#earthhourbn a success

Late post: Brunei Darussalam joined other countries and territories across some 7,000 cities and towns around the world in the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature’s Earth Hour celebration, which traditionally is symbolically marked by switching off all non-essential lights for an hour.

The Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Complex in the heart of the capital was the focal point for activities and Earth Hour celebration in the country, which kicked off at 8.30pm last Saturday.

Lights from landmarks in the capital including the iconic Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer Tourism and Cultural Gallery and Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium were dimmed for one hour, signifying the country’s support in the worldwide cause to conserve energy.

Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, was present to officiate Brunei’s Earth Hour celebration at the YSHHB Complex, where he also joined a night-walk around the capital with Brunei Earth Hour Ambassador, Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed and Brunei Earth Hour supporters.

One of highlights of the event last night was the “Glow Stick Run” that was joined by hundreds of people. The fun run also saw cyclists doing their bid in supporting Earth Hour.

Lights at the complex were also switched off as hundreds of people gathered at the water fountain area. Candles were also lit to symbolise the event.

Prior to the event, a minute’s moment of silence was held in memory of the crew and passengers of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 tragedy. Now in its eighth year, Earth Hour has evolved into the world’s largest environmental grassroots movement connecting hundreds of millions of people across all seven continents. Sprucing up the event last night was also the appearance of Spider-man, the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour.

In Singapore, the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was on hand to help switch off the lights across Singapore’s signature Marina Bay skyline as part of the global flagship Earth Hour event organised by WWF-Singapore. Text courtesy of Hakim Hayat of Borneo Bulletin.

Nanta to perform

at JIS Arts Centre

The ‘Nanta’ cast was feted to a dinner hosted by South Korean Ambassador to Brunei His Excellency Choi Byung-Koo at his residence yesterday.

The 12-member troupe shared what to expect in their two-day show starting tomorrow over a lavish spread of traditional Korean dishes with other invited guests of the ambassador.

“Brunei is the 51st country in the tour. We have collectively staged ‘Nanta’ in more than 200 cities,” said Manager of the Overseas Marketing Team for Nanta Yong-Hee Kim.

“Brunei is a nice and quiet country and we think that they will appreciate the show and be more engaged with the performers,” he added.

Kim explained that ‘Nanta’ is a non-verbal performance. Set in a kitchen, the performers transform kitchen utensils into musical instruments.

The comic musical is derived from the traditional Korean instrumental performance called “Samulnori”.

The show features acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. ‘Nanta’ will be performed at Jerudong International School Arts Centre on April 1-2. The showcase celebrates the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Republic of Korea and Brunei. Only ticket holders will be admitted to the 7.30pm shows.

The Korean Embassy can be contacted for more information at 233 0248/49/50. Well, you can try your luck but apparently most of the tickets are sold out. Text and image courtesy of Zatty Joanda.

Earth Hour SG

Emma Stone and her love interest Andrew Garfield, the casts of The Amazing Spider-Man movie with director Marc Webb at the Earth Hour Event. Image courtesy of Getty Images for Sony

This is the second time I attended Earth Hour events in Singapore. I have to say though that not many landmarks or buildings actually pledged for the Earth Hour for an hour or so in Singapore. The same also goes to Melbourne when I was there two years ago. Earth Hour wasn’t that celebrated to its maximum or maybe even a quarter of its maximum (if there’s such measurement).

Yesterday I attended an event organised by @wwfsg (instagram) at the Marina Float, Singapore. There was quite a turn out last night too. Of course, the biggest draw was the appearance of the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man movie with their director and producers. So it was nice of them to fly all the way to Singapore for a few days’ visit and spreading the awareness of conserving energy. It’s also message for all of us that we can play our part as superheroes and save the planet. Awesome!!

The event carried on after 9:30pm but we left around 10pm and I wasn’t sure what time it ended. There was DJ Dave spinning some music to the delight of the crowd. I think I am too old for this *lol* Nonetheless, well done to the WWF SG and the those involved in making this event a huge success.

As for Brunei, thumbs up for another successful Earth Hour event. I saw tons of pictures on Instagram and it looks you guys really had fun. Awesome!! I shall be reporting and blogging about that soon too.

DPMM FC held at Bedok

The mascot and the umpires for the night at Bedok Stadium, Singapore

It was a step down performance from DPMM FC after failing to get back to winning ways. The first three games saw DPMM FC earning a full 9 points but only managed to collect one point from the last two games. Despite holding 2nd place in the S•League, it was still a huge improvement as compared to last season.

Before the match, the odds were against Geylang International FC and they were almost at the foot of the table. A big applause to GIFC for holding their defence till the very end as DPMM FC squandered two great chances to gain all the three points. Yuki Ichikawa scored the opening goal in the 17th minute after a Wardun failed to grab an easy catch and the Japanese import from GIFC kick the ball from close range for the shock lead.

Brunei DPMM FC redeemed themselves after a nice set-piece cross from Azwan Salleh who was in for Sairol Sahari who still nursing a knock on his knee from the previous game. Rodrigo Tosi scored from an Azwan delivery free kick to make it 1-1 in the 21st minute. Tosi was disappointed with himself as he had another chance after Azwan Ali had a perfect cross down the left wing but Tosi misconnect the shot which was a goal opportunity.

The first half ended with both sides not creating enough chances but more of challenging high balls in midfield. Roy O’Donovan who was on a cast after a minor surgery on his thumb, was involved but failed to muster a shot in the first half.

The second half was a slightly better affair with a few counter attack moments. However, both sides couldn’t find the net and I also just realised how the pitch was uneven and bumpy as well which made it slightly tricky to play on. Tosi was gifted another chance in the 49th minute after a counter attack and one of the best run of play from DPMM FC but Tosi’s shot ended wide to the delight of the GIFC keeper.

Azwan Ali also had a great chance but his final choice of continuing to dribble instead of taking a shot in the box proved costly. It was already a great play by Roberto who fed Ali with a perfect through pass but Ali had a touch too many in the box and allowed GIFC to close him down in the 53rd minute.

GIFC had chances too in the second half. Hafiz Nor had a driving shot but wide of the post in the 57th minute. Hafiz could have bettered himself in the 71st minute after GIFC’s Ridhuan Muhammad bursted down the right wing and crossed to the unmarked Hafiz but he lost control of the ball and Wardun intercepted the ball to safety.

As the game was heading for a draw, O’Donovan could have sealed all three points as it was the best chance of the whole 90 mins. He only had the keeper to beat but his directed shot from close range was easily read by Joey Sim who had a commanding presence in goal. O’Donovan could have opted to pass the ball to Shahrazen who was also opened but it wasn’t to be DPMM FC’s night. The miss proved costly and both side shared the spoils.

Now DPMM FC have to focus on their next two games at home (6th April and 11th April) and let’s hope they gain full maximum six points to get back to winning ways.

Shahrazen had some play time but couldn’t muster a goal attempt. With a few more match time, he will definitely get back to shape.

The miss that could have made the difference. His effort went straight to the keeper on a one on one situation in injury time. It could have been the winning shot.

Plenty of opportunities

at Energy Week 2014

His Majesty speaking to Dyg Siti Saffawana Hj Suhaili, Brunei Shell Petroleum’s first female pilot

His Majesty touring the Shell Eco-Marathon area. All these cars are built by students.

The Minister of Energy, Pehin Datu Singamanteri Col (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Awg Hj Mohammad Yasmin bin Hj Umar, has always been very involved with the ongoing current Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX. I haven’t seen such an involved and hand-ons minister. Pehin and his team has invested a lot of effort and contribution in creating opportunities for the community. So I’m very honoured to see your high involvement, Pehin, in making this event not just bigger but a successful one and hopes the momentum doesn’t just end there.

With the current rate of local unemployment on the increase during the past few years, relatively coinciding with the rapid hike in the number of graduates of higher education, the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam continues to provide more job opportunities to accommodate local job seekers.

Over 1,000 job vacancies have been made available at the Oil and Gas Career and Job Fair of the Energy Week 2014, which was launched last Monday by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam at the Bridex International Convention Centre in Jerudong. Held annually since 2011, the fair aims to encourage locals to dive into a career in the oil and gas industry in Brunei Darussalam.

Fifty five companies will be present throughout the Energy Week, readied with a total of 1,130 technical and non-technical positions up for grabs.

Classified into 14 job categories, the fair has 320 vacancies in the field of engineering; 255 in construction; 194 in health, security, safety and environment; 133 in operations; 91 in marine; 40 in business/finance; 32 in IT; 27 in administration; 18 in logistics; 10 in hospitality/catering; five in legal; two in aviation; two in human resources and one in the supply chain.

When you cycle, you create energy and this is one way to create energy conservatively. Currently BSP Pavilion is having a mini competition to those who can bring the most energy/watts in one minute span. This student from ITB was the highest scorer then but lost his energy level after realising he didn’t have any meals since breakfast. Hope you are better now 🙂

I only managed to produce half of what the ITB student did

Another student creating energy through cycling

Marul in his coveralls

There is also quizzes to try out at BSP Pavilion at Energy Week 2014

On top of the 55 job vacancy booths, the fair also features career development paths for certain jobs skill pool in the industry, as well as a CV writing clinic which should be able to aid job applicants to get a better idea of how best to structure their curriculum vitae in respect to the fields they intend to pursue.

Like in previous job fairs, this year’s participating companies will also be conducting walk-in interviews and live demonstrations.

The Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) will continue to work closely with oil and gas industry players to achieve the goal of creating at least 50,000 employment opportunities and producing 5,000 professional locals and 35,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers in the energy sector in line with the nation’s Vision 2035. Text courtesy of  Khal Baharulalam of Borneo Bulletin.

One of first steps if you want to be involved in Oil and Gas is to sign up and register. Procedure is simple and more than 1,000 applicants have already registered

I learnt some new about “marker fitter” and it is a very specialized technique of welding. The more advanced you are in qualifications, the more pay you will get and entry level is at zero knowledge. Why not give this a shot?

Faizal gave me some insight of his job scope and he seems to be a hardworking individual who never wants to stop learning and gain experience. We need more youth like him.

It’s nice to see our locals knowing technical stuff and explaining on how the pressure gauge works.

Do you know that scaffolding pays good money when you go up the rank? This is another avenue for the youth to be involved with and trust me, you will enjoy this and you will surprised how much the pay is once you go through different levels and experiences as a scaffolder. Thanks Jeffrin for the information.

Phase 2 of Hengyi’s multi-billion

dollar plan starting 2019

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam visiting Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd’s pavilion at the 2014 Energy Week Exhibition
Phase two of Hengyi’s multi-billion dollar oil refinery and aromatics production plant is expected to begin operation in 2019, two years after phase one production begins, according to information from their pavilion at the Energy Week fair at the BRIDEX International Convention Centre.

According to the information displayed at their booth, phase one is expected to begin operation in 2017.

Phase one will produce petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, Jet A-1 fuel and petrochemical products such as paraxylene and benzene, said the company in a press statement. It also noted that the construction for phase one is scheduled to begin as soon as “once all conditions have been satisfied”.

According to one of Hengyi’s technicians, William Kwok who was at their pavilion at the Energy Week exhibition, work in clearing the land has been completed and they are at the moment, reclaiming areas of sea that will eventually be used to dock tankers.

He assured that they have been keeping in line with the Environmental Impact Assessment that has been done prior to the start of the project, and will continue to follow it when they begin operations.

For example, they have deployed monitoring devices for the reclamation process so that debris and other ground matter that had been disturbed would not spread too far from the construction site, contaminating its surroundings. “The devices measure the turbidity of the water, so if it gets too high, we stop construction and let it settle first,” he said.

He also noted that there are a number of heritage sites, usually old cemeteries, had been fenced off and expected to be left undisturbed.

Kwok also explained a number of technologies that they plan to use once the plant has been built, including a heat reclaimation system that hoped to reduce emissions as well as a “mulit-feed distillation system” which distills sea-water to fresh water for use by the refinery which uses relatively low energy compared to other systems.

His Majesty signs a plaque at Hengyi Industries

The force behind Hengyi Industries.
The investment for Phase one of the project is expected to create about 780 job opportunities.

Phase two, an expansion of the petrochemical production, is expected to push the total project cost to USD$6 billion, from the USD$4 billion invested into phase one. Another 700 or more jobs are expected to be added once phase two begins operation, according to the company’s information at the Energy Week 2014 exhibition.

The total area the refinery and aromatics production plant is expected to occupy is about 280 hectares.

Hengyi Industries were among one of the companies that showcased an interactive booth displays representing company profile, local business development activities, Universiti Brunei Darussalam & Zhejiang University scholarship programme and products display amongst others.

Hengyi Industries also took part in the Job Fair & LBD Forum that showcased the various educational schemes, employment opportunities and business development initiatives undertaken to increase the ‘local content’ of locally registered companies.

According to previous reports, The phase one complex will be able to produce 1.5 million tonnes a year of diesel; 400,000 tonnes a year of gasoline; one million tonnes per year of jet kerosene; 1.5 million tonnes per year of naphtha, 1.5 million tonnes per year of paraxylene (PX) and 500,000 tonnes per year of benzene. Brunei to celebrate

Earth Hour on Saturday

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei mingling with representatives of Earth Hour Brunei at Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX. There will be there until Saturday.

It’s happening soon. Earth Hour that is. It’s an awareness about energy conservation and it’s no surprise that Brunei is joining again this year. So basically it’s switching off non-essential lights for an hour (normally from 8:30pm) and this year, our Minister of Development will lead the symbolic “lights-off” initiative at Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah this Saturday 29th March.

Apparently there will be ongoing activities to keep the spirit and the momentum of Earth Hour celebration in Brunei. There will be a fun run and cycle ride and even a night walk around Bandar. Of course, the best form of spreading such news is on social media and I urged all of you to share this moment on instagram with the hashtag #EHBN and you can follow them too @earthhourbn for more details and updates.

Did you know this year’s global ambassador for Earth Hour is Spider-Man with a simple message to inspire individuals to become “superheroes for the planet”. Nice!! I shall be covering that event organised by WWF-Singapore where there will be a special appearance by the casts of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at the Marina Bay Skyline.

As for Brunei, the other landmarks will be Kampung Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, Royal Wharf, and Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque. For more information, you can visit their website.

His Excellency Jean Yves Berthault, French Ambassador in Brunei Darussalam hosting dinner for the media and bloggers at his residence two nights ago

Thank you, Your Excellency Jean Yves Berthault for hosting the media and bloggers two nights ago at his residence. Jean Yves Berthault is the current French Ambassador in Brunei Darussalam. I really love the residence which has an awesome view of the river from the top of the hill along Kota Batu area. Furthermore, we all were well fed by the excellent cuisine and we were treated to various kinds of cheese as well 😀

The reason for the dinner invitation was to officially announce by the French Ambassador of the upcoming event organised by the French Embassy in Brunei Darussalam, a French Exhibition – A Showcase of Everything French. The event will take place on Saturday 5th April 2014 at the Times Square Shopping Centre.

His Excellency said that this is the first time that the French Embassy organised such event and the aim is to give the community of Brunei Darussalam a taste of what France as to offer. There will be activities such as the French Cuisine Showcase, basic French Language tutorial by Alliance Francaise, education opportunities with Campus France, car showcase by Peugeot and showcase of welding expertise from Institut de Soudure.

His Excellency shared that these showcases will also reinforce bilateral businesses between Brunei and France as well as the trust they place in the vibrant future of Brunei Darussalam.

France is also in support to Brunei’s VISION 2035 by encouraging the development of cooperation in vocational studies. In this case, Institut de Soudure is to set up a high-end vocational study with Mechanical Training Centre so that our locals will be given a high quality training for welding to match the demands especially in the Oil and Gas sector. I personally went to see the booth of Syarikat Pakar Tenaga Bersatu at the Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX to learn more on how they are involved in the training program for welders. You will be surprised how much welders can earn as they rise up the ranks and qualifications.

Also present during the dinner was Pierre Imhof, the President of the French Brunei Business Association and he plays an important role in the synergies of French brands, companies and organisations with Brunei Darussalam.

So do come to the French showcase on the Saturday 5th April 2014 at the Times Square Shopping Centre and you can also stand a chance to win two airplane tickets to France as part of the lucky draw sponsored by Air France.

The event is supported by Total, French Brunei Business Association, Amundi Asset Management, Air France, Institut de Soudure, Peugeot, Michelin, Alliance Francaise and Campus France.

DPMM FC focus on next match

Roy O’Donovan was injured in the last game but kept on playing against Tampines Rovers. He had a minor surgery on his left thumb ligament and now sporting a cast. However, he still insists to play against Geylang International FC this Friday.

Steve Kean’s press conference with the media last Sunday

One on one with Steve Kean and his views of last game against Tampines Rovers where DPMM FC lost 2-1.

On DPMM FC’s performance: “The performance was there and we were trying to win the game. It wasn’t easy to stay at 1-1. We brought Param (Azwan Salleh) who can put a cross in. Sairol was getting very tired and he cramped his calf. So we brought in Adi who is another forward thinking player. I was disappointed with the second goal because when the ball was in the middle of the pitch, we have to get more pressure on the ball because obviously they are gonna shoot and get something on target. That was a disappointing factor.”

On the positive side: “On the positive side, we created enough chances to win. We just have to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

“If we hit the post and not score, this will give the other team a hope that they are still in the game and I think that’s what happen. We just had to get that second goal after conceding the goal in the manner we did.”

On Azwan Ali’s performance: “He prefers that position (attacking mid) that being wide. The defenders didn’t know where he was going and he kept going into the pockets and he can turn and he can dribble. Sometimes he was unlucky but he is an exciting player and he makes things happens whenever on the ball.

On the performance of the referee: “I don’t like to criticize referees. I think it’s the hardest job and I don’t who wants to be a referee. Because we just hope over the course of the season, we can get most of the decisions our way and some are gonna go against you.”

DPMM FC will fly to Singapore tomorrow for their match against Geylang International FC at Bedok Stadium. The match will be played on Friday 28th March. Good luck!!

Financial planning

for IGS students

In a continuing effort to increase financial planning awareness among students in Brunei Darussalam, a team of managers from Baiduri Bank today visited the Kolej IGS in the capital where they presented a talk to some 200 students of the college. The talk emphasized the importance of financial planning to achieve financial success in life and outlined how students can benefit from suitable banking products such as the “4U” Value Pack which was specifically designed with students needs in mind.

Alice Lee, Branch Manager of Baiduri Kiulap Branch gave the welcome remarks followed by a talk on basic financial planning by Siti Aminah, Bancassurance Manager at Baiduri’s Wealth Management Centre. She gave tips on the choices students have today to save money. “Young people should be aware of their financial choices when it comes to planning for their future. This will ease them in their undertakings should they choose to study locally or abroad.”

Members of Baiduri Bank with the participants of the talk at IGS

This was then followed by a talk on the “4U Value Pack” Student Account by Shannon Sikun, Branch Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Muara Branch. Available to students aged between 12 and 29 years old, the package is designed to meet the needs of students studying in Brunei or overseas. It offers ease of banking via electronic channels as well as fee waivers or discounts on services such as overseas ATM cash withdrawals, processing fees on bank reference letters for student visa applications, funds transfers and financing. In addition, parents of the account holders can also apply for loans and financing to help meet expenses related to their child’s education, such as tuition fees, travel costs or purchase of laptops, stationery or books.

The talk ended with a quiz and a question and answer session. Upon giving the correct answers, students were given Baiduri merchandise and Starbucks vouchers which the students participated with great enthusiasm.
At the end of the talk, Pg Hajah Fatimah Binti Pg Setia Jaya Pg Hj Momin, CEO of Kolej IGS presented the Baiduri Bank team with a token of appreciation. “The talk definitely gave an insight to what Baiduri has to offer and our students are thrilled to know that there are programmes that will take care of them while they are pursuing their education.”

Divergent review

Divergent. I won’t share much too much but you are more than welcome to listen to our podcast (see soundcloud below) and see what you think. The biggest disappointment for me is the delivery of the movie as we are in the era of “Young Adult” adaptations with the likes of Twilight (glad that was over) and The Hunger Games (much better). Yes, we do have huge flops like The Host, The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures. However, Divergent have avoided the bombshell pit as it raked in almost US 60 million in the opening weekend.

Anyway, back to the delivery part. Well, the biggest flaw here is the pacing and film editing. It was totally disjointed and there wasn’t a moment I feel any anti-climax or climax for that matter. The other problem is when you already identify the problem, then you will have to endure the next 2 and a half hours of restlessness. The lead roles by Shailene Woodley and Theo James couldn’t bring the movie to better heights. The direction by Neil Burger (Illusionist) didn’t do justice to the best selling novel. I’m hoping for a redeeming sequel since it performed well in the box office but let’s hope these mistakes are being listened to and more improvements in the sequel.

You can check out my popcorn panel’s co-host blog post on Divergent and of course, you can listen to our podcast. Happy listening. Verdict: 5/10 Rottentomatoes 40%

Listen to our podcast review of Divergent and stand a chance to win PS4 console when I post the quiz on IG later on

His Majesty launched Energy Week

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam officially launched the Energy Week 2014 and he was accompanied by Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday at BRIDEX

It was wonderful to see His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei officiating the Energy Week 2014 and visiting all the booths and exhibitors involved in Energy Week 2014. The program went over time because His Majesty spent quite some time at some booths and engaging with the people and students involved in Energy Week 2014 held at the BRIDEX Hall.

It was nice to see His Majesty mingled with the youth and students especially and it shows his concern and interest in our youth. I also realised that His Majesty became more interested if Universiti Brunei Darussalam is involved in the project and also graduates from UBD.

His Majesty quoted the Energy Week was very good and he congratulated the organiser on the event during the short interview by Rachel Thien of The Brunei Times. It was also nice to see His Majesty spent more time during the exhibition despite His Majesty’s busy schedule as he had to fly to Myanmar the same day.

I shall be flooding this post with tons of pictures from the opening of Energy Week 2014. I suggest you drop by BRIDEX this week and for those, jobseekers especially, the best time to come and see what they have to offer at oil and gas as well as maritime.

More updates on Energy Week later. I know I have many information to share so do bear with me. Congratulations to Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin and his team from Energy Division at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) on the successful launch and hopefully the whole week will run smoothly.

His Majesty impressed

with Energy Week 2014

Text from Rachel Thien of The Brunei Times. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday said he was pleased to see more locals joining the oil and gas industry.

After launching the Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX International Conference Centre, Hall 2, Jerudong, the monarch said it was a “very good” sight to see, after speaking to hundreds of Bruneians explaining their roles in contributing to the economy.

His Majesty, who launched the Energy White Paper and Oil and Gas book, later toured both exhibition halls to meet the players in the industry, as well as viewed initiatives by the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) and other agencies to create more jobs.

“The exhibition was very well-established, and I would like to congratulate the Energy Department, His Majesty told The Brunei Times prior to completing the tour.
Throughout the Sultan’s visit, all one could see was a big smile on his face as he interacted with not only industry players, but also mingled with students from various energy clubs. His Majesty even tested one of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP)’s bicycles.

The static bicycle was meant for demonstration purposes to show the monarch how humans could generate power just by cycling.

All eyes and sounds of cheer were directed toward His Majesty when he agreed to give it a try and cycle for about a minute.

This year’s theme for the Energy Week is “Sustainable energy for Brunei Darussalam’s prosperity”.

The Energy White Paper was designed to support Brunei’s Vision 2035, promote career, employment and business opportunities in the energy industry.
It also sets out the targets the oil and gas industry have to meet by 2035, including hiring more Bruneians.

The Brunei Darussalam Oil and Gas Book, on the other hand, is a publication on the role models who encourage more Bruneians to tap into the energy sector. Apart from sharing their experiences, their main call is for youth to join them in contributing to the country’s development.

Jobseekers are encouraged to visit the Energy Week until Saturday, to gain more insight into potential careers. The EDPMO is looking to recruit more than 1,000 individuals at the oil and gas job fair.

Those looking for a job and register at the EDPMO booth, will be able to obtain a copy of the oil and gas book, as well as the chance to interact with the role models in Hall 1.

Over the week, a series of conferences, meetings, a forum and a youth dialogue will take place. The energy exhibition and oil and gas job fair will run concurrently.

MH370 ended in

southern Indian Ocean

Prime Minister Najib Razak officially announced the misfortune of MH 370 at 10pm, Monday 24th of March. Image taken by Edgar Su, Reuters

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s speech last night to announce the heart breaking news of MH370: “This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.

Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.”

My heart and my deepest condolences goes to the families and friends of the MH 370 passengers. Now the biggest challenge, apart from the families related, is finding the debris to help further in the investigation of flight MH370. This is such a national tragedy and after 17 days, the mystery has finally concluded. Al-Fatihah.

Message of Hope

The Malaysian Citizens Association (PWM) and the Malaysian High Commission collaborated in the initiative of the “Wall of Hope” where well wishers from Brunei can write down their hopes for finding the missing flight of MH 370. The banner is located at The Airport Mall and by night time, the wall page is already full of written and signed messages from members of the public.

James Lee, President of PWM, shared his sadness of the incident and his heart goes out to the family of the passengers. Also present were His Excellency Datuk Hj Awang Sahak Hj Awang Salleh, Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam and a representative from the Embassy of China to Brunei Darussalam.

Now with the heart breaking news just announced last night by Prime Minister Najib Razak, all hope is gone.

DPMM FC’s first loss

The ritual handshake before the match

What a match!!! Unfortunately, DPMM FC failed to gain any points and surrendered to their first defeat of the season to defending champions Tampines Rovers with a 2-1 score line. What billed to be the clash of the titans early into the season, it was difficult to predict the winner prior to the match with both teams having a perfect start to the season with three consecutive wins.

DPMM FC started well in the first half and they could have bagged a few goals if it wasn’t for the poor finishing of DPMM FC in the final third. Roberto Alviz scored his first goal for the club after a well placed pass by Tosi in the 6th minute. The home team were dominant in most periods of the first half and it took a while for Tampines Rovers to settle in. DPMM FC’s marquee signing player Roy O’Donovan had a couple of chances in the first half but failed to find the net.

The visitors did create some chances but the defence was well marshalled by Boris Raspudic and Shahrulrizal while Wardun Yussof had one important save to make from Tampines midfielder Shahdan Sulaiman’s effort.

One player that caught my eye was Azwan Ali who seemed to have settled in quite well in his left attacking side role. He had many possession and caused a few problems whenever going forward. I see a bright future for the former Indera FC player and with more games, he will gain more experience and confidence. He was involved in most of the attacking opportunities but his team mates couldn’t convert the chances.

The beginning of the second half didn’t have the same pace as the first but it was Tampines who were hungrier of the two. The visitors finally managed to break DPMM FC’s defence with a goal by Miljan Mrdakovic in the 56th minutes. It was also DPMM FC’s first goal that they conceded in the season after three clean sheets. The Croatian took his chance, firing a low shot after DPMM FC failed to defend a simple attacking play from Tampines off a throw in.

The goal woke up DPMM FC and the home team started to pour in attacks. Captain Rosmin Kamis had his effort hit the post and to safety. O’Donovan also suffered the same fate when his open scoring opportunity saved by the post to the disappointment of the crowd. DPMM FC could have scored the winner but it wasn’t their luck with those two chances gone begging.

Rodrigo Tosi ,who had been scoring in every DPMM FC match, failed to find the net but he was instrumental in most of DPMM FC’s attacks. One of his efforts almost found the net when his intended cross went across the face of the goal only for O’Donovan to hit the side netting from close range.

I would have thought DPMM FC had the upper hand when Tampines Rovers had all their substitutes with 30 minutes remaining. I have to salute to Tampines Rovers defender Abdil Qaiyyim who stayed on the pitch till the end and fought off every challenge when DPMM FC attacked. He suffered a nasty fall after clashing with Subhi in the 62nd minute and Tampines had already used all their substitutes. However, he came back to the pitch despite limping occasionally and held the defence till the end.

Tampines Rovers deserved their second goal after a sloppy defending again by DPMM FC. Shahdan of Tampines scored late in the game in 88th minute with a low driving shot after DPMM FC failed to clear the ball. The visitors early had two great opportunities. However, Wardun had two great saves from Miljan Mrdakovic in a matter of three minutes. Despite Tampines having lesser scoring opportunities, they made it count and for the fifth time, DPMM FC failed to beat Tampines Rovers at their home ground.

DPMM FC may have lost the battle but on the positive note, they played with conviction and maturity on the field and based on their performance last night, they deserved more than a draw. DPMM FC now will focus on their next match ahead against Geylang International FC at Bedok Stadium this Friday. DPMM FC 1 (Roberto Alviz) Tampines Rovers 2 (Miljan Mrdakovic, Shahdan Sulaiman)

DPMM FC faces Tampines Rovers

Clash of the titans tonight

It’s too early for clash of the title contenders match, right? This is an interesting scenario where defending champions Tampines Rovers will be fighting for all the points against another unbeaten side DPMM FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium tonight.

Both DPMM FC and Tampines Rovers have a perfect record with 3 wins out of three. However, DPMM FC enjoy a slight advantage due to a better goal difference and the host have yet to concede a goal in the S*League competition.

This also will be a match for DPMM FC to avenge for last season’s heavy defeat against Tampines with a 6-2 score line. Rodrigo Tosi was one of the players playing for DPMM FC back them and he shared how he wants to forget that memory of the huge loss last year. He’s currently happy with how things are going for DPMM FC and he gelled pretty well with the new import players. He hopes to score in the fourth successive game and more importantly the win for DPMM FC tonight.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game. It will be a great occasion and good test for DPMM FC against a more experienced side,” said Roy O’Donovan, DPMM FC’s marquee player. About scoring his first goals for DPMM FC, he already felt confident on his game and nothing has changed for him. He prioritizes the victory over scoring another goal.

The forward took some time to settle in DPMM FC and broke his scoring duck in the last game with two goals against Home United at Jalan Besar Stadium last week. He shared how they are a few teams that are title contenders including DPMM FC and the best thing for DPMM FC now is to stay focused.

“Experience is just as good as youth and speed. The match will be the clash of the two different styles and hopefully football is the winner,” was the response from O’Donovan when asked about the experience and the aging players of Tampines Rovers.

Steve Kean remains confident for tonight’s game

Will Rodrigo Tosi score for the fourth successive time?

DPMM FC’s coach Steve Kean doesn’t feel the pressure of facing defending champions Tampines Rovers. “No, football is about respect and you put the competition aside. We just need to keep trying on our own team’s abilities. We still have many steps that we can improved on. We are getting there. We are going on the right direction,” said Kean.

“We are actually competing against ourselves and get to the maximum, then obviously we have to play against our opposition and we can only get better. Last week (game) was better than previous game so we are really confident.”

In other news, DPMM FC management announced that there will be a lucky draw for the upcoming match on Sunday. The grand prizes are one return ticket to Jakarta for one and one return to Kuala Lumpur for one. The prizes are sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines. This draw is only eligible for paying spectators ($5 and $8) and the winners will be announced on the scoreboard at half-time during the match between DPMM FC vs Tampines Rovers FC this Sunday. There will be other consolation prizes as well.

It’s happening tomorrow. Mark your dates.

Here you go, peeps!! For your info, the Energy Week 2014 will start tomorrow (Monday) until Saturday at the BRIDEX International Conference Centre and also Royal Brunei Polo & Riding Club in Jerudong. Below are some sneak preview pictures on what to expect for this year’s Energy Week.

There are more than 1,000 job opportunities available so don’t be shy to bring yourself and apply for these spots.

The other thing I’m looking forward to is the copy of the publication entitled “You Can Make A Difference, Brunei Oil and Gas: Where Opportunities Await You”. It’s a series of stories shared by the employees on their experience working in oil and gas industry. They will be at the Energy Week to talk to the public and be role models for the youth.
