Music to my ears
The event that took place last Friday evening at Sejahtera Hall, Royal Brunei Recreation Club

What I am amazed are the talents we have in Brunei Darussalam. I can’t stress this enough. Maybe this should be even highlighted in the LegCo to see how far our talents can go. Earlier in the year, I attended a broadway play “Othello” performed by students from Pusat Tingkatan Enam (PTE) Meragang and I was quite impressed with their talents. Last Friday, I witnessed another aspect of their talent – music – and I was surely entertained from beginning to the end. My only minor issue were the noisy youths in front of us whom I wished could have respected the performers and audience alike.
The Performing Arts Club in PTE Meragang has active in showcasing their talents around for 5 years and hence it was fitting that for the club to organize the 5th Poetry and Music Recital entitled “Chances”.
PG Hjh Maimunah bte Pg Hj Osman, Principal of Meragang Sixth Form Centre, was very happy with the efforts put in by the students and teachers involved in the project. She believed that this project won’t be possible without everyone’s effort and it was definitely not an easy task. She also thanked the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports for their advice. The guest of honour was Yang Mulia Hj Abd Rahim bin Derus, Director-General of Education, Ministry of Education.
It wasn’t also a music showcase but also some poetries to the delight of the audience. Perhaps the students can also engage with @theartofwrite (IG) where they are looking for writers to share their loves for people, words, art and earth.
Kudos to the working committee, volunteers and most of all, the vocalists and the musicians. It was a well spent Friday evening. We need more avenues like this for Brunei. The event is supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

Music to my ears. Yes, it was another musical moment for me as I experienced the wonderful talents from Jerudong International Students in last weekend’s JIS Showcase 2016 at the Art Centre of JIS. It’s been a tradition that I catch the JIS Showcase (musical performance) every year if I happen to be in the country. It’s not surprised that the standard of the performance is on par with other regional performances.
Every single detail and thought have been invested in the JIS Showcase 2016. What I truly admire is the high professionalism taken into the performance which made the overall performance seemed flawless. I also love the transitions between songs and performances as they didn’t waste any seconds to carry the momentum from start to finish. I could tell how important JIS values music and art in their school and last weekend’s performances were a great indicator for their progress for music excellence.
It’s great to see Barnaby Sandow, principal of JIS, to continue the mission in music and art excellence. It sets the benchmark in terms of music education and I myself feel proud of where JIS is right now – not just excelling in studies but also in arts and music. Sandow shared that the Showcase 2016 is a celebration of artistic creativity. It was a pleasure to have met you as well last weekend.
There were many favourites performers that caught my attention. Willam Brien’s “Born in the USA”, “Strong” by Eden Chiam, Evan Chiam, Krish Punjabi and Nayumi Reduan, “Rude” by Jay Baek and Christian Osharode, “Beautiful” by Aziz Harun, “Say Something” Shana Holmes and William Brien and “I Dreamed a Dream” by Yasmin Riches were just some of the performances that blew me away. I also want to commend on the orchestra, the dancers, the choir and the cute Jerudong singers to make the overall performance wholesome.
JIS have raised the bar each year on their Showcase and I look forward to future ones. Well done to all of you and good job on Paul Edgeler, the producer and music director of JIS Showcase 2016. You can follow @JISbrunei on IG for updates.

Mr Barnaby Sandow, JIS Principal said “It is wonderful to be able to have the opportunity to welcome our overseas guests to Brunei Darussalam and JIS – to be able to show them what a special place this is and what a fantastic school JIS is. “
I attended the afternoon session yesterday and I was quite impressed with the young talents and I know they can teach me a lesson or two on the court despite their small figures. I do hope one day that Brunei will have a youth academy system in place to groom the tennis enthusiasts at a very young age. I believe we have the talent but it has to start from an early age to unlock the potential.

Datin Paduka Hjh Adina with Pehin Onn Siew Siong and the management of The Escape Experience last Sunday
The Escape Experience, Brunei’s first fully fledged “escape the room” game, was officially opened during a small opening ceremony on last Sunday.
The guest of honour was Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman, the former Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to officiate the opening with Pehin Onn Siew Siong, the President of the Kuala Belait Chinese Chamber of Commerce. After the ceremony, Datin Paduka Hjh Adina and her family had the opportunity to experience some of the rooms, led by one of the partners from The Escape Experience, On Hung Zheng.
The whole concept of the The Escape Experience” is unique adventure based games where players are locked into a room with objects, having to search for clues and solve puzzles against the clock.
There are five uniquely themed rooms at the Escape Experience, such as the Doraemon and Super Mario rooms, which is fun for adults and children while The Prison Break room is said to be thrilling with an intense atmosphere. The Escape Experience hopes to add more themes in the future with a rotating schedule to keep things fresh and keep players on their toes.
Each room can accommodate up to 6 players, but teams of 4-5 are recommended for each room, and children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The experience is not just for families and friends, but can also be tailored for corporate events and team building activities.
They are open 7 days a week, with the first game slot at 1pm, except on Fridays, and are open until late. Booking for time slots is recommended, but walk-ins are welcomed. Prices start at $17 at off-peak times, with a $1 discount for customers who like their Facebook Page.
The Escape Experience is located at Unit F3 of the Setia Kenangan Two building behind Regent Square in Kampung Kiulap. Customers can WhatsApp +6738287778 to book slots or make enquiries.
Two weeks ago, we attempted the Prison Break and it took us more than an hour :p
Sisters Winnie and Elva needed to be rescued
How did we go in Prison Break? It could have been better.
Next up was Mario. We had a good run with team mates – Winnie, Alex and Rachel
The clues are pretty tricky. You will need to think outside the box but rewarding once you unlocked the clues.
We did better in Mario than Prison Break *lol*

There are no words to conveniently describe or do justice to the fabulous Showcase Concert at Jerudong International School (JIS) last weekend.
Held in the institution’s auditorium, the room reverberated with endless applause as philharmonic attendees enjoyed the spectacle performed by students and directed by Paul Edgeler and which covered a wide spectrum of popular music styles.
From lush, richly orchestrated Broadway numbers and beautiful acoustic ballads to catchy jazz standards and unapologetically loud, high-energy dance numbers, this year’s concert catered to everyone’s taste.
The audience was further enthralled by a gripping performance by violinist Shian Li Esther Chiam, who won the Junior World Champion Instrumentalist award for Brunei in the World Championships of Performing Arts in 2014.
Her solo performance of Smooth Criminal, accompanied by the orchestra, was simply dazzling.
Smiles further widened as JIS Year 11 pupil Aziz Harun took to the stage to perform Senyum, which was written and produced by Faizal Tahir and Mike Chan and received over 900,000 views on YouTube (amazing).
The concert was divided into two parts – the morning session for invited schools and members of Pusat Ehsan, while the nighttime performance was for guests who purchased tickets. Text by Ikhwan Salleh of The Brunei Times and images provided by Lily Chiam unless stated.

JIS Design & Technology’s Design Competition
Click banner to find out more
This is a great initiative by the Jerudong International School (JIS Design & Technology Faculty) where they have collaborated with ICON DESIGN Store and BHC Magazine to create a competition based to inspire their creativity at a very young age. We should have more of this opportunities for that particular age group because kids’ mind are so raw and unfiltered that they tend to be more creative than the adults in some aspects. They probably can visualize what we failed to capture.
Now there are two categories that you can enter and this is open to students studying in Brunei from ages 5 to 18 years old and you can fill in the form here. The submission of the design briefs will be on the 8th March 2015.
Do check below for the two categories that for the competition. The first category is simple – to create a public seating space (indoor/outdoor) and the second category is more of a product to compliment the range of designer pieces available at ICON DESIGN store.
For the first entry/category. students must use A3 paper where all the ideas and modeling of concept will be shown on the paper. This is include your sketching of ideas from the start which is more like a brainstorming session. Then chose an idea that you feel hits the mark for you and create a mock up design of the idea. Don’t forget to include a rough dimensions too.
This competition will definitely spur more creativity from the students and I’m looking forward for their ideas and concepts. The deadline once again is on Friday 6th March for the first phase.

I visited Flapjack House last year but never really got to their dishes. Two weeks ago, I had a mini feast with Winnie Sia, trying out a variety of dishes that Flapjack House offers. The one that caught my taste bud is the Black Pepper Chicken. It’s one of the newest dish and I highly recommend you to order that.
The cafe also serves breakfast and it starts from 7am and business closes at 10pm daily. So do try out the dishes they offer for breakfast. They offer “Crepe Kahwin” with kaya and peanut butter to localise the taste. Their pancakes are home made too.
Flapjack is managed by Eugene Seah who had the idea in opening a cafe after his experience in Australia.
So where is Flapjack house located? It’s located behind The Arch Taurean and you can call 245 0987 for reservation. You can follow them on social media – Flapjack House Facebook page or @flapjackhouse on instagram

Press release from Jerudong International School. At Jerudong International School (JIS), there are two programmes offered to Sixth form students; the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (A-Levels) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). Students in the A Level programme will either study three or four A-levels, plus Core Studies and PE. However students in the IB programme will study six subjects: three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. They must choose one subject from each of Groups 1-5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from Group 6, or the student may choose another subject from Groups 2, 3, or 4 (an elective).
One of the assessments for Group 4 is an internal assessment where practical work is carried out and recorded by the students. The Group 4 project is an integrated, collaborative task where students work with other students from different sciences. Below, Joseph Sleiman, a Year 12 IB Student at JIS describes what they recently did for this year’s Group 4 project.
“The International Baccalaureate (IB) Group 4 Project……..a collaborative activity where students work together on a scientific or technological topic……..’to encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method’……yeah, yeah, yeah…….that’s what the theory says, but, what did WE do here at Jerudong International School (JIS) in our Group 4 Project???
JIS Year 12 International Baccalaureate students on their Group 4 project
JIS Year 12 International Baccalaureate students on their Group 4 project
At the beginning of Term Two, all the Year Twelve IB students were sorted into four different groups, some ending up with friends and others with people they have never worked with in their life. In the first meeting, we were introduced to the project – produce an experiment that will measure a time period of between two and ten minutes accurately! (No watches allowed!!!). We were also informed that there would be a prize for the most accurate timing – my competitive nature kicked into gear! The teams then discussed, brainstormed, and shared ideas. Creativity was everywhere! Teachers also contributed opinions and encouraged ideas that could be translated into real life.
The following two weeks were the ‘Action Stage’. Two sessions, each four hours long, to trial, test and refine our method(s) – as well as lots of informal chatting at break times and in the evenings. This part was where communication and patience was tested. Things would go wrong, timings made would be totally off, equipment would break and whole methods would be scrapped for better ones. Though problematic and stressful at times, all of us had fun working together on presenting and preparing the experiment.
The final ‘Evaluation Stage’ was soon upon us and each team was ready and very ambitious, everyone’s eyes set on the prize! All the students were visibly anxious, rushing to complete one last test trial and finish off Display boards to present our completed product. Once the trivialities were concluded, the teachers began the countdown… and Carl Orff’s “O Fortuna” blared through the speakers – an appropriately dramatic piece for the occasion. The tension in the atmosphere had peaked and ‘feisty’ remarks were exchanged between groups as the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Piper, collected the calculated times. In his characteristic bantering, he stretched out the suspense to its limit and after what felt like decades, revealed the JOINT winners: both recording the exact time of the piece! However, amazingly, the other two times were within two seconds of the actual time! The prizes were handed out and we all left the classroom reflecting on an enjoyable educational experience with teamwork and collaboration at the forefront of it all.
The main emphasis we take away as students is the importance of cooperation and the procedure of creating a scientific investigation – not necessarily the results/success of the experiment. And best of all we enjoyed the experience; it gave us a fun way to appreciate the wonders of scientific method!”

It’s super big in Malaysia and now it’s made available in Brunei Darussalam. In Malaysia, there are almost 580 restaurants listed in Food Panda which is a mobile app and web-based for food ordering and delivery service provider. Now it’s good to see such a reputable company such as Food Panda to be in Brunei and it’s slowly making waves as the online orders are increasing day by day.
So far, Food Panda has partnered with 20 restaurants such as Ximply Chriz, Kitaro Japanese, Swensen’s, KFC and Burger King to name a few in Brunei. Last week, I conducted a special free voucher for my instagram followers to increase the awareness of Food Panda existence in Brunei and it worked. People were ordering and there was a huge spike in terms of orders from Food Panda and Burger King was the popular order among the lot.
Recently Claudio Abitante, the Managing Director of Foodpanda Brunei, was in the country to meet up with potential restaurants to be listed in Food panda. He believes that Food Panda will be as popular as in Malaysia because Bruneians love to eat.
For the moment, the delivery service is currently limited to residents of Brunei-Muara and hopefully it will extend to other districts after they finalized with the logistics. I have to say it’s not that easy especially for logistic purposes and currently, FoodPanda is utilizing TNT Brunei in providing the delivery service.

Last year, there were three representatives. This year, Brunei are sending 9 participants and this shows that Bruneians have what it takes with their talents. Yesterday nine of them took off for the United States to represent Brunei in the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA). In other words, it’s the official “Talent Olympics” and it’s a good avenue to aspire more talents. This is a great opportunity for the participants to be exposed to the real competition and also compete against other performers around the world.
Last year, Fakhrul Razi made to the finals of WCOPA 2013 and bagged a few gold medals while Kevin Lo earned scholarships from the acting academy and notching a few gold medals whereas Maria Grace Koh earned silver medals from last year’s awards. The only one returning back to Hollywood is Maria while the rest are new to the competition.
Jeffrey Cadayong of Prismworks Event Management is confident that Brunei will bring in more medals and also earn more gold medals. The Brunei candidates have been working very hard and they had their final rehearsal at Expression Music before taking off for their adventure to Hollywood. I saw bits of pieces of Ruby Chong’s performance and I was super amazed already by this lady talent and I have seen her sing in public events.
Both sisters Eden Chiam and Shian Li Chiam are also selected for the USA trip who will performing vocal and instrument respectively in the junior category. They are the youngest of the lot. Elizabeth Sim and Joanna Kwan will be representing Brunei in the senior acting category. As for the senior vocal category, former champion of P2F Hidayat Hj Ahim, Ruby Chong, Bridget Ang and Md Adi Farhan will represent the country.
Will any of them reach the finals of the WCOPA like Fakhrul Razi did? I do have faith in them and they will make more waves this time round. Last year, Brunei won the “Spirit Award” and also the winning viral photo which happened to be my photo on social media.
Good luck to all the participants and do keep us posted. Too bad this year I won’t be joining them to the States. Maybe next year when the time is right. Do follow their updates on instagram @officialwcopabrunei

Last year was the bomb!! So was this year’s Jerudong International School Showcase Concert. They had three shows, the first being performed internally for the students and teachers of JIS while the remaining two shows were opened to public.
I like this year’s theme which was “Movies and Musicals”. According to Principal Andrew Fowler-Watt, he expressed that how music influences us and by listening together we connect, no matter our nationality or culture.
Overall, I was super impressed with the quality from the vocals to the performers to the the musicians and let’s not forget the sound technicians and those people back stage and mostly the music coordinator who set the pace from start to finish. Sophia and I really had a great time and I can’t wait for next year’s edition.

Ruby Chong has such great vocal. I love her performance for “You Exist in my Song” written by Wanting Qu, a songwriter based in Vancoucer, Canada
Another performer that brought to an eruption of applause was Shian Li who belted out “Winter – 1st Movement”
When it comes to music and performance, you need great energy and both Hanny Yussof and Bazilah Ali were magnificent from the beginning when they sang a popular song by Najwa Latif entitled “Sahabat”
