Deadpool banned in Brunei

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in News, RA News

Movie updates

Deadpool banned. Ah, I was already looking forward to Marvel’s first movie of 2016. I had a feeling it will be on a borderline case and I was hoping it would be. However, judging for the trailers alone especially the R-rated version, censorship will have a hard time to pass such movie in Brunei. Well, I could say it’s a good move too as many parents are being irresponsible for exposing such themes to their young children.

Deadpool was slated for Tuesday’s release, a unique date release though as the conventional Thursday opening. The closest for Bruneians to catch Deadpool is across the border at Golden Screen Cinemas at Bintang Megamall, Miri. Then again, there is a dozen of cuts under Malaysia censorship board. My other option is to catch it in Singapore on IMAX. This is one sad news to know it won’t be released in Brunei and I’m already getting plenty of comments of disappointments especially those looking forward to Deadpool.

Mind you, this is a Marvel movie and this is quite rare for Marvel to produce a violent movie with the elements of blood. One thing for sure if the producers were to change the already-violent character of Deadpool, it won’t do his character justice at all.

Let’s not be too sad about it and let this pass. Yes, I was initially sad of the expected news. There’s always Miri next door if you are so eager to catch it and won’t mind the dozen of cuts. As for now, the chances of Deadpool being in Brunei is dead.

Guess who’s in town…

At least 5 boxes to pack this beast

Hulk buster. Remember this iconic character in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Well, I bumped into multiple wooden boxes with the word Hulkbuster printed on it and a few hours later, I saw parts of it being assembled last night.

Today the whole thing has been fully assembled and you can take pictures with it now at Times Cineplex at Times Square Shopping Centre. But I guess this is not redeeming enough after Deadpool has been banned from showing in Brunei.

In love with Hua Hin

Top 10 movies of 2015

Listen to the podcast on our countdown to the Top 10 movies of 2015 (Rano and Del’s) and also the disappointments and our horribles section.

Up, up and away…

My week stay at Sheraton Pranburi Villa at Hua Hin, Thailand. Truly love this place and the greenery.

Blogging away by the poolside and enjoying the breeze

This week has been amazing on many levels. The journey of learning, discovering and recovering have never felt compelling to the extent that I felt lighter, confused and amazed, all at once. It’s something that I couldn’t verbalize and I’m thankful to my friends who felt my expression. I am happy that I made this trip to the beautiful Hua Hin and thumbs up to Sheraon Pranburi Villa for their awesome hospitality since day one.

This is the second city I’ve visited this year and there are more to come (Vietnam, KL, KK and Taipei) in the coming two months for work and toastmasters. Despite the traveling, I’m slowly beginning to feel the pinch in terms of the Brunei economy. If SMEs are not doing well, then it will have downstream effect and even my revenue stream will have some impact, be it big or small. Now it’s the ideal time to plan for the year which I hardly do or just not my habit to do so. This is a reality and it’s something I have to be mindful on the decisions I make especially when it comes to time and money.

I haven’t been updating on a regular basis since my days in Hua Hin were quite packed and I chose the spare time to catch up with my buddies or just spend some alone time on my own. It feels great once again to type out my thoughts while enjoying the breeze by the poolside at Sheraton Pranburi Villa. How I wish I can blog in this kinda of environment, feeling peaceful and yes, my mind feels freer as compared to when I blog in the comfort of my room (the irony).

I kinda miss what’s going in Brunei after MIA for the past week. Usually I will be craving for local stories in the morning to see what’s interesting or what not. Now… mmmm… not so much. I choose to be in the moment and that is making the most of my time while in Hua Hin. Today’s news though caught my interest as it was on my IG feed where His Majesty the Sultan paid a visit to International School of Brunei early today. It was also the first visit by our monarch to the relocated ISB.

Now I tell you what I’m looking forward being back – tennis and The Revenant. Oh yea, I can’t believe the Oscar nominated film is showing in Brunei cinemas. Woohooo… I couldn’t manage to catch it while abroad but blessed it’s now showing in Brunei. Del Goh rated this movie as one one of his honourable mentions in his Top 10 movies of 2015. Who knows The Revenant could be in one of my Top 10 in 2016. And tennis, I just miss whacking the ball and I can feel that I’m out of shape especially in the fitness department.

Congratulations goes to Jaz Hayat on his new single which also available on iTunes. He has been MIA for quite some time and now he’s back with a bang, a new released single called “Dari Mata”. Just like Aziz Harun and Eia, he’s also another star in the making. We need more artistes and talents in Brunei. All the best, Jaz, and truly like the countdown on social media as a teaser to your single. Do check his single out and download on iTunes.

That’s it for me today and let me just enjoy the breeze and the music by the poolside. Life is just awesome 😀

DPMM FC fanfare

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office handed out medals to the winners at DPMM FC Football Fanfare 2016 at Jerudong Mini Stadium last Sunday.

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, graced the DPMM FC Singapore League (S-League) Football Fanfare 2016 at the Jerudong Mini Stadium last Sunday.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim took part in the fanfare playing under team International School Brunei (ISB) Sharks in the competition.
DPMM FC vice-chairman YAM Pg Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pg Anak Haji Abdul Rahim Pg Indera Mahkota Pg Anak (Dr) Kemaludin Al-Haj was also present at yesterday’s event.

Academy Kilanas B emerged the winner of the tournament after defeating Savilla Junior 2-0 in the final.

Among the teams that took part were AAG Junior, Academy Kilanas A, Brunei Sports School Soccer Academy (BSSSA) A, BSSSA B, BSSSA C, BSSSA D, ISB Baycats, ISB Thunder, ISB Quoka’s, Perda FC Junior, Setia Bakti, Super Junior Zaidana and SMS Jangsak.

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean saw the fanfare as an aspiration for the young talents in the country.

“Today’s event was great. We had it last year. It gives the young players a taste of what it is like to come to Jerudong where we train every day,” said Kean.

“It gives them a little taste and hopefully gives them the enthusiasm and the application to push hard through their age groups and get into their final team.

The head coach also added that the club are close to bringing in three new young players to fill up the rest of the slots in the squad.

“It has not been finalised yet but we are getting close… we have brought in some players who are from the club’s Under-19 team, a goalkeeper, a centre midfielder and an attacking player who are going to push hard to try to get into the final squad,” continued the Scot. “I always think that if you’re old enough to push to the end of the squad, it doesn’t matter if you are young (17, 18 or 19)… if I think they are good enough, they will play.

“They are not just here to make up the numbers, they are here to get to the start of it,” he added.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainuddin Nordin was on hand to give a speech prior to the matches yesterday.

“It is great to see so many eager boys and girls at this annual Brunei DPMM FC S-league fanfare and this is indeed a special kickoff to the S-League season,” said Zainuddin in his speech.

“It is super special because Brunei DPMM FC are the reigning champions of the S-League as we go into the 21st season of the S-League. On behalf of the Football Association of Singapore and the S-league, I would like to extend my greatest and heartiest congratulations to Brunei DPMM FC for winning the 20th edition and in doing so, the club has won the distinction of being only the second foreign team to have won the S-league in the 20 year history of Singapore professional football league.

“It is indeed a highly commendable achievement for Brunei DPMM FC and one that it thoroughly deserves,” he added.

The DPMM FC S-League Football Fanfare is the club’s annual programme held before they start off their S-League season. The country’s only professional club claimed their first S-League title last year after finishing second best in 2014 and 2012. They will face Singapore Cup holder Albirex Niigata FC (S) in the community shield on February 13 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. Acer Predator making its debut

Check out the new series of Acer Predator now available at Concepts Computer

The much anticipated gaming machine line, Predator, from Acer was officially launched at the Brilliance Hall of Concepts Computer last night. Present during the launch were Vincent Pao, the General Manager of Concepts Computer, Alice Chan, Financial Controller of Concepts Group of Companies, Pao Jia Wan, Business Development Executive of Concepts Group of Companies and Richard Soo, Acer Branch Manager of Acer Sales & Service, Miri.

So much to blog about the Acer Predator. I was already amazed when I saw the brochures a few weeks ago and last night, the Acer Predator line was launched to the media.

Definitely those into gaming and using heavy duty softwares, Acer Predator will tailor to your needs and satisfaction. The computers are also Windows 10 ready for end users.

Vincent Pao has a vision for his company, to bring the best IT products to the country especially from the Acer brand and he has kept his promise. He hopes the end users will be impressed with the Acer Predator as it will give “out-of-this-world” gaming experience to gamers. He applauded the team behind Acer Predator, the Predator Tribe, especially the Research and Development team in turning the machines into the best in its class.

Do check out the 15” and 17” laptops, sporting the bespoke design of red accents and a black chassis with geometric lines and soft texture coating. Not only are they of high performance but it also provides the Predator FrostCore, keeping the computers to operate at low temperatures so it won’t overheat. The other plus point is the PredatorSense gaming control panel so gamers can customise and control the gaming feature. The other term I learnt was the Killer DoubleShot, meaning you can enhance your gaming with the combination of wireless networking and Ethernet (cable). Hmmm interesting indeed.

When it comes to audio, the Predator SoundPound offers a combination of stellar audio features including up to four built-in speakers, two subwoofers and Dolby Audio surround to give the crisp sound on your gaming experience.

Special prizes for the members of the media

The Acer Predator 15

The Acer Predator G6

Let’s not forget the monitors they offer. The monitors are such as the Acer Predator Z35 (35” inch curve), Acer Predator Z34 (34” inch curve) and Acer Predator XB1 monitor (27” inch flat). I’m already impressed with the curved monitors because it will give you a panoramic view while you play your games or for me, watching movies 😀 The curved monitors sport futuristic aluminium based design with underflow lighting and mate finish look killer.

Now let’s talk about the desktops. Totally superb when I just looked at the specs. The Predator G6 is simply a monster of its own and it’s labeled as the Unstoppable War Machine. It’s powered with a 6th-gen Intel Core Processor and up to 64GB of DDR4 system memory. Interesting bit of the G6 is the Turbo button. Well, for instant overclocking, just press the button, and you will be in for a ride for some intense gaming experience. The overall design just look so wicked and cool. Time for gamers to show off their stuff to their friends. Of course, there is a tamer version which is the Acer Predator G3.

Do check out Concepts Computer branch at Kiulap or even at the Consumer Fair at their booth at ICC today till Sunday.

Milkcow enters Brunei

Well, if you are a fan of milk and you want blending taste in a form of ice-cream, Milkcow is your best bet. Last Sunday, @milkcowbn (Instagram) officially opened its door to the public and it was welcomed with overwhelming responses from the crowd.

One thing for sure was the free Milkcow icre-cream treats for the first 200 customers where they choose flavours between Milky Way, Milky Cube or Cookies and Cream. I have yet to taste other flavours but my next target is the Cookies and Cream definitely.

The flavours are imported to make sure that the ice-creams reached the same standard in other Milkcow outlets worldwide. Yes, Milkcow is a franchise from Korea and what’s great about the ice-cream is that it’s soft-served and plus it’s organic and complete with honeycomb.

The ice cream is made from organic, preservative-free milk. The milk is produced fresh daily and the ice cream batches are replenished after three days, as opposed to other soft serves that last for a month because they’re made from powdered milk.

The Milky Cube is perhaps the most popular item, which is topped with a piece of gooey, natural honeycomb. You can taste the hint of honey and yet it’s not too sweet. I’m surprised the chunk of honey can be easily cut and scoop to your liking to blend with every bite with the ice-cream.

Present during the launch were Managing Director of Milkcow Cho Kwang Sub, Master Franchisor for Brunei Hee Chong Moi and the business partner of Milkcow Brunei Kenny Wong.

Brunei becomes the 10th country to have Milkcow and the management believes that Brunei is a good market for their products.

Price ranges from $4.90 to $7 and it’s located on the ground floor of Times Square (near Freshco). For more updates, follow Milkcow’s Instagram @milkcowbn and Facebook at ‘Milkcow Brunei’.

Peugeot 2008

Check out the beautiful Peugeot 3008 Crossover. I’m also amazed with the affordable price tag on it too.

T.C.Y. Motors, sole distributor of Peugeot is announcing the official launching of Peugeot 2008 Crossover on January 25, 2016. Now you can view the Peugeot 3008 Crossover at the Upper Basement of Hua Ho Manggis until 31st January 2016. Another great news is this same model won the 2016 Dakar Rally. Awesome!! They have won 9 stages out of 13 and dominated the Dakar Rally. So do feel proud if you own a Peugeot 3008 😀

The new crossover by Peugeot is the first vehicle produced by the Marque that was designed and developed simultaneously by several geographic markets. With its worldwide objectives, the 2008 thrusts the Marque into a new dynamic, inline with its strategy of developing its crossover range and attracting new customers.

Peugeot innovates by designing the first urban crossover that is easy, exciting and brings an enhanced driving experience:

– An innovative i-cockpit, structured around the small steering wheel, combining high quality instrumentation and touch screen
– A dynamic behavior synonymous with enjoyment, with Peugeot’s ride and handling expertise,
– Freedom to go on mixed terrain due to raised ground clearance and protection.

For the full spec model, you will enjoy the blue backlit LED light strips around the panoramic glass roof and also on the innovative i-cockpit

The interior view of the Peugeot 3008

Innovative concept

The 2008 innovates by uniquely combining the driving characteristics of a hatchback and the strength of an SUV with an on-board area (passenger space, modularity and comfort) which invites you to enjoy each moment to the full. Equally at ease in town as on the open road, it can escape from the city with confidence due to its extended mobility features. Stimulating and versatile, the 2008 suits all customers.

Step into the light

Stepping into the interior of the 2008 means enjoying an elegant atmosphere and harmonious interior that carefully combining finely crafted trims and a unique luminous ambiance.

The blue backlit LED dials in the heads-up display and the LED strip around the panoramic glass roof provide subdued blue lighting give the 2008 a uniquely luminous appeal.

A unique style, combining elegance and strength

With its higher-driving position the 2008 is fitted with 16’’ alloy wheels. It has pronounced wheel arches that give it an appealing road presence and stance. The black bumpers and body sills serves to protect it from abrasions with the addition of front and rear body protection and side moldings on stainless steel.

The front face adopts the latest Peugeot style codes. Finely sculpted, the bonnet lines infer lightness, strength, and protection of the 2008, while the floating grille’ face has a solidity of form with vertical elements to harness aerodynamic performance and efficiency. The innovative headlamps are designed precisely to reflect the technical functions. Sharp and precise, they act with the bodywork to given the outline appearance of a cat’s pupil. Sculpted, they are at one with the front face, giving it an even more impressive, technological and individual character. This look is emphasized by LED day running lamps.

The rear also combines strength with dynamism. The boot volume, with a low loading sill, has above it a roofline with dynamic curves, inspired by the RCZ. The tailgate is wide and framed by lamps secured to the bodywork. Floating inside their housing, the three luminous claws are lit at their base by LEDs that appear suspended.

The latest-generation engines draw the very essence of the lightness and profiled silhouette to offer an exceptional driving experience combined with a true breakthrough in terms of fuel economy. Due to the technology of the new 3-cylinder petrol engines, the 2008 urban crossover stands out from the competition with CO2, starting from 99g/km.

Say no to child abuse

Story by Rabiatul Kamit of The Brunei Times. A young couple is facing heavy punishment after their abuse of a little girl came to light in a disturbing video widely shared on social media over the weekend.

Mohd Shahiful Rizal Bakri, 28, together with the mother of the four-year-old victim will be brought to court on charges of child abuse today, following their recording of the violent crime which led to their swift arrest on Monday.

The three-minute video showed the wailing child, whose hands and legs were tied, being physically and verbally attacked by Mohd Shahiful Rizal as her mother laughed in amusement.

It is unclear when the incident occurred and who uploaded the recording on the Internet, but the video went viral in Brunei on the weekend, causing public outrage and prompting immediate response from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF).

The couple were investigated by the Women and Children Abuse Investigations Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department after receiving public tip-offs. Both suspects are accused under Section 28(1) of the Children and Young Persons Act, Chapter 219, which carries imprisonment for up to 10 years, a maximum fine of $20,000 with or without whipping not exceeding 10 lashes, or both.

The victim has also been taken to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital to undergo a physical examination.

A representative of the Community Development Department (JAPEM) said the child is currently in safe hands, but declined to elaborate further. The victim’s guardian was not immediately available for comment when contacted by The Brunei Times.

The RBPF also urged the public to immediately report information on crime by calling the 993 police emergency line or visiting their nearest police station. Those in possession of the viral child abuse video were ordered to delete and refrain from circulating the material in accordance to Section 95 of the Children and Young Persons Act, which forbids the publication or distribution of any content which may compromise the victim’s identity.

Anyone found flouting the law can be punished with a maximum fine of $5,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both if convicted.

In protecting the safety and welfare of the community, the RBPF said all cases of violence are taken seriously and action will be undertaken against such offences in line with the provisions of the sultanate’s laws.

My views: Firstly, this is such a tough ordeal to go through, even watching the video. I skipped almost the entire of the clip because I couldn’t bear to watch an innocent young soul being abused by adults. It’s simply not right and I condone condemn violence. I do hope justice will be served. There’s also another grey area when it comes to sharing such videos. If the incident wasn’t being shared, then no one will know of it and tipped the relevant authorities. If it becomes viral, then you could be trouble with the law. However, kudos to the RBPF for taking swift action on the culprits and let me this be the message to all child abusers to rethink their actions and the implications it can have on their children.

Venus Chong to share her views on the negative implications of the Internet

Venus Chong. At 17 years old, shehas already had her fair share of experience in public speaking. Her journey started back in her old high school, STPRI, when she was in Year 8. She has been an emcee for assemblies, joined the National Debate Competition and the National English Language Oratory Competition (BELTA). Entering Maktab Duli did not stop her achievements. She became a part of the winning Upper Team in the Upper Level National Debate Competition. Soon after, she was elected as President.

Venus considers herself outspoken and very opinionated. She’ll be sharing with us how the Internet has amplified the narcissist in all of us. She believes that there lies a narcissist in each and every one of us, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Venus plans to make us realize, accept and love ourselves a little bit more.

Ahmad Syauqie will share his thoughts on cyber bullying

Ahmad Syauqie. He started out experiencing bad stage frights until in 2012, his interest in public speaking was peaked with the encouragement of a teacher. He won 3rd place in the National English Language Oratory Competition (BELTA) and later helped the next BELTA representatives and his peers in their science presentation.

Public speaking isn’t the only thing, however, that caught Syauqie’s attention. He realized that cyber bullying is growing to be an increasing problem in our society. The effects it has on each individual are left in the dark, therefore he aims to shed light on this situation. He hopes people would channel the kindness within and use technology for the greater good. Let him tell you how.

The KK Experience

It’s always fun traveling in groups because it gives a different sense of fun and bonding. This time, 20 from Brunei Toastmasters (BSC, UBD, BASC and Otters) traveled to Kota Kinabalu for a joint meeting with KK toastmasters, its first ever to be conducted. The toastmasters meeting followed the Brunei agenda and format to share experience with the KK toastmasters on how it is being conducted in Brunei.

I noticed some differences from Brunei and KK in terms of the agenda. Firstly, the table topic speeches take place in the first half of the meeting. Brunei toastmasters had this practice for many years until they change the format a few years ago and it has been very effective for speech evaluators and time management.

Secondly, the KK toastmasters have an invocator to kick off the meeting, toasting to Yang Di Pertain Agong and Yang Di Pertua Negeri Sabah and lastly to Toastmasters International. Interesting. We don’t practice that in Brunei.

Lastly, just a few things such as a Humour Master for KK side for a max of 5 minutes to entertain the audience and the different role of the Table Topics Evaluator where he or she focuses more on the Table Topics Master then briefly on the Table Topics speakers.

On Sunday, we had a leadership training on how to improve the clubs and also to retrain the executive committees (Exco) of the various toastmasters club from KK and Brunei. This training is normally carried out at least twice a year in hoping the Excos that attended can share their knowledge to their respective clubs.

Overall, a fruitful weekend I had and a big thank you to my KK friends, Phylicia, Laurence and Jerry, for bring me around last weekend. I’m also glad that Brunei Speakers’ Club has two new members now – Satra and Alfa. Our club is definitely growing but let’s not forget the older members who have played an important role in sustaining the club.
