The Wednesday Drive

Riddle me this, Riddle me that. I didn’t have a proper sleep just yet as I finally spent a little bit of time with mom late at night with an early morning assignment the next few hours. I just miss the adrenalin, the old adrenalin that I used to have … a few years ago. Now you can tell how I’ve aged and not getting any younger. Then again, in my field of work, it always keeps me on my toes.

This morning, I had quick breakfast catch up session with Abby whom I envy for traveling more than I do. I hope we can have some time on the courts and burn some fats. I miss watching you hitting balls :p I’m glad that I didn’t have clash of events as two events happened one after another right after breakfast at Jing Chew.

Heroes Brunei had their press conference for the upcoming Batman V Superman Brunei Run and the event was held at McDonald’s Jerudong (the newest branch). Good to know that my buddy Aaron took my tip on the flow of the event even though it’s just a press conference. It was good to see partners of the Batman V Superman Brunei Run getting involved for the benefit of the charitable organisation – “National Welfare Fund”. So, Aaron Goh, good luck to your event and with your experience, this will be another successful charitable event and keep up creating more heroes in our lives. I shall be posting more stories on this event tomorrow.

Toastmasters update

This is it. After many months, the contest is back again for toastmasters. This time it will be International Speech (Inspirational) Contest and Table Topics Contest (the impromptu ones). With many seasoned speakers giving way for the newbies, I’m delighted to see participation from new faces of the toastmasters club that I’m currently in – Brunei Speakers’ Club.

The likes of Syatrah, Heidi, Adah, Maudena, Faiz, Jidun and the list goes on. So do come and support the contest which will be held tomorrow night (Tuesday 8th March) at Seameo Voctech and do refer to poster for details. Seameo Voctech is currently opposite the Gadong market and after the simpang of Taurean Arch. Good luck to all the contestants and I truly admire your tenacity and courage to be part of the contest.

Below are just some of the events that have been happening in relating to toastmasters. In Brunei Darussalam, we have four toastmasters club. It could have been five but the HSBC speakers’ club is now defunct. The existing ones are Brunei Speakers’ Club (the mother club for Brunei), OTTERS (Oil Town Talkers) Club in Seria, UBD Toastmasters Club, the youngest club of them all and finally the Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club.

Recently there was a joint meeting (collaboration) with Brunei toastmasters and Miri toastmasters which was held at OGDC in late February. It was led by new member of OTTERS, Naj Tarif, who was the organizing chair for this event. It was very courageous of him to take this heavy role especially since he is still a new member. The joint meeting went pretty well and the members from Miri truly learnt something from the Brunei toastmasters. I do hope for more collaboration between Brunei and Miri to further strengthen the bonds and relations while learning from each other.

Recently Delwin Keasberry, popularly known as @bruneitweet, gave an insightful presentation on being a good public speaker. He is currently a member of the Brunei Advanced Speakers’ Club and he is also an accomplished speaker, involving in many conferences locally and abroad. Keep it up, dude.

Congratulations to our newest member Afwa Mawawi for her first speech ice-breaker last week too and yes, I do agree with your points in your speech about “Embracing Change” for the betterment of our future. You can read more of the recaps of our Brunei Speakers’ Club meeting and who knows one day you can experience being a member of toastmasters.

Tennis update

The winners and consolation winners of the Brunei Darussalam Tennis Association Open Singles first leg with John Chia, BDTA Treasurer and Rasheed Abdullah, Tournament Secretary of BDTA at the National Tennis Centre

Aiman Abdullah taking a wefie with his tennis buddies

Late post: Last week, Aiman Abdullah claimed another trophy to add to his many list of collection when he dominated his young opponent Rajvir Jutla from the UK 6-0 6-0 in the finals of the Brunei Darussalam Tennis Association Open Singles first leg. He had a tougher encounter against Billy Wong in semis but he was mentally prepared for the finals and he congratulated Rajvir for making it this far.

The best part for the tournament was the emerging of younger tennis players and they showed that they can play in a competitive environment, giving them more confidence and exposure. For instance, Ben Sii (13 years old) won the consolation bracket against Darlin Sia in straight sets and now Ben Sii is currently in Sri Lanka for the the ITF World Junior Tennis Competition in Sri Lanka. Over there, he lost to his Iraqi opponent 6-0 6-2.

In the ladies’ open, powerhouse Australian Leah Gander dominated the tournament with convincing victories in the semi-finals and finals. She beat Japanese Hiromi Okochi 6-1 6-1 to claim her first title of the BDTA Open Singles. Lena Ang won the consolation trophy as she overcome her opponent Sharon in tie breaker after finishing in a 1-1 set.

BDTA treasurer John Chia handed the prizes to all the top winners of the tournament. The competition consisted of 22 players in the mens and 7 players in the ladies.

In other tennis news, there will be a Junior ITF tournament hosted at National Tennis Centre which started yesterday. Hence, the courts won’t be available until 13th March after the conclusion of the tournament. Good luck to the Brunei representatives in the Junior ITF tournament.

Swoop Dart’s

The management unveiling the logo of Swoop Dart’s, a newly established for electronic darts in Brunei. Congratulations.

Dart has become a new trend in Brunei Darussalam. Ever since the emergence of the soft tip darts. It has become popular hobby and I know a few of my friends who have taken up the hobby with the introduction of the soft tip electronic dart game.

Yesterday was the launch of a newly opened dart establishment called Swoop Dart’s which is located just behind Taurean Arch and it’s located on the first floor.

The management unveiled the logo to officiate the opening of the business and also present were the management of VSPhoenix Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Brunei Dart Association. The machines used are from VSPhoenix made in Korea. The Managing Director of VSPhoneix Malaysia Sdn Bhd talked briefly about the VSPhoenix Electronic Dart machines and its benefits.

There are many modes to choose from such as fun-goers, amateurs and even up to the professional level. What makes it interesting is the “Global” mode where you can challenge others and the webcam makes it more interesting so you won’t be caught cheating *lol* I kinda like the idea that the value of the Phoenix Card starts at $1 dollar and it can be topped up by using tokens which are available at the store.

The mission of the Swoop Dart’s is also to bring our local talents to abroad to compete in the international level which is a great sign indeed.

The Swoop Dart’s company is opened daily from 12pm to 10pm. So Hui Chiet, let’s play some darts, shall we? 😀

Run with Colours

You will be given these sunnies as well as part of the registration. Cool!!

Recently I posted that Brunei is a kingdom of expected runs. Only lately, a new run has been announced and that is the Run with Colours. I’ve seen this gimmick before and I was wondering if it will ever make it to Brunei. Waalaaa, it now has and the bad thing is I won’t be in the country for this event.

The Brunei Youth Council (MBB) is set to welcome all runners with a burst of colours at its charity run scheduled to be held on June 7 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas.

The event’s ‘Run with Colours’ concept is to pelt its participants with vibrant coloured powder at certain checkpoints throughout the route. Also known as the ‘Happiest 5K on the Planet’, the idea originated from the original Color Run that was held in the United States in 2012.

As stated in the press release, the run aims not only to encourage generosity by participating in a charity event but also to encourage Bruneians to emulate liveliness and harmony in a healthy way by spreading positivity through colours.

“We want it to be as exciting as possible since it’s the first of its kind in Brunei,” said Khairunnisa Ash’ari, Head of International Relations of MBB.

On top of that, some members from the organisation will be participating in the colour run by throwing blue-coloured powder unto the runners who pass by at a certain checkpoint during the run.

“The reason is because blue is the colour for autism; so students from Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) will be throwing the powder,” said Tiah Teck Cherng, an intern from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

There is no age limit in this charity run. Each registered runner is entitled to a T-shirt, a pair of exclusive ‘Run with Colour’ sunglasses, a bib as well as a finisher’s medal! Kit collection can be made from June 4 from 4pm to 8pm until June 8 from 8am to 12pm at the Indoor Stadium.

There will be two routes available; the 3km and the 5km routes. Registration fees are $30 and $35 respectively.

Payment for registration will be from May 11 until May 13 from 4pm until 10pm at the Indoor Stadium as well. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Brunei Youth Council as well as to SMARTER.

It was mentioned that the water truck will be deployed to clear any colour residue on the path and road of the mini fun run. So the public won’t be shocked to see a colourful road after the event. The management also advice to bring extra clothes and towel. A wet tissue or towel would also helped the participants in a way to clean off any colour paste on your skin. There will be more details on this event.

For more information, please email runwithcolours@gmail.com or check out the event’s Instagram @runwithcolours. To sign up for the run please log onto www.heroes.com.bn and click the events icon to register. Source: Michelle Tan of The Brunei Times.

Scalp Trichocare Hairspa

The ingredients and hair paste for the scalp treatment at Scalp Trichocare Hairspa. All the ingredients used natural and contain no preservatives.

Winnie checking her scalp before the treatment

The responses have been favourable. Those who have tried the services at Scalp Trichocare Hairspa will be impressed what they can offer as well as the service they provided. It’s not just a place to get pampered (for head massages) but it’s a great treatment for your scalps whether be it sensitive, oily or dry. My last visit was a few weeks ago as I tried a new system they offered for my sensitive scalp. I always enjoy the experience because I’m a sucker for head pampering.

So what’s special about the System B? It replaces chemical hair dye to avoid cancerous chemical infusion into the scalp. Its post therapy color on hair comes from the nature of the herbs itself. It has more benefits as it improves grey hair, hair loss, post natal hair loss, dandruff, sensitive, bald patches scalp and promotes hair growth.  In combination of the TCM ampoules, system B therapy provides essential nutrients for scalp to have beautiful hair.  It is freshly prepared without any preservatives.

What I enjoy about their service is that they will accommodate to your needs and consult you without any obligation. They focus more on the best optimum therapy for every customer. I know I should have visit their premise more on a regular basis since hair treatment requires multiple visits consistently to see a more favourable result. The growth also depends on the individuals. Some will have results in a short span of time while some might take a while. In most cases, the results can be seen as early as 2 weeks. Do check out some of the testimonials here.

The ingredients used

The paste being applied on the hair.

Another useful treatment from Scalp Trichocare Hairspa is the restoring of your black hair. As we age, some will tend to show signs of grey/white hair. I know I have little signs of that already. With the service they provide, they have seen customers growing new born black hair sprouting after treatment.

Now if you ask me what challenges the customers always face in this situation, it’s mostly self-esteem and confidence or the lack of it. Of course, with a positive attitude, it helps. This is where Scalp Trichocare Hairspa comes in and create that formula to transform your hair that will give your more confidence. Discipline and consistency are important as well for hair treatment. Hence, it’s important to keep your schedule intact if you want to achieve results.

Scalp Trichocare Hairspa is located at Gadong Central, Unit C35, 2nd Floor Block C, same building as The Boxx, Mr. Bakers Cafeteria and Sushi Tei but at the far end. I know parking can be a troublesome but it’s worth the effort especially if you are going for a hairspa.

After the hair paste being applied, your hair will be steamed for 20 minutes or so.

Kingdom of Expected Runs

The ladies during the launch of the “She Runs” event at Fitness Zone. Check out details below. Image courtesy of Fitness Zone.

Here I present to you, Brunei, the Kingdom of Expected Runs. There are a few runs that will take place in the whole month of May. I told myself that I won’t be getting involved in any runs per se and focus more on loosening up my muscles rather than focusing on my mini jogs. I learned that I won’t be able to improve my stamina and running time because I tend to get injured easily after 7-8 km. My bucket list is still the full marathon and I hope to do that by 2016.

What’s interesting about all the runs are that they have their own purpose and agenda. There’s a first time for a ladies only charity run organised by Fitness Zone called “She Runs”. Set to benefit the Children’s Cancer Foundation (YASKA), the charity run will take place on May 17 at Fitness Zone Serusop. ‘She Runs’ is dedicated to empower women to become a better self from the inside out and we hope to accomplish this in two ways – fitness goal and giving back to the society. You can click here for more details.

The next one is Scot Run 2K15 which focuses on fighting poverty through education and this is organised by @scot_brunei (Society for Community Outreach and Training). I like how they categorize the runs into three – Hopeful fighter (3km), Passionate fighter (5km) and Knowledgeable fighter (10km). The Scot Run 2015 also symbolized the 4th year anniversary of @scot_brunei. Registration has already closed and it will be held on 10th May 2015. You can click here for more details.

Next is the WBC Charity Run on the 3rd of May. This is also a first time that the Women’s Business Council Brunei Darussalam organising such an event. Though it is slated for 3rd May (during Brunei’s Family Day), the registration is still open until 21st April. The event on that weekend also include a two-day bazaar and a lucky draw. The run will begin at 6am from the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. It aims to raise money for Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans. For more information, please call 2422721 or through WCB email at wbc.bru@gmail.com. You can also visit the council’s website at www.wbcbrunei.wordpress.com

Finally the biggest run in May will be “The Run” which is focused more towards Pusat Ehsan and it’s happening on the 24th May at the Indoor Stadium. It has been announced that the registration and payment has been extended to 18th April 2015 by noon. This is another popular running event and it will be the fourth time that they are hosting a charity marathon. The theme for this year is “Where Every Step Matters” and they also carry a lot of backings from sponsors and partners. They will also have the half marathon for the Open category. For more information, you can click here.

So which run suits you or are you gonna take that challenge and do more than one or all? I know of a few friends doing at least 3 runs from the ones being mentioned. Good luck to all the participants and yes, Brunei is a kingdom of expected runs.

By Foot

Within one kilometre radius, Burger King has taken the initiative to deliver around Bandar area for the benefit of BK fans working in town. Of course, you can check the menus available on their Facebook page or on Foodpanda as well. I did verbally propose to them that I don’t mind being a temporary delivery boy for BK in town. I would actually love that experience.

According to the poster from BK that the delivery by foot will be from 9am to 4pm and the minimum order is $7. Did you know that Burger King is one of the popular food eateries in Foodpanda? So it does make sense to offer this service around Bandar since it’s really hard to find parking even for motor cyclists and it’s only within the 1 kilometre radius. Now wouldn’t you want a piece of the Taro Turnover Pie at your doorstep? 😀

Angkor Wat Marathon

Will I take part in next year’s Angkor Wat Half Marathon? Tempting. This year, I only came as a spectator and taking some photos 😀

I didn’t expect myself to actually witness a marathon at Angkor Wat itself. It was just coincidental that the Angkor Wat Marathon happened when I was still in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I did also bumped into two Bruneians there and I wished I was part of the spectacular event. Then again, I shall wait until next year as it will be the 20th edition of the Angkor Wat Marathon.

I also wanted to catch the sun rise over at Angkor Wat but I was lucky enough as it was kinda cloudy as well. Catching a near perfect sunrise there is pretty tricky. You just need to try your luck and it will be gone in a matter of minutes if you happen to catch one.

Nearly 8,000 runners participated in the event and that’s like more than double of Brunei’s normal marathon event. There are more than 78 countries participating in the marathon ranging from 3km, 10km to 21km categories. Back in 1996, there were only 654 runners from 14 countries.

For the first time ever, a Cambodian won the half marathon for the men’s category while a Singaporean won the 21km ladies’ category.

I came as early as 4:30am to get my tickets for Angkor Wat which costs a minimum of USD 20 which entitles you to a one day pass

It was great to see a full moon before the sunrise

Really inspiring to see them participated in the 21km race

There were quite a few of them too

I was videoing the beginning of the race. I didn’t realise how many 21km runners there were and the video lasted over 5 minutes…..

I wonder if he survived the whole run in that suit

The Department of Co-Curriculum Education is set to hold “Century Run 2015” in January next year to celebrate the 100th year of formal education in the country and also to raise funds.

Director of Co-Curriculum Education of the Ministry of Education, Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Bakar, briefed the media of the overall “Century Run” plan in a press conference recently at the Department of Co-Curriculum Education building in Lambak.

Pg Suhaimi said that “Century Run 2015” would replace the annual walkathon. He said the event, set on January 11, 2015 at the Haji Sir Muda Omar Ali Saifuddien Park, would be bigger and more fun-filled to bring together the officers and staff of the ministry in marking the 100 years of formal education and Teachers’ Day.

The Ministry of Education also aims for their officers and staff to strengthen their relationships.

Furthermore, the run also aims to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy body through exercises and to help reduce obesity among public servants and citizens of the Sultanate.

Another novelty for the “Century Run” is that this would be the first time in a decade where the participants would be asked to pay to be able to join.

Winners will also be awarded with medals.

Since the sporting event will be a fund-raiser, other ministries, prominent individuals, private groups and the general public are invited to contribute in the run.

Contributions from the participating runner will range from $20 to $30, depending on the category selected by the contributors.

The journey of Asari Rashid

BIBD, via its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, showed its full support for Asari Rashid to become the first Bruneian to participate in the Polar Circle Marathon. BIBD’s support for Asari was aimed to create and raise awareness for developing a community that cares, whilst playing its role as an integral and strong partner of the community. This partnership is developed to encourage a positive influence and inspire other members of the community to support similar awareness raising efforts.

Asari is an epileptic PhD student from Newcastle University, UK and a lecturer in Institut Teknologi Brunei. He is also the 1st Bruneian to run the Polar Circle Marathon, participating in the Polar Bear Challenge, which tested his ability to run both the marathon and a half-run within the two days of the competition.

Earlier before the Polar Circle Marathon, Asari mentioned, “I’ve had a lot of people telling me it’s difficult but this is something I really want to try.” Asari, clearly unfazed by the idea of the run, continued, “I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2009 with tendency of having seizures but it has never stopped me from doing what I love. I am also very thankful to BIBD for providing me with the opportunity to embark on my dream, as together we are able to show the world that everyone has the ability to succeed, regardless of their drawbacks.

“I was inspired to take the feat in order to raise awareness of the needs of people with diseases and show that we are both resilient and determined not to let it become an obstacle in pursuing our dreams including achieving better education. Everyone needs education and it will start from their adolescence, children need to be given as much opportunity in life as possible.”

Asari is no stranger to long distance running, having trained with the Tyne Bridge Harriers running club, had already competed in numerous challenges including completed a Aviva Singapore Ironman 70.3, three marathons, and an Ultramarathon “The Wall” from Carlisle to Newcastle Gateshead, which saw him running 110km miles in an impressive 15hrs and 55mins. The Polar Circle Marathon included a classic 42.195km marathon and a half marathon. The Marathon was held in the worst running conditions of under – 20°C in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland for two consecutive days.

Starting at Kangerlussuaq, the run passes the endless ice and arctic tundra of Greenland, which makes up the glacial deposit landscapes and soundless arctic desert. Part of the route takes place on the 100,000-year-old ice sheet but the main part of the race is run on roads, mostly covered in snow that connects to the inland ice just north of the Polar Circle.

A similar effort for awareness, BIBD’s ALAF Programme (Advocating Life-Long Learning for An Aspiring Future), provides a similar avenue for all members of the public to support and provide assistance to underprivileged and orphaned students, through sponsorships of basic needs, educational items and welfare, as well as mentoring and counselling, so that the students can stay focused on their education and maximise their potential. Through ALAF, BIBD hopes to lend its support to His Majesty’s 2035 vision of achieving a 100 per cent level of education and over time, reduce poverty in Brunei.

To further support the aspiration of this program and to enable the deserving students to pursue their education and dreams, members of the public are welcome to provide contributions with a minimum of B$1.01 via the bank’s e-banking channels, BIBD Online, BIBD Mobile, or use any BIBD ATM machines. The public can also use the standing instruction function in their accounts to provide a continuous donation stream into the ALAF account at 1018181811.

AITI Grant Scheme

The Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has opened another window for applications to its “GRANT for the Development of Local ICT and Digital Media Industries” from 1 November 2014 to 31 December 2014.

The AITI GRANT offers partial funding opportunities for local businesses as well as foreign companies with local partners from the ICT and digital media fields to acquire enhancement, ownership and marketing assistance for their existing “Brunei-Made” product or prototype that has significant commercial viability. There are three (3) grant types available, namely:

a) Enhancement Grant – for improving and upgrading existing products;

b) Ownership Grant – for obtaining certification and quality management systems such as trademarks, patent, and IPR; and

c) Marketing Grant – for marketing and improving existing branding, packaging, design or labeling.

The grant amount varies depending on the type of grant applied and the classification of the businesses. Each applicant is allowed to apply for more than one grant type for the same product with a maximum cap of B$300,000 per category within eighteen (18) months project duration.

To be eligible for the AITI GRANT, an applicant must have valid AITI Accredited Business (AAB) Status and has financial capability to inject an initial amount of self-funding prior to the start of the GRANT project. The applicant must also have developed an existing product or prototype and wishes to obtain the grant to improve and enhance the technological aspects of the product, to improve marketing strategies, as well as to acquire a wider coverage of Intellectual Property Rights protection for their product.

Applications will be evaluated based on four main criteria: technical merits, commercial potential, financial resources, and project plan and capacity to deliver. Further evaluation will also emphasize on Brunei-Made elements of the proposed product as well as the relevancy to any of the following areas: application tools and platforms, communication, e-learning, financial industry application, government and public sectors, health and wellbeing, social inclusion and community, industrial application, media and entertainment technology, ICT research and development, retail and supply chain management, security, and sustainability and environment technology.

AITI Grant Scheme

AITI’s GRANT was initiated to assist the local ICT companies to further develop their ICT and digital media related products and encourage R&D activities and capabilities in producing local innovative Brunei Made products with commercial potential through Government funding.

Since its inception in 2010, AITI has awarded grant to fourteen local ICT and digital media related businesses with an overall amount of B$1.9 million funded under the National Development Plan. To date, ten recipients have already completed their grant projects where some of these products have been now made readily available in the market. The first GRANT recipient, MARS Enterprise, has successfully developed their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution and has penetrated the overseas market within this region.

Two recipients, John Harith Technology Sdn Bhd and ZimacSilicon Technologies Sdn Bhd, have successfully run their pilot projects on Halal Food Traceability System and iCLID, respectively with the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and the Customs and Immigration Department. Other grant recipients include Crescent Sdn Bhd, Alif Technologies Sdn Bhd, BruGPS Technologies Sdn Bhd, Syarikat Indah Sejahtera Development and Services Sdn Bhd, Ambuyart Animations Company, Cinematicpro Services, Mediahikmah, PHMD Publishing Company, SocialBuzz Advertising, MeSixty Sdn Bhd and Giftbox Enterprise Sdn Bhd.

AITI is pleased to invite all eligible ICT and digital media businesses to apply for the AITI GRANT before the closing on Wednesday, 31 December 2014 by 4.30pm. HIS Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Muntaqim bagged one gold and one bronze medal at the Tutong district Pencak Silat Seni Championships held in conjunction with His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th birthday celebration yesterday.

Gracing the event at the Tutong Sports Complex were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah.

Competing for International School Berakas (ISB), His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Muntaqim took the gold medal in the seni silat mixed freestyle category while the bronze medal came from individual event, the seni silat solo freestyle category.

Speaking to The Brunei Times, the Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam National Silat Association (PERSIB) Pg Hj Jaluddin Pg Hj Md Salleh said that “His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Muntaqim has improved a lot over the past years.”

“His Royal Highness (also) displayed very good sharp movement and he did very well in every category he participated in.

A great success!!

An event that I missed yesterday prior to other commitments but I knew it was gonna be a success. When I posted the promotional poster, it created a lot of hype because it’s something new as it involves obstacles and not just pure jogging or running. This event was organised by the Royal Brunei Armed Forces’ and it was the first of its kind. Nearly 500 participated in the inaugural event of the RBAF’s first Obstacle Course Challenge.

According to the press release in The Brunei Times, Azlina Rambli, a TOTAL employee, just took up jogging six months ago and she even struggled to run a kilometre back then. Now she’s fitter and even won the Female Open category of the said event. Now that is inspiring indeed for other athletes. She encourages everyone that it takes a lot of training and practice to overcome any obstacles and challenges.

Major Sopian has been integral in organising the event and he has a great team to help him and thanks Pg Farisan Pg Metassan for the updates on your Facebook. Hope to get more pictures from you. I believe there will be more similar events to give something back to the community and the feedback have positive as well. Congratulations to the participants and the organiser.

Completion granted

Sundown 21km completed last Saturday

Sundown galore. This is my second attempt in 21km and I have to admit I wasn’t really prepared for the race. Firstly, my training sessions have been woeful to say that least. I hardly train and I only had like 3-5 sessions since February on my run. Bad, right? By the way, I was just 20 mins away from the cut-off time to earn my 21km finisher medal. Phew!!!

Perhaps I was focusing more on tennis and swimming lately in the final month before Sundown which exactly doesn’t do much for my 21km but maybe more into swimming since it improves my fitness slightly.

My timing wasn’t that great either and I had the same mentality as last year which is to complete the 21km. The first 4 kilometer was great because I was on my actual pace 7.15km/hr until I hit the 5km mark and things started to slow down. My pacer Alice was already far ahead of me after the 3km mark. She finished an hour earlier from me and she’s a great runner but she hardly trained.

Between 8km to 17km, I was power walking because of the cramps that I had to endure and the worst was yet to come when I had blisters on my left foot which made running difficult. The final 3km of the route, I managed to jog and increase my pace. I believe it was the hot, cooling cream that I applied after the 17km mark and it helped the cramps to slowly subside.

My friends finished earlier than me too. Well done to Zuraidah for finishing her first ever 21km and she said that it will be first and final registered 21km race *lol* I’m proud of my sister Muji for completing her first ever full marathon 42km. I know this is one of my bucket list but if this is to happen for me, I will have to seriously train myself seriously.

The Sundown Marathon Singapore was another great experience. However, the overall feel and minor things (of logistics) of the event was slightly a let down. I wasn’t happy with the drinking station for a start and some of the routes are dangerous for running as I saw a lady trip due to the uneven path and good luck she didn’t bleed on her face as it scratched on the cement path.

Thank you Sundown Singapore for another experience. Next year again? Probably yes..

Alice, myself, Muji, Zahrin and Badee at the Sundown last Saturday. Only Alice and I ran the half marathon while the rest ran 42km. Well done 😀
