It’s all about learning

Pooja (2nd from left) and Rahul (3rd from left) just recently joined as members of Brunei Speakers’ Club and they did their ice breaker speech. They were with their speech evaluators Ong Yin and Chris Woo who both work in the education sector. Click image to read the blog entry.

Ever since I rejoined the Brunei Speakers’ Club back in July 2014, it has been an interesting journey and I’m really grateful that I am able to learn and let down my ego that there is still plenty room for growth in me as an individual. One thing I truly learnt is contribution and that has made me very committed in helping the club in any possible means. This is the platform that instills its vision on improving leadership skills and personal growth.

This won’t be possible with the energetic members and friends that have been supporting toastmasters. It has redefined the person I am and also cemented my true core values as an individual. I am here to contribute and I am here to learn.

You can click for our latest toastmasters meeting recap from Brunei Speakers’ Club and nicely written, Supatra, another dedicated toastmaster. It’s good that we have a blog entry weekly to keep up to date with the members and also for the benefit of the public on what we truly learn in toastmasters and it’s not just about public speaking.

Do join our weekly meeting every Tuesday at 7:30pm at Seameo Voctech and I will presenting my fifth speech as part of my toastmasters manual (competent communicator) as I’m rushing for the Toastmasters International Speech competition. I have to complete my sixth speech in order to qualify. Wish me luck 😀

The management and associates of Concepts Computer with Richard Soo, from Acer Miri, at the launch of the Concepts Computer Supplier vans yesterday

Concepts Computer has been around 14 years and they still continue their branding presence in the Sultanate. Soon they will be celebrating their 15th year anniversary. They have been expanding their services from hardware (introducing top of the line Acer products) to software (tying up with Microsoft Brunei and Mars Enterprise) to after sales service to their newly introduced service – logistics (with their newly launched vehicles, two Nissan vans with Concepts Computer design).

This is just in time before the lunar year and Concepts Computer continue their presence with their brand awareness through advertising with their commercial vehicles. This is to stay ahead of the game and Concepts Computer is definitely the biggest IT retailer in Brunei, a vision by Vincent Pao, General Manager of Concepts Computer that has become reality.

With the new vehicles, the company can provide better and faster delivery of goods from their stores to their customers. This will create more confidence to the customers that Concepts Computer can provide the best service.

Also present during the launch of the newly purchased vehicles were Alice Chan of Concepts Computer, Richard Soo, Acer Area Manager of Miri, Zul Abdul Rahman, Marketing Executive of Concepts Computer and the associates of Concepts Computer.

What HAG can do for you?

Henrik Meltesen, the regional sales manager of Scandinavian Business Seating Asia Pte Ltd from Singapore (left) with the team from Catalyst and Sejalin Enterprises Sdn Bhd during the press conference for HAG brand chairs

Who would have thought that all chairs served a general function and that is only to sit? Well, I just learnt some thing refreshing yesterday at Catalyst office. The way we sit does make a difference to our body posture and it brings a different level of energy and comfort without you realizing it. I have an office chair in the comfort of my work station and I just take for granted that any office chair that has great cushioning with arm rest and wheels is simply good enough for me to do my work on my desk. In comes a Scandinavian who educated me on how sitting can make use more efficient, inspiring and creative without compromising comfort and stability.

Henrik Meltesen, the regional sales manager of Scandinavian Business Seating Asia Pte Ltd from Singapore, is in the Sultanate to brief the local media on their line of office chairs from HAG. The press conference was organised by Inspire Living Magazine and also present was the distributor for HAG brand, Sejalin Enterprises Sdn Bhd.

The chair that caught my eye was the HAG Capisco line. The overall look feels as if there isn’t much material or surface area to support my body or weight but once you sit on it, you won’t feel any form of discomfort and Capisco allows you to sit in an appropriate manner without you having to think too much. It’s like the chair has a mind of its own. This line is actually the best selling product and I was surprised to know that it has existed since 1984. Interesting…

The HAG Capisco line reminds me of sitting on a saddle (on a horse). The idea of this concept is to allow an open hip angle when you sit down in a position as if you are half standing, half sitting if the chair is lifted in a higher position. It’s like sitting on a stool but in a more relaxed, comfortable stance. I tested the chair yesterday and while sitting down, listening to Henrik’s presentation, I didn’t feel anything was lacking even though the chair looked really simplified than a normal office chair. The open hip stance allow the spine to naturally create that S-shape curve and the leg area will have less pressure to support your lower back which is good for blood circulation especially when you are sitting.

You see, even chairs have a lot of talking points and thanks to the presentation by Henrik, I’m beginning to be aware on how I’ve been sitting all these years.

If you wish to purchase or have a look on these chairs, I suggest you drop by Catalyst Office at Jalan Muara (one simpang after Gongcha Serusop) at Simpang 94. You can reach them at 223 3630 and you can have your chairs customized as well to your preference. They have many types of HAG chairs and who know I might get one myself in a long run. You can also go direct to Sejalin Enterprises at Muluat Industrail area or call 279 0376.

Abd Latif bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof, a member from Board of Directors of Jerudong Park Medical Centre. Also present were Dato Dr Isham Jaafar, the Executive and Medical Director of JPMC, Vivian Suk Kee Tie, Physiotherapist and Head of Rehabilitation Department of JPMC and Dr. Burc Bassa, Deputy Head and Head Consultant of the Brunei Neuroscience Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC)

Last year, the Rehabilitation Department of Jerudong Park Medical Centre organised a 5 week programme for stroke and cancer patients in conjunction with Hari Raya last year. The programme allowed them to improve their physical beings and also kept them inspired and motivated that their body movements and coordinations can still function through proper therapy.

Last weekend, the Rehabilitation Department organised another activity for the stroke patients of JPMC where they sang and perform short skits to the delight of the guests who attended the event at JPMC. This is a great way to contribute back to the community and also giving the patients a sense of hope and community among themselves. This time there are more stroke patients that took part in singing and performing and these have given them more joy and fun in their life even after suffering from stroke.

Looking for the video presentation, I have to applaud the wonders of the therapists from the Rehabilitation Department – Hasleezan binti Arifin (physiotherapist), Mohd Asri bin Mohd Shah (Occupational therapist), Prasanna Venkataraman (Speech and language therapist) and Abdul Samadh Shabeer (Speech and language therapist) who is also the therapeutic group activity coordinator.

Vivian Suk Kee Tie, the Head of Rehabilitation Department of JPMC, gave an inspiring account of the stroke patients of JPMC and how such programmes have made a difference in their lives and they will continue to do more programmes to better the lives of their patients physically, mentally and emotionally. It was also nice to see the department also welcomed a patient from JPMC Gleneagles, Mumtazali Muhd Abd Aziz, who is the first left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implant patient in Brunei Darussalam. He was very curious of the development of the program, requested to be part of the program and he has been loving it ever since he joined the program.

The guest of honour of the event was Abd Latif bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof, a member from Board of Directors of Jerudong Park Medical Centre. Also present were Dato Dr Isham Jaafar, the Executive and Medical Director of JPMC, Dr. Burc Bassa, Deputy Head and Head Consultant of the Brunei Neuroscience Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC), JPMC and Vivian Suk Kee Tie, Physiotherapist and Head of Rehabilitation Department of JPMC.

After the event, certificates of participation were given to the stroke patients by the guest of honour. Keep it up, JPMC!! It’s always nice to have a heart warming activity especially from a hospital.

Sponsorship for Sanjok

Sanjok Moktan with the management of Olive Tree Company and Sanjok’s friend Edwin Liew (far right)

Pizza Hut Brunei inked a sponsorship contract for Professional golfer, Sanjok Moktan on 10th December 2014 for his 2015 ASEAN PGA tour with a “commitment to help an individual relishing his dream.”

Sanjok Moktan grew up in Brunei, and started the sport of golf at 16 after being inspired by his father. Following his passion, he decided to pursue a professional license in 2010 under the “Professional Golfers Association of the Philippines” (PGAP). Costly tournaments have limited him to only 6 ASEAN PGA appearances within the last 3 years, limiting his advancement to ASIAN PGA tournaments.

His notable talent and ambition had caught the attention of Pizza Hut Brunei, and Mr Johnny Liew, Managing Director of Olive Tree Corporation decided to sponsor Moktan. Liew has a further vision to grow the local sports scene in the community.

In their part to giving back to the community and contribute to that vision, Pizza Hut Brunei and Moktan plan to host golf clinics for the youth.

“I played a lot of sports and took an instant liking to golf; it was like an instinctive call from my competitive side. Golf taught me more about myself, made me more aware of my mental state. With gold it’s more of a mental game. When you’re hitting a shot, it’s not like any other sport. Golf is an individual competition, you can do it for yourself.

Moktan is looking forward to participating in the upcoming ASEAN PGA tournaments such as the Sabah Master in Kota Kinabalu, PGM – ASEAN PGA in Port Dickson, Borobodur Classic Presented by Jababeka & OB Golf in Indonesia.

Marriage cards

Brunei will introduce marriage cards for Muslim couples as part of its new e-Syariah Court Management System.

Hj Hassan Hj Metali, Acting Chief Registrar at the Syariah Appeal Court, yesterday said a pair of marriage cards will be issued to every newlywed couple once the e-Syariah Court Management System is up and running in the next two years.

The cards will be the same size as identification cards, enabling Muslim couples to carry their proof of marriage with greater convenience.

“With the marriage cards, couples can easily show their proof of wedlock when needed. For example, if there is an inspection or ambush carried out by law enforcement, marriage cards will be accepted to prove the couple is married,” explained Hj Hassan.

Under the newly-enforced Syariah Penal Code Order, unmarried couples face heavy penalties for crimes such as khalwat.

Unmarried Muslim couples who live together or are caught in close proximity will be fined as much as $4,000, handed a jail term of up to a year or both under Section 196. Any non-Muslim involved in khalwat with a Muslim will also face the same punishment.
The Brunei Government and local IT firm ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd yesterday signed a six-year contract worth $1.75 million for the implementation and maintenance of the e-Syariah Court Management System. To read more, you can click here. Soure: Rabiatul Kamit of The Brunei Times.

A sample of a marriage card from Malaysia if I’m not mistaken

Though this initiative is favourable by the Syariah Appeal Court, my suggestion would be to integrate the data into one smart card where the information of the person can be stored in current so called Smart Card Identity Card.

The enforcers will have a device that can simply scan the Smart ID card and all the information even on marriage and his or her spouse picture will appear.

We already have a similar card for Driving Licence and now a marriage card, on top of the must have Identity Card. Who knows one day in the future that all government agencies can work together to make our wallets more room for other essential stuffs 😀

Sh’Mo’ Down

Six men showed off their sleek facial hair at the Sh’Mo’ Down, the first ever moustache competition marking the end of Movember last Sunday.

Event organiser Mas Mohammad Zulfadhly Haji Osman said Movember is celebrated around the world in November to raise awareness about men’s health issues especially prostate and testicular cancer which are rarely discussed in public.

Contestants were required to pledge growing their facial hair for the whole month of November to join the competition.

They were also encouraged to post up photos of their progress with #movemberbn on social media.

Fyad Ali was crowned champion based on the style and features of his moustache and received grooming products from Chaps & Rebels Barbershop.

“Cleanliness and extra supplement for the body is essential,” said Chaps & Rebels Barbershop owner Bung Jae, adding he fully supports the cause to shed more light on the lack of education on men’s health.

Customised T-shirts were also on sale at the event at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, The Mall. Forty per cent of the profit from the sale will go to the movember.com fund. Text courtesy of Norliha Din of The Brunei Times.

An interesting lawsuit

Click image to read more about the case

This is one interesting case that I’ve been following for the past months because of the magnitude of the lawsuit and the involvement of the Indian community in Brunei Darussalam. Recently the Indian Chamber of Commerce lost an appeal by the Court of Appeal. It was regards to the libel action filed by businessmen Ramesh Jiwatram Bhawnani and Abdul Hamid Abas of YMRM Galleria.

As written on June 16, 2014 in The Brunei Times, the plaintiffs (Ramesh Jiwatram Bhawnani and Abdul Hamid Abas ) sued a registered society Indian Chamber of Commerce and the 25 defendants as members of the society for libel (refer to the names below at the illustration). Ok, libel means a published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation or in other words, a written defamation. So in this case, the Indian Chamber of Commerce has written a defamation on both Ramesh Jiwatram Bhawnani and Abdul Hamid Abas.

The society and 24 of its members, according to court documents, are being sued by plaintiffs Ramesh Jiwatram Bhawani and Abdul Hamid Abas for libel on grounds that between April 5, 2010 and November 29, 2010, the Indian Chamber of Commerce wrote letters allegedly containing libelous statements to the Indian High Commission.

The Indian Chamber of Commerce had applied to court to “strike out” the case against them because they said the letters having been sent to the Indian High Commission were subject to immunity. The court said no such immunity applied.

In the recent, publication of The Brunei Times, “The appeal is dismissed,” the Court of Appeal said. “There will be an order that the respondents’ costs of this appeal be taxed if not agreed and paid by the appellants.”

For previous news and updates of the case, you can click here, here and here from The Brunei Times.

Representing the Indian Chamber of Commerce is Siva Sankaran from Sankaran Halim & Associates while representing Ramesh Jiwatram Bhawani and Abdul Hamid Abas is Pengiran Izad of Pg Izad and Lee which won the case.

The names illustrated by The Brunei Times.

Let this be a learning lesson for all of us that “libel” is a serious offense. You can seriously land yourself into huge trouble and even at a very high cost. There was one case where a legal firm demanded $3 million compensation in the High Court against a local printing company for libel by calling the lawyers “piranhas, vultures and scavengers” back in 2002. In the end, the Brunei High Court in a landmark defamation suit awarded a prominent legal firm and the lawyers BND 673,488 in damages against the local printing company. Source: [Borneo Bulletin, 2002].

So do be careful what you type or write before posting and even I’m being careful in my blog posting as my intention is to help create awareness to the public especially matters like this.

The journey of Asari Rashid

BIBD, via its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, showed its full support for Asari Rashid to become the first Bruneian to participate in the Polar Circle Marathon. BIBD’s support for Asari was aimed to create and raise awareness for developing a community that cares, whilst playing its role as an integral and strong partner of the community. This partnership is developed to encourage a positive influence and inspire other members of the community to support similar awareness raising efforts.

Asari is an epileptic PhD student from Newcastle University, UK and a lecturer in Institut Teknologi Brunei. He is also the 1st Bruneian to run the Polar Circle Marathon, participating in the Polar Bear Challenge, which tested his ability to run both the marathon and a half-run within the two days of the competition.

Earlier before the Polar Circle Marathon, Asari mentioned, “I’ve had a lot of people telling me it’s difficult but this is something I really want to try.” Asari, clearly unfazed by the idea of the run, continued, “I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009 with tendency of having seizures but it has never stopped me from doing what I love. I am also very thankful to BIBD for providing me with the opportunity to embark on my dream, as together we are able to show the world that everyone has the ability to succeed, regardless of their drawbacks.

“I was inspired to take the feat in order to raise awareness of the needs of people with diseases and show that we are both resilient and determined not to let it become an obstacle in pursuing our dreams including achieving better education. Everyone needs education and it will start from their adolescence, children need to be given as much opportunity in life as possible.”

Asari is no stranger to long distance running, having trained with the Tyne Bridge Harriers running club, had already competed in numerous challenges including completed a Aviva Singapore Ironman 70.3, three marathons, and an Ultramarathon “The Wall” from Carlisle to Newcastle Gateshead, which saw him running 110km miles in an impressive 15hrs and 55mins. The Polar Circle Marathon included a classic 42.195km marathon and a half marathon. The Marathon was held in the worst running conditions of under – 20°C in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland for two consecutive days.

Starting at Kangerlussuaq, the run passes the endless ice and arctic tundra of Greenland, which makes up the glacial deposit landscapes and soundless arctic desert. Part of the route takes place on the 100,000-year-old ice sheet but the main part of the race is run on roads, mostly covered in snow that connects to the inland ice just north of the Polar Circle.

A similar effort for awareness, BIBD’s ALAF Programme (Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future), provides a similar avenue for all members of the public to support and provide assistance to underprivileged and orphaned students, through sponsorships of basic needs, educational items and welfare, as well as mentoring and counselling, so that the students can stay focused on their education and maximise their potential. Through ALAF, BIBD hopes to lend its support to His Majesty’s 2035 vision of achieving a 100 per cent level of education and over time, reduce poverty in Brunei.

To further support the aspiration of this program and to enable the deserving students to pursue their education and dreams, members of the public are welcome to provide contributions with a minimum of B$1.01 via the bank’s e-banking channels, BIBD Online, BIBD Mobile, or use any BIBD ATM machines. The public can also use the standing instruction function in their accounts to provide a continuous donation stream into the ALAF account at 1018181811.

Feel the Space with Luminox

Check out the great deals from BIBD on the current roadshow of Luminox watches at The Mall until this Sunday

Luminox has taken Brunei by storm and it’s great to know that many Bruneians are aware of the Luminox brand. The brand had a major exposure when Scott Cassell, an expert counter-terrorism operative and a consummate undersea explorer, came to Brunei and promoted the Luminox brand last year and that has helped to escalate the awareness of Luminox watches to the Bruneians.

Yesterday was a great occasion as the Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, officiated the launch of Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition at The Mall which will end on 2nd November. This is the first time that Luminox under the partnership of Crystal Time (Singapore) and Chang Ein Hong hold an exhibition for Luminox. This will be a week long event as they will give time for the public to learn and be educated on the strengths of Luminox brand.

Of course, the biggest draw of the lot is the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi where Brunei became the only 3rd country in the world besides Singapore and Malaysia to have the watch available in the market. Awesome!! Of course, the other draw is the presence of a giant model of Lynx Mark II spacecraft by XCOR at the atrium of The Mall. If you are lucky enough, you will also get a chance to take some selfies with the astronaut.

It was such a soothing occasion as the guest of honour is also fond of space exploration to begin with especially during his younger days as a student. He shared his knowledge of the Sputnik and the Apollo. Of course, the popular iconic figure Neil Armstrong was mentioned as the first man to land of the moon and hence the famous phrase came about – “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.

I didn’t even know that the Minister himself is a fan of watches. He cleverly linked time pieces with the ongoing advancements that we have been going through such as transportation, electronics and computers. He sees this exhibition as an avenue to spark creativity among the Bruneians in terms of invention and also for the betterment of our country.

Also present were Abdul Mutalib Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Hj Md Yusof, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Communications, Mohammed Riza Dato Paduka Hj Mohammed Yunos, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad Hj Daud, Jennifer Tan, Executive Director of Crystal Time (Singapore), Pamela Tan, Brand Manager of Crystal Time (Singapore) and Chong Ain Hong, General Manager of Chong Ein Hong Watch Dealer.

The Minister of Communications is huge fan of space exploration and I learnt a few things from his speech. Insightful!!

Jennifer Tan, Executive Director of Crystal Time (Singapore), thanked the Minister and also the team for making the exhibition possible

Pamela Tan, Brand Manager of Crystal Time (Singapore) shared a few things what the Luminox XCOR Pilot Professional Ana-Digi is capable of withstanding (even from a blender and a microwave)

Members of the public are welcome to visit the Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition during this period and enjoy special privileges on purchases of Luminox watches. Exclusively for BIBD Debit Card holders, with every Luminox purchased, they will receive a free Luminox Adventure Knife and take part in a lucky draw to win a Luminox watch. Awesome!!

Also do follow @luminoxbn on instagram and they are currently running an IG competition and who knows you can stand a chance to win a Luminox Space Goodie Bag.

Another reason for the exhibition for Luminox is spread awareness that Luminox has been chosen to be the official timepiece for the pilots of XCOR Space Expeditions. So far, Luminox have covered all three dimension of mankind – land, sea and air. Now with this new time piece, Space is the limit. It was also shared that almost 30 Luminox watches were sold last Sunday alone which shows a good demand for the said brand. Remember, peeps, do watch out for the counterfeit products that are deceiving and do buy and promote genuine watches from Luminox.

The event held at the Atrium, The Mall, Gadong with the theme “Your Health is in Your Hands”, with the objective to raise continuous awareness of breast cancer and its prevention to the community, in particular amongst young women in the working age group in Brunei Darussalam.

Breast Screening Package

The Jerudong Park Medical Centre celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month with an attractive offer on Breast Screening Package valued at only BND99. The promotion will run until 14 November 2014.

Last week, this was announced in a press conference by Aini Zulfa binti Hj Asbinin, the Marketing Executive, and Dr Shyja Abraham Sequeira, Radiologist from JPMC’s Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI).

The screening package entitles a patient to One Doctor’s Consultation and Mammography. While waiting for the medical results, patient will be given a complimentary breast self-examination lesson, which is excluded from the normal price.

The aim of a screening mammogram is to detect cancer at an early stage, where the hospital can offer treatment options and control the spread of the tumour.

During the mammography procedure, most women think the process is painful. There will be a little discomfort as the breast will be compressed between two plates, which are done to flatten and spread the breast tissue. It gives optimal compression to the breasts without causing excess pain to the patient. Each session of the four x-rays lasts for a few seconds.

According to statistics, the numbers of breast cancer in Brunei are quite high where patients suffer more as it spreads causing disabilities. If we detect at the early stage, it will limit the sufferings of the patients as well as family members. Through this breast screening programme, not only to detect cancer at an early stage but also educate the public.

Chances that abnormality is cancer during mammogram are very rare as maybe only one out of thousand persons screened will be cancer positive. Risks of having breast cancer are if you have a first degree relative with breast cancer, such as mother or sister who developed breast cancer before the age of 50.

“As part of our Breast Cancer Awareness Programme, we are pleased to hold this promotion to draw women’s attention to the importance of breast screening. We advise women to practice self-examination at home monthly and report any suspicious abnormality like a lump or nipple discharges to their doctor even if they have had a recent normal mammogram,” mentioned Aini Zulfa binti Hj Asbinin, the Marketing Executive of JPMC.

“Every woman should have a breast screening once every two years. For ages 40 to 49 years, breast screening should be done once a year. Ages 50 to 69 years should have it done once every two years”, stated Dr Shyja Abraham Sequeira, Radiologist from Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI) of JPMC.

Women must be 40 to 69 years old to be entitled for the screening package as this is the age range where most abnormalities are detected. If patient had a mammogram less than a year back, they are not advised to take up the screening at this juncture.

Physically disabled women can undergo the screening as the machine used also caters for immobilize persons if they are able to sit on a wheelchair with extra effort but the screening cannot be done for bed-ridden patients.

Patient is required to set up a pre-appointment where they can contact the Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI) directly at 261 1433 ext. 2224 or e-mail to ddireception@jpmc.com.bn. Patients are advised to come 15 minutes prior to the appointment.

If patient is new to JPMC, they are required to pay a one-time fee of BND10 at the Main Reception, Level 2 of JPMC. Patients must bring their passport or identity card for registration purposes. Package inclusions are not exchangeable with other services and any unutilized tests or services are non-refundable.

JPMC’s Department of Diagnostic Imaging (DDI) is one of the most modern imaging departments in Southeast Asia. They offer a comprehensive range of services such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Multi Slice CT Scanner, Digital Dental Imaging, CR Radiography (X-Ray). The clinic is open every Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturday from 8am to 12noon. For more information, please visit their website at www.jpmc.com.bn.

Get them white again!!

The Jerudong Park Medical Centre is offering an attractive promotion for professional teeth whitening treatment valued at BND799 (Usual price is BND1000) with free initial consultation. This promotion will run from 15 September to 15 November 2014 and can be redeemed till 30 December 2014.

This was announced at a press conference by Ak Danny Pg Tajuddin, the Marketing Officer, and Dr Ravi Pai, Consultant Endodontist and Head of Dental Department of JPMC. Also present was Dr Dharma Rai, Consultant Prosthodontist at JPMC.

“Oral health makes a huge presence in our lives especially in our simple daily activities. With our promotion, it can help to enhance the whiteness of your teeth in just a single visit to our Dental Clinic”, mentioned Ak Danny Pg Tajuddin, the Marketing Officer of JPMC.

“Professional In-office Teeth Whitening Procedure is the quickest way to whiten teeth under carefully monitored conditions which allow for the safe, controlled use of whitening gel – yielding results that are visible immediately”, stated Dr Ravi Pai, Consultant Endodontist and Head of Dental Department of JPMC.

Teeth discoloration is caused by natural darkening and yellowing as people age, drinking tea, coffee or fizzy drinks, natural and artificial food colorings, smoking and tobacco stains.

An appointment is required for the treatment, where patients are advised to come 15 minutes earlier prior to the appointment time. Before deciding whether teeth whitening is suitable for the patient, the dentist will first conduct a comprehensive examination of their teeth and gums to ensure proper teeth healthcare which is free during the promotion period.

They will also consult on their oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine if they will benefit from the treatment. Patients with extensive dental work, expectant mothers and children below 16 years old are not recommended to go through the procedure.

The procedure takes up approximately 2 hours. Patient’s gums and mouth are first protected with isolation materials. The dentist will carefully apply the whitening gel to their teeth and uses a patented blue light to oxidize the gel during the procedure.

The procedure is normally painless; however a very small percentage of patients may experience a minor sensitivity during or after the procedure. A sensitivity relief gel will be used to tackle the sensitivity.

The teeth whitening treatment can last up to 2 years if the patient take care and maintain the brightness of their teeth.

JPMC’s Dental Clinic offers a comprehensive range of dental services such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, implantology, oral surgery, general dental procedures and more. The clinic is open every Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturday from 8am to 12noon. For more information, please visit their website at www.jpmc.com.bn.

The two-day event organised by food movement, Raw Food Asia, is held at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR).

Join in the many activities such as high intensity training and zumba sessions or connect with health experts who will share some of the biggest myths around nutrition and health that keep you from feeling your absolute best.

Take the opportunity to meet Susan Laing, an iridologist and nutritionist from the United Kingdom who will share her expertise on Iridology. Laing said just by looking at one’s iris, she is able to discover the root cause of imbalances such as food intolerances as well as deficiencies in basic minerals and vitamins.

She is also trained in nutrition, therefore will be teaching participants on how to make super foods, which is good not only for the gut but will assist in cleansing the liver and gallbladder.

Laing will also be providing an eye test with prescription and Iris photos for the price of $49.99 and it is available only by making an appointment.

If you need someone to motivate you, look no further than Singapore’s very own Blade Runner Md Shariff Abdullah, who runs with a prosthetic blade. Durian fans, on the other hand, can look forward to hearing from Lindsay Gasik. The durian researcher from the United States will be on hand to share her scientific outlook on the king of fruits.

She, along with her husband Rob Culclasure, has been to 12 different countries in the past two years to research and record the various types of durians and will be imparting her knowledge on the different varieties, which are found throughout her travels.

4 years ago Jacqueline Teo was told she had two tumours in her head. The news brought this ultra- marathoner Jacqueline into depression and to the brink of suicide before her mother dragged her to a running track and ordered her to run again.

Today, she stands strong and is proud to say that she’s completed her 12th Marathon as at August 2014. So come on down to hear her story of struggle and survival.

Hari Raya (not-so) fever

The usual common Raya words or quotes that I come across led to one thing – “It has been a quiet Raya”. Sometimes pictures don’t paint the whole story especially when I’m browsing through my instagram feeds. Perhaps it’s my generations of friends that are experiencing the same fate as I am. To be honest, I haven’t been celebrating Hari Raya. I have gave up on my 1st day Hari Raya ritual visits which have been customary for the past 30 plus years (ok, I’m that young :p).

This feeling of “Slow Raya” have been ongoing for the past few years. I have no theories to why this is so but at least the spirit is still there. This year alone, I only paid a visit to 7 houses in the past three days. The first day of Raya I opted to spend some “me” time and I really enjoyed that day itself. I could just drive here and there with ease and I spend some good time at the beach on Raya morning.

I can’t wait to join my family for Hari Raya in Singapore next week. It has been a while since I flew off. Two months to be exact. So it’s one of those periods where I will be outstation once again 😀

For those who wants to share your Hari Raya pictures here, you can email at ranoadidas(a)gmail.com and I can share them here 😀 Once again, Selamat Hari Raya and do drive safe and do eat proportionately.

Kinda of a small family reunion with my siblings at Azirah’s home. Love you guys and too bad I couldn’t catch up with the rest on that day since I left earlier. Great company and great food.

Thanks Kamila for the invitation and love the architecture of your cozy home. Catch up soon 😀

The Ajamain brothers. I’m craving for the nasi lemak *haha* Learnt some new things about what my Smart TV can do now 😀

We are almost colour coordinated. It’s always a ritual to pay the Abas a visit. This began all the way the 2001 and still going strong. Idham was one of my old time buddies where we would waste our precious time playing Pro Evo and Winning Eleven on every free time *lol* Those were the days.

A new place I visited for Raya at the Selamat’s. Apparently their home is just like 3 minutes from mine. Thank you Ewa for the invitation and you have friendly parents.

It was quite rare that I paid a visit during the day at the Jaafars and it happened yesterday. It was a great catch up session but sadly AJ68 wasn’t present as he was on duty.

Now the interesting part about my visit to the Jaafars was this particular Chili sauce. Apparently this is the 10th most spiciest Chili in the world and hence named Da’ Bomb. My friend who could tolerate spicy stuff had trouble dealing with Da’Bomb spiciness and she only took a tiny drop. She had to put ice cubes in her mouth to sooth the spiciness which spread to her tongue, gums, throat and lips. Yes, just from a tiny lil drop. That’s all it takes.

Love the cookies and as always the rendang 😀 Thank Fana for hosting once again and allowing me to charge my Mac Air there too *haha* Thanks also for donating some blood to JPMC.

Do help spread the word, peeps!! A relative of mine is in need of A+ blood.

Some of the people who donated their blood recently and thank you so much for saving lives and your contribution. The family members are truly appreciative of your kindness.

I have been receiving many Raya gifts and one surprising gesture was from Hui Chiet. Thank you so much for the chocolates.

What an awesome latte!! This was how I spent my 1st Raya night – chilling at Soffian’s crib and enjoying the coffee he made for me.

My first movie night at Cove Cinema (Soffian’s crib) and I finally managed to catch Rush. This is such an awesome movie from start to finish. Definitely gave me some adrenalin rush. Superb portrayal and acting. Verdict: 8/10

I spent my Hari Raya morning by the beach and it was such a perfect weather. How I wish every morning would be this cooling.

A great catching up bonding session with my bestie that morning. I’m also impressed that they managed to clean the Meragang beach too.

The best thing about Hari Raya is having good parking spaces especially at popular places such as Times Square area. I caught Dawn of the Planets of the Apes for the second time at Times Cineplex on the First Raya afternoon. There was a pretty decent crowd too.

One great thing about Hari Raya is the emptiness of the atrium at The Mall, Gadong. Nice Mickey Mouse :p

This was taken a day before Hari Raya. Leonard and Jackie were at the site where the tree fell due to strong winds and it disrupted the electricity cables around their neighborhood.

Good thing the Bomba was to the rescue and they managed to clear the tree after the incident.
