Well, my body seem to be doing great because it seems a while since I actually organised a FIFA gaming tournament. This kinda of tournaments will take up most of my days and I will totally dedicate my time to make sure the tournament runs smoothly. Yesterday was the first day of the Hua Ho FIFA 14 tournament and around 90 participants took part in the event yesterday in the World Cup and Knock out category.
Today the tournament continues and we see the likes of Hanif Hamzah, a former champion in my tournament, who bowed out in the last 32 after a thrilling 4-3 defeat to Izzul. However, Hanif will rejoining today through re-entry and try his luck. There are new faces that are making headlines at the FIFA 14 tournament. Tomorrow will be the last 16 for both World Cup and Knockout category.
There are still slots for the Knock-Out category if you are interested. Good luck to all and thank you to @huahosports for collaborating with me on running this tournament. Also a big thanks to the volunteers as well. I’m truly honoured with your support and contribution.
So do drop by later today at Hua Ho Manggis Mall to check out the Football Fiesta and you can also get your face painted too with your favourite World Cup team.

CommunicAsia 2014 came to a successful conclusion on 20th June 2014. The event attracted international trade attendees and ended positively with visitors, exhibitors and delegates having plenty of opportunities to network, discuss current trends, witness product launches and gain insightful knowledge through the Summit sessions.
The Brunei Darussalam Pavilion received its fair share of attention with 2 product launches and visits by the Ministers of Communications from Brunei and Singapore. It also played host to over 1,000 visitors from Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Oman, Philippines, Indonesia to name a few. Most visitors were interested in local innovation platforms and market entry. Exhibitors at the Brunei Darussalam Pavilion agreed that this international platform provided an ideal opportunity to extend their business networks and gain insight into global market trends.
The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) was also approached to participate in similar exhibitions in the United States of America and Australia to explore the possibilities of entering those markets. AITI will consider future participation if it benefits and advances our mission to encourage ICT industry development

For the sixth consecutive year, the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) leads participation in CommunicAsia, and this year AITI has included eleven home grown ICT businesses in the Brunei Pavilion. On the first day, Brunei’s Minister of Communications, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, visited the Brunei Darussalam Pavilion. He witnessed two signing ceremonies and officiated the launching of two “Made in Brunei” applications. Also present to witness the signing ceremonies was Minister for Information, Communications and Arts of the Republic of Singapore, Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim.
On the same afternoon, the two (2) Ministers witnessed the signing of the agreement for consultancy services to develop an ICT Manpower Masterplan and training for the development of an ICT Industry Competency Framework between AITI and IDA International Pte Ltd. Signing on behalf of AITI was its Chief Executive, Haji Yahkup bin Haji Menudin while IDA International Pte Ltd was represented by Chief Executive Officer Mr. Vincent Wong Wah Kit. This partnership aims to analyse challenges and provide solutions to Human Resources Development (HRD), ICT manpower demand and skill needs and also build ICT human resources to meet national needs.
The second signing was a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalise cooperation between Halbase Company and Islamic Singapore Networks to promote “Made in Brunei” Islamic applications in Singapore. Signing on behalf of Halbase Company was Mr. Rushdi Dato Ibrahim and ISGN was represented by Mr. Fadzuli Wahab.
Both Ministers toured the Brunei Darussalam Pavilion and were introduced to the exhibitors before the Brunei Darussalam’s Minister of Communications consented to launch new products by PHMD Publishing Company and SocialBuzz Advertising.

Now.. something just doesn’t add up here. I was disappointed with their performance yesterday and furthermore, the audio was pretty bad. I still prefer Shakira’s song or even Ricky Martin’s. The opening ceremony didn’t raise any goosebumps for me. A bit of a letdown.

Finally after four years, the World Cup is back!! But am I hyped up as before? Hmmmm hard to say but apparently not that fired up. I didn’t even know that the opening ceremony was last night until 8 hours before the opening ceremony, thinking it will fall today. Anyway, what are my thoughts of the opening ceremony? Not really much to shout about but the costumes were interesting enough and it was good to see children and kids participating. Other than that, it’s kinda disappointing really.
Few of my friends from Brunei were there for the opening ceremony and the first match of the World Cup 2014 between host Brazil and Croatia. Awesome!!! One of my bucket lists was to actually travel across the world to catch a World Cup match one day. That day will come but not Brazil. So a probable chance in Russia in 2018 or Qatar 2022 that I would travel there. My friends will be flying off to another destination to catch Uruguay vs Costa Rica and if I’m not mistaken, they will be catching a total of 5 to 6 matches in Brazil. Oh man, I’m so jealous 🙁

Green bankers rolled up their sleeves yesterday to contribute to an important cause: blood donation. The event, hosted every year, was held at the Learning & Development Centre at Baiduri Bank Head Office.
This year’s blood donation drive was organized with the theme “Everyone has a Type” aimed to help replenish the low blood supplies faced by the National Blood Bank at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.
Senior Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Human Resources and Finance Division and member of the Baiduri Bank Management Committee, Ms Veronica Chong, said that blood donating is a good practice, and she has been doing it every year during the drive.
“There is an overall feeling of goodness and satisfaction when donating blood,” she said. “A lot of people are fearful of donating blood because of the needle but it’s not painful, and donating only one pint of blood can save up to three lives.”
“One advice I have for them is to stay relaxed. If you are scared of needles, look away, or better yet, talk with your colleagues, I’m sure they’ll also appreciate the distraction.”
The event was organised as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It is an annual event held to aid patients in need of specific types of blood urgently.
The Baiduri Bank Group is also an active supporter and major sponsor of the annual World Blood Donor Day.

On 12th June 2014, Fitness Zone and Nexploit Services co-hosted the signing and officiating ceremony of Plus magazine. A health and lifestyle related magazine that made its debut earlier this month.

The Brunei Medical Association will organise a Family Fun Day event that will take place at the Brunei Agro-Technology Park, Kg Tungku, Mukim Gadong on Sunday, 15th June from 6:30 am-11am.
Among the activities to be held include Tai Chi, Walkathon, Kid’s Treasure Race, Bouncers, Colouring Contest, Face painting, Tug-of-war, SNAG and other more exciting activities. Food vendors such as W Brownies, Food Remix, Baking Manics, Wings & Drumettes and Leeya Cookies will also be present.
The event is open to all healthcare professionals and their family members as well as the public. The Brunei Medical Associaiton (BMA) is a non-governmental organization representing the voice of doctors and the medical profession in Brunei Darussalam.
The BMA’s main objective is to support and protect the interest of its members, namely the medical professionals of Brunei Darussalam. Other objectives include: voicing the views of the medical profession in matters relating to the health and wellbeing of the Bruneian community; promote social, cultural, charitable and professional activities among members; supporting a high standard of medical ethics and conduct; and to enlighten the public on health issues.

The book launching began with the recitation of Al-Fatihah, and was proceeded with a reading of a short excerpt from the novel by the author himself, and a question and answer session.
According to Amir Falique, the book took about 9 months to complete. The sci-fi novel was inspired by his viewing influences at the time, a lot of science fiction, like Star Wars and Futurama.
Amir also collaborated with a local Bruneian artist, Zakaria Omar to illustrate the inside page. “The Forlorn Adventure” is currently being translated to Malay and in the process of being published locally by Dewan Bahasa. According to the author, he already has plans of writing a second novel, a prequel that would not be based in the science fiction genre.

Now this is a first – Japan winning the Thomas Cup. It’s one of the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world. Previously it was dominated by China who were the defending champions for 5 tournaments in a row. Malaysia’s last stint was back in 1992 when they beat Indonesia and the last time Malaysia reached the finals of the Thomas Cup was back in 2002.
I was actually hoping for Malaysia to win as I have a soft spot for the Malaysians after Dato Chong Wei’s failure to win the Olympics Gold in singles. However, it is also good to see a new breed such as Japan winning the Thomas Cup. They deserved it after beating the likes of China 3-0 in the semi-finals. The finals between Japan and Malaysia was also nail biting to the end as Daren Liew of Malaysia was pushed to the limits by World Number 25 Takuma Ueda.

The 19th Baiduri Masters organized by Baiduri Bank Group is set to kick off next weekend, from 30 May to 1 June and from 6 June to 8 June 2014 at the RBA Golf Club.
In conjunction with the annual fundraising golf tournament, Baiduri Bank Group and Numero Uno are organizing a Starting New at Golf (SNAG) golf clinic which will be held on 31 May 2014 from 7pm to 9pm at the RBA Golf Club. Open to children aged 5 to 12 years old, registration is free, inclusive of coaching fee and equipment.
The golf clinic will comprise of two categories – Graduates and Open. Each category is further divided into age groups of 5-8 years and 9-12 years old. The top three performers of each age group per category will be awarded with first, second and third prizes.
The first prize will be a golf starter pack worth B$175, while the second and third prizes will be Toys R Us vouchers worth B$100 and B$50 respectively. All winners and their parents will be invited to the Prize Presentation Dinner on 8 June 2014 to receive their respective prizes.

Last night, a commotion took place at The Mall at the ground floor. According to a witness, the man was running around and even pushed one of the person who was on duty, setting up a booth at the atrium area of The Mall. The guy was eventually taken into the custody of the police and escorted outside the building which I saw right after our Godzilla movie outing. An event I miss due to my DPMM FC coverage commitment. So here is the text taken from BT. Melodious songs from the 50s rang through the Mutiara ballroom of the Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam as Baiduri Bank Group celebrated its prestigious award-winning achievements with members of the local media yesterday.
Over 150 guests from various media agencies in the Sultanate as well as personnel from various government sectors such as Information Department and designing companies further vivified the dinner.
Attendees were treated to an evening of food, fun and exciting games such as sausage-eating, sundae-making, song-guessing, ball-shooting and best dress awards for both males and females.
For the lucky draw round, Fayezuana, a radio presenter from Kristal FM (KFM) bagged herself a Baiduri saving account with $2000 along with three others who brought home two iPad Minis as well as a Polaroid camera.
The rest of the guests did not go back home empty-handed as they receive instant dips.

One friend that I know of that doesn’t stop creating or recreating new ideas to reality is Keeran Janin. Our friendship goes all the way back to the era of the RA6 (a disbanded clique) in the mid 2000’s where he was under the employment of b-mobile communications.
If I look back at all the things he has done up to this very moment, I’m just truly amazed of the array of things that he was able to pull off even though some didn’t turn out be successful. He is a great iconic technoprenuer (IT entrepreneur) for the young ones as some of us don’t really like to deal with failure.
In my recent interview with Keeran Janin, he shared some of his successes and failures in his IT adventure including his recent trip to the Silicon Valley where Keeran stayed there for three weeks to meet up with the technopreneurs and angel investors.
I could tell that Keeran was high in energy during the interview and there was so much that he wanted to share on his US trip where he self-funded himself and took that leap of faith and just go all out to meet different walks of life at the Silicon Valley. Honestly, I love the vibrancy of the Silicon Valley and both Keeran and I traveled there once back in 2008 and it was a memorable one for us. This time, Keeran meant business and he is ready to swim with the big fish.
Three weeks in the US is not a cheap feat and Keeran was smart enough to use most of his resources such as air miles (for a subsidized flight) and cheaper means of accommodation so he could make most out of his Silicon Valley trip.

Now the question is why did he travel there again for such a longer period? Maybe, just maybe, Keeran kinda felt that he hit the jackpot with his new creation called Chrends (or #chrends) which actually means Chatrooms for trending topics. The IOS app was developed earlier this year under his new company Chrends Sdn Bhd and it is still in its beta platform but it has been garnering pace in terms of subscribers. So he felt it is time to meet the big shots in the US and see what road lies ahead of him.
If you remember the days of mIRC, #Chrends kinda falls in that category but in an app version with a sleek and modern feel to it. Basically you can create rooms or channels and chat with others anonymously without the need to sign up with your profiles. I’ve been using it for a month now and I follow the ongoing conversations on the main channel where people share their thoughts on local issues and so forth.
So Keeran’s trip in the US was to pitch his prototype (#chrends) idea to potential investors and angel investors. He traveled from one spot to another and ended up pitching to at least 30-40 investors. I kinda know how it works in the US. It’s totally different than Asia. Sometimes you could sell your idea in just matter of a minute or two and kabooom, you land yourself a jackpot and the investor will pump in money to fund your idea. In the US, things are much faster when it comes to decision making and sometimes the verbal agreements are on the spot before they get down to the formalities. Hence, it’s no surprise to why Keeran was taking a huge risk in his pitching adventure.
He was a bit tight-lipped about the outcome of his pitches but he hinted that he will reveal all pretty soon. But he did request for one thing is for us to download the #chrends app and do give feedback as that’s the most important ingredient for his app to tract more usage from subscribers.
Whether his trip was a success or not, the message here is that in life, everything is worth a shot. The experience itself will be self rewarding to say the least.

The annual charity golf event, which is in its 19th edition, is widely recognised as the biggest and most prestigious golf competition in the Sultanate. The tournament is just less than two weeks away.
Three categories – men’s, ladies and juniors – will be contested over two weekends at the RBA Golf Club in Berakas.
The men’s category is divided into men’s open and senior categories while the junior division is open to golfers aged 13-18. The first week of competition will be held from May 30 – June 1 while the second will be played from June 6-8.
Registration fee is set for $120 for adults and $60 for juniors, inclusive of green fee, buggy, breakfast and lunch. Players can play as many times as they like to improve their chances of winning and they are able to enjoy a 10 per cent discount on registration fee on their second and subsequent round.

Wow, I have to admit that I truly enjoy being in Seoul and the thing is I have not explore to other places of interest apart from three or four places yesterday. I do understand now why my friends keep saying to stay a bit longer or so. I have already extended two nights at least in Seoul which is a total of five nights. However, the Wednesday’s arrival didn’t really count since we arrived 10:15pm and by the time we reached the hotel, it was already past midnight.
I’m currently in Seoul, Korea for a rare, exclusive coverage of the Harley-Davidson where the principals and marketing side (international media) are invited for Dark Custom (Harley-Davidson) event tonight. The previous event by Harley-Davidson was back in October 2013 where Harley-Davidson celebrated their 110th Anniversary (Do read Izam Said’s coverage on that). So this time round I was invited by Harley-Davidson under Asia Emerging Market (AEM) Harley-Davidson for media coverage and of course, under the principal of Sri Sentosa Sdn Bhd, the sole dealership of Harley-Davidson in Brunei Darussalam.
So technically, yesterday was considered Day 2 but since I landed two hours before midnight, so I will still mark 1st of May as Day 1 in Seoul 😀 Yesterday was free and easy as I only had to pick up the media kit from Harley-Davidson. Hence, I took the opportunity to explore some parts of Seoul and learning a bit of the culture. Surprisingly, I have not picked up a single Korean language just yet *lol*
Anyway, I’m just gonna share with you some pictures I documented along my journey in Seoul.
Pretty cool that these taxis use gas instead of petrol. The grey taxis are slightly cheaper than the orange ones. The black (deluxe taxis) are the most expensive
Plenty of choices to choose from. Well, only three if you wan a dongle for your wifi and it’s on rental basis. The price range is around $5-10 per day depending how many days you want to use it for. There’s almost a $400 penalty charge should you lose the mifi gadget.
The 4G is pretty fast here and my limit is 1 Gig per day. Not bad 😀

We had a sneak peak of the new Citroën cars especially the DS line a few months ago at The Mall. Now it’s a reality that they already have an actual showroom for the event. Lionel Bernard Faugeres, General Director for Citroën ASEAN countries, was impressed that Grand Motors Sdn Bhd was able to create the showroom in 10 months.
The event was attended by His Excellency Mr. Jean Yves Berthault, Ambassador of France to Brunei Darussalam as the the guest of honour and he applauded Grand Motors’ initiative to bring French brand such as Citroën to Brunei and this shows that Brunei has confidence in French brand and he hopes to see more French products and services coming in to Brunei. He believes that Citroën will have a good impact, considering that Bruneians tend to buy or own more than one car.
I shall talk more about the specs of the Citroën DS line later on in my post and Grand Motors brought in three new DS lines. Congratulations Grand Motors on the launch of the Citroën showroom at Beribi.

This reminds me of math days in high school years. I’m never a fond of math subject but if I dedicate myself to it, I will do just fine, nothing more. Recently, Baiduri Bank has reached another milestone in the banking industry. In a banking environment especially Brunei which has been undergoing through many regulatory measures, banks in Brunei have to step up their game and be more “creative” in meeting customers’ demand and also falling in line with the rules and regulations which have been stricter.
So it’s great to see that Baiduri Bank has been given an impressive rating of “BBB+/A- 2” by an international rating agency, Standard & Poor’s. It was published in Bloomberg that Baiduri Bank has a “strong” business position, “adequate” capital and earnings, “moderate” risk position, “average” funding and “strong” liquidity.
In most cases, such rating will remain unchanged for the next 12-18 months and it’s very unlikely it will suffer a drop and Baiduri Bank ensures that they will sustain that rating and even better the current rating. Of course, this is a long term goal of Baiduri Bank and being it only 20 years old, this is considered a great achievement and also given the tough regulatory measures that the Brunei banking industry have to go through.
Such rating positions Baiduri Bank just below well known banks such as DBS, OCBC and UOB in Singapore which shows the great credibility of Baiduri Bank.

Imhof shared that the policy on lending will remain the same as it has been one of Baiduri Bank’s important and successful product due to its dynamic nature. With more healthy liquidity of Baiduri Bank, there are in a good position to lend more and maintain their lending policy.
Imhof also shared that the bank will be looking for opportunities regionally in the near future. He is proud that Baiduri Bank has been given the BBB+ ranking and this will indeed give more confidence internally and also to their loyal customers. Congratulations, Baiduri Bank, on your milestone.

The time is almost near. The Film Festival UBD 2014 is just around the corner and I can’t wait to see some of the short films done by UBD students and this is part of their assessment too. This is similar to the UBD Spectacle 2014 project (oops, I really have to pay them a visit too). There will be 8 short films in different forms of genre involving 20 students majoring in the field of Professional Communications and The Media.
So you will witness some of the innovative content the students muster in a short span of time. I was already impressed with the short films done last year by the students and I, myself, am a big fan of movies and I always love to talk about direction and film editing when it comes to movies. Of course, this is why The Popcorn Panel came about where you can catch my audio podcast on movies that I watch every now and then.

There are quite number of slots you can choose from to catch the 8 short films. You can see the synopsis from their Facebook page too. There will be 5 UBD made production and 3 local house production in all.
On Saturday 19th April, the timings will be 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm while on Sunday 20th April, it will start on 10am, 11:30am, 1pm, 2:30pm and 4pm. So if you have the time, do make the time. One of the short films that I enjoyed last year was “Roast Lamb” and it will be one of the short films to be featured. You can follow them also on instagram @filmfestivalubd2014
