Wu Chun with team RB at Manukan Island yesterday
Beaches, islands and seafood. Those were the things that Wu Chun suggested to his fans if they were to pay Sabah a visit. The celebrity is no stranger to Kota Kinabalu and he frequents the city with his family.
Yesterday though was a different matter. He visited Manukan Island in the capacity for the meet-the-fan session and over two hundred fans showed up yesterday. Wu Chun had the opportunity to address his fans and also interact with some of them.
He also presented prizes to the winners of the sand castle competition. The fans mostly come from parts of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong who bought packages using Royal Brunei Airlines. For the record, Wu Chun is Royal Brunei Airlines Brand Ambassador and he is currently enjoying his journey as the Brand Ambassador and thankful towards Brunei’s national air carrier for their support.
The meet-the-fan session was organised by Sabah Tourism and Royal Brunei Airlines with collaboration with the Sutera Harbour Resort.
Wu Chun hinted that the next scheduled trip could be to Singapore and Hong Kong. I also would like to thank Royal Brunei Airlines for making my coverage of Wu Chun possible. Till next time, KK!

I’m always pleased when we have guests coming in and they learnt of a toastmasters through means of my social media updates and blog post. And to see them turning up to our meetings (every Tuesday) show thats that we are doing something right for the community. We have broken the stigma that toastmasters is just about being a great speaker or just being a leader of your own but it’s the synergy and the positive conducive environment that allows an individual to lower down his/her shield, ego and fear. It’s not just about public speaking and hence I’m not surprised by the increase of new members notably Derby Teo, Rahul and Pooja.
Last weekend, we had a great time at Kota Kinabalu as we embarked in a training session conducted by toastmasters club in KK. Though I can’t comment much about the training session but the evening session with Robin Sieger paid off our dues and what a fantastic character he is. I saw him spoke last year at the Toastmasters International Convention in Kuala Lumpur and I was amazed then. The recent session was more intimate and I managed to catch up with him and talked about life. I do hope he does come to Brunei or perhaps we can invite him to speak to schools and our younger generation because he is a great testament and role model for success.
A big thank you to all my friends in toastmasters and especially to Shawn Cassidy Narcis and Ruey Narcis, the pillars of toastmasters in Brunei Darussalam, for their continuous support and guiding the young team to greater heights. 2015 will be an awesome year for Brunei toastmasters members and I’m very privileged and honoured to be part of the team and contribute back to the community.
If you want to know more about toastmasters, you can reach me at ranoadidas gmail.com and I can guarantee you is that toastmasters is a fun, enjoying learning experience. Below are pictures from our recent trip in KK.

Delicious aroma of coffee permeated the air as Baiduri Bank’s CEO Pierre Imhof and Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications, Mohd Riza Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos toured the newly opened, relocated Muara Branch of Baiduri Bank yesterday morning.
Mohd Riza was there as the guest of honour at the official opening of the branch, which was previously located at Bangunan Tiga Tingkat, at the ground floor of Al-Warasah Commercial Centre in Muara Town.
The relocation was due to the increasing number of customers and with it the demand for products and services from Baiduri. The new branch is twice as large and has twice the number of staff, and is now able to provide a full range of banking products and services to cater to individuals as well as businesses, and this includes complimentary financial planning consultation.
“The upgrading of this branch is part of Baiduri Bank’s branch network configuration project where we redesign each branch to suit the market segment and its surrounding area and demographics. The modern layout is designed to allow customers to carry out their banking transactions in a relaxed and comfortable setting. In addition, the bank seeks to craft a workplace that promotes work efficiency and employee wellbeing,” said Pierre Imhof in his speech at the opening.
He added that Baiduri made significant investments to the new branch — greater customer experience and accessibility — and he was proud to add that the Muara Branch is the first of its kind to offer the café banking experience with the adjoined “It’s A Grind” coffeehouse.
After the speech, the guest of honour toured the premises, lead by the Regional Manager of the Brunei-Muara District Alvina Chung, and the Branch Manager Alice Lee before retiring to the adjoining coffeehouse to enjoy a cup of “It’s A Grind” coffee and some brunch. The Temburong Adventure
Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, officiating the opening of the Rainforest Lodge.
Freme Travel’s new Adventure Course and refurbished Rainforest Lodge are set to welcome more visitors to Temburong National Park. Both these new facilities promise exciting activities and all the modern comforts of home in a pristine rainforest environment for both overseas tourists and local residents to enjoy while also creating more job opportunities and playing a part in boosting the local economy.
Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, officiated the launch.
Freme Travel’s Chairman, Pg Dato Sharifuddin Bin Pg Metali asserted that safety and environmental issues were uppermost on the agenda of making Temburong National Park a ‘must visit’ tourist destination, and that special attention will be paid to sanitation, waste disposal, risks of water pollution and safety.
Built in 2002, Rainforest Lodge has seen a surge of tourists from China, Hong Kong, and Japan, and was upgraded and refurbished recently in response to the growing demand of tourists. The lodge now accommodates 40+ tourists in new wooden bunk beds and a further 15+ in tents. It also has new terrace dining area and kitchen.
The lodge now employs 10 full time local Temburong staff, including guides, boatmen and a local caterer.
The Adventure Course highlights include a 15 meter flying fox, the high rope bridge, the hanging bridge across the river and a canopy tower for birdwatching.
This will give more vibrant and healthy competition with Ulu-Ulu Resort which has been around for many years and I love that place too. With many things developing in Temburong such as the Games Village and the much talked about bridge, there are many potential opportunities with the district.

The Ministry of Health and Fitness Zone will continue their partnership in promoting healthy lifestyle in Brunei, following the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Healthy Lifestyle and Physical Activities Programme yesterday.
The collaboration is to boost the effectiveness of the ministry’s Healthy Lifestyle Clinic Programme, aiming to combat obesity in the country. Under the new one-year agreement, which was first began in 2011, Fitness Zone will, among others, provide professional fitness instructions on nutrition and the right workout activities for participants of the clinic’s weight-loss programme.
Present to witness the signing ceremony at the Fitness Zone’s Kiulap branch was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Norlila Dato Paduka Hj Abd Jalil.
She lauded the collaboration that had been done with Fitness Zone. “The programme was successful, we want to continue it,” she said, adding that there were matters that the ministry could not provide alone. Giving example, she said, Fitness Zone provides fitness facilities that can help the ministry in carrying out its healthy lifestyle programme such as obesity control and weight-loss programme.
Fitness Zone’s Managing Director Wu Chun expressed hope that people who participate in the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic Programme could influence their family members and friends by letting them know of the benefits of living healthily. “With this, hopefully we can achieve our aim to reduce the healthcare costs in the country,” he said, adding that number of diabetes and obesity in the country can also be reduced. Zul Abdul Rahman, Marketing Executive of Concepts Computer, unveiling the new ACER Aspire ES1-311-C9T9 to the media
Check out that beauty
Now notebooks have become comparatively cheaper than before. I remember forking out at least BND 2,000 in the past decade with not-so-fast specs. Now we can buy a notebook for less than $500 with a quad processor. Of course, I’m still stuck with my favourite brand which doesn’t operate on Windows OS. However, I’m always impressed with ACER’s capability to produce powerful mid-range notebooks.
Today, Concepts Computer launched the new ACER Aspire ES1-311-C9T9 which is a great target for students and smart executives because it is affordable and a highly mobile notebook. I was already impressed with the look when I saw it from a distance. It sports a chrome mate finishing and it’s kinda light as well with a 13” inch screen size. What I love about the specs is the memory which has a 4 G ram, running on low-voltage so this gives more battery life to the notebook and I’m a sucker for power juice when it comes to my gadgets.
Portability. Of course, when we associate with notebooks, you can bring it anywhere. Now this model takes an extra step where you feel the lightness and mobility of the ACER notebook and you won’t think twice about bringing it. The batter life has over 6 hours and you can stay connected all day.
Productivity. It has 10 multi touch screen which helps you to navigate the screen intuitively. Do try out the Precision Touchpad and chiclet keyboard which improves accuracy and speed when used for time-critical work.
Multi-media. Play a game, record a song, play a song, streaming movies. You can do that on this ACER notebook that has HD LED display and graphics capabilities.
SKYPE Certification. Now this is interesting. Most of the recent ACER notebooks will have this label on them and the brand is very serious when it comes to quality on video conferencing. The model meets the high audio and visual standards for SKYPE Certification. So you don’t have to worry about the minimal background noise or even the zero echo. Cool stuff.

One of the cheapest ACER notebooks at Concepts Computer
Trust is always important and Concepts Computer has a high reliability factor 😀

Sanjok Moktan with the management of Olive Tree Company and Sanjok’s friend Edwin Liew (far right)
Pizza Hut Brunei inked a sponsorship contract for Professional golfer, Sanjok Moktan on 10th December 2014 for his 2015 ASEAN PGA tour with a “commitment to help an individual relishing his dream.”
Sanjok Moktan grew up in Brunei, and started the sport of golf at 16 after being inspired by his father. Following his passion, he decided to pursue a professional license in 2010 under the “Professional Golfers Association of the Philippines” (PGAP). Costly tournaments have limited him to only 6 ASEAN PGA appearances within the last 3 years, limiting his advancement to ASIAN PGA tournaments.
His notable talent and ambition had caught the attention of Pizza Hut Brunei, and Mr Johnny Liew, Managing Director of Olive Tree Corporation decided to sponsor Moktan. Liew has a further vision to grow the local sports scene in the community.
In their part to giving back to the community and contribute to that vision, Pizza Hut Brunei and Moktan plan to host golf clinics for the youth.
“I played a lot of sports and took an instant liking to golf; it was like an instinctive call from my competitive side. Golf taught me more about myself, made me more aware of my mental state. With gold it’s more of a mental game. When you’re hitting a shot, it’s not like any other sport. Golf is an individual competition, you can do it for yourself.
Moktan is looking forward to participating in the upcoming ASEAN PGA tournaments such as the Sabah Master in Kota Kinabalu, PGM – ASEAN PGA in Port Dickson, Borobodur Classic Presented by Jababeka & OB Golf in Indonesia.

Sanjok Moktan ready to swing for success

Brunei will introduce marriage cards for Muslim couples as part of its new e-Syariah Court Management System.
Hj Hassan Hj Metali, Acting Chief Registrar at the Syariah Appeal Court, yesterday said a pair of marriage cards will be issued to every newlywed couple once the e-Syariah Court Management System is up and running in the next two years.
The cards will be the same size as identification cards, enabling Muslim couples to carry their proof of marriage with greater convenience.
“With the marriage cards, couples can easily show their proof of wedlock when needed. For example, if there is an inspection or ambush carried out by law enforcement, marriage cards will be accepted to prove the couple is married,” explained Hj Hassan.
Under the newly-enforced Syariah Penal Code Order, unmarried couples face heavy penalties for crimes such as khalwat.
Unmarried Muslim couples who live together or are caught in close proximity will be fined as much as $4,000, handed a jail term of up to a year or both under Section 196. Any non-Muslim involved in khalwat with a Muslim will also face the same punishment.
The Brunei Government and local IT firm ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd yesterday signed a six-year contract worth $1.75 million for the implementation and maintenance of the e-Syariah Court Management System. To read more, you can click here. Soure: Rabiatul Kamit of The Brunei Times.
A sample of a marriage card from Malaysia if I’m not mistaken
Though this initiative is favourable by the Syariah Appeal Court, my suggestion would be to integrate the data into one smart card where the information of the person can be stored in current so called Smart Card Identity Card.
The enforcers will have a device that can simply scan the Smart ID card and all the information even on marriage and his or her spouse picture will appear.
We already have a similar card for Driving Licence and now a marriage card, on top of the must have Identity Card. Who knows one day in the future that all government agencies can work together to make our wallets more room for other essential stuffs 😀

I haven’t been consistent in my updates on RA and the reason being is that I’m currently outstation and in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This is my third trip back to Siem Reap and it has been awesome apart from the slight showers. We were supposed to visit the temple with a bunch of friends but the weather wasn’t favourable. Today we will have another opportunity again to visit Angkor Wat during the day. Let’s hope for some good weather.
So peeps. I won’t be updating my blog for some time now so I can allow myself to enjoy the moments in Siem Reap which I have a few days left. Oh by the way, there will be a few Bruneians coming in to Siem Reap for the upcoming Angkor Wat Marathon. I do hope I have time to drop by and take some pictures. We shall see.
I would have thought my luggage would have been lower than 20K but no…. it hit the right spot 😀
For many years, we have been traveling buddies and truly appreciate the friendship that we have.
I’m actually quite impressed with the infrastructure of KLIA 2 (low cost terminal for AirAsia) because it seems to be more happening with tons of food & beverage outlets and shops around. It’s like millions way better than their older airport (LCCT).
This outlet, Hometown, is better than Old Town actually. Do try the steamed roti kawin.
Quite an affordable hotel at Tunes Hotel and I was skeptical in the beginning but the energy was quite welcoming and judging from the reception and the interior design at the lobby, I could tell the rooms would be just perfect for a short stay in KL.
Even the key slot for the room at Tunes Hotel look very savvy
The room is quite spacious and it costs below USD 60 per night
Arrived at Siem Reap last Monday and it seems the airport has not changed from the exterior bit. My last visit was back in 2011 and I was impressed that even my PR status passport didn’t require Visa unless you are staying more than 14 days.. Awesome!!! Thank you to the government of Cambodia for this.
Once you at the arrival hall, you will come across these kiosks and just look at the prices they offer. It’s quite competitive in Siem Reap where they have 5 telcos selling sim cards with data at very dirt cheap price. For USD 5, I could get a sim card and 3.5 GIGA data. Awesome!!! The line I chose was Cellcard (orange company)
A warm soothing welcome at Angkor Palace Resort & Spa. Actually, it doesn’t feel like a resort because there’s no beach around the hotel.
This is my current room and I will be staying here a few more nights. Pleasure to have Vincent Goh of Netcom Computer House as my roommate
We came to this desert place in city and wow, we were impressed with all the desserts. Highly recommended at L’Anexxe. Do google in and for those Bruneians coming down here for the Angkor Wat marathon, do try out this French cafe. There was also a small pool table for us to play.
Catching up with friends for dinner at Madam Butterfly.
One thing I like about Angkor Palace is the huge pool
Another amazing friend who I truly appreciate and thank you for believing, Pat!
The tuk-tuk ride to the city of Siem Reap and the riders are much more gentle compared to the ones in Bangkok. Make sure you don’t pay more than USD 3 per trip 😀
Few days ago this happened to my left eye and my eyes were pretty itchy too. I’m not sure if it’s the antibiotics that I have been taking because it stopped itchy after I stopped taking them.

The Energy Kitchen, Brunei’s first truly healthy restaurant is proud to present Jason Lew as its new Executive Chef. The addition of Chef Jason to our international team of both local and international chefs will further improve what is already one of Brunei’s Best Healthy Restaurants. Chef Jason has been in the food industry since he was 19, with professional training and very inspiring work experience in Australia. On top of that, he has previously worked for 5 star international hotel chain where he has the opportunity to pick up fine dining skills in the kitchen. Prior to joining The Energy Kitchen, he also made a name for himself as a home-based caterer under his brand The Fat Chef, cooking up creative feasts and hosting dinners for a wide variety of events and functions.
Inspired by The Energy Kitchen’s healthy vision and His Majesty’s titah, which is to build a healthier nation in the country, Chef Jason decided to embark on a transformational journey from “Fat Chef” to “Fit Chef”. He took up the challenge to do something truly different with food, that is to continue to create delicious food, but with a twist to make it truly healthy and exciting.
According to Wu Chun, “In addition to his new, healthier approach to food, Chef Jason’s newfound commitment to his health also involves undergoing rigorous fitness training and frequent brainstorming with the certified dietician at Fitness Zone. Together with The Energy Kitchen, Chef Jason is keen to show Brunei what ‘REAL FOOD’ is all about – fresh food, made from scratch with minimal processing, high nutritional value (Superfoods!) and lighter cooking methods (no deep frying!).”
Chef Jason added, “Their mission is to show Brunei that healthy food does not have to be bland, boring or plain. In fact, it is entirely possible to enjoy tasty, wholesome food daily, and continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
Wu Chun of Energy Kitchen, holding a new inspired dish, Grilled Chicken Satay Beehon, with Chef Jason of Energy Kitchen
In conjunction with the announcement, The Energy Kitchen is introducing a number of new healthy dishes that owner Wu Chun and Chef Jason have been working on. The new Grilled Chicken Satay Beehoon is a delicious combination of brown rice vermicelli tossed in signature Almond Satay Sauce, egg, blanched kangkong, and succulent cumin grilled lean chicken breast. The Beef Stew is slow cooked with root vegetables, served with refreshing herbed quinoa tossed with raisins and cucumber. The Energy Kitchen’s version of Gado-Gado, their Nihon Gyu (Japanese inspired) burger and few other new dishes will also be added to the menu.
The Energy Kitchen held its grand opening last month and it has been in operation for 6 months now. The response has been great, as the market for healthy food is growing fast and The Energy Kitchen couldn’t be more proud in helping to spearhead this trend. The Energy Kitchen will continue its quest to prove that you can go for a healthy makan that is good for your body and can be simple, innovative and always great tasting.
So why don’t you pop in and give The Energy Kitchen a try? Your body won’t regret it.

Synopsis of Amas
A local drama education organisation – SEEDS – is ready to perform its own original production titled “Amas” for their annual year-end activity.
SEEDS have been producing their own versions of some of the famous musicals such as Oliver!, Willy Wonka, Into the Woods, Wicked and Lion King for the past five years. This year, the team took an exciting challenge of writing their own original show set in Brunei.
The original production features “Amas” who is a 115 year old lady dreaming of the past. The audience will be taken back in time to her childhood years in Kampong Ayer, when exciting and challenging developments were afoot in Brunei.
With the background of life on the water village and relationships with her parents and family friends, Amas recalls a time when she was a mischievous 10-year-old during the beginning of schools and formal education, as well as later when she was 20 and training to be a teacher, and a discovery of oil that promised prosperity for all.
The play will surely take the audience on a memorable journey back in time, reminiscing the sights and sounds, traditions and music of old Kampong Ayer. Text courtesy of Hafiizah Maideen of The Brunei Times.
Tickets are still available at a priced of $15 each selling outside the Multi-Purpose Hall, Universiti Brunei Darussalan (UBD) and are available from 2-5pm and 7-10pm (excluding Thursday) until show time!. For more information and changes on time, don’t hesitate to contact SEEDS at their social media accounts Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/seedsbrunei or Twitter @seedsbrunei.

Sochi, baby :D
His Excellency Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to the Russian Federation (5th from left) with the Brunei delegates who will competing in the World Robot Olympiad 2014 (WRO) at Sochi International Airport, Russia. Click image to enlarge.
Finally, after 30 hours of traveling and transiting, I managed to check in to my room for the next few nights in Sochi, Russia. I didn’t expect to fly to Europe in 2014 and sometimes life is just amazing especially when you least expected it. I had mixed feelings about flying to Russia because 1) it’s just too far 2) my PR status but once I landed safely and passed the Russian immigration, my mood started to shift and appreciate the moment that I’m actually physically in Russia.
My trip is being sponsored for the coverage of Brunei’s involvement in the World Robot Olympiad 2014 which is being held in Sochi, Russia. Some of you might recall the Sochi Winter Games that took place a few months ago. Initially, the WRO event was supposed to be held at Moscow, Russia but only announced the change of venue a few months ago. Next year Qatar will be the host for WRO 2015 and we are hoping that Brunei, one day, will host this prestigious event.
A big thank you to the Brunei Embassy in Russia for helping us with the logistics especially in Moscow (transiting) and Sochi (upon arrival). It was nice to see the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Russia, His Excellency Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim who has been serving for the past two years as the Ambassador. He welcomed the Brunei delegates at Sochi International Airport (Международный Аэропорт Сочи) and thank you so much for arranging the transportation and checking in for us last night. The process would have been longer without your assistance.
For those heading to Moscow or parts of Russia, you can contact the embassy at moscow.russia(a)mfa.gov.bn or brunei.moscow(a)gmail.com or call (+7) 495 783 1926/7 and they are quite helpful too. I also realised that Russians don’t speak much English so communication can be an issue unless if it’s in the airport or hotel, then you will be fine. Once you step outside, it’s a different ball game. Even the Ambassador said that there are many steps to understand and learn the Russian language and even the Russians understanding of English is different from ours which can lead to miscommunication. We’ll see how it goes in the next few days but I’m quite excited to be in Russia and perhaps, do a bit of exploring.
The Brunei students will be preparing their respective projects this morning at the Exhibition Media Complex, Sochi which just a walking distance from the hotel we are staying (Azimut Hotel Resort & Spa). For your info, Sochi time zone is only 5 hours behind from Brunei time.
I shall update the progress on my instagram @ranoadidas and that’s a faster way for parents/families and their friends to keep up to date on the happenings of our Brunei representatives in the World Robot Olympiad 2014. I wish the students the best and a big shoutout to one of the students, Nur Amni Amanina binti Hj Narudin, who celebrated her birthday yesterday (by flying for 27 hours huhu).
Thank you once again, His Excellency Haji Haini bin Haji Hashim and his team from the Brunei Embassy in Russia for assisting us and also to our organiser, Hjh Faridah and Satinah Hj Abg for guiding us from Brunei to Sochi.
My first selfie in Russia #priority #chanceofalifetime
Thank you, Hanafi from the Brunei Embassy for assisting us during our 3 hour transit in Moscow Domodedovo Airport. It wasn’t easy to get around due to most of the language written is in Russian.
A tip when you arrive in Moscow. Watch out for the fraudulent taxi drivers. They will give a fixed fee then later on, they will add more charges due to the number of luggage you bring or the size of the taxi and so on. So you might be paying double the amount.
The Malaysian contingent is bring quite a few participants
A tired Nina after 27 hours of flying. Happy belated, Nina 😀 She celebrated her birthday flying here and there and it was nice of the immigration officer at Sochi to greet her before chopping her passport.
Thank Natalia who helped with our checking in at Azimut Hotel Resort & Spa. More pictures of the hotel later.
Faridah and Satinah sorting out the rooms for the Brunei delegate
Azimut Hotel is a full house due to the participants for the WRO event. Awesome!!

Let’s help Azeemah who will be trekking at Mount Snowdon to raise funds for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal. It’s good to know that she has reached her target and the event is tomorrow. Saturday 15th November. You can still donate for the good cause and good luck, Azeemah :))
A message from Azeemah’s fundraiser page: I, Azeemah Natasha Hj Mohd Khairul Zaki from Brunei Darussalam, will be trekking Mt. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales for the purpose of a charity hike organised by University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle. However, to make this possible, I need to raise at least 150 pounds.
Inside the war-torn country, an estimated 3.2 million children have been forced from their homes. Another 1.5 million children have fled the country and are now living in over-stretched refugee camps or villages. The most vulnerable children are those who remain inside Syria, who risk death, illness, abuse and exploitation on a daily basis. The humanitarian needs are incalculable, thus we need your help to raise money and awareness for Syria through the Human Relief Foundation’s Blanket for Syria Appeal.
Thank you for your time and generosity! May God bless you. End.
