Sportsvan now available

Check out the price for the Volkswagen Sportsvan.. Good deal for early birds 😀

A week ago, we had the opportunity to drive the Volkswagen Sportsvan in Singapore before it launches in Brunei. Last evening, it was the official launch for the Sportsvan and it was a great turn out as well, considering the wet evening.

The new car was launched at Maju Motors Showroom at Telanai. Present was the Berrnd Siffling, Maju Motors’ General Manager.

Volkswagen is continuing its product offensive, this time in the segment of compact MPVs. The new Sportsvan is equipped with an interior that is as sophisticated as it is versatile (rear bench seat has 180 mm longitudinal adjustment), it offers a maximum cargo capacity of 1,520 litres and it impresses with its sporty charisma.

Technically, the Sportsvan follows the layout of the modular transverse matrix (MQB) from Volkswagen. And so it inherits significant advantages from this technologically advanced toolkit – the Sportsvan is very dynamic, with a short front overhang and a long wheelbase. Innovative lightweight design has kept vehicle weight extremely low, while the interior packaging also benefits from the MQB, with optimised utility.

The driver and front passenger enjoy an elevated seating position in the Sportsvan, yet the feeling is more of sitting in an elegant and sporty SUV than in an MPV. Special attention has been paid to the cockpit’s ergonomics, with a clean layout and sophisticated look being the result. In this Volkswagen, the worlds of compacts and MPVs meld together into a new type of car that offers more space for active recreation, family and the job.

Styling with extraordinary precision

With a bumper-to-bumper length of 4,338 mm, the Sportsvan is 83 mm longer than the Golf. It is also 126 mm taller, and marginally (8 mm) wider. These dimensions show that the Sportsvan has a clear positioning within the Volkswagen range – it is lower (-56 mm) and shorter (-59 mm) than the Touran, which follows a classic MPV concept with its three rows of seats.

The exterior dimensions of the Sportsvan, together with its completely new and sharply contoured styling, give it an independent and sophisticated look. With its taut body shapes, precisely drawn lines and large 17-inch alloy wheels, the Sportsvan transfers the Volkswagen design DNA to the class of compact MPVs. The Sportsvan also expresses dynamic proportions in its long wheelbase, and its extremely prominent character line unites functionalism and elegance.

Great variability in the cabin
Interior designers of the Sportsvan created a cabin that is as high-end and stylistically sophisticated as it is clean and fresh. While some of the instruments and controls may be familiar to drivers of other Volkswagen models, the design of the dashboard, in which all of these elements are embedded, was redesigned down to the last millimetre specifically for the Sportsvan.

The Sportsvan is a car which focuses on maximum on-board comfort. The vehicle is already very comfortable to enter, thanks to the wide-opening doors and the elevated seats. What is known as the H-point (hip point) of the front seats is 59 to 85 mm above the H-point of the Golf, depending on the seat height setting.

There is also very generous space for rear seat passengers, thanks to the extended wheelbase. Even people measuring 1.90 metres can sit comfortably, one in front of the other. Storage pockets and folding tables integrated in the backs of the front seats give practicality a further boost, and there are also three additional cupholders (two for standard size cups and one for narrower cups) in the rear centre armrest that folds up.

Another key feature is the 60:40 split rear bench seat that features individual adjustment of its sections. The entire three-seat bench can be adjusted up to 180 mm in a fore-aft direction; as an alternative, the seat on the right side of the vehicle (40 per cent) and the double-seat on the left side (60 per cent) can be individually adjusted over a range of 180 mm. In addition, rear passengers can adjust the angle of their backrests. The backrest elements are split 40:20:40, giving even greater loading versatility.

Cargo capacity is a very generous 500 litres with the rear bench seat in its standard position. When the two separately adjustable sections of the rear bench seat are moved to their front-most positions, up to 590 litres of cargo fit into the luggage compartment of the Sportsvan. With the rear folded down, a maximum storage capacity of 1,520 litres is available.

Technologically advanced features
The Sportsvan comes as standard with features like LED licence plate lights, an electronic parking brake with Auto Hold, cruise control with speed limiter, a touchscreen in-car entertainment system and a variable cargo floor. In addition, the car is of course also equipped with safety features that include seven airbags, ESP electronic stabilisation programme and safety-optimised head restraints in front (protects against whiplash injury).

Some other highlights include:
Proactive occupant protection system. If the system detects a potential accident situation – such as by the initiation of hard braking – the seatbelts of the driver and front passenger are automatically pre-tensioned to ensure the best possible protection by the airbag and belt system. When a highly critical and unstable driving situation is detected – such as severe oversteer or understeer with ESP intervention – the side windows are closed (except for a small gap). The underlying reason: When the windows are nearly closed, the head and side airbags offer optimal energy absorption and thereby achieve their best possible effectiveness.

Driving profile selector. A total of four programmes are available in the driving profile selector. They are: Eco, Sport, Normal and Individual. In the Eco driving mode, engine control, the air conditioning unit and other auxiliary systems are controlled for optimal fuel-efficiency. A coasting function on the DSG can also be used with the Eco mode; when the driver releases the accelerator pedal – such as on route sections with a descent – the transmission decouples, and the engine runs at idle. This optimally utilises the kinetic energy of the car. In the Sport mode, on the other hand, engine response and shifting points of the DSG are configured to be more dynamic.

Dynamic and efficient drivetrain. The Sportsvan is fitted as standard with a stop-start system and a range of BlueMotion Technology efficiency improvement measures that lower fuel consumption. Its new 1.4-litre TSI engine with 125 PS produces an impressive 200 Nm of torque from only 1,400 rpm. It enables a top speed of 200 km/h and a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds. At the same time, fuel consumption is extremely low at just 5.4 litres/100km in the combined cycle.

Brunei withdraw as hosts

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah (7th L seated), the president of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, in a group photo with fellow members of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) Council during a meeting at the Raffles City Convention Centre yesterday. Infofoto

The notice from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports

I didn’t see this coming but then again, it’s a wise decision and to be honest with themselves that Brunei is not ready to host the SEA Games 2019. It was announced yesterday by His Royal Highness Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, the president of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), and Hj Muhd Zamri Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani, BDNOC vice-president after the netball match between Brunei and the Philippines at OCBC Arena Hall 1, Singapore.

The confirmation came from the Brunei government that Brunei won’t be hosting the SEA Games in 2019. Even with four years to spare, the reasons stated were 1) lacking of sport facilities 2) accommodation and 3) preparation for the athletes.

I believe they probably missed out an important element but then again, all these reasons given also boils down to this unquoted reason – Budget. In my opinion, when budget is available and sufficient enough, these three reasons won’t be an issue.

I totally disagree with the last reason on preparation for athletes. Won’t hosting a prestigious event like SEA Games will boost more confidence and preparation for the athletes and mind you, four years or even six years is a great build up for a small growing nation like Brunei. It will ensure that respective coaches in Brunei will be focused in improving the athletes with four years to spare. Preparation is of course important but it’s not sufficient reason to put support the Government’s decision to pull out from hosting the SEA Games. Even with less proper preparation with the current athletes, they still send them to Singapore to compete. So what difference does it make if Brunei pulled the plug for hosting, right?

The decision also shows how poor the planning have been for Brunei. Two years ago, Brunei was given the opportunity to host in 2019 if I’m not mistaken. So that’s like six years ahead of time to prepare. The timeline hasn’t been the halfway mark but they took the easy way out by surrendering the given opportunity. Where’s the sense of commitment from the decision makers? Once you break that commitment, then you will also lose the trust from the community.

Well, on the positive note, this will be more excuse for Brunei to be more “prepared” to accept or bid to host the SEA Games in the distant future. Whether this will make Brunei more complacent, I don’t know. But it’s good to know that they are honest and blunt before more damage can be done.

On another positive note, Brunei have shown improvements in the netball competition and now they are guaranteed medals too (the first time for Brunei). Now how can we say that’s not good preparation? That’s heck of a preparation. Enough for my rant from Ipoh 😀

Yes, Brunei made it to the semi-finals and guaranteed a medal at least

Welcome Bernd Siffling 😀

Maju Motors Sdn Bhd, the sole dealership for Volkswagen vehicles in Brunei, today announced the appointment of Bernd Siffling as its new General Manager.

Mr Siffling, a German national, will oversee all aspects of the Volkswagen business operation in the Sultanate.

He brings with him over 20 years of experience in the global automotive industry. Having started his career in 1995 at Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles in Germany, he went on to handle retail and wholesale functions in Scandinavia. This was followed by various management positions for Mercedes-Benz in the Asia-Pacific region.

Prior to joining Maju Motors, Mr Siffling headed the parts logistics for a Japanese car brand, and then managed the supply chain for a Korean brand in the Middle East and North African regions.

Bernd Siffling, new General Manager of Maju Motors Sdn Bhd (4th from left) with Dionne from Volkswagen Singapore (2nd from right) and members of the local media yesterday

Chan Key Hong, the Executive Director of Maju Motors, expressed a warm welcome for Mr Siffling. “We are delighted to have someone as experienced as Bernd here in Brunei, to consolidate the growth of Volkswagen in the market,” he said.

Mr Siffling himself perceives a bright future for Volkswagen in Brunei. “I can already see that Bruneian car buyers are recognising the importance of choosing technologically advanced, high quality cars with zero compromises on safety,” he said. “We will further expand our product line-up in the near future, catering to a wide range of buyers, while providing an even higher level of customer service for existing Volkswagen owners in Brunei.”

I’m sorry I couldn’t be present yesterday as I’m still outstation and I’m looking forward to meet you in person. You will love our peaceful country and welcome to Brunei 😀

UBD are currently the defending champions of the tournament and they dominated their opening match where they defeated Politeknik Brunei 3-0.

In the other match later afternoon, it will be between UNISSA against Politeknik. Both teams haven’t won and it will be great to get at least some points to remain contention for the semi-finals spot.

RBC revamps DPC

The newly revamped Dining Privilege Card. Read more below on how you can get it.

DPC stands for Dining Privilege Card. The card has been around for many years but the abbreviation DPC has not really caught in the minds of many. It’s such a great privilege (no pun intended) that the DPC is worth to have especially if you are dining at the Royal Brunei Catering outlets. You can patron at Anjung Saujana (Brunei International Airport), Seasons Restaurant, Dynasty, Emperor’s Court and Fish & Co and enjoy discounts or earn points using DPC. This also applies to RBC laundry and dry cleaning services.

Few days ago, the DPC was relaunched and it was launched by Acting General Manager of Royal Brunei Catering Pg Hj Abd Rahman Pg Hj Mat Salleh who has been in charged for the past few weeks. Concurrently, it was also launching of the DPC website which was designed by Syensai Design. You can click here to see what DPC has to offer and it’s a very comprehensive and easy to navigate portal.

The DPC also has a facelift where instead of the classic blue card, it is now the gold coloured card. For existing customers with DPC, you can renew your cards at the five mentioned restaurants. As for new ones, all you have to do is spend $88 at any RBC outlets or you can accumulate your receipts up to $88 and you will be eligible for the DPC.

The event was also to commemorate the local media from TV to radio to newspapers and social media for their continuous support in spreading information on RBC’s promotion. It was nice to acknowledge and receiving certificates of appreciation from RBC.

Thank you once again and we all look forward to cover more of RBC events for the benefits of our readers.

Thrill yourself with Scirocco

One of the most popular models that’s doing well in Maju Motors, the sole distributor for Volkswagen in Brunei, is the Volkswagen Scirocco. The exterior looks sporty with awesome performance. The latest version has narrow headlights and striking air inlet at the front end design. The rear itself is pretty eye catching, sporting a twin exhaust pipe, striking lights and beefy bumpers characterise the rear.

Did you know the Scirocco model has been around for many years? But the makers have taken an evolutionary approach with its style and make it more appealing to the eyes of the younger generation.

You can visit the showroom at Maju Motors or call 265 5111 for inquiries. Or you can visit them at the Love Bug Carnival from 13th to 14th February at Maju Motors. Bring your family for some sweet treats and check out the VW models at their showroom. Do check out their Facebook for updates.

9th National Youth Day

His Majesty attends the 9th National Youth Day

His Majesty the Sultan awarding to national athlete Lee Ying Shi the Excellent Youth Award for being part of the Wushu Team. She brought home the gold medal for wushu at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar last year. All images courtesy of Fazizul Haqimie.

His Majesty The Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday called upon the youth to understand and to know how to conduct themselves in a manner that safeguards the nation’s dignity especially in the face of challenges presented in this era of globalisation.

The call was made at the ninth National Youth Day celebration held yesterday at the Indoor Stadium where His Majesty advised youths to take heed of the challenges of the 21st century laid out before them in the form of opportunities for change.

His Majesty said that the youth, whose numbers make up almost 50 per cent of the population, are ‘Agents of Change’ and in fact they constitute the group having the most potential to shape the nation in any form they choose.

“On the subject of change, all of us, especially the youth, must be cautious and wise in evaluating and choosing our options. Because not all change is good, in fact there are even some that we need to avoid, such as those changes that bring about a negative impact or ones that contrast our national aspirations.”

Before bringing about or creating change, the character of our youth must be clear, solid and forthright with an excellent foundation which is filled (immersed) with religious and cultural values so that later on, the changes that are decided on will not be overwhelmed by undesirable elements, said His Majesty.
“If pretence is evident in a certain change, then this change is not welcomed, because its presence will not bring about any good but instead will invite harm.”

His Majesty pointed out that this is typical, in the name of change, “If it is destructive in nature, then the society that receives it will suffer because of it.”

“We in Brunei, need to be careful in this type of situation. Seek and plan for change that is constructive, not destructive. Do not study or take example from lessons that are counterproductive, but study from those and they that are worthy of being modeled.”

“This is the ideal way of conducting one self. It is important that the youth understand this. Conducting oneself also means having the ability to take command of a situation when needed.”

This is where the youth must not take lightly any challenge that is presented before them, but instead embrace the call of this year’s National Youth Day theme which is: Bersatu Menghadapi Cabaran Abad ke 21.

This century is filled with many challenges, pointed out His Majesty. “There can be no escaping from these challenges, whether constructive or destructive. If constructive, it is only right that we welcome it with passion, however, if it is destructive, then it is necessary that we successfully reject and avoid it.”

“If we are successful in rejecting this sort of challenge, then we are our own saviours; protecting ourselves; and guarding our people and our country.”

The youth must step up and rise to become this guardian. Transform the situation with the best of interests. Let it be forever peaceful and pleasant, entwined with unity, harmony and understanding.

His Majesty also expressed his heartiest congratulations to the Brunei Young Wasps for their performance during the recent Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy.

His Majesty revealed that, “this championship was also recognised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) as the greatest youth football championship in the region. Undeniably this is a great achievement in the World’s Sports for Peace and Development agenda.” Text courtesy of Nadzri Zailani and Amanda Yap of The Brunei Times. Three individuals and a youth association were honoured with the annual youth awards during the Ninth National Youth Day celebrations yesterday.

This year’s awards included the “Youth Leader Award for Distinguished Service”, “Youth Service Award”, “Excellent Youth Award” and the “Youth Association Award”.

The “Youth Leader Award for Distinguished Service” was bagged by Mohd Zefri Ariff Mohd Zain Ariff.

The award is annually given to a candidate, contributing significantly to youth progress, and development. It is also awarded in recognition of efforts in shaping Bruneian youth to become competent, visionary and ethical.

According to his award citation, Md Zefri is actively involved in youth movements and has held senior positions with various associations in the country since 1996, including the post of Secretary-General of the Brunei Youth Council and group head of the Putra Seni Group (KPS).

He has also held positions outside the country, such as the Vice-President of the Asian Youth Council, and Treasurer of the Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation (CAYC). Md Zefri’s involvement in youth movements focuses mainly on arts, particularly in the field of theatre and drama, including writing scripts which see the participation of many youth. This year’s “Youth Service Award” went to Anwar Mohammad, founder and chairman of the Society for Community Outreach and Training (SCOT), a non-government organisation.

SCOT was first established in 2011, and while relatively new, the association has actively progressed through Anwar’s leadership, who has shown persistence, responsibility and commitment in promoting youth efforts in the country up to the international level. Based on his award citation, Anwar is also actively involved in the operation of community-based programmes which intend to create environmental awareness, and excels academically, having received numerous awards while studying at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD).

Speaking to The Brunei Times, the SCOT Chairman thanked the government of His Majesty for recognising the organisation’s contributions throughout these years.

“InsyaAllah, we will continue to contribute towards the nation-building, especially towards youth, through our projects at SCOT.

“Through our projects, we will help the underprivileged – any vulnerable groups within the community – so they can get out of the cycle of poverty,” Anwar said. The “Excellent Youth Award” went to national athlete Lee Ying Shi, well-known for being part of the wushu team, which brought home the country’s first gold medal for wushu at the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar last year.

This award is given to an active youth, contributing outstanding service as well as bringing honour to the country. It also recognises those who excel and put in hard work with determination.

Lee said that receiving the award was not a surprise to her. She said that she was a bit nervous and felt honoured while receiving the award from His Majesty, and intends to keep contributing to the country via wushu.

All the three recipients of the awards received plaques, certificates, woven fabric (kain tenunan) and $3,000 in cash.

Meanwhile, the “Youth Association Award” was given to the Putra Seni Group (KPS). KPS additionally received a plaque, a certificate and $5,000 in cash. Text courtesy of Nadzri Zailani and Amanda Yap of The Brunei Times. Images courtesy of Fazizul Haqimie.

VW mini roadshow

Check out the Volkswagen Tiguan TSI, Vento and Beetle at the Mall Gadong until 7th September

Volkswagen Brunei is currently holding a roadshow which began yesterday and goes on until Sunday, September 7. The roadshow is held at The Mall, Atrium, in Gadong, featuring three of Volkswagen’s latest models; The new Tiguan TSI, the affordable German-engineered Vento and the iconic Beetle.

Each of these model cater to different walks of life. The Tiguan TSI is a compact SUV capable of going through almost all terrains. After its recent launch, it has proven to become a favourite among those who are shopping for a reliable and quality SUV, especially because the Tiguan TSI is packed with features that should make the car cost a lot more than what it costs now.

The German-engineered Vento on the other hand, is the cheapest Volkswagen model to date. Powered by a 1.6-litre engine putting out about 105 horsepowers, this car is the best choice for anyone that wants to own a Volkswagen at a cheaper than normal price. This car was introduced into the Brunei market a few months back to help cater to everyone and to prove that there truly is a Volkswagen for everyone.

The iconic Beetle needs no introduction. The redesigned Beetle just portrays so much more than just a new Beetle. It portrays what a Beetle should look like and it brings back memories to some. With its low roof-line, the Beetle is also no longer a girl’s car, it is now a much sportier and more masculine car that can be driven by anyone. The Beetle which is available in Brunei now comes with leather seats giving the icon a much more luxurious look and feel.

So if any of these cars are in your wishlist, head on down to the roadshow at The Mall in Gadong and ask any of the knowledgeable sales executives to give you a quote on your new Volkswagen.

Another reason why you should visit the roadshow is that Volkswagen is giving away two (2) CBTL vouchers each day to the winner of the selfie contest. How do you do it? Check out the Volkswagen social media sites; Instagram @volkswagenbrunei and Facebook.com/volkswagenbrunei. See you at the Volkswagen roadshow.

Buy genuine printer inks

Marketing Executive of Concepts Computer Zul Abdul Rahman with the staff of Concepts Computer showcasing the Epson L-Series promotion

The most trending printers in the country – the Epson L-series. Why? It’s economical and it fits just perfect especially for teachers and students when it comes to their assignments. So I’m not surprised that Concepts Computer are bringing in plenty of stocks due to great demand and recommendations from others. The L series, which come in four models — L210, L355, L550 and L1300 — utilise low cost consumables which in turn ensures low cost high volume printing. With two sets of bottled inks, a print yield of 8,000 pages A4 sized prints is expected.

Good thing about the Epson printers is their durability and the refillable inks. Of course, the most affordable one is the L210 series which is valued at $228 and you can print, scan and photocopy. The great deal if you buy from Concepts Computer, you will get another extra set of genuine Espon bottled inks (worth at least $40 while stock last). So every purchase of the selected models ( L210, L355, L550 and L1300), you will get two sets of bottled inks. Awesome deal!!

Marketing Executive of Concepts Computer Zul Abdul Rahman added that third party modifications of printers are one of the main concerns for printing solution providers as it affects print quality, machine durability and unfamiliar refillable inks can be toxic, therefore Epson is putting long term effort in its research and development to curb the problem. Hence, this is a great awareness program to spread the disadvantages of using third party inks. Concepts Computer will not honour the warranty should their customers resort to using third party inks. If you are uncertain about the third party or having doubts whether the bottled inks are legit, you can drop by the Concepts Computer showroom for clarification.

So do remember to claim your free set of original Epson bottled inks when you purchase the selected L-Series. This is definitely a great buy for teachers and students alike.

Tiguan coming soon

The media and bloggers heading to Singapore for the test drive organised by Volkswagen Singapore earlier this month

That’s the beauty of driving Volkswagen. You will be spoilt for choices on what model to buy. A few months ago, I test drove the Volkswagen GTI and it is an awesome car indeed. Recently I test drive other models of Volkswagen (Golf Polo 1.2 and 1.4, Tiguan TSI and Golf R) in Singapore. Maybe the right word for that is “sakai” because it was my first experience driving on Singapore roads 😀 It seemed like an unexpected bucket list and I thank you Volkswagen Singapore for making that opportunity a reality.

Today I’m gonna share my experience of driving the new Volkswagen Tiguan TSI. If you know of the Touareg series, then Tiguan has similar design and features. Actually when I drove this particular car, I already have thoughts on replacing my 11-year old car 😀 The Tiguan TSI is almost a perfect SUV car for my liking and it’s also one practical car which is also ideal for my profession. I currently drive an SUV so it would make sense if my next car will be an SUV.

So what are the impressive factors about the Volkswagen Tiguan?

Firstly, the drawing factor for me is that the fact that it is an SUV. I actually don’t mind driving a saloon car but it’s always a bonus if I drive an SUV. Hence, among all the cars that I drove from Volkswagen, the new Tiguan caught my eye. The size is not as big as the Touareg and that’s how I preferred it to be. If you are opting for a mid-size range SUV, this is my recommendation.

Secondly, I’m always concerned about safety measures when it comes to driving. I know my close friends will find me annoying because I drive with caution sometimes. I’m not a fast driver per se but I still make sure that my car is in fine condition on the road. The plus points about the Tiguan is that safety level of this particular model. This Tiguan series have been named the SUV as its “Top Safety Pick” by New Car Assessment Program. For the record, this evaluation covers extensive measures in the areas of active and passive safety. There is so much that I can blabber on especially the multiple airbags and the seatbelt force limiters but I think you will get the gist of my hints about the safety.

Thirdly, the drive factor. Of course, I didn’t really drive full force like I did with the Golf R *lol* The latest Tiguan driving experience was simply worth the drive. It makes my current SUV feel so inferior but then again, it’s an 11-year old car. I drove this among the hills of Singapore and it was just amazing the power it has for the size of the car. It makes me want to test drive the Tiguan TSI once more in Brunei. The handling was also great during the curves of the hills and it felt that I was bonded with the Tiguan for such a long time, considering it was my first drive on the Tiguan.

Fourthly, the price of Volkswagen Tiguan TSI. I won’t reveal the price as yet but wow, I’m amazed how a quality European brand can make produce such an affordable price and I can guarantee you that this model will be a big hit in Brunei considering that it kinda caters to different markets such as the young crowd and also families. Of course, my category is the young one for sure :p

The Volkswagen Tiguan TSI will be launched this Friday so stay tune for updates on that. I highly recommend you to drop by Maju Motors showroom at Telanai this Friday and guess what? They will be having an open house also for the public on that day.

TEDxGadong

Chairman and Co-Partner of the TEDxGadong team Abd Malik Omar (C), Shavez Cheema (L) one of the inspiring speakers and the rest of the team posing for a picture after the press conference recently. Image taken by Nadzri Zailani of The Brunei Times.

A group of youths have banded together to bring in the first TEDx conference in Brunei titled ‘TEDxGadong’ to help inspire youths of the nation in making a difference.

During a press conference at a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf branch in the capital, the TEDxGadong team spoke to The Brunei Times about hosting the first ever TEDx in Brunei at the SEAMEO VOCTECH Building in Gadong on August 24, 2014.

With a team comprising mostly volunteer youths between ages 18 and 22, the chairman and co-partner of the group Abd Malik Omar said that they hope when other youths see them bring in the TEDx brand, they would be inspired.

“TEDx is about unearthing and exploring new ideas so it’s about time that we had our own TEDx conference. Despite us having the lack of resource and most of us being students, we still managed to do it. Showing that where there is a will there is a way,” said Abd Malik.

TED means Technology, Entertainment and Design, which is a non-profit organisation devoted to ideas worth spreading. TED has encompassed the corners of the world spreading ideas and bringing innovation leaders together to inspire the young and old, according to a statement by TEDxGadong.

TEDx is a programme for local and self-organised events, where the x stands for the independently organised TED events.

For the first TEDx conference in Brunei, there will only be 100 tickets for the event ranging from $5 to $20 which will be available for the public on Thursday August 21 at the Core, Universiti Brunei Darussalam Residential College.

Eight local speakers which includes Delwin Keasberry, Denny Ambuyart and Keeran Janin will be speaking about separate topics, and there will also be mystery speakers which will only be announced during the event itself.

“The speakers we chose have the ideas, energy and passion to be able to share their story with the audience. Their passionate about what they do and their contribution to the economy. For us it’s not a matter of age, it’s a matter of ideas,” added the Chairman.

According to the Chairman, helping to inspire the youth is a way for them to actively contribute to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s aim for Vision 2035 as they believe that the youths are the future.

The Chairman added that “through the TEDx event, we may not be able to change the world, but if we can make a one per cent difference to the society we live in, then we have to.” Text courtesy of Nadzri Zailani of The Brunei Times.

Das Auto revisited

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in News

Das Auto (Singapore)

Super fun. Though I had to be separated from the media and blogger buddies after 72 hours together, it was a fun experience nonetheless. A great company and an awesome host made the trip more fulfilling than it already was. Thank you, firstly to @volkswagenbrunei (Maju Motors Sdn Bhd) for flying us all over to Singapore and also to Volkswagen Singapore for taking care of us and feeding us well too. Not forgetting my amazing stay at Grand Hyatt in Singapore too.

The main reason why we are in Singapore is to test drive some of the cars that have been waves in Singapore and of course, in Brunei. It’s amazing the growth of Brunei with regards to Volkswagen models and there have been a major increase in terms of sales and growth alone in Brunei market in the past four months. In fact, what Brunei is experiencing was what Singapore experience a few years ago when VW suddenly became a popular brand in the Singapore market.

For this post, I will feature Volkswagen main showroom on Alexandra Road, Singapore. Now this is what I call a showroom. It’s like a one-stop centre and once you enter, you can feel that inviting feeling especially for customers and there was already a sitting area (plenty) just after you enter the showroom.

I was also amazed by the number of collections of merchandise under the Volkswagen brand. I managed to purchase some stuff for my friends who requested for it. We had a mini tour and thank you, Colin Yong, senior manager of Public Relations for Volkswagen Singapore, for the tour and also for taking care of us by the time we reached Singapore until departure.

We were also welcomed by Steffen Schwarz, Managing Director of Volkswagen Singapore, and he has done a brilliant job in positioning VW as one of the reputable brand in Singapore and he also has helped to push Brunei market to where it is now. Maju Motors Sdn Bhd have been achieving new milestones in terms of sales of units and they managed to record a consistent number of sales since May 2014 to July 2014, selling 100 units on each month. That’s an amazing feat for Brunei market.

Colin Wong then showed us three video presentations on the Tiguan TSI, Polo and finally the Golf R. So far, Brunei will be launching the Tiguan TSI by end of August while the Golf R have been sold out from the 1st two shipments but you will be able to order on the 3rd shipment. The Golf R is expected to make its way to Brunei by end of September.

I will share more of the experience of the Volkswagen cars in my next post and for now, just see some of the pictures taken during our short trip to the Volkswagen Showroom on Alexandra Road.

You can visit their website at volkswagen.com.sg for more details and for this weekend, Volkswagen is having great deals for Volkswagen pre-owned vehicles specially for the National Day weekend!! So for the Singaporeans out there, do drop by their showroom at Alexandra & Das WeltAuto Showroom from 10am to 6pm.

I need more “juice”

RA says the hardest part is to get the ball rolling. The momentum hasn’t been great. Blog wise I mean. The same goes for jogging. Once you take that mini-break, it’s hard to get the rhythm back but it does take one small step and eventually and gradually, you will be back in shape in no time.

The same goes for blogging. Blogging for 11 years already a milestone. I have lost that essence of what my real blog is all about. For those who have read my pieces before (before as in 8 to 9 years ago), the content was purely based on my thoughts and also my personal diary of the things that I do with my daily life and my social network of friends.

At present, it’s a different ball game. 70 to 80 percent of my content is based on social events and happenings in Brunei and outside Brunei that can be related to my readers. I probably would say 95% of the time that is that case because I hardly pour any thoughts like I use to and even the “Ugly Truth” segments haven’t been prominent enough to make up that remaining 5%.

I recently stumbled upon the Bru Blah Blah blogspot and it has been a while since I read blog different blog contents other than the familiar ones we know. I find this blog quite hilarious as they are quite sharp in pointing of observations in our Brunei culture on the things we normally do. I recommend you to get the blog out. These are the kinds of contents that I kinda miss and crave for at times. One blog that came to mind was the classic “Memoirs of a Poklen” and that has some excellent writing with a blend of humour too.

These days, because of the rise of social networks, the number of bloggers have decreased tremendously. Once, we had like more than 1,000 blogs based on the listed ones on Simpur Nation. Now, I can count on my finger tips on the number of active bloggers in Brunei. Ok, maybe slightly more than 10 and that’s a huge difference compared to a 1,000 back in 2005/2006.

I’m currently outstation and we just completed our overseas assignment on the recent Volkswagen test drive and the best part was that we were given the opportunity to drive on Singapore road which I never had the chance to do before in my whole entire life despite the country being my second home.

So a big shout out to Volkswagen Singapore and @volkswagenbrunei (Maju Motors) for making this trip an enjoyable experience and guys, do stay tune to our full report on our experience of the Golf cars that we drove yesterday. For now, you can check out the hashtags #volkswagenbrunei #vwbrunei for updates on your recent test drive sessions.

Though it was a short trip, we had fun driving the different models of the Golf and of course, we had fun among each other’s company. Image courtesy of AnakBrunei

Das Auto experience in SG

Yay!! Thank you once again to @volkswagenbrunei under the flagship of Maju Motors Sdn Bhd for hosting the media and bloggers in Singapore for the Volkswagen driving experience. This is my third automotive overseas assignment since I started my blog.

Today will be an interesting session as Volkswagen Singapore will allow us to experience some of the Volkswagen models on Singapore road. I would say this will be one “sakai” moment for me since I never really driven in the city of Singapore. Being it my second home, I frequent its public transport more and yes, if I were to drive, I would definitely lose my sense of direction.

I shall be updating more on the our driving experience with Volkswagen models (cars I meant). Have a great Tuesday, peeps!! Do follow me on instagram @ranoadidas for updates and also @volkswagenbrunei and their official hashtag #volkswagenbrunei #vwbrunei for our live updates in Singapore 😀
