Singaporean crowned champion

2016 World Champion of Public Speaking, Darren Tay Wen Jie

I’m still amazed the fact that the past three winners of the World Champion of Public Speaking have come from Asia. Amazing feat!! First we have the charismatic Dananjaya Hettiarachchi (from Sri Lanka) who won in 2014 and he will be invited for the Brunei Conference in October. The following year was Mohd Qahtani from Qatar in 2015. Two days ago, Darren Tay, was crowned the 2016 World Champion of Public Speaking in Washington DC and his story revolved around bullying.

Looking at his resume, I’m pretty impressed for a man of his age (only 27) to achieve many things. According to his website, he is a prolific public speaker, debater and professional trainer. He founded the Public Speaking Academy in 2009 and has led the Academy to scale great heights in the school and corporate domains; including the successful organization of the annual National Public Speaking Competition since 2010.

He even won the Toastmasters International District 80 Speech competition in 2009, 20012 and 2014 for Speech Evaluation and Table Topics. Amazing feat indeed. He has also published his best-selling public speaking guidebook “Express to Impress” in 2012 and looks forward to subsequent publications in the future.

I do hope he will be able to make it for the upcoming Brunei Conference as a guest speaker and hoping for a favourable response from him. If it is a yes, then we will three world champion speakers for the Brunei Conference this October. Wouldn’t that be awesome? 😀

Groves promotes Primajaya

Adam Groves with the cast and crew of Primaja at KBSentral last weekend

One of the lucky winners for Primajaya t-shirt during one of the quiz session

It’s less than a month away. The another locally produced movie Primajaya will make it to the local theatres on 15th September 2016. The movie was in production two years ago and I had a privilege to see some of the scenes during the shooting back in 2014. Back then, the good friend Seng Yee was one of the camera operators and I was interested to know how the scenes were shot and all. It was really good to know and appreciate what went behind the scenes and it was never easy since most of them were not full time actors and have other commitments. All of them from the crew and cast volunteered to be part of this project.

I remember two years ago that Adam Groves, the main man behind Primajaya (formerly known as Bahlol), shared with me that he has this project that one day it will hit the cinemas. He finally almost make that dream come true 😀 as it just weeks away before it’s being launched.

Adam Groves recently had a session with the public at KBSentral last weekend to share his experiences in producing his first feature film under the film production company Visual Dimensions Production.

Primajaya tells the story of a local teen who turned his life around after assuming a superhero identity named ‘Bahlol’ in order to fight crime in a fictional city. According to The Brunei Times, Groves reminisced his childhood years in Kuala Belait before moving to the capital where he found his calling for making films. He also shared with the audience the ups and downs he faced in the film industry before offering tips and wisdom to aspiring filmmakers.

Mind you, his upcoming feature film will also mark his 10th year anniversary in venturing into videography. The talk session also saw three lucky winners from the audience as they won Primaya t-shirts.

Good luck bro and see you when the movie hits the screen. All the best. Images courtesy of Visual Dimension Production.

Kumon turns one

Photo session for the students of Kumon Diligent which was held at Radisson Hotel to mark Kumon Diligent’s one year anniversary. Image courtesy of Kumon Diligent.

Yosuke Sagawa, Deputy General Manager of Kumon Asia and Oceania, officiated the event. Image courtesy of Azmi Zainal of The Brunei Times.

I was always curious how Kumon runs its session to their students and there are many institutions that help to educate young students. So what makes Kumon stands out? So I visited the premises, well their first outlet at BT Complex (near Times Square) and I met the owner Caley Lim as she shared on how Kumon Diligent works and I found it very interesting.

Kumon Diligent is a franchise from Japan and it has been a popular and also effective in grooming young children in improving their math and English. Let’s just say it’s an after-school enrichment program. The last I heard from Caley back in January, she has around 100 over students enrolled under her care and now it hs shoot up over 200 students. That’s quite a lot but she is assisted by her trained staff. It’s quite interesting the fact that the students were given tasks to answer on their own and only when required the trained staff will assist or guide them so the students can answer the questions.

Yesterday, Kumon Diligent celebrated its one year anniversary by holding an award ceremony for its students at Radisson Hotel. According to The Brunei Times, a total of 23 students across three categories — advanced student honour roll one, two and three — receiving awards acknowledging them for their efforts in tackling study material, which are above their current school grade level.

Caley highlighted that the event was also the eve of the school’s one year anniversary, and it represented the culmination of hard work and love for her team. She also expressed her gratitude to the students’ parents and the students themselves for their support throughout its first year.

In under one year, Kumon Diligent has seen over 200 student enrolments. As of June this year, 33 per cent of its students, who have been enrolled for seven months or more, are studying above their current school grade level.

Kumon Diligent is open on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and is located at Unit 31, Ground Floor, BT Complex, Kg Jaya Setia, Bandar Seri Begawan.

The school can be contacted at 7193231 or by email at kumondiligent@outtlook.com and congratulations once again, Caley and her team, for making Kumon Diligent a successful centre for young students. You can also follow on their Facebook page for updates or instagram @kumondiligent

The assistant in blue apron assisting the students with their work. The students, however, will do their own tasks and only ask for assistance if required. This helps them to be more independent on answering tasks given and also building their confidence along the way.

After their session, the students will clean their own area before another session by other students. It teaches them to be responsible too. Pretty good.

Caley Lim, the chief instructor of Kumon Diligent, is truly proud of the students’ growth and appreciates the parents for trusting Kumon’s methods of enrichment. The numbers do speak for itself. Keep up the great work!!

The Anfield Dream

HMD FT’s dreams of going to Anfield to watch English Premier League team Liverpool were realised after winning the Standard Chartered Cup 2016 following a 3-0 victory over Plan C FT in the final at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex last weekend.

The family-oriented team which comprised four brothers raced to a 2-0 lead after goals from Khairun Nadzereen and an own goal from Md Shahin.

The tie was as good as over after Ahmad Muhazzib bundled home to all but send HMD to Anfield to watch Liverpool play Watford on May 7.

The Anfield dream has come for HMD FT

After a Plan C FT player was expelled from the pitch and HMD content to sit back, the latter’s goalkeeper produced an amazing fingertip save with the ball arrowing to the top corner.

The father of the four brothers Haji Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Kadir, whose team was formed under his name, had planned to join the tournament but pulled out due to injury.

Nevertheless, he was still grateful that his sons had made it to one of the iconic stadiums in the world especially after the quarterfinal heartbreak last year in the Standard Chartered Trophy.

Haji Mohd Daud was wary of the threat of Real Five FC which he considered as favourites prior to the final but agreed that his team’s chances was tightly balanced after Plan C scraped through the semi-final contest through penalties.

“We never imagined that we would go to Anfield because there are a lot of strong teams in the competition. We also have young players and the other teams also enlisted players who had experience in the national team,” said Haji Mohd Daud in an interview with the Bulletin after the final.

“The boys in the team (HMD) play in normal clubs and in schools”, he added.

The OCC launched

Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) officially launched its Operations Control Centre (OCC) at Brunei International Airport last week.

On hand to officiate the launch as the guest of honour was YB Dato Paduka Awang Haji Bahrin bin Abdullah, the Minister of Development and Chairman of Royal Brunei Airlines.

As RB explained, at the Operations Control Centre the Corporate Business Unit and Operational Department handle the task of managing and coordinating execution of daily schedules as planned, while the OCC also houses the processes and personnel responsible for managing real-time operational decisions.

Its roles and responsibilities include proactively managing the impact of unplanned changes to schedules, providing quality service to the maximum number of passengers and directing the most cost-effective plan to return to published schedules.

Speaking at the event, Captain Saiful Bahrin Awang Bahar, Chief Pilot at RB Flight Operations called the launching “an important milestone”.

“As we are all aware, airline schedules typically do not operate as planned,” he said. “Hence, it is in every airline’s best interests to ensure that there is a proper management process in place to manage and coordinate the execution of daily schedules.”

Dermot greeting the pilots at OCC area

“OCC plays this important role for the day-to-day operations of all scheduled flights departing in and out of the Brunei International Airport.”

The newly structured OCC will see the integration of all the different but relevant departments involved, ranging from Ramp Handling, Reservations, MCC and Engineering Line Maintenance, in the same physical location, which they previously were not, Captain Saiful explained.

“In doing so, this will enable a more cohesive and coordinated workflow, as well as a faster and more informative decision-making process to help ensure the smooth operations of all scheduled flights.”

He added that, as and when required, the OCC can also function as a mini crisis centre able to handle disruptions far more effectively with all the affected departments in close proximity.

Speaking to reporters after the launch, RB’s new Chief Executive Officer, Karam Chand said, “The idea here is to get everybody into the same room and take advantage of all the technologies that are available.”

“I think by having people of all the key disciplines represented in the room, it helps in terms of decision-making. You can get to make a decision quicker, you can consider different scenarios. This is a live environment, you are doing your very best to have your aircraft flying as quick as possible. So by having all the disciplines, it really helps.”

“It’s really to make sure that we are looking after our customers,” he explained. “For example, in an operational environment, you would not normally see a commercial person, so now we are going to put a commercial person in this room as well. We’re always thinking about our customers ahead of everything.”

The outgoing Deputy Chairman and CEO of Royal Brunei Airlines, Dermot Mannion also spoke at the event, saying, “This is a state-of-the-art facility. Any airline in the world would be very proud to have the facility that we’ve now got, and as Karam says, in one area now, we have all of our key operations people present, which means they can monitor all of our activity across the network and do so very effectively.”

“It’s operating 24/7, so there could be 20 people operating in that area at any one time. In addition to the permanent staff in there, we have all the crews visit the area when they’re preparing for flights, so it’s a very active area all through the day and all through the night,” he added.

Also in attendance to witness the opening of the OCC were the RB Board of Directors and Darussalam Asset representatives as well as RB senior management and staff. Text by Danial Norjidi of Borneo Bulletin.

There are so many things that I wanna talk about this picture. It went so viral that even big names such as Mashable and the newspapers in the UK were talking about it. The sharing of the image on Facebook reached into the millions of viewers with thousands of shares. It’s just phenomenal reach especially for a small country like Brunei.

The image of the three female pilots was taken during their flight from Brunei Darussalam to Jeddah during the 23rd February, the National Day. It was stated by former Deputy Chairman of Royal Brunei Airlines, Dermot Mannion, that it was coincidental that the roster featured three female pilots then.

Dermot was very proud that the RB brand has become viral even after weeks of posting. This is also a testament that there is an increasing number of female associates in the company namely engineering and also in the management team.

The incoming CEO of RB Karam Chand hopes the number of female representatives in the RB’s work force will improve to 50-50 especially in the management section. Currently it stands in the region of 40% of female employment.

Keep up the good job, RB! I’ve always been proud being a passenger of Royal Brunei.

Wu Chun the face of BMW China

Wu Chun as the ambassador for BMW China

Very few people in the world had the chance to be a brand ambassador for world-class brands such as Coca-Cola, Levis, Guerlain, Canon, Osim, Mido Swiss watch, Disneyland, Gatsby, Seven-Eleven and few others. BMW China has recently chosen Brunei’s second biggest export after oil and gas, Wu Chun, our very own international superstar as their spokesperson, who is also a brand ambassador for Royal Brunei Airlines.

A new car for the modern family— the first-ever BMW 2 Series Tourer was officially launched in the China market. Its also the first time BMW China has appointed a celebrity as their brand ambassador and they have chosen Wu Chun mainly because of his signature cool-trendy, inspiring and healthy family man image in the eyes of the public which BMW needed for this new target market.

In the BMW Group centenary year, the launch of the fourth localized BMW product – BMW 2 Series Tourer is another important milestone, a marker of BMW Brilliance’s localization process and commitment in China. This new car addresses a new customer group, strengthening the leading position of BMW brand in the premium car market, taking on a full vitality for “The Next 100 Years.”

Anton Heiss, president and CEO of BMW Brilliance remarked, “The first-ever BMW 2 Series Tourer marks a significant milestone of BMW Group’s commitment to China. This car precisely captured the new consumer trend in China.”

Wu Chun who recently did a TV commercial shooting for BMW just right after he wraps up his first Hollywood movie in Australia shared,” During my TVC shooting, I have the chance to drive the first-ever BMW 2 Series Tourer and this car comes with an innovative concept, combining BMW’s signature driving pleasure and versatility, and how customer-oriented BMW is.”

The award-winning BMW 2 Series (iF Design Award 2015), stands out as the most dynamic tourer car in the class. The extreme dynamic bodylines add a cool and sporty harmony, illustrating the signature look of a BMW car.

Transiting to 2016

Kicking off the new year with a beach gathering with my tennis buddies and coach Aiman Abdullah at Muara Beach

It feels great to be back on the court. I really love tennis, even at this age of reaching the four zero, my passion will override my physical being. I have many deadlines but only little to do with blog related. Though I have many stories to share, I shall be focusing more on my final draft to complete my 10th speech project.

Toastmasters. My final speech project for toastmasters (Competent Communicator) is scheduled for next Tuesday, 12th January. If you are interested to catch and be inspired, you are more than welcome to catch me live at Brunei Speakers’ Club meeting at SEAMEO Voctech at 7:30pm. As a toastmaster, I’ve learnt not only to be an affluent speaker but learning the ropes of a true leadership in guiding and mentoring members along the way. It’s always difficult to break the stigma that many thought that toastmasters is all about “talking/speaking” in public and that has become their biggest fear than taking a ride on a rollercoaster. So it is always nice to hear guests’ comments that they benefited from being a spectator, witnessing how role players played important roles in helping others to grow with positive criticism.

It took me three years to realise this as I wasn’t being present (in my mind) during toastmasters meeting back in 2011. After returning back to the arena, I rediscovered a whole new game and only then, I saw the true core values that I aspired to be and I never looked back since. Hence, I’m here as a toastmaster to make a difference, be the difference, in aspiring others to take the first step to grow as a leader and we have many qualified mentors to guide you through that journey. A big thank you to Shawn Narcis for seeing and believing in me and now I have a huge responsibility as I’m the organizing chair for the upcoming Brunei Toastmasters Conference in October 2016. I’m excited and also nervous.

Employment. Today’s headlines seems to be bring some hope to our community. It read – “Unemployment declines by 7% in October”. This data was issued by JPKE (Department of Economic Planning and Development). But then again, they have reported that these figures doesn’t really represent that the decline means that the jobseekers have a job. There are factors relating such as the previous registered jobseekers have left for further studies and also a handful have not renewed their registration as job seekers. Hence, it’s not a complete data representation but it’s the most comprehensive data to date. I’m pretty sure that not all jobseekers registered themselves as “jobseekers” to give a more accurate assessment on the level of unemployment in Brunei. With the decline of oil prices, there have been a major shake up in the oil and gas industry with some private companies forced to downsize their operations, hence low employment opportunities as compared to before.

Other streams of opportunities. So much emphasis has been given on SMEs. Let me spell it out – Small Medium Enterprises. It was good news to hear that His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’zzaddin Waddaulah and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam said in his titah to call for a new body to handle SME. This highlights how we are too reliant on the Oil and Gas sector and did you know that almost 90% of our revenue generates from that sector alone. There were also changes in the some of the SME divisions in the Brunei Economic Development Board. Some of the divisions/departments from BEDB have been transferred to the Ministry of Energy and Industries. I’m not sure how the governing body of SMEs will run the system but it will be nice if all the separate bodies of SMEs to work under one-roof and bring out the best in our entrepreneurs. Let’s see how 2016 will unfold for them.

The new eye of Kiulap. There is so much difference when you compare Setia Kenangan I and Setia Kenanga II buildings. The latter is located next to Regent Square and it’s picking up pace in terms of retailers. It’s quite amazing how shops and brands are popping up in times of the depreciating oil prices. We have the likes of Pepperlunch, Tomato KidZ (kids furniture), Wrap in a Box, Nerdee Cafe, Games & Latte cafe, two Escape rooms, WoMen salon (co-owned by Wu Chun), Alsa Living, Yugo Desserts (coming soon), De Cottage and the newly relocated Euro Classic which hasn’t been opened yet. I’m beginning to like the selection and choices of shops at Setia Kenangan II. The only problem is that there will be more road congestion leading to Regent Square and Setia Kenangan II.

Wu Chun is longing back to be on the set after a two years hiatus

Wu Chun with Hollywood actor Chris Evans

Quote from Wu Chun: After taking a break from filming 2 years ago, i am super excited to be back and extremely privilege to be given a role in NEST 3D. Its my first movie where i will be working with a strong team of Hollywood professionals and no doubt that its going to be a fruitful experience for me.

This is also my first attempt on a 3D movie production and the fact that i am always a Sci-Fi movie fans makes me even more curious on the set up of this production which will take place mainly in Australia starting this month.

New tyre inflators

Hj Julaini Hj Latip, Board of Director of Stesen Minyak KOPPMB (third from left), Hj Mat Sarudin Hj Ismail, Head of Brunei Shell Marketing’s Retail (center) and Dato Paduka Hj Ahmad Kadi, Board of Director of Stesen Minyak KOPPMB (right) during the briefing of the new tyre inflators last Friday

When will it stop? We tend to take the small things for granted. It’s a norm that all those who drive will visit the petrol station at least once a week. The thing that we don’t realise are the tyre inflators that are stationed at almost all petrol stations for the convenience of the motorists should they want to inflate their tyres.

However, it’s sad to note that the petrol stations are also subjective to vandalism and yes, the tyre inflators are one of the targeted items – cutting off the hose or spoiling the gauge. For your info, the self-service tyre inflation is FREE of charge and sometimes patrons won’t realised that the faulty inflators were being vandalised and it’s beyond the control of the owners and the management since the inflators are physically located outside and exposed to the public.

This issue was raised by Hj Mat Sarudin Hj Ismail, Head of Brunei Shell Marketing’s Retail and the tyre inflators are provided by BSM to all the filling stations in Brunei Darussalam. Having said that, BSM will be undergoing a replacement program by bringing the latest digital tyre inflators and slowly, they will be installing to some of the filling stations in phases.

BSM are working closely with the their contractors and the Retail Station operators to implement a coordinated response on the tyre inflator equipment upgrading and replacement programme. The most important thing is that the equipment is safe and effective for the consumers’ benefit.

So I do urge the public to be more viligant and do watch out for the culprits who would tamper the equipments. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the service or reduce the vandalism, you can contact BSM at 277 4277 or email at BSM-External-Affairs(a)shell.com

Hjh Nurul Akmar Hj Mohd Jaafar BIBD’s head of consumer banking division and concurrent head of the bank’s CSR unit, Vivian Tie Suk Kee, Head of Rehabilitation Department at Jerudong Park Medical Centre, Wu Chun, director of Fitness Zone and Ak Danny, Marketing Officer of Jerudong Park Medical Centre during the press conference of the the musical broadway “Sebuah Perjalanan”

The Rehabilitation Department at Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) together with The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) and supported by BIBD, will be organizing a musical broadway, “Sebuah Perjalanan” as part of the stroke and cancer patient’s therapeutic group activity programme. The musical is scheduled to be held on 1st November 2015, which coincides with the commemoration of World Stroke Day that is celebrated by countries around the world every year on 29th October.

The objective of the project is to create the best situation and environment, to help patients overcome their disabilities through meaningful rehabilitation that kindles sheer determination, states Vivian Tie Suk Kee, Head of Rehabilitation Department at JPMC. A total of 53 patients started practising to prepare for this event since 21 September 2015 which will last for 6 weeks, although about 20 will perform along with staff of the department. The whole process helps patients focus on a task for a good cause through rehabilitative strategies to help them recover their function and not on their disability. We hope to encourage and motivate the stroke patients to continue working hard towards further reducing their disabilities and achieving a more enriched life after a disabling stroke condition, she added.

With their previous TGA performances receiving positive feedback and positive clinical outcome, the department decided to take the next performance further by organizing a musical play, involving stroke patients and staff of BNSRC and JPMC. The story of the performance was written by a stroke patient based on real events together with staff of the Rehabilitation Department that aims to enhance the public’s awareness about stroke, the disability following stroke, its rehabilitation involved and the important elements for a successful recovery journey, stressing the importance of having fast medical attention.

Wu Chun urged the public to support the event

Hopefully, they can spread the kind words and let others know more about this very sincere, yet meaningful event.”, stated Wu Chun previously. Live music will be supported by the amazing Uniq Band from Pusat Bahagia who are all visually impaired and also talented musicians from Expression Music Academy.

Meanwhile, Ak Danny Pg Tajuddin, Head of Marketing of JPMC stated, “The event will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) and is open to public with a ticket fee of BND25 (Balcony seats and free T-Shirt designed and autographed by Wu Chun), BND15 (Front row) and BND10 (Back row). All proceeds from this event will be donated to a charity organisation, BIBD ALAF. This initiative is fully supported by BNSRC’s Management. Wu Chun meets MJ

Wu Chun with Michael Jordan and other celebrities in Shanghai

Wu Chun’s a big fan of MJ
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Air Jordan, Jordan Brand has officially launched the Jordan House of Flight in Shanghai. The venue features a number of installations and interactive fan experiences. They include a gallery from the world-renowned Walter Iooss, the “poet laureate of the sports world,” representing the first time Jordan brand has showcase these images in the Greater China region; the Wall of Jordan, featuring paintings from the artist Michael Lau; and the Hall of Greatness, displaying Jordan innovations, products, and significant moments from the history of Jordan Brand; and the Jordan Brand athlete promenade, showcasing the Jordan Brand family of athletes.

As the host city for a lavish celebration of the 30th anniversary of Air Jordan, Shanghai went all out, even going so far as to adjust the city’s skyline with bright emerald lights. Highlights from the festivities included a conversation with Michael Jordan and Tinker Hatfield, as well as visits from Roger Federer, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Liu Xiang, Li Na, and Jordan signature athletes Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. The Jordan House of Flight space also showcased experiences like the Last Shot of MJ, which allows 12 specially chosen TEAM 23 which consist of sports star such as Li Na and Liu Xiang together with super stars from the entertainment industry such as Wu Chun, Will Pan,etc to choose one of MJ’s breathtaking game-winning shots, complete with scene reproduction through LED screens that simulate defensive players and the expectant fans watching in the stands.

Although it’s hard to believe, it’s been three long decades since a young, high-flying, gold chain wearing Michael Jordan first entered the NBA as a member of the Chicago Bulls in 1985. His inaugural season with the team, which happened to end with Rookie of the Year honors, set in motion all that we know today. And by that we refer to Jordan Brand – the groundbreaking company that has revolutionized footwear both on and off the court. A cultural staple as important as any with a 30 year history, celebrates its pearl anniversary with one of its more celebrated components in mind – its fans.

Jordan‘s 30th anniversary festivities in Shanghai kicked off with a bang, highlighted the unveiling of the amazing Jordan House of Flight. The coda wasn’t shabby either, as Michael Jordan himself — along with Nike design legend Tinker Hatfield in tow — sat down with Ahmad Rashad for a free-flowing conversation. Making his first appearance in China after an 11-year absence, MJ reflected on the evolution of his game during his playing career, as well as the collaborative nature of his partnership with Tinker.

So how did Wu Chun feel after meeting his idol?

Wu Chun: I actually flew to USA 12 years ago to watch his last few games in his NBA career. I even waited outside his restaurant for hours and managed to take pic with him but this meeting is different because it was such a privilege to be selected as a member in the Team 23 in this Air Jordan 30th anniversary and it’s one of the best birthday gift for me this year! It’s a dream come true and my next dream is hoping to have the opportunity to play one on one with him. I know it might sound impossible but miracles do happen and like what MJ said, ” Never say never because limits like fear, are often just an illusion.”

So what were they (Wu Chun and MJ) conversing about?

Wu Chun: After the event, we went to a michelin-starred restaurant to have a 4-hour dinner. To me, it’s once in a lifetime opportunity to get up-close and personal with MJ so i really took out the courage to intro myself to him. Ironically I was so surprised to know that he actually screened through the list of TEAM 23 and he knew who I was. I shared my excitement that I am such a big fan of him and how much he had inspired me since the day I became his fan 25 years ago!”

How MJ inspired his life?

Wu Chun: If you read my book – Ignite Courage or if you are a member of Fitness Zone, you will notice how much admiration I have for this super legend. I admire him so much not because of how well he had played the game of basketball but it’s more towards his unbelievable work ethic, charismatic leadership skills, philanthropic responsibility and the strong desire to make his weaknesses into his strength. I thanked him for coming into my life as a great role model and hope I can follow his footsteps to be a good role model for others as well.”

Kamalia, Aaron representing Div K

The Brunei Toastmasters with Datin during the Division K contest at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Reuben Chin, Division Director of Division K, Rozana Yunos runner-up in Humourous, Kamalia Kamaruzaman Division K champion in Humourous, Aaron Division K champion in evaluation and second runner up in humourous, Laurence Dumling, runner up in evaluation, Pranika Lama, second runner up in evaluation, Arthur, Contest Chair of the contest and Suzana the Chief Judge of the contest

Two weeks ago, I was in Kota Kinabalu with my fellow toastmasters buddies to support our representatives from Brunei Darussalam (Area K6) in the Humourous Speech and Evaluation Speech Contest in Division K (Brunei, Sabah, Labuan). The representatives were Rozana Dato Paduka Hj Yunos for Humurous Speech and Pranika Lama for Speech Evaluation.

The competition was pretty tough as it could have been anyone’s game especially the top three. Rozana’s idea of the F word caught us with laughters while Aaron shared his experience with the dentist and survived to share in the Humourous Speech contest. However, both couldn’t earned enough points as the judges chose Kamilia’s journey as a single lady. Yes, she was by far the most animated lady and she deserved the prize for her humourous delivery. Last year, she just missed out the first spot as Allen Ang (from Brunei) was the champion. This year, she came back stronger and she will now represent Division K in the Semi-Annual District which will happen in Bali, Indonesia at the end of October. Congratulations Kamilia Kamaruzaman.

As for the Evaluation Speech Contest, when I saw the line-up, I was only aware of three speakers and I knew it will be among them three – Pranika Lama, Laurence Dumling and Aaron. When Laurence was competing last year in Kota Kinabalu, I was already captivated by her presentation. She was just phenomenal and owned the stage then and she was the defending champion in Division K for evaluation. This year, it was a different story.

Aaron who has such a humourous personality, showed his flair and analysed the “how to collect your debts” speech where others have missed out on specific points. Pranika Lama did her very best as she struggled with the audio which distracted her flow of delivery but she still managed to come third. Laurence had another good run but she admitted that she wasn’t at her best that day but I really thought she did quite well and placed as runner-up. The winner was Aaron who was previously the Contest Chair last year. He is the only person to be placed in both categories – Winner in Humourous Speech and second runner-up in Speech Evaluation Contest.

The results mean that Kamalia and Aaron will represent our Division K in the final competition to be held in Bali, Indonesia. Nonetheless, I’m still proud of Rozana’s and Pranika’s journey in the competition and both have inspired me in many ways.

I also enjoyed the educational sessions in the morning though we only had a few hours of sleep *lol* Even those in attendance were very pleased that the sessions weren’t dry and quite engaging. So well done to the speakers (Reuben, Allen, Shane and Ruey) and also to the organising committee for the successful event overall. Now I can’t wait to fly to Bali and support both Aaron and Kamilia. Though my KK trip was less than 48 hours, I had a blast and mostly thanks to the people around me.

Coming soon near you. Recognise the logo?

I have been out of the local news for quite some time and recently I’ve been catching up with what I’ve been missing since my 10 days of hiatus from the Brunei scene. It seems there are many things happening though I claimed that it’s gonna be a slow month. This month of May is swamped with events and more food reviews. BHC Magazine will be turning 3 years now and there will be a huge event known as the KL International Hijab event at ICC starting Friday. I’m also excited about the new car which will be unveiled to the press from Ssyangyong which is a compact SUV Tivoli.

Rebranding

I always like when a corporate company goes to a rebranding process. Past two years, it was been Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) where the national carrier gradually change their overall look and appeal, bring a new level of hospitality as well as replacing some older planes with the Dreamliner 787. The same goes to another local Telco in Brunei formerly known as b•mobile communications. With the new name Progresif Cellular, they have been taking Brunei by storm in recent weeks with their aggressive marketing campaign.

Last weekend, Progresif Cellular opened up their new flagship store at Tanjung Bunut which was unveiled by the Minister of Communications. The Telco revealed their new logo and colour brand to have a refreshing appeal to the eyes of the public. Progresif Cellular have been gaining traction after announcing amazing offers such as FREE annual fee forever (now that’s a first) and now they introduce their handset and credit deals with Vivo and Huawei phones. I have strong believe that Progresif Cellular is heading the right direction and listening to the needs of the customers. Just don’t expect all the miracles at one time. They are indeed progressing step by step rather than not progressing at all.

Thumbs up to the stakeholders and the decision makers on Progresif Cecullar’s direction. You have certainly had me sold. Time to invest in a secondary smart phone.

Donations pouring

One thing great about our community, we have a sense of contribution especially when there are mishaps locally and internationally. We all are very familiar with the recent earthquake at Nepal which has taken thousands of lives and the country is still in mourning and in shock of the catastrophe. Many NGOs and individuals have taken steps to raise funds and also donating necessary items for the victims of the Nepal earthquake.

Last Monday, Raddison Hotel and Fitness Zone joined forces to donate items and handed over the donations to a representative from Nepal, James Shakya who is the manager of the Gurkha Palace Restaurant and Catering. He was overwhelmed with the kindness from the local community and they have managed to raise more than 10,000 kg of aid. As for now, they are in need more of medical aid and supplies. Those who can assist in this matter, you can donate to Fitness Zone.

KLIHF this weekend

KLIHF stands for Kuala Lumpur International Hijab Fair and it’s happening this weekend starting Friday. This will be the second event of its kind and it is being dubbed the biggest Muslimah Fashion Trade Fair and it will make its way at ICC. So what can you expect? It will feature more than a hundred booths from various countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Turkey, will gather local and international designers, brands, retailers and wholesalers, including textile, fabric and accessories suppliers related to Muslimah fashion.

There will be popular Malaysian Muslimah fashion brands such as Mona Din of Hajaba, Farrah Adeeba of Najjah and Madeena by Mizz Nina. I hope to see Nina as I knew her personally from the days of Teh Tarik Crew. I shall be updating more stories on this event pretty soon.

Wu Chun meets fans

Wu Chun with team RB at Manukan Island yesterday

Beaches, islands and seafood. Those were the things that Wu Chun suggested to his fans if they were to pay Sabah a visit. The celebrity is no stranger to Kota Kinabalu and he frequents the city with his family.

Yesterday though was a different matter. He visited Manukan Island in the capacity for the meet-the-fan session and over two hundred fans showed up yesterday. Wu Chun had the opportunity to address his fans and also interact with some of them.

He also presented prizes to the winners of the sand castle competition. The fans mostly come from parts of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong who bought packages using Royal Brunei Airlines. For the record, Wu Chun is Royal Brunei Airlines Brand Ambassador and he is currently enjoying his journey as the Brand Ambassador and thankful towards Brunei’s national air carrier for their support.

The meet-the-fan session was organised by Sabah Tourism and Royal Brunei Airlines with collaboration with the Sutera Harbour Resort.

Wu Chun hinted that the next scheduled trip could be to Singapore and Hong Kong. I also would like to thank Royal Brunei Airlines for making my coverage of Wu Chun possible. Till next time, KK!

Wu Chun graced BK in KK

Wu Chun with some VIPs during the official launch of Centrepoint’s Burger King last night at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Wu Chun will also be Wu Chun. People always say how popular I am just because I’m a social blogger. But if you are an entertainer or a celebrity, it’s a different ball game. I caught a flight through Royal Brunei to Kota Kinabalu and wow, the flight was packed with Wu Chun’s fan. This is no surprise that Wu Chun is the Royal Brunei Airlines Brand Ambassador, able to draw fans from all around the world with his presence. If I was not mistaken, some of the passengers were Wu Chun’s fans. Amazing!!

Anyway, my trip to Kota Kinabalu was by invitation to cover Wu Chun’s event and one of them is the opening of the Burger King outlet at Centrepoint, Kota Kinabalu. He was one of the special guest to officiate the opening of Burger King’s outlet at Centrepoint. To update you, the centrepoint outlet is owned by Brunei shareholders. Congratulations on the milestone and this is such a great opportunity to expand their business outside Brunei and furthermore, it’s in KK market which is bigger than Brunei definitely.

As for Wu Chun’s fans who came over for the opening night, wow, wow and wow… I have never seen such a huge crowd and I remembered the crowd in Brunei for Wu Chun’s movie Saving General Yang and that was already considered hectic. But last night at Burger King’s opening, it was very tricky to handle the crowd. Perhaps there weren’t enough security available and even Burger King’s staff had to help control the young crowd. I was surprised there were also male fans.

Before I end this post, thank you Royal Brunei for making this coverage possible and thank you Burger King for the hospitality.

Snapfeed facelift

Have you registered yourself at Snapfeed booth at Consumer Fair? Stand a chance to win these wonderful gadgets from Samsung

Recapped: Six months ago, Snapfeed launched their apps on IOS and Android. Six months later (now), they have totally revamped the mobile apps for the convenience of the users. Now you can browse with ease and the app looks more structured and easy to follow.

The new interface allows you to browse to content such as deals being offered, information such news and movie times (and even movie trailers). Other exciting stuff are such as their digital loyalty cards with the use of QR codes. For the moment, Snapfeed has dealt with their current merchants such as KFC, Freshco, Burgerking and I Love Yoo to name a few. Do download the Snapfeed app and see what’s on offer.

For those who registered at their Snapfeed booth at the Consumer Fair this week, you can stand a chance to win a Samsung Galaxy Note or a Samsung Galaxy S5. This is only applicable if you signed up at their booth this week till Sunday. They will also provide a free photo session featuring the me-in-a-box booth.

Snapfeed booth is easy to find and it’s located in front of the Plenary Hall at the Orange Zone. I guess that’s the best location as it’s the central part of the Consumer Fair. Have fun browsing through the app.

The Residence

You can view today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am to 5pm. It’s located at Spg 1202 Jalan Tutong, Tanjung Bunut.

The Residence made some great noise in the past week or so. The newly exclusive lifestyle apartments known as “The Residence” made an impact among potential buyers during the preview weekend. I had a privilege by Valor Property Agency to tour the apartment and I was quite impressed. Back then, there was one block still available but I’m pretty sure it has been snapped up by now.

It was developed by ISBI Development and Trading Sdn Bhd which was completed back in November 2014. The apartment itself has a classy feel with a great landscape and a swimming pool.

The size of the apartment is about 1,690 square foot and it has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen which connects to a terrace outside.

The apartment is located at Jalan Tutong, near Tanjung Bunut and it’s quite an ideal location too.

Following the overwhelming success of the developer’s sales, Valor Property Agency has secured a further sales release of units from investment owners looking to capitalise on the demand.

You can view today (Saturday) and tomorrow (Sunday) from 10am to 5pm. It’s located at Spg 1202 Jalan Tutong, Tanjung Bunut. For interested tenants, buyers or investors, you can call 222 2288, 242 2511, 875 2263 and 877 2263 for details.

Wu Chun at Paris Fashion Week

Berluti, the bootmaker since 1895, branched out into clothes last season under the watchful eye of LVMH-owner Bernard Arnault’s powerful son, Antoine, who is CEO. There’s certainly a lot of money backing this fashion horse, but that’s not to say the project was destined to be a success.

So hats off to the designer, Alessandro Sartori, who pulled of a luxuriant coup, improving on the last collection to give this nascent house a voice in the fashion conversation. Berluti, it said, is the luxuriant dandy. Sartori’s 49-piece-strong collection displayed perfect mastery in color. According to Wu Chun, ” I am a fans of Berluti’s shoes but after attending their fashion show this time and meeting with the designer, Mr. Sartori,  I was totally impressed by the Fall/Winter collection.”

Hues such as terre verte, sienna brown, Venetian red, soft plum, ultramarine, dark blue and gray blue melted together in beautiful harmony, in loose leather trenches, double breasted jackets, tailored pants, classy mottled brogue shoes or bright Dandy-like cravates.

Wu Chun together with the British Formula One driver and 2014 Championship driver, Lewis Hamilton and British pop singer Brian Ferry are among the front row guests of the Berluti’s fall-winter 2015/2016 fashion collection presented in at Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, France.

Besides Berluti’s show, Wu Chun was also invited to attend the Lanvin Menswear Fall/Winter 2015-2016 show. Lanvin owner Shaw-Lan Wang revealed she defied doctor’s orders to attend the luxury house’s men’s show in Paris on Sunday. “I have dizzy spells,” she confided. That did not prevent the sprightly seventy something from chatting up a storm with front-row guest Wu Chun. According to Wu Chun, “Lanvin Men’s Winter ’15/’16 Collection is still one of the strongest brand in menswear. They were the first re-introduce those wide legs trousers and that popular silhouette. I still love this raw edge. It’s a great collection! Good outerwear, good pants, good shoes.” The former member of Taiwanese boy band Fahrenheit said he would soon hit screens in “Dynasty Woman,” an epic Chinese romance starring Fan Bingbing as the 8th-century Tang Dynasty consort Yang Guifei.

Wu Chun Added, ” Attending the Lanvin show allowed me to meet Lanvins artistic director, one of the Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, Alber Elbaz and Lanvin men fashion designer Lucas Ossendrijver. It was also super exciting to watch the men’s model at the runway because thats also one of the reasons why i started weight lifting when i was 16years old and i am glad those models had inspired me because if not, i might not have started Fitness Zone and create a fitness revolution in Brunei.”
