Geylang robbed a point

The highlights between DPMM FC and Geylang International FC

What a great run by Geylang International FC! They have beat Tampines Rovers and drew against Harimau Muda before gaining a much needed point against DPMM FC at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Their run have improved gradually and it wasn’t an easy feat to get points of DPMM FC’s home turf and Geylang International FC managed to do it.

DPMM FC were heading into this match with a 3 losing streak in the S•League and the head coach Steve Kean wanted to turn things around. However, DPMM FC had to settle for a goalless draw instead. It could have been all three points for the home side if it wasn’t for the three goal bound efforts that hit the post in the second half.

Geylang International FC keeper Siddiq Durimi was in top form to deny Roy O’Donovan and Roberto Alviz late in the first half. However, the visitors was a much better side in the first half as they dominated possession and proved more hungrier of the two sides. The home side lacked conviction and the partnership of Hendra and captain Bobby in midfield couldn’t control the midfield with ease especially when playing at their home turf.

It was definitely a forgettable first half for DPMM FC and the head coach changed the tactics after the second half, putting Alviz back in a much more central role. Tosi Rodrigo, Roy O’Donovan and Roberto Alviz came very close in breaking the deadlock after the break. It was a much better performance from DPMM FC but the result wasn’t favourable enough as this match was a much needed win for DPMM FC.

For me, the star of the night was Geylang Internatioanal FC’s Aliff Shafaein who was instrumental in his side’s attack. He had a few efforts on target and his penetrating runs made it difficult for DPMM FC to defend as he opened up gaps in their defence. He lifted Geylang’s confidence and bossed the midfield but he ran out of steam in the middle of the second half as he was substituted.

Though it wasn’t a defeat for DPMM FC, Steve Kean believes this is a change of momentum after a run of 3 defeats and this shift will be more favourable in the upcoming matches for DPMM FC. Their next game will be against Courts Young Lions this Wednesday at Jalan Besar Stadium.

Despite the draw, DPMM FC still lead the table with a one-point lead over Warriors FC and defending champions Tampines Rovers. They can extend their lead to four points if they beat Courts Young Lions this Wednesday. All the best, DPMM FC.

DPMM FC vs Geylang

Catch this match on Saturday, 14th June

Three in a row in the S•League. That wasn’t the script as planned for DPMM FC. One stage DPMM FC was 7 points ahead in the summit. Today their cushion has been cut to just one point after 3 consecutive losses in the S•League but Home United can overtake the leaderboard should they win tonight against Hougang United.

DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean is confident that DPMM FC can bounce back against Geylang International FC tomorrow night (Saturday) at Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium.

“It might 3 league losses in a row but we have a big win in between. So it’s two defeats in a row but it’s never nice. I still feel we have enough qualities. We played too deep against Tampines Rovers and it gives us something to work on and we just had some training session to get things right. I think the worrying thing is you don’t know why you lost and you don’t know why you didn’t play. This one we know we were far too deep,” shared Steve Kean.

“We will definitely pick up from our previous game and we actually have against Tampines. We know these were gonna be tough games. If we get a good game against Geylang, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be back to where we started.”

Geyland International currently sits at 8th place in the S•League and the last time DPMM FC played them at Bedok Stadium, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. So let’s hope for a victory for DPMM FC tomorrow night.

DPMM FC held at Bedok

The mascot and the umpires for the night at Bedok Stadium, Singapore

It was a step down performance from DPMM FC after failing to get back to winning ways. The first three games saw DPMM FC earning a full 9 points but only managed to collect one point from the last two games. Despite holding 2nd place in the S•League, it was still a huge improvement as compared to last season.

Before the match, the odds were against Geylang International FC and they were almost at the foot of the table. A big applause to GIFC for holding their defence till the very end as DPMM FC squandered two great chances to gain all the three points. Yuki Ichikawa scored the opening goal in the 17th minute after a Wardun failed to grab an easy catch and the Japanese import from GIFC kick the ball from close range for the shock lead.

Brunei DPMM FC redeemed themselves after a nice set-piece cross from Azwan Salleh who was in for Sairol Sahari who still nursing a knock on his knee from the previous game. Rodrigo Tosi scored from an Azwan delivery free kick to make it 1-1 in the 21st minute. Tosi was disappointed with himself as he had another chance after Azwan Ali had a perfect cross down the left wing but Tosi misconnect the shot which was a goal opportunity.

The first half ended with both sides not creating enough chances but more of challenging high balls in midfield. Roy O’Donovan who was on a cast after a minor surgery on his thumb, was involved but failed to muster a shot in the first half.

The second half was a slightly better affair with a few counter attack moments. However, both sides couldn’t find the net and I also just realised how the pitch was uneven and bumpy as well which made it slightly tricky to play on. Tosi was gifted another chance in the 49th minute after a counter attack and one of the best run of play from DPMM FC but Tosi’s shot ended wide to the delight of the GIFC keeper.

Azwan Ali also had a great chance but his final choice of continuing to dribble instead of taking a shot in the box proved costly. It was already a great play by Roberto who fed Ali with a perfect through pass but Ali had a touch too many in the box and allowed GIFC to close him down in the 53rd minute.

GIFC had chances too in the second half. Hafiz Nor had a driving shot but wide of the post in the 57th minute. Hafiz could have bettered himself in the 71st minute after GIFC’s Ridhuan Muhammad bursted down the right wing and crossed to the unmarked Hafiz but he lost control of the ball and Wardun intercepted the ball to safety.

As the game was heading for a draw, O’Donovan could have sealed all three points as it was the best chance of the whole 90 mins. He only had the keeper to beat but his directed shot from close range was easily read by Joey Sim who had a commanding presence in goal. O’Donovan could have opted to pass the ball to Shahrazen who was also opened but it wasn’t to be DPMM FC’s night. The miss proved costly and both side shared the spoils.

Now DPMM FC have to focus on their next two games at home (6th April and 11th April) and let’s hope they gain full maximum six points to get back to winning ways.

Shahrazen had some play time but couldn’t muster a goal attempt. With a few more match time, he will definitely get back to shape.

The miss that could have made the difference. His effort went straight to the keeper on a one on one situation in injury time. It could have been the winning shot.
