The King of Buffets
If there was a series related to Sungkai buffet in a Game of Thrones format, the Freshco Sungkai Mega Buffet rules the roast. My oh my… I actually never tried their Sungkai Mega Buffet before and wow, I was more than impressed. Ok, I would even say that the choices are more than Carousel and Straits Kitchen in Singapore. So it’s more than safe to say that it’s the biggest variety of dishes for a Sungkai buffet in Brunei. It’s like you can dine there the whole night if they allow :p But as usual, I’m very selective to my food choices unlike my friends who tried quite a lot of dishes.
My favourite dish is the Beef Rendang from Waerong Penyet and that’s enough to satisfy my crave for dinner. Do try the savoury crab especially the sauce (definitely a winner). The food choices are just aplenty that I have to find a way to edit the photos to make sure I don’t flood this post with food, food and more food. Well, you can check the whole archives of photos from Thanis Lim’s blog post and it’s pretty comprehensive.
This year’s set up is much better than last year’s and it’s for the better flow of traffic and logistics for the patrons throughout Ramadhan. Did you know that it can fit at least 400 pax? Last night’s count was in the mid 200s which is quite a number, considering it’s not even pay day. That says a lot about how great the Freshco Sungkai Mega Buffet is.
Another reason for their attraction is that they have a combo of restaurants involved under one roof – All Seasons Restaurant, Sushi Tei, Pastamania, Waroeng Penyet, Auntie Anne’s, I Love Yoo and Killeney’s. Now that’s just amazing and pretty smart to have all in one especially having different international franchise brands.
So which means the buffet this year is bigger than last year and this shows that the management have learnt a thing or two from previous Sungkai experience. Even the staff are aplenty to make sure the buffet dishes are refilled for the satisfaction of the patrons. Service is definitely there. I wonder how they can up their game for next year’s Sungkai. Ok, let’s focus on the present and be awe on how Freshco has grabbed the attention of buffet lovers. Anyway, tomorrow 25th June, Thursday, if you pay with your BIBD Credit Card, you will get 30%.
Guess what? They also have Mega Sungkai Buffet at KB Sentral and it’s called the KB Sentral Grand Buffet. You can read more of the details from Cyril’s entry. I shall be covering that perhaps next week or so. You can also check out Freshco Facebook Page for updates.

Until July 13, shoppers will earn double Royal Skies miles with a minimum spending of $15 in a single receipt.
Royal Skies Manager Yasmin Abdullah said the airline is constantly looking at new ways to provide frequent flyers new benefits and ways of redeeming their air miles.
“With the partnership effort between Freshco Supermarket and Royal Skies, we in Freshco, strongly believe that we will achieve our shared goal in giving our customers a more rewarding shopping experience,” said the management of Freshco in a press statement.
“The management of Freshco supermarket value the importance of this tie up with Royal Skies as most of their members are already a regular Freshco shoppers,” the statement added.
In celebrating the new partnership, the store organised an ‘amazing race’ activity last Friday to reward its shoppers.
Six teams of two geared up for the race. Three teams emerged as winners and each won 5000 Royal Skies miles, goodie bags as well as Freshco shopping vouchers.
Apart from that, shoppers also earned 10 Royal Skies miles for every $10 spent at the store yesterday. The supermarket announced it has also extended its operating hours until midnight daily to give more shopping time to their customers. Text courtesy of Joana Tan of The Brunei Times.

The first awareness and ice-breaker will be in Kuala Belait tomorrow. It’s free entry and dinner provided as well. To RSVP, do contact Del 8747521 and the venue will be held at Wan Shan Restaurant
The Young Entrepreneurs Association Brunei (YEAB),will be hosting a dinner and awareness event to attract new members into the association on Thursday 19th June. The event will be held at Wan Shan restaurant at Unit 18 & 19, Lot 7191, in Jalan Jaya Negara, Pandan 4, Kuala Belait.
I recently caught up with Del Goh, the President of YEAB and this is what he has to say about tomorrow’s event as well as YEAB in the long run.
RA: What’s in store for this year and give me a few good reasons why young and hungry entrepreneurs should sign up for YEAB?
Del Goh: Doing business in Brunei a lot of times boil down to who you know. And it’s never a bad thing to know more people. YEAB could potentially open up a new door to many new faces, faces that come with many life experiences that could help guide those new up-and-comers, or spark potential future partnerships.
We already have the rest of the year planned out in terms of activities, be it a festive get-together during Hari Raya or raising funds for a good cause with a big event. You will have to keep checking back with us for details.
RA: You have traveled many places and what do you see collectively in SMEs in other countries? Are they more active?
Del Goh: Brunei is unique. We are a small country with an even smaller population. A lot of things that other countries are doing on a larger scale we may not be able to do. But there are also things that we have and they don’t, and one of them is the “interconnectedness” of our strong ties in this close-knit community. But having said that, look at what YEAB did last year with the ASEAN Summit. So we can play big, but we just have to play smarter at the same time.
RA: The first networking meeting will be held at KB. Any catch?
Del Goh: No. We thought we would reach out to the KB community too because a lot of things and events always happen in Bandar area. And the Belait community are inevitably left out most of the time. We as an association want to include everyone. No doubt we won’t be able to do this in every area but Belait is the second largest district so why not do it there too?
RA: Do you think they are growing numbers of young entrepreneurs compared to a few year’s ago?
Del Goh: Definitely. A whole lot more. Look at how many more outlets and shops and franchise businesses have come in. Cafes are booming, eateries have never been more competitive, and most of them are managed by youths. It’s a great time to do business here.
RA: Who are the mentors that you have identified for YEAB?
Del Goh: We are all volunteers here. Nobody is getting a salary. We all do what we can, as long as there is the willingness. All of us can be mentors to those who need it. And depending on what a particular person needs, we will be able to point them in the right direction with our collective experience and contacts.
RA: Lastly, why should students be part of this? I see that you have allowed students to join with a $25 yearly membership.
Del Goh: Students, youths, they are the future. It’s important to have one’s base strong. That would lead to an smoother progression later on. So by joining YEAB, with the amount of exposure that we get, the amount of invitations to talks and seminars that we receive from different companies and ministries, it’s a great way to gain some insights and education on the entrepreneurial front. And by being in an association like this, they get to broaden their network and can ask the right questions to the right people.
The End
So there you go, peeps!! Just a quick run down of what to expect from YEAB and for new potential members, there will be an annual subscription fee of BND 200. You will know know what opportunities will open for you in the near future.

Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) last night formalised the agreement to order seven more A320neo aircraft from Airbus and these aircrafts will be used for short-haul destinations. The delivery of the first A320neo will be in 2018, four years from now but it’s a strategic plan by RB for their long term progress in the competitive aviation industry. The difference between the A320neo and the current A320 is the fuel efficiency. At the moment, RB has four A320s and three or four B787 for their operations. The idea of the new A320neo is to replace the current models.
The A320neo will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1127G-JM engines and the seven aircrafts are valued at USD 720 million. The signing took place at The Empire Hotel & Country Club and signing on behalf of RB was the Chairman Dato Paduka Hj Bahrin bin Abdullah while on behalf of Airbus was Mr. Jean Francois Laval, Airbus Executive Vice President Asia and signing on behalf of Pratt & Whitney was Mr. Phil Ma, Regional Sales Director of Pratt & Whitney.
Did you know RB has been operating on the A320 since 2003? So it’s a good sign that RB is looking ahead of the future by buying seven new ones to replace the current A320s and the latest NEO version will bring even greater levels of efficiency with 15% less fuel and significantly reduced impact on the environment. The new Airbus will have much better in-flight comfort and longer flying range and significant underfloor cargo capability.
The A320 family of Airbus is the world’s best-selling single aisle product line and they have more than 10,200 orders to date and over 6,000 aircrafts delivered. I shall talk more on the specs of the A320neo in my later post.

May the 4th was celebrated around the world as the adopted Star Wars Day, a day where fans of the franchise can show their colours of being with either The Dark Side or the Rebel Alliance. In Brunei, FreshCo was invaded by a motley crew of characters including Darth Vader, Mrs Vader, Vader Junior. a riot of storm troopers, Chewbacca, Jabba the Hut and many more, all volunteers from the local chapter of the 501st Legion, a fan group with affiliations worldwide, dedicated to dressing up as their favourite characters.
DJ Izan from Pilihan FM led the parade around Fresh Co, with shoppers and fans swarming them to take pictures. Gong Cha also gave out vouchers for free drinks thirsty troopers and fans, making it an awesome afternoon. May the 4th Be With You.
By the way, you may have heard that J.J. Abrams has called the shots on the casts for the much anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII and guess who are back?? The old casts of the Star Wars series – Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO to name a few. Not sure how J.J. Abrams gonna pull this off and of course, he also announced new stars too which are not A-list stars but familiar to our eyes. The movie is scheduled for December 2015 release. Now that’s pretty cool. I’m looking forward to this than Man of Steel’s sequel.
One of the poster teasers for Episode VII but it will released by December 2015 instead of May as stated in the poster

Can DPMM FC continue their scoring spree momentum tonight?
DPMM FC will be gunning for their third win in a row as they will be hosted by Hougang United FC who can prove to be a tricky customer for DPMM FC. Brunei’s only professional club scored 11 goals in the last two games against two bottom teams – Courts Young Lions and Harimau Muda and they are on a scoring spree but the most important key for Steve Kean is getting another clean sheet for DPMM FC.
“We have an appetite to go and have a few more goals and the best part about our last game is the clean sheet as well. So we are very hopeful that we can get a clean sheet and get all three points,” said Kean during the interview at the Brunei International Airport before taking off to Singapore.
Kean did admit that Hougang United has cause some surprises in the S•League this season. “I have watched some of their games on DVD and they are good at putting the ball in the box and it will be a tough game.”
However, DPMM FC will be without two key players – Rosmin Kamis (Bobby) and Sairol Sahari who scored in the last game. According to Kean, Bobby should be back for the following game next week as he was being rested, recovering from two calves strains. Sairol will be rested for some tight strain on his hip.
Kean is ready to hand Azwan Salleh and Hendra, their first start of the season, replacing the positions of Sairol and Bobby respectively. The head coach is confident of Bobby’s replacement, Hendra, and he has shown some maturity while coming off the bench in the past few matches. This will be a big game for Hendra indeed.
Rodrigo Tosi will prove to be a huge threat as he has already bagged seven goals this season. He shared how the squad this season was very much different from his previous stints and one point that he highlighted was the mentality of his team mates that has made the difference. The Brazilian is also wary of Hougang’s improvements this season and he will do his best to bring in three points for DPMM FC and of course, add to his goal tally.
Hougang United FC will host DPMM FC tonight at Hougang Stadium, Singapore. You can catch some live updates on their Twitter and instagram handle @officialdpmmfc

The Minister of Education and The Minister of Development with the Board of Directors of ISB, management of ISB and students of ISB at the groundbreaking ceremony of ISB new campus at Kg Sg Hanching
The Minister of Education and The Minister of Development with the architect, consultants and contractors of the new ISB campus
The comments have been flourish on my social media after my posting of the recent graphics of the newly proposed green building of ISB campus at Sg Hanching. By August 2015, ISB will relocated their school to the new proposed area. The exact location is along Jalan Utama Salambigar, Kg Sg Hanching and it is pretty big, a 22-acre site.
I remember a few years ago of the rumours that ISB can be relocated as the current land belongs to the another ministry if I’m not mistaken. Now it’s a reality after a groundbreaking ceremony a few days ago officiated by two of our ministers – Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and the Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, who poured concrete cement into the foundation of the new ISB campus.
You may seen ISB’s branding as being eco-friendly and always giving back to the community and I was pleased that ISB’s new campus uses the green concept to reduce the usage of energy and water while creating a more conducive and healthier environment for the teachers, students and parents.
The whole project itself costs in the region of BND 30 million and it’s being financed by Baiduri Bank (Oh yeah, if you wanna apply for home loans, Baiduri Bank can help finance you too). The architect of the project is handled by Arkitek Rekajaya; Civil & Structural Consultants is Adwan & Associates Chartered Engineers; Mechanical & Electrical Consultant is Sepakat Setia Perunding; Earthwork Consultant also is done by Sepakat Setia Perunding; Quantity Surveyor is MRBC Partnership; Main Building Contractor is Walltique Sdn Bhd and Mechanical & Electrical Contractor is DHJ Electrical Sdn Bhd.
Both ministers were pretty impressed with the current project and they hope that more schools will adapt the concept of a greener environment even on a smaller scope.
I will see if I’m able to get more snippets during the progress of the construction over a period of time.

Times Square Shopping Centre has always been great in creating events and exposure for participating tenants. After the successful Japan Festival 2014 event, TSSC held another interactive event for the public, targeting the younger generation with the gimmick called “Armed for the Undead”.
This event has been a success since Wednesday and sadly today will be the final day. I saw a lot of interest after my posting on instagram last Wednesday. The “Armed for the Undead” event or more commonly known as the Nerf versus Zombies experience is an innovative form of entertainment that Times Square Management has organized specially for this year’s first school term break. With an entry fee of only $3, customers get to choose their “weapon” or Nerf Gun and walk their way into the zombie infested arena. Supported by The Brunei Milsims Cosplayers, customers were also given a short briefing of the rules to ensure a safe playing environment.
Today it will be open by 11am and ends at 9pm tonight. So if you haven’t try, you still have a chance to do so. The cost per entry is $3 and those under 5 years old will not be allowed. You can check out their updates on instagram @timessquarebrunei
