Happy Mother’s Day
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, as personal representative of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, bestowed medals to 636 recipients yesterday at Istana Nurul Iman.
Six hundred and thirty-six individuals including government officials and staff, uniformed personnel and members of the private sector were awarded with state honorary medals yesterday in a ceremony held at Istana Nurul Iman.
By command of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, represented the monarch in conferring the medals. I know there are many fans of Luminox from Brune Darussalam. You can get them at Chang Ein Hong watch dealer at The Mall (Gadong) and Yayasan Complex. Last year, Luminox made its presence felt in the Sultanate by having a Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition at The Mall and it was a great timing to showcase to the public what’s great about the Luminox brand.
For you info, Luminox has a strong relationship with the Navy SEAL team for over 25 years for the reason being that SEALS discovered the unique self-powered illumination technology found in Luminox watches and the rest was history. Luminox continued to enhance the technology and specs to meet the demanding requirements of the Navy SEALS.
To make it more interesting, Luminox created a special event for the journalists called the Luminox Spec Ops Challenge, a programme developed by Luminox with retired Navy SEALS to give a chance to civilians to train like a SEAL for a day. The event took place in Langkawi in September last year.
I know my friend Aziz Idris had the opportunity to part of the programme which lasted 6 hours which was trimmed from the a 24-week programme, dealing with basic underwater demolition. From this programme, the journalists will understand the experience the Navy SEALS have to go through and get a glimpse of the mental and physical challenge throughout the procedure.

I’m a huge fan of jollibee because of their chocolate sundae and not-anymore-available Nasi Lemak (due to low demand). Of course, their Chicken Joy is still one of their best sellers and I would it rate it my top 3 fast food chicken in Brunei.
Last Friday, Jollibee unveiled their latest project where the Philippines fast food franchise appointed its first local brand ambassador Liyana Yus famously known for her role in Brunei’s first featured film “Yasmine”.
The event took place at Times Square Shopping Centre and it was a press launch event to officially introduce Liyana as the face of Jollibee in Brunei.
Liyana has been a huge fan of Jollibee since she was a kid and her favourite is still ChickenJoy. Did you know that Jollibee in Brunei was the first ever international outlet outside the Philippines? And yes, the first outlet is at Utama Bowling back in 1987. Amazing!!!

Jhing was excited to announce the new partnership with Liyana and he believes that the young talent of Liyana embodies Jollibee’s excellence in the fast food franchise.
For Liyana, this is the first opportunity for her to be an ambassador of an international brand. I’m pretty sure this will open doors for more opportunities in the near future.
So far, there are 12 Jollibee outlets in Brunei and it will be growing from time to time.
I did highlight to Jhing on the defunct menu item, Nasi Lemak, but let’s see what happens. Let’s hope it might make a comeback even if it’s a just promotional offer. Don’t worry, we have our social media team + Liyana to push your product too 😀 Congratulations Liyana and Jollibee on the new milestone.

As you know, Jollibee is all about product quality at an affordable price. What more can you ask for? It’s crispylicious, juicylicious inside out and anyone can afford it. The family oriented fast food chain has made it one of the most popular fast food chain in Brunei.
I wasn’t aware also of their latest drive thru at Kilanas which will be a big hit among the residents residing near Kilanas. For this commitment, you can see that Brunei remains a key market for Jollibee in its vision to become one of the biggest QSR brands globally.
I still remember the founder and chairman of Jollibee Foods Corporation (the Philippines), Tony Tan Caktiong, addressing a keynote speech at Asia Inc Forum event at The Empire Hotel & Country Club back in 2007. What an inspiring story and the legacy lives on!!

One word: Impressive. Congratulations to Dilys Chai and Denise Chai on the opening of your new cafe, Rack & Brew. Love the deco, love the atmosphere and most of all, love the food too. The cakes are amazing too – my personal favourite is the Red Velvet Cake.
The cafe is located above Paddington House of Pancake (Gadong) and the area used to be a boutique store (Deseo) and now the boutique store is located on the 2nd floor, just above Rack & Brew. You can follow @rackandbrew on instagram for updates.
According to Borneo Bulletin, Dilys Chai revealed that Rack & Brew was part of her dissertation project back in the UK. Dilys had some sampling of her desserts at Hua Ho Manggis Mall and the responses were pretty good.
Rack & Brew operates from 11am to 10pm daily at Abdul Razak Complex in Gadong. I’m definitely dining there next time.

BIBD’s Wealth Management Unit Officer, Rozielawati bti Hj Jamil, conducting the financial talk to civil servants
Early this week, BIBD’s Wealth Management Unit (WMU) today, as part of its goal to help the public understand their finances and manage it wisely, held a briefing to around 50 new officers and staff of the departments under the Ministry of Development.
The talk was held at the Indera Pahlawan Hall of the Ministry, and was delivered by BIBD’s WMU Officer, Rozielawati bti Hj Jamil. She began by giving a brief introduction of what Financial Planning is and asked the audiences about their monthly spending pattern. After sharing a few tips and personal experiences, she emphasized the importance of understanding the difference between ‘wants’ and ‘needs’. An example of ‘needs’, is giving priority to purchasing groceries and household necessities while shopping; as a result, it may help us to save money from buying items that are not urgently required.
She also introduced another tool in financial planning i.e investment and advises the audience not to invest without understanding and analyzing the investment products first, or putting ‘all eggs in one basket’, meaning not diversifying the investment into different portfolios; which can help generate different returns depending on their future plans such as for retirement, financing children education and getting a dream home.
She also highlighted not to be a victim of the Ponzi scheme, an investment of unknown source, or any investment products from companies that are not registered with Brunei’s central bank regulatory, the Authority Monetary of Brunei Darussalam.

The most liked photo on my IG in many months and I can see why. His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in International Politics, from Kings College London in the United Kingdom.
The son of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam received the conferment of his degree at a graduation ceremony held at the Barbican Centre in London two days ago, His Majesty’s Office announced yesterday. Other members of the Royal Family who were present at the graduation were His Royal Highness Prince Hj ‘Abdul ‘Azim, Her Royal Highness Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah, and Her Royal Highness Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bolkiah.

Zakat contribution
BIBD today handed over two mock cheques to the Islamic Religious Council of Brunei for the purpose of Zakat contributions for BIBD and its customers. The event took place at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Office in Jalan Menteri Besar, Berakas.
BIBD’s Zakat contribution for 2013 amounted to B$ 2,355,519.40, whilst Zakat contributions from the customers of BIBD for the period of 2013-2014 amounted to B$ 241,816.24.
The mock cheques for the contributions were handed over by the Chairman of Shariah Advisory Body for BIBD and its subsidiaries, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Setia Raja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaili bin Haji Mohiddin to Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman, Minister of Religious Affairs on behalf of MUIB (Islamic Religious Council of Brunei).
Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof, Deputy Chairman of the BIBD Shariah Advisory Body along with BIBD Managing Director, Yang Mulia Javed Ahmad.

The concept of Zakat is to donate a portion of one’s wealth to the eligibility group of people named as asnaf Zakat mentioned in the Holy Book of Al- Quran in Surah At-Taubah: Verse 60. The act is considered highly honorable as Zakat is not only to cleanse one’s wealth but also provides spiritual purification, drawing Muslims closer to Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala.
The significance for Zakat in society is that to eradicate the poverty via an approved methodology in providing and managing the society’s economy and finance. Zakat is the 3rd pillar of Islam, making it is compulsory on Muslims, provided they meet the conditions which are the required nisaab (the minimum amount of wealth i.e 85 gram of gold or their equivalent in cash that one must have before Zakat is payable) and haul (the possession of assets for the whole hijrah year).
In order to help its muslim customers meet this religious obligation, BIBD strongly urges its customers to utilize their branches to pay their Zakat at its many counters at its many strategic locations in Brunei Darussalam. Press release and image courtesy of BIBD.

Last evening, Brunei Panini Collectors had a sungkai gathering at Hadfa Catering restaurant. It was organised by the Brunei Panini fans themselves and the event started off with a prize presentation for their quiz competition. There were some interesting prizes including ‘tiga ikat durian tempatan”. Following that is a lucky draw for every one present at the event. Adison Marketing also gave out prizes for the winners of our facebook contests.

Nationwide prayers for Palestine at 13 mosques at 10:45am tomorrow

Siti Kamaluddin who was recently in Switzerland to receive the award was very grateful for her team and she didn’t expect to win anything and furthermore, she was already contented on just being nominated among the other Asian movies. What amazed me is that Yasmine even managed to pip The Raid 2: Berandal in that same category and I truly love the Raid 2 because of its pure execution and artistic violence. Siti shared that Yasmine has the heart warming storyline as compared to The Raid 2.

Siti was also shocked that it also beat out her favourite director Tsui Hark who directed Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon 3D in the award. Other movies listed in the Asian Film category were Kung Fu Divas (the Philippines), Live (Japan), Monsoon Shootout (India), That Demon Within (Hong-Kong), The Raid 2: Berandal (Indonesia), The Suspect (South Korea) and Young Detective Dee (China).
Congratulations once again to the Siti, Din and the whole crew of Origins Film in reaching a new milestone even if the movie isn’t even out yet in Brunei. Let’s not put pressure here now on what to expect on Yasmine the movie but let’s embrace the fact that we Bruneians are able to compete with other foreign talents given the opportunity.
The crew has making round visits to private and government schools in Brunei to a very warm reception. Currently Liyana the main star and her co-star Nadia are in Jakarta for a similar roadshow to increase awareness of Yasmine. With this news, I’m super excited and I can’t wait to attend the Premiere night of Yasmine the movie in August.

Galleria YMRM have quite a selection of fabric for “cara melayu” and what impressed me the most is the IMA fabric which is the Japanese cotton material. The price is higher than the normal type but now they have a promotional price where it’s being slashed from $15.90 to $12.90 per meter. What’s great about this material is that it’s of high quality and it’s pretty cooling and soothing to the skin. Last year, they have 20 different colours and this year, they have 60 different colours with the IMA material. This really shows how good the material and the trust it has coming from customers. You can look elegant wearing one without to fork out so much.
They also have good quality ones for the ladies for Baju Kurung and they have different price range from the affordable ones to the high end and of course, the quality is guaranteed. It’s no surprise that most of the tailors in Brunei make their fabrics and textile according to the management. For the ladies, if you want something more elegant as in Kebaya type, then I recommend you go fo the laces and YMRM have tons of those in both branches.
Perhaps the ladies will be more interested in the Italian silk that just arrived at YMRM stores, direct from Italy. The prices are at premium but you will see why it is expensive because of the quality and the designs are pretty unique as well. YMRM are only bringing limited designs and quantity so at least the ladies will feel more privileged.
Galleria YMRM are not only popular for selling fabrics for men and women but they are also selling in-house lights and also “cucul” lights for Hari Raya. So if you need some new lightings in your house, they have a wide selection to choose from. YMRM already have tents outside their premise selling deco lights (cucul) and this have been their trademark for a few years already.

YMRM has actively been giving back to the community by having special discounts every now and then. Furthermore, customers can even buy fabric as low as $1 per meter. Galleria YMRM Director, Hitesh Ramesh Bhawnani, shared how successful the crazy hour sales have been and thanked the media for the overall success. He said that customers even have to park along the highway to get into YMRM at Tungku Link. For those who didn’t know, YMRM Tungku Link held two sessions of “Special Happy Hours” sale few weeks ago.
Guess how much fabric was sold in one night alone? Believe it or not, 40,000 meters. These materials are mostly the Cara Melayu fabric and these materials come from Egypt, Japan, Korea and others. This Ramadhan, KFC wants to celebrate with you with some exciting news for the occasion.
First is the new product of Tangy Crunch now available at all outlets. A new creation with the tagline Liven up your taste buds!, the Tangy Crunch chicken features an irresistible combination of tangy and crunch with a marinadethat includes lime and a special blend of spice. Available in two combos, Combo A comes with 2 pieces of chicken, 4 pieces of Onion Rings, 1 Colonel Rice, 1 Colonel Soup and a regular carbonated drink for only B$8.50 and Combo B comes with 3 pieces of chicken, 1 butterscotch bun, Cheezy Wedges and a regular carbonated drink for only B$9.50. During this time, Hot and Spicy will temporary be replaced by the Tangy Lime.
Secondly, majority of the KFC outlets will be operating from 11am to 2am daily during the Ramadhan month to cater to the customer’s sahur needs. As you know, Yasmine the movie has been getting a lot of publicity in the media and they have been aggressive in their exposure especially in government and private schools to increase the awareness of Yasmine’s movie as well as educate the students the essence of film making and more of behind-the-scenes moments. For your information, Yasmine is a Brunei featured film produced by Origin Films Sdn Bhd, and the movie has created good waves to be featured in Shanghai Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival.
Recently Origin Films’ cast and crew paid a visit to schools – St. George’s School, St. Andrew’s School, Yayasan Primary School, Maktab Sains School and ISB to name a few. Of course, the main draw of the visit is Liyana Yus who plays the main lead role in Yasmine. Also accompanying her were Siti Kamaluddin the director of Origin Films, Din Kamaluddin, the producer of Origin Films, Chan Man Ching, action director of Origin Films and Nadiah Wahid, co-star of Yasmine.
They have been warmly received during the ASEAN Consumer Fair where Origin Films made their presence felt with appearance of the lead actor Liyana. It was a successful project initiated by her co-star Nadiah Wahid and her efforts paid off.

I’m qute disappointed so far with Brazil. Yes, the host nation as they were pushed to the brink against Chile last night. Being the host nation, this is a very disappointing display by Brazil and if they were to have the same performance like last night, they won’t stand a chance against Colombia who beat Uruguay 2-0. Chile was pretty close from snatching the victory if it wasn’t for the bar that saved the blushes of Brazil from an excellent Pinilla’s strike near the end.
Probably the worrying factor are the strikers at Brazil’s disposal – Jo and Fred who haven’t yet to impress in the tournament and further more, Hulk was just showing his brilliance on the pitch after a lackluster performance in the first three matches. I don’t see Brazil heading as far to the finals with France and Germany also breathing down their necks.
Now Colombia is one team that many have not taken account for. They are a compact team with many creativity in attack with the likes of star player James Rodriguez, and Juan Cuadrado and they even topped the group stage with 9 points. Though the group stage didn’t possess much threat, they shone where other competent teams failed to when going against weaker opponents. I can see Colombia reaching the semi-finals but it will be a harder test either against France or Germany if one of them reaches the semis.
Of course, the biggest news that have faded away is the banning of Luiz Suarez for his biting incident in the Uruguay-Italy match. I believe the suspension given to him by FIFA is still kinda lenient considering the fact that this is the third time Suarez has been fined and suspended for similar incidents. As a Liverpool player, I am disappointed and this shows old habits die hard. I’m not sure what’s the future lies now for Luis Suarez and Liverpool.
So who are my picks for the rest? Germany to win, France to win, Netherlands to beat Mexico, Costa Rica to go through, Argentina to beat Swiss while Belgium will edge USA.

It’s no small feat that Royal Brunei Airlines is one of the top businesses on Facebook with their amazing social media engagement with fans and customers. RB not only uses the social media platform for their latest airfare promos, but keeps the public apprised on corporate news, to listen to their customers feedback and comments, as an Emergency Response Team for Social Media Crisis and to bond, engage and be friends with customers and potential customers. As of 12pm on 23rd June 2014, they have 99,938 fans on Facebook, and anticipate hitting the big 100K over the weekend. They also have 10K followers on Twitter, close to 9K followers on Instagram.
