DPMM FC fanfare

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office handed out medals to the winners at DPMM FC Football Fanfare 2016 at Jerudong Mini Stadium last Sunday.

His Royal Highness Prince Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, graced the DPMM FC Singapore League (S-League) Football Fanfare 2016 at the Jerudong Mini Stadium last Sunday.

Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim took part in the fanfare playing under team International School Brunei (ISB) Sharks in the competition.

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean saw the fanfare as an aspiration for the young talents in the country.

“Today’s event was great. We had it last year. It gives the young players a taste of what it is like to come to Jerudong where we train every day,” said Kean.

“It gives them a little taste and hopefully gives them the enthusiasm and the application to push hard through their age groups and get into their final team.

The head coach also added that the club are close to bringing in three new young players to fill up the rest of the slots in the squad.

“It has not been finalised yet but we are getting close… we have brought in some players who are from the club’s Under-19 team, a goalkeeper, a centre midfielder and an attacking player who are going to push hard to try to get into the final squad,” continued the Scot. “I always think that if you’re old enough to push to the end of the squad, it doesn’t matter if you are young (17, 18 or 19)… if I think they are good enough, they will play.

“They are not just here to make up the numbers, they are here to get to the start of it,” he added.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) president Zainuddin Nordin was on hand to give a speech prior to the matches yesterday.

“It is great to see so many eager boys and girls at this annual Brunei DPMM FC S-league fanfare and this is indeed a special kickoff to the S-League season,” said Zainuddin in his speech.

“It is super special because Brunei DPMM FC are the reigning champions of the S-League as we go into the 21st season of the S-League. On behalf of the Football Association of Singapore and the S-league, I would like to extend my greatest and heartiest congratulations to Brunei DPMM FC for winning the 20th edition and in doing so, the club has won the distinction of being only the second foreign team to have won the S-league in the 20 year history of Singapore professional football league.

“It is indeed a highly commendable achievement for Brunei DPMM FC and one that it thoroughly deserves,” he added.

The DPMM FC S-League Football Fanfare is the club’s annual programme held before they start off their S-League season. The country’s only professional club claimed their first S-League title last year after finishing second best in 2014 and 2012. They will face Singapore Cup holder Albirex Niigata FC (S) in the community shield on February 13 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore. Progresif have been gaining traction especially last year where they have increase number of new customers. The free sim card and the delivery have been a good marketing gimmick. Also the Progesif customers at one stage get 100% bonus credit when they top up last November. So there are many interesting promotions along the way.

This time, they have a new promotion that I believe will drive more new clients is the “Handset Plan Promotion”. Now you can pay as low as BND 9 to enjoy a new phone such as the VIVO Xshot or the Huawei P7 and pick and Postpaid Plan from BND 25, BND 40 or BND 60. You can check out the Handset Plans here.

A few days ago, Progresif also relaunched their flagship store at Times Square Shopping Centre. Present were Progresif Chairman Hj Abu Bakar Hj Ibrahim, Progresif Chief Sales Officer Bob Gill and the Managing Director of Times Square Shopping Complex, Tan Kah Boon. Congratulations Progresif on the relaunch.

The season’s over

Steve Kean won Coach of the Year. Image courtesy of S•League

The season has concluded and DPMM FC and the management have worked their socks off for a wonderful season and winning their first ever S•League title. Now they are on a mini-break for a few weeks before they are back training again.

Recently DPMM FC won a few accolades including Coach of the Year (Steve Kean) and Young Player of the Year (Azwan Ali Rahman) feted at Singapore League Awards last week. It was a well deserved award for Steve Kean as he missed out last season. As for Azwan Ali, he has been very consistent with his performance all around and week in, week out, he had made an impact to DPMM FC.

Two years ago, Azwan Ali was in a difficult position as his former club Indera FC was reluctant to let him go. In the end, he made the right choice to join the only professional club, DPMM FC, in Brunei Darussalam and his adventure started with a bang. Let’s hope for better things for Azwan Ali in the new season.

Now the biggest question will be the current import players of DPMM FC. With the new ruling of allowance of three import players, this will put a dent in Kean’s strategy as he has trusted the five import players throughout the season. All of them are instrumental in bringing the first ever S•League title to the club. Now it boils down to Kean and the management of DPMM FC on who will be sacrificed for the next season.

My pick would be Paulo Sergio, Rafael Ramazotti and Boris Raspudic. However, according to DPMM FC’s website, Rafael has turned down an offer to extend his contract with DPMM FC. It remains to be seen who will be the chosen one to replace Rafa. The club have renewed the contract of Paulo Sergio and Brian McLean for the next season. This means that Boris Raspudic and Joe Gamble are being released.

A few days ago, DPMM FC had a meet and greet session for the fans at The Mall. It was organised by I Lyke Toh Entertainment and the players and fans had a great time together. It was another way to appreciate the fans for supporting the football club.

It was the first time I attended a DJ competition in a very long, long time. I remember back in the early 2000s, I was involved in the team that brought international DJs regionally and it was also showcasing the local talents that we have such as DJ Felix and DJ Leiley to name a few.

Fast forward to now, it’s a whole different landscape with stricter rules and regulations that the Bruneians have to follow when it comes to local entertainment. The talented musicians have to find alternatives or be more creative in showcasing their talents without crossing the line (of the laws). If you think about it, to make a music showcase possible, then it shows that we have to be a step ahead and be more creative to make things happen.

Hence to have a DJ Mix Competition is already a great start despite the limitations to the organisers and the public. The seasoned DJs shared their vision in helping the young blood (DJs) to learn about mixing music and one avenue is to have competition. The three day event also involved a DJ Mix workshop (on Sunday) to give more knowledge on mixing and the techniques to the local DJs. One of the DJs, @leiley_lim shared that Brunei DJs have the best equipment regionally but lacking the avenue to share their talent to the public.

The organisers and the partners were happy with the overall competition and workshop as it was a successful one. It was also great to see the DJ Mioy, DJ Leiley and DJ Felix working together for the benefit of the community in a longer run.

Below are the winners and ranks for the respective categories.

Open Class Category:
Winner : DJ Amad
1st Runner-up : Jimmyroll
2nd Runner-up : Fiiz The Shiiz
4th : DJ Izra
5th : Aeros
6th : Mask

Rookies Category:

A blood drive

A welcoming remark to the Filipino community

In collaboration with the Embassy of The Republic of The Philippines, The Jerudong Park Medical Centre held a blood donation drive, open to the Filipino Community. The objective of the blood donation drive was to raise awareness on the importance of donating blood, in saving lives and contributing to blood banks in Brunei Darussalam.

“Blood banks always need volunteering blood donors.” said Romeo Tabios, JPMC’s blood bank nurse. “Giving 15 minutes of your time by donating blood can help save lives.” Blood donation not only gives back to society, but also provides physical and mental benefits to the donors’ health. Donating blood helps to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as burn calories.

The drive was held at the Philippines Chancery, Embassy of The Republic of The Philippines from 3pm – 5pm, and received a total of more than 30 interested donors, who contributed to a good cause.

Before donating blood, donors were interviewed on their brief health history and screened for basic physical health. Donors were made aware of certain factors to consider, such as pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, cholesterol, and haemoglobin levels. Blood donors were also screened for infectious diseases.

The Jerudong Park Medical Centre hopes for future collaborations to aid the blood banks in the country. Images courtesy of Jerudong Park Medical Centre.

The elusive title now belongs to DPMM FC

Lightning only struck twice

DPMM FC needed three seasons to learn their lesson from not choking in the finale of the S•League championship and what a wonderful way to win the championship on home soil. Twice they were close but lost the grip of the title and many wondered if the jinx could be broken. This was the only title that they are really hungry for and they repaid their fans with a sublime finale at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium last night.

The title was fought between DPMM FC and Tampines Rovers FC with both having crucial games at their respective home ground. The advantage was on DPMM FC side as they were hosting Balestier Khalsa, a team they failed to beat during the season twice (home and away). Hence the final game was a do-or-die match for the host and it was their title to lose, having the upper hand against their closest rival.

When looking into season, it was a wise decision to let go Tosi Rodrigo and Roberto Alvez, both who have been instrumental in DPMM FC’s good run to the S•League campaign for the past few years but they weren’t the missing puzzle. Having already established great rapport with their local fans, it was a decision (of letting them go) that wasn’t favoured by fans. To make it more interesting, Tampines Rovers FC signed the released players from DPMM FC. It would have been a tough act to swallow should Tampines Rovers FC won the title with the help of former DPMM FC players. But it wasn’t to be. It was Steve Kean’s time to shine. And surely he did with the right signings.

In came the likes of Paulo Sergio, Rafael Ramazotti and Stuart McLean, signed by Steve Kean and in him, we trust that DPMM FC have found the missing puzzle to the title equation. The former Blackburn Rovers manager won his first competitive league title (S•League) and it was a title not only for DPMM FC but for the fans who have been showing up and watching DPMM FC playing year after year.

There are a few key factors why DPMM FC have been consistent throughout this season. It was a tale sign when Craig Fagan of DPMM FC was sidelined for the season and DPMM FC had to scout for a replacement and in came, Paulo Sergio from Portugal. He settled in and gelled with the team in a short span of time and his partnership with Rafael was superb. That’s one of the reasons why DPMM FC had the most team goals in the S•League with Rafael taking the honours of being top goal scorer in the league.

Another factor is the growth of Azwan Ali as a player. This is probably his best season to date. He showed much confidence on the pitch and feared no opponent with his mazy runs at any position. As he had shown last night, he caused a lot of problems for Tampines Rovers and unfortunate not have scored on a couple of occasions. He had a minor disciplinary problem in the middle of the season and he grew from that and focused on his game. Definitely one of the stars for DPMM FC this season.

The final factor from my point of view is the depth of the squad. Steve Kean may find this a solution or even causing some minor headaches when it comes to selection process. In the end, it all paid off. The rotation policy worked and everyone was chipping in their efforts. Rosmin “Bobby” Kamis, the captain talisman for DPMM FC, had a lot of bench time in the beginning of the season and eventually won his place back in the starting line-up. Kudos to Steve Kean in managing the mood in the dressing room to keep the players motivated and with a single intention of winning trophies.

I won’t talk so much about the match last night but I want to single out one player and that is Paulo Sergio. He gave a different dimension to DPMM FC and it was pretty hard to mark him as well. His first goal may have been a fluke but the other two goals showed that he is also sharp in the box. He could have scored more than just a hat trick but that would be asking too much of a player who has contributed so much in the match alone. He was even generous, gifting a goal to Rafael late in the game to make it 4-0. I was worried when he was touching his calf earlier in the first half but he lasted the whole game with his match winning performance.

Another notable mention is Wardun Yussof in goal. He has always aimed for a clean sheet in every match. Even though the team is winning by a big margin, a clean sheet is his main aim. Last night, when the defenders failed to contain the Balistier’s strikers, Wardun was up to the task. He thwarted at least a few goal bound attempts to relieve of the fans. I’m pretty sure there’s a few years left in him. What a solid display from him in goals!!

All in all, a wonderful season to cap off for DPMM FC and well done to the management of DPMM FC who have worked tremendously well throughout the campaign.

Paul Sergio was spectacular last night. I hope he stays for a few good season for DPMM FC.

Can DPMM FC clinch their maiden S•League title this weekend? Image courtesy of S•League Facebook Page.
This is it!! It’s down to the wire… DPMM FC has another chance and in the driving seat to win the S•League for the first time ever.. Yes, first time ever.. The final game will take place this Saturday evening 21st November at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. They will take on Balestier Khalsa the team that have defeated DPMM FC twice this season with a 2-1 score line. It will be the toughest and also the most crucial game for DPMM FC. It’s a must win.. Simple as that..

The other team in the race for the title is Tampines Rover FC. They will face Harimau Muda in the final day of the season too. DPMM FC can still clinch the title if the host draw with Balestier and Tampines only win by a single goal. But of course, a win is much better.

T-shirts will be handed out to spectators on a first come first serve basis, and there are also 25 lucky draw prizes up for grabs including three return tickets – with the destination yet to be determined – sponsored by Royal Brunei (RB). Furthermore there will be NO ENTRY FEE for the final match between DPMM FC and Balestier Khalsa FC. Good news to all DPMM FC players.

Good luck and I shall be covering the match this Saturday too.

The Sexy Audi TT

Look at the new Audi TTS. Sleeker and powerful. I love everything about this car.

I took the Audi TTS for a good spin yesterday

My experience: Pretty awesome!!! The closest thing I drove as a sports boutique car. It felt pretty low and it was pretty stable when I took it for a test drive. I had the privilege to drive the beautiful blue Audi TTS edition, courtesy of T.C.Y. Motors yesterday.

What impressed me is the Audi Virtual Cockpit. This is something new introduced in Audi models and now you don’t need a digital dashboard as everything appears behind the steering wheel. The 12.3 inch display monitor is enough to give enough information to the driver and you can even switch modes by clicking the menu on the steering wheel. I haven’t really explore the Audi Virtual Cockpit but looks impressive so far.

I remember seeing the first edition of the Audi TT a couple of years ago. Yes, it did look sexy back then but now the latest design and body give a sexier feel and I love the sporty kit on the Audi TTS edition. For the TTS model, you will also enjoy the sound system of Bang & Olufsen. I’m still bummed that I wasn’t able to make it to Denmark for the Bang & Olufsen’s event back in October.

If you want to check out the Audi TTS version, head over to T.C.Y. Motors during office hours. It’s the best Audi TT model among the lot with 310 horsepower output with a new generation of quattro all-drive system (4 wheel drive). I hope to get another test drive again 😀 (Thanks, John).

Handling is superb even in corners

The Audi Virtual Cockpit is innovative

The blind spot light alerts off incoming cars from the side

A modern classic, redesigned and reborn: The third generation of the iconic Audi TT arrived on the global market in 2014, and it continues to fascinate with the driving dynamics of a sports car. It’s operating concept centered around its digital cockpit sets new standards of excellence.

Design and body
Audi designers reinterpreted the lines of the original 1998 TT and added dynamic facets to the design. Audi offers headlights with LED technology or Matrix LED technology. Dynamic turn signals are another feature of the lighting system. The headlights are designed with a pattern of divider bars that emit the daytime driving lights. The tail lights also contain continually illuminated bars of light.

The body of the TT represents a new evolutionary stage of the Audi Space Frame (ASF). The occupant cell plus all the components of the outer shell and attached parts are made of aluminium. The TT 2.0 TFSI with 6-speed S tronic transmission sets the new benchmark for low weight at just 1,260 kg (without driver). With the S line exterior package, it attains a low Cd figure of 0.29.

Drive system
Audi Brunei is offering the new generation TT with the 2.0 TFSI with 169 kW (230 hp) and 370 Nm (272.9 lb‑ft) of torque paired with a six-speed S tronic and a new evolutionary stage of the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system (for the TTS).

Chassis
Clutch management is incorporated into the 5-mode Audi drive select. This system lets the driver control the operation of key technology modules in a variety of different modes. These modules include the adaptive damper control system Audi magnetic ride (optional).

Other chassis highlights include progressive steering, four-link rear suspension and electronic stabilization control (ESC). ESC functions include torque vectoring, which is activated in fast cornering – it optimizes handling as necessary by means of very slight brake interventions on the unloaded wheels at the inside of a curve.

Interior and controls
The interior of the new Audi TT has light, sporty styling. Viewed from above, the instrument panel resembles an airplane wing. The round air vents, a classic feature of the TT, incorporate all of the controls for the air conditioning system. The newly developed lightweight sport seats are mounted low. The luggage compartment of the 2+2 seater has a capacity of 305 to 712 litres (10.8 to 25.1 cu ft).

In the user interface concept, which is entirely focused on the driver, the Audi Virtual Cockpit replaces both the analog instrument cluster and the MMI monitor. The driver can toggle the 12.3-inch display between two different viewing modes. In the classic view, the speedometer and tachometer take center stage. In Infotainment mode, more space is given.

The physical buttons of the MMI monitor have been limited to six in number. The top-of-the-range version also incorporates the MMI smart touchwheel – the round rotary touchpad in the top of the rotary/push-button control. The menu structure was inspired by a smartphone and includes a free-text MMI search function. The voice control system understands a large number of expressions from everyday speech.

Assistance systems and infotainment
The line-up of driver assistance systems for the new TT extends from Audi Side Assist to Parking Aid with display of the surroundings and a rear-view camera (for the TTS).

The Bang & Olufsen Sound System (for the TTS) utilizes a newly developed algorithm to reproduce audio signals with an even greater sense of space and precision.

The new Audi TT won the top overall award in the “Connected Car 2014” poll conducted among readers of Auto Bild and Computer Bild magazines.

Audi Brunei will offer the new TT in 3 variants: the base model with 18” wheels, an S line version and the top of the range TTS with 310 bhp output, new generation of the quattro® permanent all-wheel drive system with Audi TT-specific configuration and exclusive 19” wheels.

One more game

Highlights of DPMM FC taking on Warriors FC last night

As Rosmin Kamis always state on his social media status, impossible is nothing. One more game, lads. Image courtesy of Ismail Sulaiman of S•League.

Just one more game. I haven’t been covering any DPMM FC matches since the beginning of the season but only posted some results and pictures during the season. But I have been keeping track with their progress and for the first time in many years, DPMM FC are on the brink of lifting the S•League title which have been eluding them for the past few years.

The closest DPMM FC ever had was last season where they failed to capitalize their lead in the standings and eventually settled as runners-up. The other season where they were placed 2nd was back in 2012. The leadership under Steve Kean has brought fresh approach to DPMM FC’s attacking measures.

The new imports have given DPMM FC a different dimension after letting go the fan favourites Tosi Rodrigo and Roberto Alvez, where both are playing for Tampines Rovers, a club that only has the chance to overtake DPMM FC should they win all their remaining matches and DPMM FC to lose the final game of the season against Balestier Khalsa FC.

Last night, DPMM FC was in fourth gear as they dominated the game against Warriors FC and chalked up a 3-1 victory at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Singapore. Goals came from Paulo Sergio, Rafael Ramazotti and Boris Raspudic.

I believe the next home game will draw more spectators as it will be the final game of the season and also to celebrate DPMM FC’s maiden S•League title should they win their final match or hope for Tampines Rovers to slip up in their remaining fixtures (3 more games).

So mark your dates on 21st November as DPMM FC will take on Balestier Khalsa FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Well done to the management of DPMM FC, the coach and the players for making this an exciting finale. Just another 90 minutes and we hope to see fireworks.

Congratulations Reza and Tara

Congratulations to my friends, Major Pengiran Mohammad Shamsul Reza bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Hj Tengah and Tara Abdullah Teo @ Tracey Teo Lee Ying on their wedding function last weekend. My friendship with Reza began during our student life in St. Andrew’s School. We were big fans of figurines such as M•A•S•K and He-Man to name a few. We kinda lost track after we headed off to different countries for future studies and I totally lost contact with him. So after two decades of knowing you, you are now a married man 😀 All the best in your new chapter with Tara and may Allah bless your new journey.

I’m currently in Kuching with buddies from Brunei toastmasters (Brunei Speakers’ Club, OTTERS and UBD Toastmasters) and we are all attending the 5th Annual District Convention. I shall be here until the weekend and I hope to learn something valuable from the trip apart from bonding with my friends. It’s good to be back in Kuching.

DPMM FC update

DPMM FC broke the jinx

Finally DPMM FC broke the old jinx of not winning against Tampines Rovers. They have not beaten them in 7 attempts since 2012 (two draws and five losses). Last night DPMM FC was back to winning ways and they scored a 2-0 victory over the visitors now coached by Sundramoorthy, former Singapore football player.

Goals were scored by impressive import Sergio and Ramazotti and it was also the return of Rodrigo Tosi and Roberto Alvez, former DPMM FC players, who are now contracted with Tampines Rovers. It was a bitter sweet return for both players who have contributed during their years as DPMM FC players. The only setback for DPMM FC was the dismissal of Azwan Ali late in the game. It was one weird altercation when Azwan Ali flick his boot towards his own teammate Boris Raspudic and yes, that was totally unexpected and it had to happen in front of a home crowd.

That altercation also sparked a heated confrontation between Wardun Yussof and Boris but the situation was cooled down. DPMM FC coach Steve Kean said he hasn’t seen such thing in a long time and he pointed out that Azwan Ali made a big mistake last night. He is certain such thing won’t happen again in the future matches.

DPMM FC are currently in good form in the S•League with two games in hand and let’s hope the momentum stays that way. DPMM FC’s next match will be this Thursday, 14th May against Albirex Niigata FC (S) at Jurong East Stadium, Singapore.

DPMM FC remains undefeated

The highlights of Warriors FC vs DPMM FC

Brunei DPMM FC continued their unbeaten run in the 2015 Great Eastern-Yeo’s S.League on Friday evening after defeating Warriors FC 3-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Two early goals from Rafael Ramazotti set the Wasps on the way to victory before Paulo Sergio netted a penalty to wrap it up despite a spirited comeback from Warriors FC in the second-half, which saw Nicolas Velez pull a goal back.

This means Brunei DPMM FC are still undefeated but still lie in 3rd place with two games in hand. It was a pity that Joe Gamble was sent off for an off-the-ball incident late in the game.

Brunei DPMM FC: Wardun Yussof, Aminuddin Zakwan, Brian McLean, Boris Raspudic, Sairol Sahari (C), Helmi Zambin (Yura Indera Putra 61’), Joseph Gamble, Hendra Azam (Rosmin Kamis 79’), Azwan Ali, Paulo Sergio, Rafael Ramazotti

Warriors FC: Daniel Ong, Nur Asyidiq Sukarto (Fazli Jaffar 90+2’), Daniel Bennett (C), Marin Vidosevic, Irwan Shah, Thomas Beattie (Hafiz Rahim 46’), Kevin McCann, Emmeric Ong (Shi Jiayi 67’), Miroslav Pejic, Nicolas Velez, Fazrul Nawaz.

BIBD Ar-Rahnu update

BIBD Ar-Rahnu yesterday hosted members of the Muslimah Jemaah from the Sultan Sharif Ali Mosque in Sengkurong, who were greeted by BIBD’s Head of Ar-Rahnu, Hjh Rosminah Binti Hj Abd Wahid.

The purpose of the visit was to better understand the benefits of BIBD’s micro- credit facilities for SMEs offered by BIBD Ar-Rahnu, and to also gain better knowledge of Islamic banking products. The visit also included a tour around the BIBD Ar-Rahnu premises.

BIBD AR-Rahnu provides quick Shariah-based pawn-broking using gold items and precious stones as collateral for short-term financing of up to twelve months. The financing is also useful for those who don’t qualify for conventional financing, such as those without fixed income.

The financing can also be used for obtaining capital to start up short-term businesses like setting up food stalls during major national events such as the birthday celebrations of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the National Day celebrations, and the Ramadhan stalls.

Premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron

I still missed the premiere of The Avengers: Age of Ultron and I still haven’t watch the movie since it’s not out in Hua Hin, Thailand just yet. It is slated to be released next week. So I have to wait for the release in Thailand since I will be here for another week. I just love the IMAX experience in Siam Paragon, Thailand. Way better than Shaw Theaters, Singapore.

However, it was a successful event where fan boys and girls of Marvel caught the marathon of The Avengers at Times Cineplex (Times Square, Empire, Tutong and KB). There are also selling The Avengers: Age of Ultron merchandise at all the outlets. I’m still eyeing for the t-shirt as well as the popcorn metal bucket.

What’s the rating so far? I would say that judging from my peers on IG, the reviews are slightly in 7s and above. The scores in rotten tomatoes is currently at 80% from 71 reviews as compared to Marvel’s The Avengers which hit 92% from 311 reviews. So it seems that it won’t top the 92% mark in RT if the number of reviews hit over 300. Give and take, it will reach in the high 70% by the end of the month. You can check out my friend Tiffany’s review here.

Earth Day in Brunei

A great turnout last Tuesday

A total of 128 volunteers managed to collect 2,062 kilogrammes (kg) of waste at the Tungku Beach in a cleaning campaign organised by the Beach Bunch to mark Earth Day last Wednesday.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Beach Bunch President Rizan Latif said it was the group’s first clean-up this year, held in commemoration of the Earth Day.

He said that Tungku Beach was chosen as the location because it represents “the debilitating condition between human and nature that now creates chaos”.

“Beaches like the Tungku Beach is being used daily and we want to raise public awareness to ensure that the beach is always kept clean,” said Rizan.

He added that it was a positive event as “128 people came and were committed to say no to a dirty beach”.

He said with the recent revamp of Serasa beach, beach visitors and business owners have moved to Tungku beach, resulting to large number of visitors on weekends and their litter.

“Beach Bunch wants to create a better image of Tungku beach as well as to educate visitors for a more pleasant environment,” he said.

“It’s more like contributing back to the community and it’s a stand to tell that for Beach Bunch, littering is not the way to go and we must be responsible,” he continued.

When asked why the bad habit is still practised by irresponsible beach goers, Rizan said it’s because people have this ‘someone will clean it up’ mindset.

“Some people may see that the place is already dirty, so [they] might as well just litter. Others may want to be responsible but there are no allocated trash bins around the site so they litter. But the worst is the “someone else will clean it up” mindset that some people have,” he said.

Rizan added that while changing the mindsets of these irresponsible individuals is difficult, it is not impossible as various steps have been taken to create awareness about the effects of littering.

“We’ve held a couple of awareness sessions at schools and carried out a series of beach cleaning campaign so people can take part and be more aware,” he said.

Various schools, colleges and private companies came to support the clean-up, including International School Brunei (ISB), Politeknik Brunei, Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB), Yayasan Secondary School, Mashhor Group Sdn Bhd, Takaful Brunei Darussalam and Standard Chartered Bank. Hello March

Written by Rano Iskandar. Posted in News, RA News

Hello March

I didn’t expect the long break from blogging but I’m back again. You can still stalk me on @ranoadidas instagram for updates though. I have been away and was in the Philippines for the weekend for a FitFlop event. Yes, you heard me right, a FitFlop occasion. I’m actually quite honoured to be part of the media list for FitFlop and it’s slowly to show its promise in Brunei Darussalam, after Hua Ho managed to bring in the brand to the Sultanate last year.

My mom is such a huge fan of FitFlop too especially when she shops at Metro in Paragon, Singapore. The only problem is that Fitflops are catered to females. Literally 98% of their collections are for the ladies. I was giving a few pairs courtesy of FitFlop Philippines during their recent SS15 media launch and I have to admit FitFlop are pretty comfortable sandals. For those who know me, I hardly were sandals for a “reason”. I shall be posting more stories on FitFlop SS15 latest collection in my future post.

I was in Bohol, the Philippines for the launch of the FitFlop SS15 Spring collection. More updates soon.

I missed two big events, well, one was bigger than the other which was the Regata Brunei Darussalam which took place yesterday at the Royal Wharf. It is a yearly event and I covered it for the past three years. It is always great to know His Majesty the Sultan is a regular participant of the Regata Brunei Darussalam. His Majesty was in the boat Rajawali which won the 500m special race, compromising of the Regata Brunei Darussalam Committee Team A.

Another event was DPMM FC’s opening seasoner game against Harimau Muda B where new import Rafael Ramazotti bagged a hat-trick with a 3-1 victory at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. The new looked DPMM FC retained the services of foreign imports Joe Gamble and Boris Raspudic but it was Rafael (Rafa) that stole the limelight. It could have been a clean sheet for DPMM FC but there were unlucky with the deflection late in the game. Nonetheless a deserving victory for DPMM FC but it is still early days.

This morning, I attended a press conference held by AITI and it was regards to the official announcement of the FREE incoming calls for both mobile operators – DST and Progresif Cellular. Before the announcement came, both the local mobile operators have taken quick steps to implement the new move of removing the charges for incoming calls. Awesome!! I shall go more into details in my next post. Finally after 20 years, DST has officially removed charges for incoming call and Progesif Cellular have also made it a win-win situation for their customers. This initiative was from AITI for your information to benefit the end users of mobile users in Brunei Darussalam.

My Chinese year celebration has been slightly muted and that’s how I wanted it to be anyway. I’ve been feeling the pinch in terms of my sleeping patterns but it should re-adjust to its usual timing …. in a few weeks’ time 😀 My apologies for those invitations that I wasn’t able to make it. There were simply too many invitations to entertain. I have a few more before the end of CNY which falls this Thursday. This year, I only managed to catch two lion dance performance. It must have been tough for the other associations with the newer laws on lion dance in Brunei.

At Chin Wei’s open house last night

A quick catch up with Lily Chiam over her small CNY lunch invitation

Ok, about time for me to sign off first and blend into my social world of visiting friends (open house). I’m craving for maggi curry but I don’t want to burden our home chef 😀 I’ll just wait an extra hour before I eat at my friend’s open house tonight. Thank you for reading and thank you for your patience. You can always stalk my IG aka instagram for updates 😀 and Happy Birthday to my sister, Muji, and love you loads 😀
