Royal Skies at Freshco

From 14 June to 13 July 2014, earn double miles with a minimum spending of BND15 in a single receipt
Royal Skies members can now shop and earn miles at Freshco Supermarket as the loyalty programme under Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has partnered up with the store which began last week.

Until July 13, shoppers will earn double Royal Skies miles with a minimum spending of $15 in a single receipt.

Royal Skies Manager Yasmin Abdullah said the airline is constantly looking at new ways to provide frequent flyers new benefits and ways of redeeming their air miles.

“With the partnership effort between Freshco Supermarket and Royal Skies, we in Freshco, strongly believe that we will achieve our shared goal in giving our customers a more rewarding shopping experience,” said the management of Freshco in a press statement.

“The management of Freshco supermarket value the importance of this tie up with Royal Skies as most of their members are already a regular Freshco shoppers,” the statement added.

In celebrating the new partnership, the store organised an ‘amazing race’ activity last Friday to reward its shoppers.

Six teams of two geared up for the race. Three teams emerged as winners and each won 5000 Royal Skies miles, goodie bags as well as Freshco shopping vouchers.

Apart from that, shoppers also earned 10 Royal Skies miles for every $10 spent at the store yesterday. In addition, the first 50 customers who shopped at Freshco between 7pm to 9pm last night stood a chance to win 5,000 miles and prizes. The supermarket announced it has also extended its operating hours until midnight daily to give more shopping time to their customers. Text courtesy of Joana Tan of The Brunei Times.

Want to be part of YEAB?

The first awareness and ice-breaker will be in Kuala Belait tomorrow. It’s free entry and dinner provided as well. To RSVP, do contact Del 8747521 and the venue will be held at Wan Shan Restaurant

The Young Entrepreneurs Association Brunei (YEAB),will be hosting a dinner and awareness event to attract new members into the association on Thursday 19th June. The event will be held at Wan Shan restaurant at Unit 18 & 19, Lot 7191, in Jalan Jaya Negara, Pandan 4, Kuala Belait.

I recently caught up with Del Goh, the President of YEAB and this is what he has to say about tomorrow’s event as well as YEAB in the long run.

RA: What’s in store for this year and give me a few good reasons why young and hungry entrepreneurs should sign up for YEAB?

Del Goh: Doing business in Brunei a lot of times boil down to who you know. And it’s never a bad thing to know more people. YEAB could potentially open up a new door to many new faces, faces that come with many life experiences that could help guide those new up-and-comers, or spark potential future partnerships.

We already have the rest of the year planned out in terms of activities, be it a festive get-together during Hari Raya or raising funds for a good cause with a big event. You will have to keep checking back with us for details.

RA: You have traveled many places and what do you see collectively in SMEs in other countries? Are they more active?

Del Goh: Brunei is unique. We are a small country with an even smaller population. A lot of things that other countries are doing on a larger scale we may not be able to do. But there are also things that we have and they don’t, and one of them is the “interconnectedness” of our strong ties in this close-knit community. But having said that, look at what YEAB did last year with the ASEAN Summit. So we can play big, but we just have to play smarter at the same time.

RA: The first networking meeting will be held at KB. Any catch?

Del Goh: No. We thought we would reach out to the KB community too because a lot of things and events always happen in Bandar area. And the Belait community are inevitably left out most of the time. We as an association want to include everyone. No doubt we won’t be able to do this in every area but Belait is the second largest district so why not do it there too?

RA: Do you think they are growing numbers of young entrepreneurs compared to a few year’s ago?

Del Goh: Definitely. A whole lot more. Look at how many more outlets and shops and franchise businesses have come in. Cafes are booming, eateries have never been more competitive, and most of them are managed by youths. It’s a great time to do business here.

RA: Who are the mentors that you have identified for YEAB?

Del Goh: We are all volunteers here. Nobody is getting a salary. We all do what we can, as long as there is the willingness. All of us can be mentors to those who need it. And depending on what a particular person needs, we will be able to point them in the right direction with our collective experience and contacts.

RA: Lastly, why should students be part of this? I see that you have allowed students to join with a $25 yearly membership.

Del Goh: Students, youths, they are the future. It’s important to have one’s base strong. That would lead to an smoother progression later on. So by joining YEAB, with the amount of exposure that we get, the amount of invitations to talks and seminars that we receive from different companies and ministries, it’s a great way to gain some insights and education on the entrepreneurial front. And by being in an association like this, they get to broaden their network and can ask the right questions to the right people.

The End

So there you go, peeps!! Just a quick run down of what to expect from YEAB and for new potential members, there will be an annual subscription fee of BND 200. You will know know what opportunities will open for you in the near future.

Brunei vs Mongolia

Come and support Brunei tonight
Report by Syarif Rasani of The Brunei Times: National rugby captain Muhammad Redha Hj Adinin hopes they can come out on top at today’s Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) Asian 5 Nations Division IV tournament.

The national team will be facing a tough test against Mongolia – who have a significant advantage in size – before meeting Cambodia on Saturday. The competition’s other game will see Cambodia face Mongolia on Thursday.

“Our expectations are to definitely win the tournament,” Redha told The Brunei Times yesterday.

“We’re ready to put everything on the line to defend our home ground until the last whistle blows.

“We have the advantage of familiarising ourselves with the pitch (at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas), weather and climate changes.”

The national team will be heading into battle boosted by two successful warm up matches where they defeated the Miri Rhinos 44-21 and Labuan 28-13.

Redha noted that winning their tune up games will definitely help their confidence.

“However, the main intentions of those two matches were to see how well we played as a team as a solid pack executing all the game plan set for us and if the game plan was best suited to each and every individual’s capabilities,” said Redha.

“Perfectly executing our game plan and in dentifying the areas that we needed to work on were considered a victory to us, while winning the two clashes was a bonus,” he added.

Vice-captain Ahmad Faez Anuar admitted that the national squad do not know much about today’s opponents as they have never played against other before.

“We know that the Mongolia Rugby Football Union (MRFU) have been around for a bit and we do know for sure that they would want to win this tournament to make a statement, as much as the Leopards (Brunei national team) do,” said Faez.

“It’s going to be a tough game and I’m sure both teams will be hungry for points.

“Ideally, we would have loved to get more time and perhaps more test matches, but the camp we had has propelled and sculptured us a lot – but the real answer will be portrayed on the field this week.

“The team has bonded tremendously. Skipper Redha and I are happy with how the team is getting along.

“The brotherhood spirit is strong in this team as every player knows each other’s traits in and out of the pitch, so we know we’ve got each other’s back come game time,” added Faez.

Brunei will have four days rest before they take on Cambodia on Saturday. Cambodia beat Brunei 38-0 and 28-0 during the Division V tournament in Cambodia last year.

FIFA 14 tournament

The FIFA 14 tournament is back!!

Craving for another football gaming tournament? For those familiar with FIFA 14, we will be holding a mini FIFA 14 PS3 tournament at Hua Ho Manggis Mall. It’s been a while since I organised one and this was back during my Brunei Cyber Games days. Since Hua Ho Manggis is organising a football fiesta event, I thought it would be nice to give a helping hand to an event that I enjoyed organizing.

There will be two categories to choose from:

1) World Cup (Round Robin) $10 Entry Fee

2) Knock Out (Elimination) $8 Entry Fee

You can register at Hua Ho Manggis at the ground floor during opening hours and you can choose your session (either morning, afternoon or evening slots) for World Cup or Knock Out category.

Each registrant will receive a Panini Sticker Album, a few sticker packets and some goodies as well. There will be prize, trophies and medals for the top three participants and thank you to the sponsors of this event – Red Bull, Standard Chartered Bank, Hua Ho Manggis, Panini, Armtrix Enterprise, Malpyy.com and Johnson & Johnson.  And also a big thank you to Kristal FM for announcing this event.

I shall be posting the rules and regulations soon but I strongly suggest that you bring your own PS3 controllers. The console platform for this tournament is a PS3 by the way. Sorry, it won’t on a PS4 platform just yet. Good luck to all the participants and let’s bring up the spirit of football once again in conjunction with the World Cup 2014.

Late post: Hua Hin Trip

Late post: My recent trip to Hua Hin. There were some pending stories for me especially on my trip to Hua Hin sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines with the support of Tourism Authority of Thailand. My followers on my instagram would know of my updates on my travel logs but I have yet to share my complete experience here on my blog. Another reason for the delay is the recent situation at Thailand where curfews were imposed. So now, not to worry and this is a major boost to increase the numbers of tourism in Thailand especially in Bangkok. The media, bloggers and travel agents were treated to a 5 day trip to Bangkok and Hua Hin so we can share with you all the places of interest in both places.

Hua Hin itself is a 3 hour bus ride and yea, I bet most of you are familiar with Phuket and Pattaya but Hua Hin is one of the most under-rated places in Thailand. I remember heading there back in 2010 and this time, things have changed rapidly and slowly it’s beginning to pick up the pace in bringing more attraction to the foreigners. I myself was impressed with the recent developments and after visiting many places of interest in Hua Hin, I’m beginning to appreciate the city more.

One of the places that we visited at Hua Hin is the Premium Outlet Cha-Am which was quite a fair ride but it’s worth it for sure. You will be able to look for tons of brand items in a discounted price and I did some shopping of my own too. You can find brands such as Adidas, Levis, Samsonite and Diesel to name a few.

Good news for travelers and if you ask me frankly, the situation was calmer than what was reported in the papers. But this is a huge boost that the curfew has been lifted just last weekend

Our Bangkok-Hua Hin trip last may sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines

One of my favourite shopping place at Hua Hin is the factory outlet at Cha-am. It’s fair ride from Hua Hin city (about 30 mins or so) and there are tons of big brands too

Of course, this was my first pitstop at the factory outlet 😀

Since I’m blogging about my experience of the FAM Trip, I would like to acknowledge my huge thanks to Pinky who handled us pretty well. She’s such a committed and dedicated ground handler.

Swiss Sheep Farm. I really don’t know why these places are getting popular. When we reach there, there were quite a number of tourists there. It is located on Phetkasem Rd. opposite Santorini Park on the way to Hua Hin – Cha-am. The scenic views are pretty good and yes, you get to experience some sheep feeding too. Anyway, there weren’t just sheep there but you will get to see horses and ponies too. This is also an ideal place to take photos. I saw a billboard saying that there will be having sheep racing soon and I don’t know how that works *lol*

Group photo with the Brunei representatives at Swiss Sheep Farm

It’s feeding time…

The weirdest thing at the Swiss Sheep Farm is that you will find things not related to ….. sheep *lol* Here you see Azim and KC hogging on to a Hulk sculpture

Another odd thing to see this classic car at the area

I’m not sure what character is this

You can go on a horsey ride

Santorini Park Cha-am. This is a humungous park and very ideal if you come as a family or big groups. If you heard of the word Santorini, well, it’s a city in Greece and the theme park is structured in a way that it will give a Greek impression too. You will notice from the classic whitewashed buildings, colourfully painted windows, down to stone-paved paths and domed towers which will give you a feel of being in Greece. What more can you ask for? Impressive lineup of shops, restaurants and an amusement park and it feels it’s like one stop centre. The Santorini Park Cha-Am is open everyday too. Just check out the pictures below.

There’s a trick eye museum as well

This slide is awesome.. You slide on a tube and land on a bouncer.

Now this is interesting but we didn’t give this a try since we didn’t have enough time

The Thai Boxing machine was pretty cool. I had a run with @marul69 which lasted for 3 minutes and it’s cheap too.

There’s also a haunted house

Good thing about the Santorini Park is that they have small shops, a few of them including an Adidas store 😀

It had desserts at one of the cafes at Santorini Park

The restroom at Santorini Park is pretty unique

The Venezia Hua Hin. This was one of our pitstops and we were given a short period of time to wander around. It’s also one of the newest theme shopping and attraction village in Hua Hin. This is like a shopping village and compared to the rest, this is a great place to take photos with (add plenty of romantic photo opportunities) plus a couple of attractions and entertainment venues. A great place to eat and shop and take awesome pictures.

With 73,600 sq.m. and 316 shops, the park is immense and even includes a 200 meter ‘Grand Canal’ on which you can actually get a ride on iconic Venetian gondolas. Colorful mediterranean houses, shops and terraces are lined up on each side of the canal which ends in front of an Italian looking garden and two large church-like buildings: one is a Villa-Market (imported products supermarket) an the other a mini zoo. So if you happen to be at Hua Hin, do drop by these places.

How Venezia in Hua Hin looks like

There is also a mini train that bring you around. It’s not as happening as Santorini since there isn’t any theme rides

At Venezia in Hua Hin

A shopping area at Venezia but somehow lacking the traffic despite having good brands

Yay!! Another Adidas store at Venezia in Hua Hin

Dugout Treble World Cup podcast

Check out the debut podcast of Dugout Treble which is dedicated to World Cup highlights, news and opinions starring Rano Iskandar and co-host Jason Rumpun.

World Cup updates

Not a convincing performance from Argentina as a whole but sometimes when you have a world class player like Lionel Messi, that’s all you need. He finally scored his World Cup goal and it has been 8 years since he broke the duck in the World Cup. A great goal too but loads of homework for Argentina if they want to get pass the group stage. Argentina beat Bosnia 2-1.

Karim Benzema has done it. He scored twice, one from the a penalty as they beat Honduras 3-0 in their group match. It seems France won’t be missing Frank Ribery as much who couldn’t make it to the big stage due to injury. I’m also glad that he is my captain on my fantasy league (McDonald’s FIFA) and he has 28 points for his effort last night.

A very entertaining match between Switzerland and Ecuador but it was the Swiss who stole the final laugh when substitute Haris Seferovic scored in the dying minutes of extra time for an important 2-1 victory over Ecuador. The match could have gone either way. Very entertaining indeed.

A match that needed spark when Ivory Coast was searching for an equalizer after Honda had scored an early goal. In comes Drogba but though he didn’t score or assist, his presence changed the flow of play and gave the team more confidence and in the end, Ivory Coast came out victorious with a 2-1 score line against Japan. Amazing what one man can do!!

Joe Hart fell into the net after Balotelli scored a header from close range. It proved to be the winner but my favourite team England showed lots of promise especially with a very young team which lacked experience. Apart from captain Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney, the first 11 were pretty much a very young team. Pirlo, Italy’s maestro proved his class once again despite being 35 and Italy prevailed in another exciting clash. Italy won 2-1.

A Costa Rican fan enjoying his moment as Costa Rica caused a major upset against Uruguay with a 3-1 victory. It will be interesting if Suarez will be back in time for the match against England.

Geylang robbed a point

The highlights between DPMM FC and Geylang International FC

What a great run by Geylang International FC! They have beat Tampines Rovers and drew against Harimau Muda before gaining a much needed point against DPMM FC at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Their run have improved gradually and it wasn’t an easy feat to get points of DPMM FC’s home turf and Geylang International FC managed to do it.

DPMM FC were heading into this match with a 3 losing streak in the S•League and the head coach Steve Kean wanted to turn things around. However, DPMM FC had to settle for a goalless draw instead. It could have been all three points for the home side if it wasn’t for the three goal bound efforts that hit the post in the second half.

Geylang International FC keeper Siddiq Durimi was in top form to deny Roy O’Donovan and Roberto Alviz late in the first half. However, the visitors was a much better side in the first half as they dominated possession and proved more hungrier of the two sides. The home side lacked conviction and the partnership of Hendra and captain Bobby in midfield couldn’t control the midfield with ease especially when playing at their home turf.

It was definitely a forgettable first half for DPMM FC and the head coach changed the tactics after the second half, putting Alviz back in a much more central role. Tosi Rodrigo, Roy O’Donovan and Roberto Alviz came very close in breaking the deadlock after the break. It was a much better performance from DPMM FC but the result wasn’t favourable enough as this match was a much needed win for DPMM FC.

For me, the star of the night was Geylang Internatioanal FC’s Aliff Shafaein who was instrumental in his side’s attack. He had a few efforts on target and his penetrating runs made it difficult for DPMM FC to defend as he opened up gaps in their defence. He lifted Geylang’s confidence and bossed the midfield but he ran out of steam in the middle of the second half as he was substituted.

Though it wasn’t a defeat for DPMM FC, Steve Kean believes this is a change of momentum after a run of 3 defeats and this shift will be more favourable in the upcoming matches for DPMM FC. Their next game will be against Courts Young Lions this Wednesday at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Despite the draw, DPMM FC still lead the table with a one-point lead over Warriors FC and defending champions Tampines Rovers. They can extend their lead to four points if they beat Courts Young Lions this Wednesday. All the best, DPMM FC.

Brazil pass the 1st test

Now.. something just doesn’t add up here. I was disappointed with their performance yesterday and furthermore, the audio was pretty bad. I still prefer Shakira’s song or even Ricky Martin’s. The opening ceremony didn’t raise any goosebumps for me. A bit of a letdown.

I kinda like these costumes at least during the opening ceremony

Finally after four years, the World Cup is back!! But am I hyped up as before? Hmmmm hard to say but apparently not that fired up. I didn’t even know that the opening ceremony was last night until 8 hours before the opening ceremony, thinking it will fall today. Anyway, what are my thoughts of the opening ceremony? Not really much to shout about but the costumes were interesting enough and it was good to see children and kids participating. Other than that, it’s kinda disappointing really.

Few of my friends from Brunei were there for the opening ceremony and the first match of the World Cup 2014 between host Brazil and Croatia. Awesome!!! One of my bucket lists was to actually travel across the world to catch a World Cup match one day. That day will come but not Brazil. So a probable chance in Russia in 2018 or Qatar 2022 that I would travel there. My friends will be flying off to another destination to catch Uruguay vs Costa Rica and if I’m not mistaken, they will be catching a total of 5 to 6 matches in Brazil. Oh man, I’m so jealous 🙁

We  just recently started a podcast on World Cup news called the Dugout Treble and there will be more episodes coming soon. I have also create a McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy League. You can join my league by clicking here. Good luck!!!

Annual blood donation

Green bankers rolled up their sleeves yesterday to contribute to an important cause: blood donation. The event, hosted every year, was held at the Learning & Development Centre at Baiduri Bank Head Office.

This year’s blood donation drive was organized with the theme “Everyone has a Type” aimed to help replenish the low blood supplies faced by the National Blood Bank at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

Senior Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Human Resources and Finance Division and member of the Baiduri Bank Management Committee, Ms Veronica Chong, said that blood donating is a good practice, and she has been doing it every year during the drive.

“There is an overall feeling of goodness and satisfaction when donating blood,” she said. “A lot of people are fearful of donating blood because of the needle but it’s not painful, and donating only one pint of blood can save up to three lives.”

“One advice I have for them is to stay relaxed. If you are scared of needles, look away, or better yet, talk with your colleagues, I’m sure they’ll also appreciate the distraction.”

The event was organised as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. It is an annual event held to aid patients in need of specific types of blood urgently.

The Baiduri Bank Group is also an active supporter and major sponsor of the annual World Blood Donor Day.

Baiduri Bank Group has also just wrapped up their yearly charity golf event, The Baiduri Masters – an initiative that regularly provides financial support for child development programmes in Brunei such as Pusat Ehsan, Child Development Centre (CDC), SMARTER and the Learning Ladders Society. DPMM FC vs Geylang

Catch this match on Saturday, 14th June

Three in a row in the S•League. That wasn’t the script as planned for DPMM FC. One stage DPMM FC was 7 points ahead in the summit. Today their cushion has been cut to just one point after 3 consecutive losses in the S•League but Home United can overtake the leaderboard should they win tonight against Hougang United.

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean is confident that DPMM FC can bounce back against Geylang International FC tomorrow night (Saturday) at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium.

“It might 3 league losses in a row but we have a big win in between. So it’s two defeats in a row but it’s never nice. I still feel we have enough qualities. We played too deep against Tampines Rovers and it gives us something to work on and we just had some training session to get things right. I think the worrying thing is you don’t know why you lost and you don’t know why you didn’t play. This one we know we were far too deep,” shared Steve Kean.

“We will definitely pick up from our previous game and we actually have against Tampines. We know these were gonna be tough games. If we get a good game against Geylang, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be back to where we started.”

Geyland International currently sits at 8th place in the S•League and the last time DPMM FC played them at Bedok Stadium, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. So let’s hope for a victory for DPMM FC tomorrow night.

Maju Motors on the rise

Chan Key Hong, Executive Director of Maju Motors and Steffen Schwarz, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Singapore, with the management of Maju Motors and Volkswagen Group Singapore

Volkswagen Brunei has taken its flagship by storm in the past few months. Why? Just in May alone, Maju Motors, the local distributor of Volkswagen in Brunei, hit the 100 units mark which is the highest ever target for Maju Motors. Their VW Polo 1.4 was the biggest seller among the models and Maju Motors is excited as they will be unveiling new models in the near future. They have already unveiled the family orientated vehicle called Sharan and I was quite impressed with the features (More on that later on my next post). For now, I wanna highlight the growth of Maju Motors in terms of delivery and after sales service.

In the past 12 months, I could see a gradual progress at Maju Motors as they invested in upgrading and renovating their showroom and the result was pretty rewarding especially to their clients and potentially new ones. Their advert campaigns have catchy and effective to draw and entice new customers and breaking that barrier that Volkswagen do cater to all kind of personalities of their clients. There are some models that are made affordable also to the Brunei market without compromising the quality that Volkswagen delivers. So you will tend to see different walks of life behind the (Volkswagen) wheel.

The local media and bloggers have also made an impact on Maju Motors’ development in the past few months. I have to honestly say that compared to where Maju Motors was a few years ago and now, it has a tremendous change and thanks to the leadership and courage that Chan Key Hong, Executive Director of Maju Motors, who drove the company to newer heights and he himself was truly amazed by the company’s sudden growth especially in Brunei’s competitive automative market.

Steffen Schwarz, Managing Director of Volkswagen Group Singapore, was appreciative of Key Hong’s handwork and commitment in bringing Volkswagen to another level in Brunei Darussalam but he didn’t expect the sales to reach a 100% growth in just a matter of months. He shared with The Brunei Times that it is also important to look at the service side and brand after from the sales as these are key components in sustaining the growth. He said even though Brunei has a smaller market but it is nonetheless an important market in Southeast Asia. He praised the commitment and the effort done by Key Hong and his team.

So peeps, if you are interested to see the Sharan and other Volkswagen models, do head down to The Mall, Gadong, and check out the Volkswagen roadshow brought to you by Maju Motors and also receive a free The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf voucher when you test drive. The last day of roadshow is Sunday, 15th June 2014.

Once again, congratulations to Chan Key Hong and his team for the outstanding milestone last month and it was also a pleasure to have finally met Dionne from Singapore whom I have been liaising with through emails.

Check out my post tomorrow on the impressive Volkswagen Sharan.

Yippy Tune recital

The students of Yippy Tune with their certificates

Yippy Tune celebrated it’s 3rd annual recital on Sunday attracting full capacity crowds for all 6 of it’s sessions on a single day; starting from 11am all the way to 6.30pm.

The audiences were treated with an afternoon of pure musical indulgence of different genres from classical to pop and jazz from performers as young as three and a half years old.

There was a clear distinction between this year’s performance and the year before, both in terms of student participations as well as the range of musical instruments being played at the recital – which includes, the Violin, Piano, Guitars and vocal performances.

“One of the overriding themes chosen by the students to perform this year had been the songs from Frozen’s soundtracks. Clearly, Brunei is not immune from the ‘Frozen’ fever.” According to Ms Deon Ong- the School Director.

Also present to perform at the event were the students from St Andrew’s School, performing group music with their violins in the afternoon. The St Andrew’s Students were coached by Yippy Tune teachers during the term with the onsite music learning program.

The music school has seen a steady growth in business in the last 12 months, as there had been an increase in the realization of the importance of music appreciation and skills amongst the parents. “Music has along been associated with children’s cognitive and social development; I think the parents in Brunei are increasingly realizing this very crucial point.” Which, as a result, “the number of staff has multiplied three-fold.” According to the School Director.
