His Majesty launched Energy Week

His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam officially launched the Energy Week 2014 and he was accompanied by Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday at BRIDEX

It was wonderful to see His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei officiating the Energy Week 2014 and visiting all the booths and exhibitors involved in Energy Week 2014. The program went over time because His Majesty spent quite some time at some booths and engaging with the people and students involved in Energy Week 2014 held at the BRIDEX Hall.

It was nice to see His Majesty mingled with the youth and students especially and it shows his concern and interest in our youth. I also realised that His Majesty became more interested if Universiti Brunei Darussalam is involved in the project and also graduates from UBD.

His Majesty quoted the Energy Week was very good and he congratulated the organiser on the event during the short interview by Rachel Thien of The Brunei Times. It was also nice to see His Majesty spent more time during the exhibition despite His Majesty’s busy schedule as he had to fly to Myanmar the same day.

I shall be flooding this post with tons of pictures from the opening of Energy Week 2014. I suggest you drop by BRIDEX this week and for those, jobseekers especially, the best time to come and see what they have to offer at oil and gas as well as maritime.

More updates on Energy Week later. I know I have many information to share so do bear with me. Congratulations to Yang Berhormat Pehin Yasmin and his team from Energy Division at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) on the successful launch and hopefully the whole week will run smoothly.

His Majesty impressed

with Energy Week 2014

Text from Rachel Thien of The Brunei Times. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday said he was pleased to see more locals joining the oil and gas industry.

After launching the Energy Week 2014 at BRIDEX International Conference Centre, Hall 2, Jerudong, the monarch said it was a “very good” sight to see, after speaking to hundreds of Bruneians explaining their roles in contributing to the economy.

His Majesty, who launched the Energy White Paper and Oil and Gas book, later toured both exhibition halls to meet the players in the industry, as well as viewed initiatives by the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (EDPMO) and other agencies to create more jobs.

“The exhibition was very well-established, and I would like to congratulate the Energy Department, His Majesty told The Brunei Times prior to completing the tour.
Throughout the Sultan’s visit, all one could see was a big smile on his face as he interacted with not only industry players, but also mingled with students from various energy clubs. His Majesty even tested one of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP)’s bicycles.

The static bicycle was meant for demonstration purposes to show the monarch how humans could generate power just by cycling.

All eyes and sounds of cheer were directed toward His Majesty when he agreed to give it a try and cycle for about a minute.

This year’s theme for the Energy Week is “Sustainable energy for Brunei Darussalam’s prosperity”.

The Energy White Paper was designed to support Brunei’s Vision 2035, promote career, employment and business opportunities in the energy industry.
It also sets out the targets the oil and gas industry have to meet by 2035, including hiring more Bruneians.

The Brunei Darussalam Oil and Gas Book, on the other hand, is a publication on the role models who encourage more Bruneians to tap into the energy sector. Apart from sharing their experiences, their main call is for youth to join them in contributing to the country’s development.

Jobseekers are encouraged to visit the Energy Week until Saturday, to gain more insight into potential careers. The EDPMO is looking to recruit more than 1,000 individuals at the oil and gas job fair.

Those looking for a job and register at the EDPMO booth, will be able to obtain a copy of the oil and gas book, as well as the chance to interact with the role models in Hall 1.

Over the week, a series of conferences, meetings, a forum and a youth dialogue will take place. The energy exhibition and oil and gas job fair will run concurrently.

MH370 ended in

southern Indian Ocean

Prime Minister Najib Razak officially announced the misfortune of MH 370 at 10pm, Monday 24th of March. Image taken by Edgar Su, Reuters

Prime Minister Najib Razak’s speech last night to announce the heart breaking news of MH370: “This evening I was briefed by representatives from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB). They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data which indicated the northern and southern corridors, has been performing further calculations on the data. Using a type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort, they have been able to shed more light on MH370’s flight path.

Based on their new analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth.

This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.

We will be holding a press conference tomorrow with further details. In the meantime, we wanted to inform you of this new development at the earliest opportunity. We share this information out of a commitment to openness and respect for the families, two principles which have guided this investigation.

Malaysia Airlines have already spoken to the families of the passengers and crew to inform them of this development. For them, the past few weeks have been heartbreaking; I know this news must be harder still. I urge the media to respect their privacy, and to allow them the space they need at this difficult time.”

My heart and my deepest condolences goes to the families and friends of the MH 370 passengers. Now the biggest challenge, apart from the families related, is finding the debris to help further in the investigation of flight MH370. This is such a national tragedy and after 17 days, the mystery has finally concluded. Al-Fatihah.

The Malaysian Citizens Association (PWM) and the Malaysian High Commission collaborated in the initiative of the “Wall of Hope” where well wishers from Brunei can write down their hopes for finding the missing flight of MH 370. The banner is located at The Airport Mall and by night time, the wall page is already full of written and signed messages from members of the public.

DPMM FC faces Tampines Rovers

Clash of the titans tonight

It’s too early for clash of the title contenders match, right? This is an interesting scenario where defending champions Tampines Rovers will be fighting for all the points against another unbeaten side DPMM FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium tonight.

Both DPMM FC and Tampines Rovers have a perfect record with 3 wins out of three. However, DPMM FC enjoy a slight advantage due to a better goal difference and the host have yet to concede a goal in the S*League competition.

This also will be a match for DPMM FC to avenge for last season’s heavy defeat against Tampines with a 6-2 score line. Rodrigo Tosi was one of the players playing for DPMM FC back them and he shared how he wants to forget that memory of the huge loss last year. He’s currently happy with how things are going for DPMM FC and he gelled pretty well with the new import players. He hopes to score in the fourth successive game and more importantly the win for DPMM FC tonight.

“I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game. It will be a great occasion and good test for DPMM FC against a more experienced side,” said Roy O’Donovan, DPMM FC’s marquee player. About scoring his first goals for DPMM FC, he already felt confident on his game and nothing has changed for him. He prioritizes the victory over scoring another goal.

The forward took some time to settle in DPMM FC and broke his scoring duck in the last game with two goals against Home United at Jalan Besar Stadium last week. He shared how they are a few teams that are title contenders including DPMM FC and the best thing for DPMM FC now is to stay focused.

“Experience is just as good as youth and speed. The match will be the clash of the two different styles and hopefully football is the winner,” was the response from O’Donovan when asked about the experience and the aging players of Tampines Rovers.

Training session yesterday for DPMM FC players

Steve Kean remains confident for tonight’s game

Will Rodrigo Tosi score for the fourth successive time?

DPMM FC’s coach Steve Kean doesn’t feel the pressure of facing defending champions Tampines Rovers. “No, football is about respect and you put the competition aside. We just need to keep trying on our own team’s abilities. We still have many steps that we can improved on. We are getting there. We are going on the right direction,” said Kean.

“We are actually competing against ourselves and get to the maximum, then obviously we have to play against our opposition and we can only get better. Last week (game) was better than previous game so we are really confident.”

In other news, DPMM FC management announced that there will be a lucky draw for the upcoming match on Sunday. The grand prizes are one return ticket to Jakarta for one and one return to Kuala Lumpur for one. The prizes are sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines. This draw is only eligible for paying spectators ($5 and $8) and the winners will be announced on the scoreboard at half-time during the match between DPMM FC vs Tampines Rovers FC this Sunday. There will be other consolation prizes as well.

Maju Motors hosts

 Need For Speed

The big blockbuster this weekend – Need For Speed

It’s good to see Maju Motors (Volkswagen Brunei) creating activities for its customers from time to time. Previously they held a weekend carnival and also a meet-the-fan session for the DPMM FC players with the presentation of the grand lucky draw for the Volkswagen Jetta. This morning, Volkswagen Brunei invited its customers to The Mall Cineplex to enjoy a private screening of the much awaited Need for Speed movie which was premiered worldwide recently and more than 300 customers attended the private function catered just for them.

The Need for Speed movie, which saw its worldwide premiere just a few days back, showcases some of the world’s fastest cars like the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, Koenigsegg Agera, Lamborghini Sesto Elemento, McLaren P1, Saleen S7, and a rare GTA Spano as well as the 2015 Ford Mustang GT and a heavily modified 2014 Mustang equipped with a wide-boy kit. Although there were no Volkswagen models featured, but brands like the Bugatti and the Lamborghini are both part of the Volkswagen Group.

The event was held to show gratitude to its customers and also to strengthen ties between the customers and their families along with Maju Motors‘ employees. “2014 is an important year for us. Changes will be made to better serve you and it will all be done to assure your (the customers) satisfaction“, said Maju Motors Sdn Bhd Executive Director, Chan Key Hong. He added, “We are doing this to give you a better ownership experience.“

This was said after an introduction clip which explained “Why only Volkswagen can build a Volkswagen“, which was then followed by a few international advertisements from all around the world which were funny, catchy and entertaining. After the adverts were played, the Need for Speed movie was then featured, which is the highlight of the event.

The customers invited during the exclusive movie screening consisted of those owning any Volkswagen models ranging from the entry-level Polo, its bigger brother the newly launched Vento, all the way to the luxury SUV, Touareg.

Also invited were Volkswagen owners from the local Volkswagen-Audi Group (VAG), who are some of Volkswagen’s strongest supporters and a true example of the Volkswagen culture, made of young professionals and car enthusiasts. They portray the spirit of togetherness, friendship and family traits, this is what Volkswagen is about.

Technology brings us closer

Rita Lim, Principal of Seri Mulia Sarjana International School, in her welcoming remarks

I stumbled across an article yesterday in the Weekend Bulletin as I read the news about Seri Mulia Sarjana International School (SMSIS) introducing their mobile apps exclusive for the SMSIS community. This mobile app is ideal for parents definitely who want to be up-to-date with the events and notifications from the said school. I believe this is the first school in Brunei that uses mobile apps and I won’t be surprise if other schools will follow suit as our society is very engaged when comes to mobile technology.

he school app is a one-stop portal for the parents of SMSIS that puts all school-related information at the parents’ fingertips. Forgotten circulars and missed school activities will now be a thing of the past as the school strives to build stronger parent–school relationship; a vital ingredient in assuring children’s success in school.

Datin Dr Hajah Asmah binti Haji Morni, Acting Director General of Education at the Ministry of Education, together with the founder of Seri Mulia Sarjana International School (SMSIS), Mary Lim were present during the launch. Parents were also invited for the launch of the mobile app.

Thumbs up to SMSIS for having this made possible. This is another useful tool to connect SMSIS with the parents of the students.

Chan Man Ching, Mariah Abdullah, Liyana Yus, Siti Kamaluddin and Fai Zaini (Team Brunei) at the Gala Premiere of Ikal Mayang 2014, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Late post: The voices through women are often unheard. It was interesting to know a film festival entitled “Ikal Mayang: Unspoken Truths” was showcased last weekend in Malaysia. It raises the awareness and sharing the women’s voices through filmmaking to reveal “Unspoken Truths”.

Ikal Mayang 2014 organised a 2-day festival at the Golden Screen Cinemas, in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. The event comprised film screenings, arts installations and music performances in and around the venue.

The biggest highlight of the festival was the premiere of an anthology of six 11-minute short films directed by South East Asian directors which include our own Bruneian Siti Kamaluddin. The other directors are Niramon Ross (Thailand), Shireen Seno (the Philippines), A.D. Chan (Singapore), Nia Dinata (Indonesia) and Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba (Malaysia).

Apart from that, the film festival showcased ten 2-minute clips featuring original stories by local Malaysian personalities and most of them are making their directorial debuts.

Low Ngai Yuen, President of WOMEN:girls, wants to keep the conversation going after the success of the first Ikal Mayang. She hopes that the 2 minute films will give more exposure to the directors regionally, showcasing a more diverse stories and this will also encourage younger directors to take on the challenge.

The line-up of directors for Ikal Mayang: Unspoken Truths include a wide range of women and girls from all ages and backgrounds such as Eja (also known as Siti Shahrizah), Elza Irdalynna, Ineza Roussille, Nora Nabila, Soefira Jaafar, Deborah Henry, Leia Aljoffery, Sharyn Lisa Shufiyan, Junad M. Nor and Melissa Indot; who will be helming their films with the support of Creative Director, Ida Nerina and Executive Producer, Lee Su May. The scripts selected were from a call for submissions from the public held early August 2013.

Ikal Mayang is an initiative under WOMEN:girls produced by Garang Pictures & big EyEs Entertainment to increase the share of women’s voices through filmmaking and screened in conjunction with the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 every year. WOMEN:girls is a non-profit organisation set to create an ideal world where women are empowered to be enablers for aspiring girls to achieve their dreams.

I’m trying to get hold of Siti Kamaluddin short film entitled “Mentari” which features a rising star Liyana Yus who was recently filmed in the upcoming movie called Yasmine, another film directed by Siti Kamaluddin.
