The CHMS Bridge
The new bridge was officially opened this morning. After a few months, it’s ready for public usage.
This morning I covered an interesting ceremony – the official launch of the Chung Hwa Middle School Bridge in Bandar. This is a privately funded bridge with the objective of parents and students of CHMS to cross the road in means of the bridge. The project was initiated by Ong Tiong Oh who is the Chairman of CHMS Board of Directors and he is looking at a bigger picture – to ease the traffic congestion. Do you know that traffic congestion has been a recurring problem especially during lunch hours?
According to inside source, Ong Tiong Oh forked out approximately BND 850,000 for the construction of the bridge alone. If you ask me, that’s a lot of investment and you can even get two residential houses or even three. Now why is the CHMS bridge expensive? This is not just another bridge like you see at other places like the school bridge at SOAS. This bridge has a special design and the materials they used are of high quality.
Ong Tiong Oh engaged Bolton Hennesy Sdn Bhd (Consultant) and Pro Builder (main contractor) and yes, the total was BND 850.000 where the bridge cost BND 770,000 with an additional consultant fee of BND 80,000. The whole project is totally financed by Ong Tiong Oh, who is also the director of Low San Hardware Company (and Toolbox). I’m quite impressed that he stills remembers me as we met once during the opening of Toolbox a few years ago. Amazing memory!!
According to The Brunei Times article, Kho Guik Lan, principal of CHMS Bandar was very excited with the bridge as it will be quite convenient for parents and students to cross the road especially during rush hour.
Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman, Minister of Development, was very thankful to Ong Tiong Oh, for sponsoring the bridge near CHMS. All the bridges in the school in the capital have been identified as prone to congestions and this includes the CHMS bridge. The only difference is that the CHMS bridge is privately sponsored.
The Minister shared that the ministry will still continue to review the aspects of safety involving students and also road users from time to time. He will also monitor schools outside the capital if they would require bridges in the near future.
Now despite the bridge being built, the traffic lights for pedestrians are still active and the public can still use the pedestrian walk to cross the road. It’s soon to say if the majority prefer walk on the bridge (more effort required) or wait for the traffic light to cross the road. I do encourage parents and students to make use of the bridge for safety reasons and smoothen the road congestions during peak hours.
Before I end, I would like to give my full appreciation to Ong Tiong Oh for initiating this project and making it a reality. The idea was highlighted back at the Legislative Council meeting back in 2009 and to see the idea being materialised is awesome indeed. Furthermore, this is totally a generous offer of him to invest almost a million dollars in constructing this bridge. All I can say is “You’re the Man” 😀 and appreciate you remembering my presence a few years back #highlightoftheweek
Note: The high in school fees of CHMS Bandar is not affiliated with the construction of the CHMS bridge. It is fully sponsored by Ong Tiong Oh.

Late post: Brunei Darussalam joined other countries and territories across some 7,000 cities and towns around the world in the World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature’s Earth Hour celebration, which traditionally is symbolically marked by switching off all non-essential lights for an hour.
The Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Complex in the heart of the capital was the focal point for activities and Earth Hour celebration in the country, which kicked off at 8.30pm last Saturday.
Lights from landmarks in the capital including the iconic Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Kampong Ayer Tourism and Cultural Gallery and Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium were dimmed for one hour, signifying the country’s support in the worldwide cause to conserve energy.
Minister of Development, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, was present to officiate Brunei’s Earth Hour celebration at the YSHHB Complex, where he also joined a night-walk around the capital with Brunei Earth Hour Ambassador, Sheikh Jamaluddin Sheikh Mohamed and Brunei Earth Hour supporters.

Lights at the complex were also switched off as hundreds of people gathered at the water fountain area. Candles were also lit to symbolise the event.
Prior to the event, a minute’s moment of silence was held in memory of the crew and passengers of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 tragedy. Now in its eighth year, Earth Hour has evolved into the world’s largest environmental grassroots movement connecting hundreds of millions of people across all seven continents. Sprucing up the event last night was also the appearance of Spider-man, the first Super Hero ambassador for Earth Hour.
In Singapore, the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was on hand to help switch off the lights across Singapore’s signature Marina Bay skyline as part of the global flagship Earth Hour event organised by WWF-Singapore. Text courtesy of Hakim Hayat of Borneo Bulletin.

The 12-member troupe shared what to expect in their two-day show starting tomorrow over a lavish spread of traditional Korean dishes with other invited guests of the ambassador.
“Brunei is the 51st country in the tour. We have collectively staged ‘Nanta’ in more than 200 cities,” said Manager of the Overseas Marketing Team for Nanta Yong-Hee Kim.
“Brunei is a nice and quiet country and we think that they will appreciate the show and be more engaged with the performers,” he added.

The comic musical is derived from the traditional Korean instrumental performance called “Samulnori”.
The show features acrobatics, magic tricks, comedy, pantomime and audience participation. ‘Nanta’ will be performed at Jerudong International School Arts Centre on April 1-2. The showcase celebrates the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Republic of Korea and Brunei. Only ticket holders will be admitted to the 7.30pm shows.

Once you enter Serasa Beach, it won’t be the same as before and this is a very much efficient project that have made praises from the public and mind you, this was just six weeks ago before the beach went through a major facelift.
The launching ceremony took place yesterday, officiated by His Royal Highness The Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah. The tour was led by the Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman.
Also present were the Minister of Finance II, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Rahman Hj Ibrahim, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar and the Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awang Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman.
There were accompanied by the Deputy Ministers and Permanent Secretaries from the relevant ministries.

Six weeks ago, Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance) at the Ministry of Development Awang Haji Muhd Lutfi bin Haji Abdullah as the personal representative of Minister of Development in an interview said the project aimed to further enhance the area which is prone to flooding during heavy rains and high tide. The said project is under the direction of The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Development.
The project’s scope of work includes building a car park, a cycling track, a playground, gazebos, sports facilities, toilet/shower facilities, surau and landscaping. The beach now has an entrance for vehicles along with a separate pathway for pedestrians.
There are also some water recreational sports activities such as parasailing, banana boat and sailing to name a few.
Now let’s hope that the beach can be maintained and be taken care of and we, the community, have the responsibility of taking care of what is being provided and not take things for granted. Let’s not put to waste what the government has offered and delivered.
One thing that worries me is the mindset of the beach goers (well, not all) who are bound to litter at will which will spoil the image of the newly revamped Serasa Recreational Beach.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Ministry of Development, has already installed a signboard with a warning to the culprits. You can be fined BND 1,000 for the first offense and BND 3,000 for the subsequent charges and imprisonment not more than 3 months. So let’s hope the enforcers play their part also to create this awareness for the public.
Congratulations to the Ministry of Development and the relevant stakeholders involved in this project and I will definitely have my visit one of these weekends.
So peeps, the Serasa Beach is officially open to the public and this is such a timely manner because of the current school holidays. Images courtesy of Dean Kassim and Hock Sim.

Check out Acer Liquid smartphones
Jeffrey Lai, Product Manager, Acer Sales and Services (Kuala Lumpur), Ting Meng Hung, Regional Manager, Acer Sales and Services (Sarawak Region), Vincent Pao, General Manager of Concepts Computer and Richard Soo, Branch Manager from Acer Sales and Services showcasing the complete family of the Acer Liquid series
It was good to see Acer representatives from Malaysia, flying in to Brunei to showcase the features of the Acer Liquid smartphones at the Rizqun International Hotel. The size of the Acer Z5 is pretty handy – 5.7 inches wide and it’s pretty light too (150g). This is an ideal phone as a secondary phone and especially when I fly abroad.
You can slot up to 32GB on your microSD. The camera is only 5MP but uses an LED flash. It’s powered by Android Jelly Bean with a dual core processor.
Battery wise, it packs a 2,000mAh battery and it’s not interchangeable like other Acer smartphones. However, you might be impressed with the price – it only costs BND 238. Not bad, right, for a smart phone.
I guess the great thing I saw during the presentation was the Float Apps where you can do multitasking (from 3 to 5 apps) and the Float Caller where your running app won’t be closed when an incoming call is made. The screen will be split and giving you to the option to call or reject the incoming call while your app or game is still running simultaneously. Genius!!
So now you can get them at Concepts Computer (Acer distributor in Brunei) and other authorized resellers such as AV Audio & Video, Boulevard IT, DeeJay, QQ eStore and Yappe Enterprise.
I won’t be talking much about the other high end Acer Liquid S series but you can check out the Acer Liquid S1 and the Acer Liquid S2 on GSM Arena website for their specs and they have good ratings too.

Members of the media and resellers were invited for the product presentation. Zee Yursi of Borneo Bulletin taking down notes and you should read her article today at Borneo Bulletin.
Guess what? Each of us were given an Acer Liquid Z5 smartphone 😀
Lai, you don’t have to win a lucky draw this time :p

The Acer Liquid Z3s smartphone is a dual-core smartphone that is ultra-affordable for everyone’s everyday use.
Weighing in at 115g with a 3.5-inch HVGA (320 x 480) screen, the Acer Liquid Z3s packs a whopping 5MP camera. It is the perfect, unobtrusive but efficient companion that allows users to snap away anywhere, anytime without burning a hole in their pocket!
It also comes with the Acer Active Flip that sees quick access to its home screen once the cover is flipped open and automatically turns off the screen when the cover is closed.
The Acer Liquid Z3s comes with Acer Quick Modes with different UI (User Interface) that works to suit its users – Basic Mode, Senior Mode, Classic Mode and Keypad Mode.
The Acer Liquid Z3s maintains most of the features of its predecessor, the Acer Liquid Z3 that was introduced last year. The size, weight, dual-sim support and other well-loved functionalities are retained in the Acer Liquid Z3s.
Priced at BND158, this compact yet powerful entry smartphone is suitable for people of all ages.
