Mum Bakery Cup 2014
I have been losing track of basketball for the past year or so. It really depends on my mood and lately I’ve been covering some of the exciting matches of the ongoing Mum Bakery Cup taking place at Batu Bersurat Basketball Court. Last night I caught three matches of which two of them are semi-final matches of the men’s division.
My predictions were almost correct and I won myself a wager against Winnie :p I predicted for a win by KYG Cougars but though it was a 15 point margin victory, the match was pretty close with EasyWay dominating in the first half. KYG Cougars were careless in the first half, giving away fouls pretty easily and also forced one of their import players No.99 John Rodney to sit out most of the second half because he picked four fouls in the first half alone. However, EasyWay wasn’t able to capitalise on the Cougars shortcomings as the Cougars’ bench players made a difference in the second half.
Much hype was given to EasyWay’s import player Raymond Canady and he sank in 31 points for EasyWay and it wasn’t enough as EasyWay lost 75-90 in the end. Canady almost scored half of EasyWay’s points and it’s pretty obvious that Easyway rely too much on Canady. Despite his 31 point effort, it was KYG Cougars No.88 Reil Gervantes who stole the show with his charismatic performance with 20 point, some important rebounds and assists. EasyWay had their chances with a slim lead by half time 43-14.
However, the 3rd quarter was the different story as KYG Cougars had a huge momentum scoring 25 points compared to EasyWay’s 13 points in that quarter alone. From that moment, I knew It won’t be an easy task for EasyWay to come back from the deficit. Now EasyWay will have to content for a 3rd placing play-offs against Westlake Tyre who lost against Dsunlit by 12 points in the other semi-finals.
Tonight do catch KYG Cougars vs Dsunlit in tonight’s final which will be estimated to be played at 7pm at the Batu Bersurat Basketball Court. Good luck to both teams. You can check out some of the videos I posted on instagram @ranoadidas
Raymond Canady of EasyWay had the biggest score of the night but couldn’t carry his team to the finals of the Mum Bakery Cup
Reil Gervantes of KYG Cougars won the battle between the two imports with his all-rounder game. Awesome performance!
The intensity of this match was from start to finish. I knew it was gonna be a heated match.
KYG Cougars No.99, another star import player, was celebrating from the bench when his teammates had a great run in the third quarter. Let’s hope he doesn’t foul too fast like last night.
It was such a packed crowd last night. People were struggling to find seats at the Batu Bersurat Court.
Ken Kho of Komala is managing Westlake Tyre who will now fight for 3rd/4th place in the tournament
Dsunlit was too strong for Westlake in the other semi-finals
I have so much heart for this team – Santonio Heat, formerly known as RA Rockettes and they will take on Koi Company and the winner of the match will win the Women’s division. Their match will happen today at 4pm at the Batu Bersurat Court
Santonio Heat in action against Hi Ti few days ago
Can Dudley and co get the victory today? Koi Company has many great players and a better depth squad which can make a lot of difference. This will be an interesting match indeed.
Last night Koi Company (with orange stripes) broke the century mark as they beat Falcons in the Women’s division. It was good to see their bench players having match time leading up to the big match this afternoon against Santonio Heat.

Preview: DPMM FC vs Hougang United FC
DPMM FC will take on Hougang United FC tomorrow night at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Finally the S•League has commenced after a long break due to cup matches. Tampines Rovers and the rest have caught up with DPMM FC winning their respective matches and now the pressure is back on league leaders DPMM FC to maintain or even increase the lead.
Tampines Rovers are now level on points with DPMM FC though DPMM FC can restore their lead soon tomorrow night. So do come and support DPMM FC tomorrow at the stadium and you can also stand a chance to win a ticket to KL and Jakarta sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines.
What Steve Kean has to say for tomorrow’s match.
RA: How’s the intensity between the Singapore League Cup and (now back to the) S•League?
Steve Kean: “It’s a different intensity (the S•League and the Cup matches) and it’s good that we are back in the league now. We have a positive experience from the Singapore League Cup and we are looking forward to the next four games. But we don’t want to look far ahead and make sure we get the results tomorrow and hope a great game.
RA: Tampines Rovers are now same points with DPMM FC. Your thoughts?
Steve Kean: “Yes, they are on the same points but we are ahead on goal difference. That’s gonna happen usually at the end of the season that teams are gonna play before us and put the pressure on us. It’s not really about them but it is about us maintaining the standards. If we keep the standards, we can beat anybody.”
RA: Will any of the loaned players to HBT be featured in Sunday’s game?
Steve Kean: “It is a possibility that they are made available and the U-21 are playing against Sabah later and we gonna see if we can borrow some of them. Of course, when the competition starts for real, we are not gonna get them.”
RA: I realised the training has vastly improved over the season.
Steve Kean: “I said that on a number of occasions that you have the advantage to see them training live but the supporters will see the intensity, the technique, the passing. I think everyone has improved and this is a good thing as everyone wants to play and everyone is challenging for position.”
RA: Aiming for a big win or a clean sheet?
Steve Kean: “Just a win. At this stage, it’s all about getting wins, however it comes. It doesn’t matter if we just score one goal against any opposition. We always like to get a clean sheet but we will try to increase the intensity of the game really quick and control the game. In the cup competitions, we have at least 60% possession and we want to maintain that intensity and we will have a successful evening.
DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean’s training scheme has paid off over the months
DPMM FC players have gelled immensely as a unit, physically fitter and mentally prepared for challenges. I’ve noticed the difference in their training yesterday at the Jerudong Mini Stadium.
Both keepers of DPMM FC had a good training session.

Not so Raya Fever
Check out the review of Guardians of the Galaxy with special guest Seng Yee
The usual common Raya words or quotes that I come across led to one thing – “It has been a quiet Raya”. Sometimes pictures don’t paint the whole story especially when I’m browsing through my instagram feeds. Perhaps it’s my generations of friends that are experiencing the same fate as I am. To be honest, I haven’t been celebrating Hari Raya. I have gave up on my 1st day Hari Raya ritual visits which have been customary for the past 30 plus years (ok, I’m that young :p).
This feeling of “Slow Raya” have been ongoing for the past few years. I have no theories to why this is so but at least the spirit is still there. This year alone, I only paid a visit to 7 houses in the past three days. The first day of Raya I opted to spend some “me” time and I really enjoyed that day itself. I could just drive here and there with ease and I spend some good time at the beach on Raya morning.
I can’t wait to join my family for Hari Raya in Singapore next week. It has been a while since I flew off. Two months to be exact. So it’s one of those periods where I will be outstation once again 😀
For those who wants to share your Hari Raya pictures here, you can email at ranoadidas(a)gmail.com and I can share them here 😀 Once again, Selamat Hari Raya and do drive safe and do eat proportionately.
Kinda of a small family reunion with my siblings at Azirah’s home. Love you guys and too bad I couldn’t catch up with the rest on that day since I left earlier. Great company and great food.
Thanks Kamila for the invitation and love the architecture of your cozy home. Catch up soon 😀
The Ajamain brothers. I’m craving for the nasi lemak *haha* Learnt some new things about what my Smart TV can do now 😀
We are almost colour coordinated. It’s always a ritual to pay the Abas a visit. This began all the way the 2001 and still going strong. Idham was one of my old time buddies where we would waste our precious time playing Pro Evo and Winning Eleven on every free time *lol* Those were the days.
A new place I visited for Raya at the Selamat’s. Apparently their home is just like 3 minutes from mine. Thank you Ewa for the invitation and you have friendly parents.
It was quite rare that I paid a visit during the day at the Jaafars and it happened yesterday. It was a great catch up session but sadly AJ68 wasn’t present as he was on duty.
Now the interesting part about my visit to the Jaafars was this particular Chili sauce. Apparently this is the 10th most spiciest Chili in the world and hence named Da’ Bomb. My friend who could tolerate spicy stuff had trouble dealing with Da’Bomb spiciness and she only took a tiny drop. She had to put ice cubes in her mouth to sooth the spiciness which spread to her tongue, gums, throat and lips. Yes, just from a tiny lil drop. That’s all it takes.
Love the cookies and as always the rendang 😀 Thank Fana for hosting once again and allowing me to charge my Mac Air there too *haha* Thanks also for donating some blood to JPMC.
Do help spread the word, peeps!! A relative of mine is in need of A+ blood.
Some of the people who donated their blood recently and thank you so much for saving lives and your contribution. The family members are truly appreciative of your kindness.
I have been receiving many Raya gifts and one surprising gesture was from Hui Chiet. Thank you so much for the chocolates.
What an awesome latte!! This was how I spent my 1st Raya night – chilling at Soffian’s crib and enjoying the coffee he made for me.
My first movie night at Cove Cinema (Soffian’s crib) and I finally managed to catch Rush. This is such an awesome movie from start to finish. Definitely gave me some adrenalin rush. Superb portrayal and acting. Verdict: 8/10
I spent my Hari Raya morning by the beach and it was such a perfect weather. How I wish every morning would be this cooling.
A great catching up bonding session with my bestie that morning. I’m also impressed that they managed to clean the Meragang beach too.
The best thing about Hari Raya is having good parking spaces especially at popular places such as Times Square area. I caught Dawn of the Planets of the Apes for the second time at Times Cineplex on the First Raya afternoon. There was a pretty decent crowd too.
One great thing about Hari Raya is the emptiness of the atrium at The Mall, Gadong. Nice Mickey Mouse :p
This was taken a day before Hari Raya. Leonard and Jackie were at the site where the tree fell due to strong winds and it disrupted the electricity cables around their neighborhood.
Good thing the Bomba was to the rescue and they managed to clear the tree after the incident.

Total E&P Borneo B.V. (TEPB) management visited one of the local communities at Kg Lumut recently
As part of their Ramadhan activities, Total E&P Borneo B.V. (TEPB) organized their fifth annual Ramadhan Charity, which provided in-kind assistance to the local communities where Total operates, namely Kg Lumut 1 in Mukim Liang (where the Total Onshore Processing Plant is located) and Kg Sabun in Mukim Serasa (where Total Logistic Base is located). Total also planned two more series of donations to DANA Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah National Fund for Orphans and also two orphans of Total’s former staff.
During their Charity visits to the local community, 18 volunteers from Total staff, which included two Heads of Departments split into two teams to handover the respective donations to the community in Kg Lumut 1 and Kg Sabun. The donations were in the form of kitchen staples such as rice, mineral water, sugar, cooking oil and hampers as well as prepaid utilities cards. There were also additional personal contributions by Total staff members. The donations were to help the underprivileged individuals in both villages to better celebrate the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The Total volunteers in Kg Lumut 1 was led by Muhammad Rasimoon Hj Adinin, Head of HR, Corporate Communications and CSR. In addition, the group was also accompanied by several representatives from the Lumut 1 Village Consultative Council (MPK Lumut 1) led by its Secretary, Awg Ismail bin Mohammad. While the team in Kg Sabun was led by Zulhilmi Rambli, Corporate Communications & CSR Executive. Present to assist the Total group of volunteers were several representatives from the Village Consultative Council of Masjid Lama, Pekan Muara, Sabun, and Pelumpong. The MPK was led by its Head of Village, Pengiran Haji Mohamed bin Pengiran Haji Osman @ Othman.
Overall, the donations were handed accordingly to five recipients in Kg Lumut 1, and four from Kg Sabun, which were selected from the list of underprivileged individuals living in the village provided by Community Development Department (JAPEM).

Adi Daini, Eden Chiam, Elizabeth Sim, Bridget Ang, Ruby Chong, Shian Li Esther Chiam and Norhidayat Hj Ahim arriving from Singapore last Friday
A very historic moment for Brunei. Yasmine making headlines on the front page recently, for its North America release this year. DPMM FC recently brought back another trophy from Singapore which was the Singapore League Cup. The other thing was our Brunei Team who competed in Los Angeles for the World Championship of Performing Arts which is also branded as the Olympics for artists.
Team Brunei achieved a higher medal count compared to last year with 38 medals overall. They collected 12 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 13 bronze medals. The biggest winner was Shian Li Esther Chiam who is just 15 years old. She won the Junior Grand World Champion Instrumental Award and also collecting 6 six gold medals along the way. Awesome indeed!!
She was over the moon when she received the prize during the finals and she gave a word of encouragement to all passionate singers and performers that we need to believe in ourselves and work hard towards that goal. She was grateful to be part of the Brunei Team and she also made new friends globally and the great thing about music is that it unites every walks of life, regardless of age and race. She shared that there are so many opportunities for us and they are untapped.
Her younger sister Eden Chiam earned an Industry Award and also earned one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals and she only had weeks to prepare for the event. So that’s not pretty bad for an achievement. I have mentioned previously in my post how team Brunei has made it big at WCOPA finals in Los Angeles, considering they only sent 9 representatives as compared to the aplenty from different countries. Having 5 semi-finalists and 3 finalists are considered “over-achievements” as they are plenty of talents out there worldwide.
Maria Grace Koh and Joanna Kwan are still outstation and didn’t join the entourage upon arrival at the Brunei International Airport. Both are finalists for the WCOPA finals and I’m proud of their achievements.
Elizabeth Sim who dreamt of Hollywood was very happy of her achievements and enjoyed every moment. She won Senior Acting Drama category and also earned 5 medals along the way. Ruby Chong, earned herself two medals and an Industry Award while Bridget Ang earned two medals. Norhidayat Hj Ahim earned 5 medals while Adi Daini earned 3 medals.
They will be having a Brunei WCOPA showcase this coming August at the Jerudong Amphitheater and it will be on the 23rd August 2014. For updates, you can follow them @officialwcopabrunei on instagram for updates.

DPMM FC makes it three
The first eleven of DPMM FC
DPMM FC are on a roll. Even during Ramadhan, they were still able to perform to their best and that shows a lot about the mental strength and the physical aspect of DPMM FC players and being on the road for almost two weeks is not an easy feat for the players. It takes a lot of focus and being present and achieve their goal step-by-step. What more can you ask for and a big shout out to Steve Kean who slowly build up the team from Day 1 (pre-season training) and you can see how much they have improved immensely over the course of the period.
Last night DPMM FC made it history for winning a hat-trick of Singapore League Cup. Tanjong Pagar United FC were considered the underdogs as they were up against two-time champions then DPMM FC and furthermore, DPMM FC also have a psychological advantage as they beat Tanjong Pagar 4-0 back in May at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in the S•League matches.
However, last night was a different matter as it was a winner-takes-it-all match. I knew DPMM FC will have the edge due to their experience factor and their on-going momentum heading into the finals. DPMM FC were on the verge of defeat as their semi-final match was stretched to a penalty shoot-out but Wardun Yussof became the hero with two crucial saves.
In the final match, DPMM FC opened the scoring through a Boris header off a corner in the 35th minute. Tanjong Pagar United FC did have their chances but were wasteful upfront. After the break, Adi Said who deputized for the suspended Rodrigo Tosi made it 2-0 for DPMM FC in the 47th minute. Tanjong Pagar have themselves to blame for not converting their chances and it could be the nerves that got the better of them.
Kudos to the DPMM FC players and also the management and the people involved in guiding the club to greater heights. Let’s not forget the 12th man of DPMM FC and that is the fans of DPMM FC. They do make a difference in bringing up the morale of the players and thank you for believing in them too.
DPMM FC will be touching down later today in the afternoon at 2:15pm and you all are more than welcome to greet them at the Brunei International Airport later and celebrate their success. Images taken by Alson Ong of S•League

We need to diversify…. quickly
Abd Latif bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof, the guest of honour with Dato Dr Isham Jaafar, the Executive and Medical Director of JPMC, Dr. Burc Bassa, Deputy Head and Head Consultant of the Brunei Neuroscience Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) and Vivian Suk Kee Tie, the Head of Rehabilitation Department of JPMC with the management and the stroke and cancer patients of Jerudong Park Medical Centre. Click image to enlarge.
With Hari Raya around the corner, every walk of life can enjoy a festive season whether be it small or big. Sometimes we take things for granted that Hari Raya or in this case, pre-Hari Raya is just an excuse for the spirit of celebration and unity. But little do I know that even the smallest of celebration can bring the warmth and joyful feeling to others and I felt that yesterday during my visit at Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC).
My coverage was on JPMC’s Rehabilitation programme organised by JPMC’s Rehabilitation Department and after the 5-week programme, the patients were awarded with certificates of achievements and judging from the explanations by the occupational therapists, these aren’t easy feats. Stroke patients are bound to lose some of their movements or lose their ability to fee touch, pain or position. Hence the therapists come into the picture and educate and train the patients to regain back some of their body movements as well as coordination.
Apart from the presentation of certification, JPMC organised a short “ceramah” session for the invited guests and JPMC stroke and cancer patients. It was conducted by Ustaz Haji Haslan bin Hj Shabudin from the Isalamic Da’wah Center, Ministry of Religious Affairs and he was kinda of entertaining too and brought some laughter to the audience. He shared about the essence of fasting during Ramadhan and added some general info that we normally take for granted that we know all. It was a pretty interesting session indeed.
The guest of honour of the event was Abd Latif bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof, a member from Board of Directors of Jerudong Park Medical Centre. Also present were Dato Dr Isham Jaafar, the Executive and Medical Director of JPMC, Dr. Burc Bassa, Deputy Head and Head Consultant of the Brunei Neuroscience Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC) and Vivian Suk Kee Tie, the Head of Rehabilitation Department of JPMC.
After the “ceramah”, Vivian shared a brief description on the Therapeutic Group Activity (TGA) and she was pleased to share that the 5-week program was a major success as the patients had improved ability to converse and sing and a progress in regaining their strengths, stamina and physical functions. She also thanked family members of the patients who contributed in the program by providing emotional and social support. I believe this is the most challenging aspect for stroke and cancer patients as they need consistent moral support.
The JPMC patients then performed a Selawat and Nasyid for the invited guests and it was heart warming to see them performing and feeling cheerful with the Raya spirit in them. According to Vivian, having a collective group of stroke patients singing together is challenging in terms of synchronizing with the music because stroke can also affect their speech. However, the task is not impossible and not many hospital in other countries practice this approach and I applaud the rehab team and the patients to show that this is achievable and it takes practice.

The guests also witnessed the patients conduct demonstrations of their activities such as baking Hari Raya treats and building the replica of Kampong Ayer, which is made out of furnished wooden sticks. Kampong Ayer is one of the main tourist attractions in the Sultanate.
Since the year 2012, the Rehabilitation Department has been putting together intensive Therapeutic Group Activity Programs during the month of Ramadhan in preparation for the upcoming Hari Raya festivities and at year’s end in celebration of the holiday season. The Therapeutic Group Activity Program gives patients a goal to achieve in duration of five weeks and help the patients relearn skills that are lost when part of the brain is impaired. The patients together with their family members are taught new ways of performing tasks to compensate for any residual disabilities.
Among other activities conducted last year was the beautiful replica of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien mosque built by the patients, which is currently displayed outside Outpatient Department. It’s really good to see JPMC creating such activities and these provide patients with a sense of belonging while improving their health and body condition.
Rehabilitation Department offers treatments available that includes Falls Prevention, Geriatric and Pediatric Rehabilitation, Back and Neck Pain, Stroke and Spinal Cord Injury, Orthopedics and Sports Injury. For more information, please visit their website at www.jpmc.cm.bn.

What’s happening to our export on Crude Oil?
Well, it’s just my opinion and thoughts based on the information given, so don’t shoot the messenger :p One could be that the demand may not be as high as before and other parties could have chosen other suppliers. The other reason could be that Brunei might not be producing enough crude oil. Then again, I could be wrong as these are just assumptions based on the limited information given by JPKE.
Whatever it is, it’s not a good sign for Brunei if it exports on crude oil maintain the same as now or even lower on the next shipment. It’s about time we need to find other source of revenue and income to our economy.

Handover of donations to Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin to Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Religious Affairs on behalf of MUIB (Islamic Religious Council of Brunei)
The concept of Zakat is to donate a portion of one’s wealth to the eligibility group of people named as asnaf Zakat mentioned in the Holy Book of Al- Quran in Surah At-Taubah: Verse 60. The act is considered highly honorable as Zakat is not only to cleanse one’s wealth but also provides spiritual purification, drawing Muslims closer to Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala.
The significance for Zakat in society is that to eradicate the poverty via an approved methodology in providing and managing the society’s economy and finance. Zakat is the 3rd pillar of Islam, making it is compulsory on Muslims, provided they meet the conditions which are the required nisaab (the minimum amount of wealth i.e 85 gram of gold or their equivalent in cash that one must have before Zakat is payable) and haul (the possession of assets for the whole hijrah year).
In order to help its muslim customers meet this religious obligation, BIBD strongly urges its customers to utilize their branches to pay their Zakat at its many counters at its many strategic locations in Brunei Darussalam. Press release and image courtesy of BIBD.
