Ramadhan falls on Tuesday
An official looks through a telescope as Acting Minister of Development Dato Hj Suhaimi (L) looks on during the moon sighting to determine the first day of Ramadhan at the DST headquarters yesterday. As predicted, Ramadhan will fall tomorrow Tuesday 7th June 2016. The moon sighting was held at DST headquarters, another at Bukit Agok in Jerudong, Bukit Ambok in Tutong and Bukit Lumut in Belait. Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office touring the cooking demo using bruneihalal products and he said how simple it was to make a healthy meal
It’s always great to know a local brand being recognized internationally. One of them brand is bruneihalal. After being in existence for many years (9 years), there is a sudden change in progress as Ghanim International Corporation (that handles bruneihalal) has been introducing many new products to bring more traction for the brand.
Last weekend, the invited guests were feted to delicious meals using bruneihalal products such as a the bruneihalal chicken (imported from the UK) and provia and cremvia (both natural sweeteners) to name a few.
The event was organised by bruneihalal and the guest of honour was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar, the Minister of Energy and Industry at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Before the food sampling, the guest of honour delivered his welcoming remarks and praised the global direction that Ghanim International Corporation is heading. For your info, the said company also has an office in the UK and the chicken products in the UK are from a Brunei certified abattoir in the UK and the items are certified by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Brunei Darussalam. Interesting.
Also present were the Dato Paduka Dr Hj Mohd Amin Liew Abdullah, chairman of Ghanim International Corporation and Dr Nur Rahman, CEO of Ghanim International Corporation who both are instrumental in the recent surge of growth of the bruneihalal brand.
Last weekend also saw 25 new bruneihalal products being unveiled by Ghanim and these products were made through collaboration with the local SMES in Brunei which includes Sabli Food Industries Sdn Bhd, Sahamada Corporation Sdn Bhd, Hana Soy & World Sdn Bhd and Superwater Marketing Sdn Bhd.

The Energy Kitchen used the sweetener for their tarts. Oh it’s a natural sweetener and it’s also ideal for those with diabetes.
The Minister was full of praises of Ghanim’s direction and the key component he shared was being “innovative” for bruneihalal brand to be sustainable and bigger. The halal food industry is a multi-billion industry and hence, Ghanim can ride on these opportunities along the value chain of the halal food industry. He also hopes that the bruneihalal brand can help spur the local and international economy through means of distribution and production.
As for the food sampling session of the bruneihalal new products, YB Pehin Dato Hj Mohd Yasmin was impressed and he urged the locals to support the bruneihalal products for their daily cooking needs. I actually had the bruneihalal chicken and I’m amazed of the quality (tenderness and taste) even though the chicken came in a packed form. So far, the bruneihalal chicken and other products are being sold at Tesco and Asda stores in the UK. So I’m hoping for the bruneihalal chicken to make its way to the Brunei market soon.
Do watch out for this space on bruneihalal products. They are certainly riding the wave and now, the awareness campaign begins in reaching the eyes of the locals to appreciate our own local brand, bruneihalal.

The tutu kurungs now available at Bajoo
Heard of Tutu Kurungs? It’s something new to me and I recently attended a launch at Sugar Sugar by Bajoo (located at Mata-Mata Complex). I believe this will be a big hit among the girls and it’s something new and fashionable too.
It’s a combination of pettitskirt and a baju knurl. This is their second collection inspired by My Little Pony characters and hence it’s called tutu kurungs.
There are ready-to-wear tutu kurungs and starts from 1 years old to 9 years old. Bajoo also caters for custom made ones too.
The said brand have been doing quite well in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore under the label of sugar sugar.
So what are your waiting for parents? Want your daughters to look impressive in the tutu kurungs? They only costs BND 98 per piece and this will be ideal for Hari Raya festive season.
Thank you, both of you, for the invite and congratulations 😀

I knew Dallas Lim during his years in Yellow Pages (Brunei) as a sales person. He then ventured into his own business by opening up a property portal for the convenience of real estate and the home seekers. Then five years later (which is the present), Dallas finally launched his new baby – Bruneibusiness.com – which acts as a business portal online directory. Well, haven’t we all seen this before? However, Dallas’ website has a different approach.
Do you know when there are times when you struggle to know of a location? or what is available at that particular location? This is ideal especially for those staying at different districts. For instance, if I happen to drive down to KB, I won’t be familiar with a lot of commercial buildings. This is where the portal comes in handy for me. It will give me an indication of commercial buildings around KB and what is available at that particular building. It’s sort of a reverse process and it somehow works.
I’ve checked out the website and it’s quite comprehensive and update to date in terms of the commercial buildings in Brunei Darussalam. In other words, this portal focuses nationwide.
Will this portal be successful? Well, it is accessible on your portable phones or smart phones, then it surely will. The public are now gaining information online than on print media. This is definitely a substitute for print directories as online access is the way to go in this era.
Well done, Dallas, on your extended family business venture. I’m pretty sure that it will be a hit and hopefully be the local “google” version for commercial places in Brunei Darussalam.
Kuvings Whole Slow Juicer. Juicing has never been easier and natural.
I’ve always wonder how does the Kuvings work. I’ve seen it around in events, being used to serve to guests. I’m amazed that what this machine can actually do. Let me quickly give you a background about Kuvings. It’s actually a slow-juicer brand made from Korea. One mentality that I would like to share that this machine is not a blender because it doesn’t use any sharp blades. Instead of blending, it mash the fruits and vegetable together to give a smooth, soothing mixture.
The difference between a blender and a Kuvings slow-juicer is the final product. Sometimes when you order apple juice, after a few minutes, you will see two layers within the apple juice. The top part of the apple juice will be denser than the lower part and you will only able to taste the richness on the first few sips. Now, if you use a slow juicer, the texture of the apple juice will be consistent throughout. You will not get difference in layers even if you leave it for quite some time. Interesting, right?
This product has been endorsed by Sara Ding, an enthusiast health advocate, who have been using the slow juicer for her healthy consumption. She even has her own recipe book where she shared a hundred combination of juice you can make using Kuvings. The biggest reason for her for using Kuvings is because of convenience and the quality it produces. Imagine this. You don’t have time to cut or peel off the skin of an apple for instance or do the chop-chop on your vegetables. Let Kuvings do the job for you and all you have to do is wait. Easy peasy.
There are so many things that I can talk about the Kuvings but if you want an honest and thorough opinion, check out Sarah Ding’s review on it. You will be more convinced. Furthermore, the Kuvings create a healthy juice since the ingredients are raw vegetables and fruits. Hence you get the most of the nutrients from the combination of fruits and vegetable.
Now you can actually get hold of Kuvings in Brunei. Seng Hoe Huat is the sole distributor and they have been introducing to the local market since March 2015. They have managed to sell around 200 units of the Kuvings slow juicer and that will give you an indication that this machine gives you the best quality drink/juice.
Though the Kuvings slow juicer has a one warranty for its juicer, the main component which is the juicing screw (or Auger) and the motor have a 10 year warranty. That’s pretty cool too.
Popular restaurants such as Momo Restaurant and The Energy Kitchen have been serving the juices using Kuvings slow juicer. You may find the Kuvings quite pricey but this is a premium product that delivers. You won’t have to worry about any juice blenders or replacing one for a very, very, very long time. I kid you not.
For a special offer from the distributor, you can take advantage of their Hari Raya $50 discount and if you also purchase the Kuvings slow juicer, you will also be entitled to choose 1 serving tray and tea cup from Katie Alice, 2 mason jars, 1 Sara Ding recipe book and the juicer comes with a smoothie maker and a sorbet strainer.
You can follow them on their IG @kuvings_brunei or you can contact them at 8637575 or 8807353 if you are interested in one.

Faiq Jefri Bolkiah scored from the penalty spot in the 68th minute to equalize but Timor Leste scored the winning goal five minutes later. Brunei 1 Timor Leste 2.
There have been mixed reactions from fans of the Brunei u-23 football team after their third loss of the campaign in the SEA Games 2015. Tonight they lost to Timor Leste 2-1 despite Faiq Jefri Bolkiah’s debut goal for Brunei. It was a similar story for Brunei who struggled to make an impact for the third time. Perhaps it’s the mental and physical preparation that Brunei ain’t ready just yet. The result meant that Brunei won’t be qualified for the next round and now will play the remaining games for pride and glory.
So what’s your take on Brunei’s performance so far in the SEA Games for football? On a positive note, they are still young lads and they don’t have the luxury to play in a much more competitive league to gain more experience and exposure. I do hope Brunei do their absolute best in the remaining fixtures and it will be starting point leading up to the SEA Games 2019 where Brunei will be hosting.

Their Pappa Char Kuey Teow is one of their best sellers among the patrons of Papparich located in Gadong. I recently “tapau-ed” a few dishes for a dinner function and let’s not forget one of my favourites now – the Pappa Deep Fried Crispy Chicken Skin.. Yummeehh….
Good thing now is Papparich is having their 1st anniversary promotion where you can enjoy 10% everything until 31st January. So you have a few more days to go. I will probably pop down this week to satisfy my craving for the Pappa Deep Fried Crispy Chicken Skin and their curry laksa..
Papparich is located at Block G of Abdul Razak Complex and you won’t miss it because their signage is the biggest one in Gadong if I’m not mistaken. You can check out more of their menus here but not all the new dishes are included just yet.

It’s the 15th time that D’Sunlit has organised such event and it has become a Brunei household name ever since its inception since 2008. This time it will take place on January 31st (tomorrow) till Sunday, 1st February at the International Convention Centre from 10am to 10pm.

Chris Woo accepting the 1st place in the semi-finals of the Toastmasters International Speech contest at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Chris will compete in the finals against 8 finalists tomorrow (Saturday).
In less than a year, he took our club to another level with his International Speech Contest. Victories after victories, he made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest where he was pitted against 90 contestants, vying for the championship. This year, the event is held for the first time ever outside North America and it is currently being held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
The stakes were pretty high. As I mentioned before, I had listen to his speech before and he still have to deliver the same speech as that was part of the rules and regulations for every semi-finalists. Chris Woo had to win on the national level, then he went to KK to win on the same speech before heading to Surabaya to win the title of District 87 International Speech Champion which was the ticket for the entry of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest semi-finals stage.
Of course, the stakes were high. He was drawn into Speech 9 where he was pitted against 9 other awesome speakers. Chris was lucky no.7 and wow, I just amazed how he can still draw a stronger vibe than before despite being the same speech about his mother. I was slightly concerned because two or three of other speakers were just as entertaining and captivating. Of course, they must be. They are champions in their respective districts. Ok, for those who don’t understand the word district, well.. it’s just an area where the countries are being listed in that particular district. So in our case, Brunei shared the same district as East Malaysia and Indonesia.
Anyway, what an awesome delivery, Chris!! I knew you nailed it. My neighbours sitting next to me were talking about the speaker from Brunei and our prediction was right. Chris stole the show. The crowd loved it. Our Brunei supporters were equally vibrant and over-excited when Chris Woo’s name was mentioned as the winner of the semi-final contest for Speech 9. The victory meant that Chris will be competing in the finals against 8 other finalists this Saturday (tomorrow).
Honestly, I just so proud that our own member from Brunei Speakers’ Club has made to the finals and founder of Brunei Speakers’ Club, Clovis Lai was the over the moon with the result as he was hugging every one from Brunei and toastmasters from District 87. But wow, Clovis has so much energy that it made him look younger :p I am so glad that I made it on this trip and witnessed a world class performance from toastmaster Chris Woo. The other part that I’m glad was being back as a member of toastmasters in Brunei Speakers’ Club and it boils down to the vibrancy and the new energy that the executive committee and members have brought in into the club. I thanked Seng Yee for the push as well as the other members and of course, my dearest friends who came and supported my first speech ever two weeks ago.
The journey has begun and I’m proud to be on that path in inspiring myself and others.

BruneiHalal held a Hari Raya open house event at its Jerudong office recently where it shared the joys and celebration of the festive month with its invited guests.
The event, which was the third of its kind organised by the company since its establishment in 2009, saw management and its associates in a laid back atmosphere outside the working environment.
“We have invited our stakeholders, officials from the government sector, Royal Brunei Catering, smaller vendors who have partnered to sell our products and even our neighbours Brunei Gas Carriers,” said Brand Marketing Executive Melline Jaini.
The BruneiHalal brand currently has more than 30 products under its belt, which includes a frozen range and Indian cuisine products.
BruneiHalal was established by the government to run commercial simply to provide halal food and drinks to the world.
“Lately we are reminding ourselves of our focus in Brunei to the local market as well. That’s why our product range has expanded we have over 30 products and in the UK, it is getting traction as well and that one is focusing on the meats,” said Melline.

Today will be an interesting session as Volkswagen Singapore will allow us to experience some of the Volkswagen models on Singapore road. I would say this will be one “sakai” moment for me since I never really driven in the city of Singapore. Being it my second home, I frequent its public transport more and yes, if I were to drive, I would definitely lose my sense of direction.
I shall be updating more on the our driving experience with Volkswagen models (cars I meant). Have a great Tuesday, peeps!! Do follow me on instagram @ranoadidas for updates and also @volkswagenbrunei and their official hashtag #volkswagenbrunei #vwbrunei for our live updates in Singapore 😀

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Feby Latip handing over a mock cheque to Pg Datin Hjh Noraini, Executive Operational Trustee of Pusat Ehsan
Hari Raya cheer came early for Pusat Ehsan recently when Brunei Halal made a generous donation to the centre as a gesture of goodwill and care towards the special children in this blessed month of Ramadhan. A total of $2,000 in donations was presented by Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Feby Latip to Pg Datin Hjh Noraini, Executive Operational Trustee of Pusat Ehsan who was on hand to receive the contribution.
Students queued up to receive donations in form of ‘green packets’ and products from Brunei Halal representatives. According to Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Feby Latip, it was fitting that BruneiHalal reached out to Pusat Ehsan as the centre has been around for quite some time and the intent is to inculcate community wellbeing amongst the staff of the company.
She went on to say that the centre for special needs is a great organisation that is very committed to providing quality care to its individuals and the company is very keen to assist particularly during Ramadhan. She also added that the company has a Sport and Social committee as well as a corporate social responsibility section which aim to foster greater relationship as well as care within and outside the company.
The ceremony was witnessed by representatives from the trading and marketing arm of the halal products company, Ghanim International Food Corporation along with staff and representatives of Brunei Halal and Pusat Ehsan. Brunei Halal was created out of the aim to address the growing requisite for halal, quality, safety and sustainability in all aspects of consumption and the company assures that all products are halal and wholesome in its properties. Have you ever heard of Honey Carsmart? You will be surprised that this company has been around for 30 years. Amazing!! And they are known for selling used cars or second hand cars. Apparently in Brunei, there are not many licensed used car dealers and it’s good to know that Honey Carsmart is one of the licensed ones in Brunei.
This weekend (Saturday and Sunday) on 19th and 20th July, they will be having a Hari Raya Grand Sale at their car yard at Bunut. So hence I’m sharing this information with you. Honey Carsmart have experience being a dealership with several Japanese brands before evolving into a full time dealership of local used cars.
The company also boasts one branch office, two car yards and two general workshops for their cars. When you buy from them, you will also be offered motor insurance for your convenience and also with an affordable price.
During the Hari Raya Grand Sale, they will be displaying more than 300 used cars and even motorcycles. Perhaps the top of the crop deals are such as the Nissan 350Z convertible and the Mercedes Benz SL600. By the way, there won’t be any bookings for any of the cars during the Hari Raya Grand Sale promotion. It will be first come, first serve basis so this will be a fair practice for all.
Good news to all visitors that you will be entitled to a lucky draw dip and you can win gifts useful for Hari Raya. But first, you will need to register yourself as a visitor. Two financing institutions will be on duty on the weekend should they want to purchase the car on the spot.
So drop by on these special occasion from 9am to 4pm and I highly recommend to my readers not to miss this opportunity. This is it. After a fresh win from Courts Young Lions with a 6-1 score line, DPMM FC is in high mood and they won’t be taking Harimau Muda very lightly indeed despite the visitors being on the basement of the S•League.
DPMM FC can be back on top should they win tonight against Harimau Muda but league leaders Tampines Rovers will have a game in hand.
DPMM FC coach Steve Kean is gunning for all three points and also a clean sheet. Kean was disappointed on how DPMM FC were unlucky to concede against Courts Young Lions through a deflection but he feels defiant that DPMM FC will step up a gear and aim for a clean sheet tonight at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium.
He won’t be taking any team for granted even Harimau Muda. “If we don’t start properly like in our last match, the other team can score and make it difficult for us. I’m confident that we will get all three points after the way we finished last Sunday,” shared Kean during the interview.
“We need to get a clean sheet. We need to get back to where we were the first three games. We already know we can create chances and score goals. It is not just Wardun (keeper) and the back four, everybody needs to think like a defender once we lose possession and put pressure.”
Fans will be delighted to see the return of Subhi Abdillah who was missing from the last game due to a minor injury. Rodrigo Tosi was doubtful earlier this week but he managed to shake off the injury and he will be fit for tonight’s match as well. Tosi has instrumental in DPMM FC’s surge to the top with a few goals under his belt.
Will any of them be featured in the match tonight? I believe so 😀
Harimau Muda B coach Razip Ismail hopes his team won’t suffer the same fate as Courts Young Lions. He urged his team to double the efforts and just simply avoid any embarrassment and do not show fear to their opponents.
Did you know that Harimau Muda has conceded 17 goals in 6 games as compared to DPMM FC’s 4 goals? Many fans have predicted a comprehensive victory but this kind of games can be very tricky indeed. A point for the visitors will definitely put a smile on their faces. Harimau Muda has yet to earn a single point after six matches.
Tonight DPMM FC will take on Harimau Muda at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium and there will be another lucky draw for the supporters who will watch the match tonight especially those with $5 and $8 ticket. The first prizes will be an air fare for one to Kuala Lumpur and Indonesia and 8 consolation prizes. The winners will be announced at half-time of the match tonight.

Yay!! It’s almost complete. Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) has finally launched their inaugural flight of the Dreamliner Boeing 787 of Royal Brunei Airlines from Melbourne city, Australia. Today also marked the first time that RB will use the new uniform on all RB flights. There have been many positive points on RB’s new uniform and this is part of RB’s rebranding program and it’s no surprise that its rebranding program has received a Distinction Award in 2014 100 Global Awards.
In officiating the inaugural event was His Excellency Zakaria Ahmad, Brunei High Commissioner to Australia. The 787 fleet departed for Brunei today bringing the first passengers from Melbourne to Brunei Darussalam.
Congratulations RB on the milestone and they have just received their 3rd 787 fleet in Brunei. There is so much too boast about the Dreamliner and this is a sign that RB is heading to the right direction, not just for the comfort of their passengers but also a profitable business in a long run. A big shout out to the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for their leadership in reshaping RB into a boutique airline.
There are still more processes that need to refined and the biggest project to date is the renovation of the Brunei International Airport which has been undergoing major renovation under the direction of Brunei Economic Development Board.
Too bad I wasn’t able to join the inaugural flight from Melbourne due to the inaccessibility on my visa application. Good to know my social media buddy @marul69 was able to make it and hence, most of the pictures taken below are from his instagram 😀
