serves that last for a month because they’re made from powdered milk.

The Milky Cube is perhaps the most popular item, which is topped with a piece of gooey, natural honeycomb. You can taste the hint of honey and yet it’s not too sweet. I’m surprised the chunk of honey can be easily cut and scoop to your liking to blend with every bite with the ice-cream.

Present during the launch were Managing Director of Milkcow Cho Kwang Sub, Master Franchisor for Brunei Hee Chong Moi and the business partner of Milkcow Brunei Kenny Wong.

Brunei becomes the 10th country to have Milkcow and the management believes that Brunei is a good market for their products.

Price ranges from $4.90 to $7 and it’s located on the ground floor of Times Square (near Freshco). For more updates, follow Milkcow’s Instagram @milkcowbn and Facebook at ‘Milkcow Brunei’.

Peugeot 2008

Check out the beautiful Peugeot 3008 Crossover. I’m also amazed with the affordable price tag on it too.

T.C.Y. Motors, sole distributor of Peugeot is announcing the official launching of Peugeot 2008 Crossover on January 25, 2016. Now you can view the Peugeot 3008 Crossover at the Upper Basement of Hua Ho Manggis until 31st January 2016. Another great news is this same model won the 2016 Dakar Rally. Awesome!! They have won 9 stages out of 13 and dominated the Dakar Rally. So do feel proud if you own a Peugeot 3008 😀

The new crossover by Peugeot is the first vehicle produced by the Marque that was designed and developed simultaneously by several geographic markets. With its worldwide objectives, the 2008 thrusts the Marque into a new dynamic, inline with its strategy of developing its crossover range and attracting new customers.

Peugeot innovates by designing the first urban crossover that is easy, exciting and brings an enhanced driving experience:

– An innovative i-cockpit, structured around the small steering wheel, combining high quality instrumentation and touch screen
– A dynamic behavior synonymous with enjoyment, with Peugeot’s ride and handling expertise,
– Freedom to go on mixed terrain due to raised ground clearance and protection.

For the full spec model, you will enjoy the blue backlit LED light strips around the panoramic glass roof and also on the innovative i-cockpit

The interior view of the Peugeot 3008

Innovative concept

The 2008 innovates by uniquely combining the driving characteristics of a hatchback and the strength of an SUV with an on-board area (passenger space, modularity and comfort) which invites you to enjoy each moment to the full. Equally at ease in town as on the open road, it can escape from the city with confidence due to its extended mobility features. Stimulating and versatile, the 2008 suits all customers.

Step into the light

Stepping into the interior of the 2008 means enjoying an elegant atmosphere and harmonious interior that carefully combining finely crafted trims and a unique luminous ambiance.

The blue backlit LED dials in the heads-up display and the LED strip around the panoramic glass roof provide subdued blue lighting give the 2008 a uniquely luminous appeal.

A unique style, combining elegance and strength

With its higher-driving position the 2008 is fitted with 16’’ alloy wheels. It has pronounced wheel arches that give it an appealing road presence and stance. The black bumpers and body sills serves to protect it from abrasions with the addition of front and rear body protection and side moldings on stainless steel.

The front face adopts the latest Peugeot style codes. Finely sculpted, the bonnet lines infer lightness, strength, and protection of the 2008, while the floating grille’ face has a solidity of form with vertical elements to harness aerodynamic performance and efficiency. The innovative headlamps are designed precisely to reflect the technical functions. Sharp and precise, they act with the bodywork to given the outline appearance of a cat’s pupil. Sculpted, they are at one with the front face, giving it an even more impressive, technological and individual character. This look is emphasized by LED day running lamps.

The rear also combines strength with dynamism. The boot volume, with a low loading sill, has above it a roofline with dynamic curves, inspired by the RCZ. The tailgate is wide and framed by lamps secured to the bodywork. Floating inside their housing, the three luminous claws are lit at their base by LEDs that appear suspended.

The latest-generation engines draw the very essence of the lightness and profiled silhouette to offer an exceptional driving experience combined with a true breakthrough in terms of fuel economy. Due to the technology of the new 3-cylinder petrol engines, the 2008 urban crossover stands out from the competition with CO2, starting from 99g/km.

Say no to child abuse

Story by Rabiatul Kamit of The Brunei Times. A young couple is facing heavy punishment after their abuse of a little girl came to light in a disturbing video widely shared on social media over the weekend.

Mohd Shahiful Rizal Bakri, 28, together with the mother of the four-year-old victim will be brought to court on charges of child abuse today, following their recording of the violent crime which led to their swift arrest on Monday.

The three-minute video showed the wailing child, whose hands and legs were tied, being physically and verbally attacked by Mohd Shahiful Rizal as her mother laughed in amusement.

It is unclear when the incident occurred and who uploaded the recording on the Internet, but the video went viral in Brunei on the weekend, causing public outrage and prompting immediate response from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).

The couple were investigated by the Women and Children Abuse Investigations Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department after receiving public tip-offs. Both suspects are accused under Section 28(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act, Chapter 219, which carries imprisonment for up to 10 years, a maximum fine of $20,000 with or without whipping not exceeding 10 lashes, or both.

The victim has also been taken to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital to undergo a physical examination.

A representative of the Community Development Department (JAPEM) said the child is currently in safe hands, but declined to elaborate further. The victim’s guardian was not immediately available for comment when contacted by The Brunei Times.

The RBPF also urged the public to immediately report information on crime by calling the 993 police emergency line or visiting their nearest police station. Those in possession of the viral child abuse video were ordered to delete and refrain from circulating the material in accordance to Section 95 of the Children and Young Persons Act, which forbids the publication or distribution of any content which may compromise the victim’s identity.

Anyone found flouting the law can be punished with a maximum fine of $5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both if convicted.

In protecting the safety and welfare of the community, the RBPF said all cases of violence are taken seriously and action will be undertaken against such offences in line with the provisions of the sultanate’s laws.

My views: Firstly, this is such a tough ordeal to go through, even watching the video. I skipped almost the entire of the clip because I couldn’t bear to watch an innocent young soul being abused by adults. It’s simply not right and I condone condemn violence. I do hope justice will be served. There’s also another grey area when it comes to sharing such videos. If the incident wasn’t being shared, then no one will know of it and tipped the relevant authorities. If it becomes viral, then you could be trouble with the law. However, kudos to the RBPF for taking swift action on the culprits and let me this be the message to all child abusers to rethink their actions and the implications it can have on their children.

Venus Chong to share her views on the negative implications of the Internet

Venus Chong. At 17 years old, shehas already had her fair share of experience in public speaking. Her journey started back in her old high school, STPRI, when she was in Year 8. She has been an emcee for assemblies, joined the National Debate Competition and the National English Language Oratory Competition (BELTA). Entering Maktab Duli did not stop her achievements. She became a part of the winning Upper Team in the Upper Level National Debate Competition. Soon after, she was elected as President.

Venus considers herself outspoken and very opinionated. She’ll be sharing with us how the Internet has amplified the narcissist in all of us. She believes that there lies a narcissist in each and every one of us, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Venus plans to make us realize, accept and love ourselves a little bit more.

Ahmad Syauqie will share his thoughts on cyber bullying

Ahmad Syauqie. He started out experiencing bad stage frights until in 2012, his interest in public speaking was peaked with the encouragement of a teacher. He won 3rd place in the National English Language Oratory Competition (BELTA) and later helped the next BELTA representatives and his peers in their science presentation.

Public speaking isn’t the only thing, however, that caught Syauqie’s attention. He realized that cyber bullying is growing to be an increasing problem in our society. The effects it has on each individual are left in the dark, therefore he aims to shed light on this situation. He hopes people would channel the kindness within and use technology for the greater good. Let him tell you how.

Only a few tickets left for Gold and Silver seats. Do call the number to see if there are still available.

The KK Experience

It’s always fun traveling in groups because it gives a different sense of fun and bonding. This time, 20 from Brunei Toastmasters (BSC, UBD, BASC and Otters) traveled to Kota Kinabalu for a joint meeting with KK toastmasters, its first ever to be conducted. The toastmasters meeting followed the Brunei agenda and format to share experience with the KK toastmasters on how it is being conducted in Brunei.

I noticed some differences from Brunei and KK in terms of the agenda. Firstly, the table topic speeches take place in the first half of the meeting. Brunei toastmasters had this practice for many years until they change the format a few years ago and it has been very effective for speech evaluators and time management.

Secondly, the KK toastmasters have an invocator to kick off the meeting, toasting to Yang Di Pertain Agong and Yang Di Pertua Negeri Sabah and lastly to Toastmasters International. Interesting. We don’t practice that in Brunei.

Lastly, just a few things such as a Humour Master for KK side for a max of 5 minutes to entertain the audience and the different role of the Table Topics Evaluator where he or she focuses more on the Table Topics Master then briefly on the Table Topics speakers.

On Sunday, we had a leadership training on how to improve the clubs and also to retrain the executive committees (Exco) of the various toastmasters club from KK and Brunei. This training is normally carried out at least twice a year in hoping the Excos that attended can share their knowledge to their respective clubs.

Overall, a fruitful weekend I had and a big thank you to my KK friends, Phylicia, Laurence and Jerry, for bring me around last weekend. I’m also glad that Brunei Speakers’ Club has two new members now – Satra and Alfa. Our club is definitely growing but let’s not forget the older members who have played an important role in sustaining the club.

5 stars award for GLC

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in News, RA News

5 stars for Mercedes-Benz GLC

The Mercedes-Benz GLC achieves the top score in the Euro NCAP rating. The new mid-size SUV has received five stars, continuing the Mercedes-Benz success story in impressive style. In 2014 the GLA, C-Class and V-Class were likewise awarded five stars by Euro NCAP.

The GLC has achieved five stars for occupant safety, child safety, pedestrian protection and its assistance systems – giving it the maximum score in the Euro NCAP rating. The basis for this outstanding result is the perfect interaction between active and passive safety: the combination of a highly rigid safety passenger cell, highly effective restraint systems, the latest driver assistance systems and other measures leads to first-class test results.

“The new GLC’s gratifying result in the Euro NCAP rating confirms the success of our efforts in the areas of active and passive safety,” says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rodolfo Schöneburg, Head of Vehicle Safety, Durability and Corrosion Protection at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We will continue to intensify our efforts in the future, so as to provide the best possible safety not only for drivers and passengers in a Mercedes-Benz, but also for more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.”

Real Life Safety plus Intelligent Drive

Assessment by means of crash ratings is only one aspect of the comprehensive safety philosophy followed by Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to the knowledge acquired as a result of accident research conducted in-house, the GLC has also been systematically designed with real-world accidents in mind. In this way, MercedesBenz is once again highlighting the leading role it plays as a safety pioneer in the field of automotive safety. The comprehensive approach taken by Mercedes-Benz accident research centres on avoiding accidents completely or mitigating their consequences. The company uses the term “Real Life Safety” to describe this approach.

Almost all of the driver assistance systems which are familiar from the C-, E- and S Class are available for the new GLC. As part of the Intelligent Drive concept, these systems combine data from various sensor technologies to substantially enhance comfort and safety. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist and ATTENTION ASSIST are on board as standard. The Driving Assistance package Plus provides an even more comprehensive range of active safety features, comprising DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS.

These measures exceeding the bounds of the actual Euro NCAP rating have
been acknowledged by Euro NCAP with two so-called “Advanced Rewards” for PRESAFE® and ATTENTION ASSIST.

Best possible protection for more vulnerable road users

The protection of more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists is also taken very seriously by Mercedes-Benz. The GLC is equipped with an active bonnet which is raised by 80 millimetres during an impact to provide additional deformation space. Under the bonnet, the package has been further optimised with a new engine cover and deformable air intake, creating yet more deformation space. In this way the GLC meets the stringent pedestrian protection requirements of Euro-NCAP, which go well beyond the legal requirements.

BAS PLUS warns the driver when pedestrians are detected in the danger zone by the stereo camera. The PRE-SAFE® Brake with pedestrian recognition triggers autonomous braking when the system detects a pedestrian in the danger zone and the driver does not react to the system’s warnings. This pedestrian detection forming part of the optionally available Driving Assistance package Plus represents a milestone in preventing accidents with pedestrians or mitigating their consequences.

Recently launched in Brunei Darussalam, Mercedes-Benz GLC, last December 2015

A tradition of top results for Mercedes-Benz

The most recent top result for the GLC is a continuation of last year’s successes: in last year’s Euro NCAP ratings the GLA, the C-Class and the V-Class likewise achieved five stars, occupying the top positions amongst all vehicles tested in 2014. The C-Class was specially praised by Euro NCAP as the best in class among medium-class passenger cars.

From 2015 onwards, the test requirements have been extended to include a further frontal impact against a rigid barrier. The full points score for frontal impact protection is therefore divided between this new test and the offset frontal impact test against a deformable obstacle. The side impact test now uses a larger, heavier impact sledge, and the lateral post impact test is conducted with a stronger impact offset at an angle. A new, more realistic crash-test dummy – WordSID – is now used for the side impact tests for a better assessment of occupant protection.

The Australian Open. Oi, Oi, Oi.. That’s how they chant the Aussie way. The next two weeks, I will be heavily be attentive to the first Grand Slam of the year – The Australian Open. My favourite is, of course, Roger Ferderer, and he is still looking sharp at the age of 34. Not bad at all.

The biggest upset so far is Rafael Nadal who lost in a 5-setter to Verdasco in the first round. Has Nadal got what is left of him? According to the press, he has still have much to offer on the court. Rafael is also the ambassador for Kia as he unveiled the latest Kia X-Car at the Australian Open 2016 last week.

My other favourite player is Maria Sharapova who breezed past the second round with ease. One player that I am also eyeing is Lleyton Hewitt, playing his last Australia Open and also he is in his final professional tennis career. Let’s see how far the Australian can go on his home turf.

Tennis superstar and Kia global brand ambassador Rafael Nadal lifted the cover off of Kia’s latest ‘X-Car’ today in Melbourne, Australia during the official VIK handover ceremony for the Australian Open 2016. Needs to be addressed

I’m glad someone wrote this piece to the Editor (The Brunei Times)

Movies ain’t for babies. I have highlighted this long time ago on my social media last year. It boggles me why parents would bring toddlers or babies or even small kids to movies that are inappropriate. This is pretty common in Brunei because the rules and regulations are not as strict. It’s only relying on “common sense” for parents or guardians to take that huge responsibility.

It’s not worth it to disrupt the harmony of movie goers who paid their dues for a movie experience. For one thing, babies won’t be able to understand the context of the movie though there might be an element of influence such as violence (which is a definite no-no). The most annoying part would be the the cry (or the screaming) babies. This has happened occasionally and it was relieved when mothers carrying their babies would politely exit the cinema to lessen the disruption.

Just a point for parents: Do be considerate to other movie goers and also for the sake of your kids.

Mistake is your best teacher

[Tuesday 8:04am] Aloha, everyone. It’s good to be back typing once more. Things have been just fine and dandy. Not reaching excellence just yet but not too bad. I just feel I’m at a plateau stage right now and needed a sense of zest to kickstart something. That’s the expectation that I put upon myself and sometimes I just wait.. and wait for that opportunity. Only to realise that the old Rano doesn’t wait. The old him would crave and hunt for opportunities, create them for new challenges.

This is what most of us are afraid – to fall or fail. I was afraid too. If you never challenged yourself, your personal growth will be limited. I was spoon-fed, pampered and being stuck in that comfort zone for many, many years. Getting out of that habit won’t be an overnight task but it takes one small step to slowly grow. Just build those steps and slowly you will discover new things and it will be a wonderful ride. It’s ok to make mistakes or fail because there are more of your lessons rather than failures.

At this moment, I would say I am still in my “newer” comfort zone. I have raised the bar for myself and yet again I shared about my expectations I planted to myself. My mind is ready for a new challenge. Just waiting for my heart to be realigned with my thoughts. I will break out of my comfort zone. Yes, one step at a time. It’s a journey, not a destination. Have a great week, peeps 😀

Ah, a great reminder not to stay too long in that comfort zone. The key word I see there is “create”. So let’s not just stop there. Do something. Anything.

One of my role models, Dananjaya, World Champion of Public Speaking 2014, and he still creates that impact to this very day. I’m proud to say that he will be coming to Brunei this October because one big reason – “I see something in him”.

Check out the amazing winning speech by Dananjaya that won the hearts of many.

How Microsoft has evolved

The resellers and partners of Microsoft during the educational session hosted by Concepts Technologies and Microsoft (Brunei) at Brilliance Hall, Concepts Technologies this morning

Joneil Joseph, Software Licensing Specialists, Concepts Technologies, sharing knowledge on licensing

We have been familiar with Microsoft for many, many years. Anyone with a PC or even a Mac would have experienced Microsoft products. I grew up with Microsoft Windows 3.0 during my Aussie days and now it has evolved to Windows 10 (the best Windows yet). My biggest disappointment of the Windows series was the Vista version. Though I have shifted using a different operating system, the latest Windows 10 have given much confidence to end users.

Today Concepts Technologies hosted a session with their local partners on educating the licensing, agreement, renewals of subscription on Microsoft software and products. The presentation was led by Danial Azizan Abdullah Henry, the newly appointed SME Lead for Microsoft Brunei, where he shared the benefits of having cloud services through means of Microsoft products.

The other sessions were then conducted by Joneil Joseph, Software Licensing Specialist, Concept Technologies and Ardoni Siregar, Manager of Software Distribution, Concepts Technologies. I realised that the end users of Microsoft products still have much to know about the other benefits. We always have this perception that Microsoft products are expensive and difficult with many options available (in terms of agreements and licensing).

Today I learnt that Microsoft can make life easier with the multiple benefits. It’s really hard to explain here because they have many categories when it comes to licensing, tailoring especially to your business needs. Corporate companies will see a huge benefit as it can be a cost effective measure. I also learnt about Software Assurance where end users can enjoy free upgrades especially. As you know that Microsoft keeps upgrading their software, so you won’t have to pay extra within your subscription period.

Let’s hope during the session that the resellers of Microsoft software will have a better idea on how to pass the knowledge to the end users.
