BIBD recently held an annual dinner to appreciate and acknowledge all the hard work and contribution of the BIBD family in the past year. These efforts have culminated into milestones and achievements, earmarked by Standard & Poor’s A- rating, its first ever Riba Symposium, chairmanship of the CAIBA (China-ASEAN Interbank Association), and the BIBD Headquarters re-launching. In 2015, the bank also managed to retain its international recognitions such as the Best Retail Bank in Brunei for the third year running (The Asian Banker), and the Best Bank in Brunei (Global Finance).

The event also saw the personal recognition of several bright BIBD talents as they have also contributed as ambassadors of BIBD and Brunei Darussalam. Dayangku Noruldiana Shim binti Pengiran Hj Hashim was commended for being conferred the Highest Achiever Award in the Islamic Financial Planner category in Kuala Lumpur. Also highlighted was Hjh Nurul Akmalina binti Hj Yahya’s recent achievement in the national finals of the Musabaqah Membaca Al-Quran competition.

The event started with a recitation of the Doa, which was then followed by welcoming remarks by BIBD Managing Director, Mr Mubashar Khokhar, where he shared significant milestones for the Bank, which included the fourth consecutive win in 2016’s Best Retail bank from The Asian Banker. “Alhamdulilah, all our efforts thus far have placed us on a solid foundation, prepared for the challenges and eager for the opportunities ahead”, said Mr Mubashar. He added that BIBD’s continued growth also increases its commitment to supporting Bruneian businesses through comprehensive banking solutions such as the BIBD SME 360, aligning the Bank closer towards His Majesty’s vision in developing a dynamic and sustainable economy.

The programme, now in its third year with more than a hundred students, aims to Prepared by Corporate Communications, BIBD PRESS RELEASE MDO/PR/2015/016 bring more educational opportunities to underprivileged children, aligning BIBD further with another element of His Majesty’s vision, to develop well-educated and highly-skilled Bruneians.

Mr. Mubashar summed up his remarks with encouragement and inspiration for all BIBD staff to continue working together and delivering world-class banking products and services. “Ultimately, it is up to our unified efforts to ensure that BIBD cements its position as The First Choice for all our employees, customers and stakeholders”, concluded Mr. Mubashar. This was followed by presentations for Long Service Awards to employees.

Louis Loo Kee Lee (left), founder of Plus+ Magazine and Kristy Lim (5th from left), founder of Piccolo Café with representatives from Jerudong Park Medical Centre and staff from Piccolo Café during the Save Life by Giving Blood campaign at Piccolo Café last week.

Late post. It was the fourth time that I have donated blood for a good cause. This was part of the Plus+ Magazine drive collaborating with Piccolo Café and Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC). There were a total of 36 donors though there were many that had to be rejected due to low blood pressure, cholesterol and low haemoglobin levels. Though I have to say kudos for their thoughts and efforts to show up at Piccolo Café to donate.

The event began at 10am and ended at 4pm. Kristy Lim, owner of Piccolo Café was quite overwhelmed with the responses from the public and it was also the first time such event was held at her establishment.

During the blood donation drive, donors were treated to light refreshments courtesy of Piccolo café.

They were also given three complimentary issues of Plus+ magazine as well as special goodies from JPMC. Perhaps another one next year, Kristy? 😀

By the way, Piccolo Café are treating their customers a free additional shot of espresso for all coffee beverages from today until 10 May! Such good news for those who love their extra shot in their cuppa.

HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah during the Istiadat Menghantar Tanda Diraja dan Pertunangan Diraja ceremony for His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik who was engaged to Dk Raabi’atul Adawiyyah Pg Hj Bolkiah yesterday

HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah upon arrival at the Royal Engagement

The Royal Engagement reported from The Brunei Times. His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik is officially engaged to Dk Raabi’atul Adawiyah Pg Hj Bolkiah after she accepted the pre-engagement gifts presented to her family’s representative during the Majlis Istiadat Menghantar Tanda Diraja and Pertunangan Diraja.

The royal engagement ceremony took place on the third day of the royal wedding festivities at Istana Nurul Iman, which was attended by HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah, head of the ceremony.

The Tanda Diraja ceremony, steeped in royal customs, saw an underaged girl dressed like a bride in red, who was led into the Royal Banquet Hall by a royal court official.

Meanwhile, the Pertunangan Diraja, which is held in tandem with the Tanda Diraja, included an underaged boy and girl dressed like a groom and a bride in yellow led into the Royal Banquet Hall together with gift-bearers.

Gifts for the bride-to-be included a complete set of clothing, a pair of bangles and earstuds, pairs of shoes, a strand of necklace, and a silver vessel used to store four betel nut silver boxes named kaskol langguai.

Other gifts were a letter, surat mahar, describing the groom’s agreement to marry the bride and a list of all the gifts. The mahar or dowry was worth $1,000.

The gift-bearers were accompanied by 16 underaged Awang-awang carrying royal ceremonial candles called the dian enam belas.
Also part of the delegation was a group of 40 male youth walking in pairs and carrying royal regalia items including the sinipit (spear), pedang (sword), perisai (shield) and tombak (shield embellished with gold and silver bands).

The gifts and three underaged children were then brought to Baitur Rahmah, where the bride-to-be’s family representative waited to accept them.

Pehin Manteri Bini Hjh Aminah and Pehin Jawatan Bini Hjh Siti were responsible for inspecting the gifts.

While YB Pehin Dato Hj Yaakub waited outside with the 16 Awang-Awang carrying the 16 royal ceremonial candles, 16 Dayang-dayang entered Balai Singgahsana Indera Kenchana carrying the same royal regalia.

Another group of Dayang-Dayang also entered the balai to exchange a set of gangsa (brass receptacle), signifying that the bride-to-be has accepted the gifts and is now officially engaged to the groom-to-be.

A healthier lifestyle

Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah the Royal Patron for International School Brunie’s Borneo Global Issues Conference with the deputy ministers from Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Education, the management, the Executive Principal of ISB, the Secretaries-General for BGIC and representatives from the local participating schools of BGIC 2015

After two years of hiatus, the ISB’s Borneo Global Issues Conference is back but sadly there were no international school involved as compared to previous years. Nonetheless this will give more opportunities for the local students to be involved with the current issues facing around the world.

the 11th Borneo Global Issues Conference (BGIC) at the International Convenction Centre (ICC) was graced by Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah the Royal Patron for BGIC. The theme for this year is to “Combat World Diseases” and Her Royal Highness urged our Brunei youth to take a healthier lifestyle and hopefully it will reduce the demands on the healthcare system. Her Royal Highness also stated how information has become more accessible to the youth through internet for them to learn of diseases such as Avian Influenza, HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Tuberculosis and the newly known Ebola.

Her Royal Highness presented a mock cheque on behalf of ISB to the JUMP! Foundation, a non-profit youth empowerment organization and it was received by Tara Yip-Bannicq of UNICEF Haiti and the JUMP! Foundation.

The event ran for four days and today is the final day of BGIC. The only surprise was the non appearance from the Ministry of Health as this theme relates to health.

 Zakat contribution

BIBD today handed over two mock cheques to the Islamic Religious Council of Brunei for the purpose of Zakat contributions for BIBD and its customers. The event took place at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Office in Jalan Menteri Besar, Berakas.

BIBD’s Zakat contribution for 2013 amounted to B$ 2,355,519.40, whilst Zakat contributions from the customers of BIBD for the period of 2013-2014 amounted to B$ 241,816.24.
The mock cheques for the contributions were handed over by the Chairman of Shariah Advisory Body for BIBD and its subsidiaries, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin to Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Religious Affairs on behalf of MUIB (Islamic Religious Council of Brunei).

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof, Deputy Chairman of the BIBD Shariah Advisory Body along with BIBD Managing Director, Yang Mulia Javed Ahmad.

Handover of donations to Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin to Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Religious Affairs on behalf of MUIB (Islamic Religious Council of Brunei)

The concept of Zakat is to donate a portion of one’s wealth to the eligibility group of people named as asnaf Zakat mentioned in the Holy Book of Al- Quran in Surah At-Taubah: Verse 60. The act is considered highly honorable as Zakat is not only to cleanse one’s wealth but also provides spiritual purification, drawing Muslims closer to Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala.

The significance for Zakat in society is that to eradicate the poverty via an approved methodology in providing and managing the society’s economy and finance. Zakat is the 3rd pillar of Islam, making it is compulsory on Muslims, provided they meet the conditions which are the required nisaab (the minimum amount of wealth i.e 85 gram of gold or their equivalent in cash that one must have before Zakat is payable) and haul (the possession of assets for the whole hijrah year).

In order to help its muslim customers meet this religious obligation, BIBD strongly urges its customers to utilize their branches to pay their Zakat at its many counters at its many strategic locations in Brunei Darussalam. Press release and image courtesy of BIBD.

Rugby gets exposure

His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Muntaqim was involved in the program as he learned new skills and knowledge on rugby
This is what we need in Brunei. To have trial and error for sports that are not as well known in Brunei such as rugby to begin with. We are too familiar with football for the past decades. Rugby has been given much limelight and perhaps the level of knowledge and interest hasn’t garnered pace as much as football. Even on astro and TV, we are more exposed to football and furthermore, football icons such as Ronaldo and Messi to name a few.

This initiative of Get Into Rugby programme is a great idea with the motto – Try • Play • Stay – and it is organised by BRFU (Brunei Rugby Football Union) and Astera Consultant with the help of the Ministry of Education under the Co-Curricular Education (CCE) Department where they have helped in getting students from different districts to get involved in the trial program.

The union is receiving support from Baiduri Bank, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Insurance Islam TAIB, DHL, RainFresh., Ideal Cafe, KFC and The Brunei Times to improve the popularity of the game in the country.

I can’t believe the weather was too hot this morning and I salute all the kids for braving the sun this morning. Kudos to the BRFU and the organiser for making this possible. I hope other sports will follow as well and who knows we can find talents at a very young age.
