Congratulations Liaw Lin Ji

Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mah Siew Keong (3rd R) presents the ASEAN Green Award 2015 to BruWILD President Liaw Lin Ji (3rd L) in Kuala Lumpur recently. Image courtesy of Bernama.

This is something I wasn’t aware of or perhaps it’s my level of ignorance to be blamed for. Apparently the local media has highlighted the existence of BruWILD. BruWILD is a registered non-government organisation, formed by a group of trained biologists and conservationists. They dedicate their time and efforts to discovering, investigating, and learning nature’s wonders. Yes, I have heard of other NGOs in Brunei but not so much on BruWILD.

Recently, Liaw Lin Ji the founder of BruWILD, participated in the ASEAN Green Award 2015 and her project won the award. Read more what Bernama wrote in the article a few days ago. Congratulations, Liaw Lin Ji.

From Bernama. Bruneian Liaw Lin Ji, 27, the founder and President of Biodiversity and Natural History Society (BruWILD) was announced the winner of the ASEAN Green Award 2015 which came with USD5,000 ($7,044) cash.

Liaw beat nine other young green technopreneurs and young contributors for the Green Growth Development in the ASEAN region.
BruWILD, promotes the preservation of the natural beauty of Brunei, besides building a sustainable future has more than 20 trained biologist and conservationist working together in educating the public to advocate the importance and functionalities of the ecosystem in their daily lives, she told Bernama after receiving the award.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mah Siew Keong presented the awards.

Liaw, a biologist set up BruWILD in August 2013, and has been providing educational support to local schools, institutions, nature groups and wildlife enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, Chanamon Leknamnarong, the manager of Earth Home Thailand won second place and USD3,000  for promoting ecotourism in her village in Chiangmai.

Through the family’s homestay Maejo Earth Home, Leknamnarong, 29, promotes natural resources construction materials, sustainable living, organic farming to the local community and tourists.

Third place was won by Malaysia’s Dr Sumathi Sethupathi who won USD2,000 for her research in converting solid waste from the fishing industry, such as shrimp, cockle and crab shells to value added products used to remove oily residue in the wastewater generated by the palm oil industry.

Sumathi, 37, who is assistant professor at University of Tunku Abdul Rahman, is now moving on to research on solution for air and noise pollution.

The award, launched in 2011 by the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) and the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET), was to recognise outstanding technopreneurs and contributors to green growth development under the age of 40.

Dato Dr Isham Jaafar, Executive and Medical Director of JPMC presented cheque to Jamary Danggat, the President of Brunei Darussalam Association of the Blind. Also present in this image were Chris Carvalho, Hospital Administrator of JPMC and Ak Danny, Marketing Officer of JPMC
The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) presented a cheque to the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind (BDNAB).

The cheque was presented by Dato Paduka Dr Hj Isham bin Hj Jaafar, Executive and Medical Director of JPMC to Jamary Danggat, BDNAB President. Also in attendance at the cheque presentation were sponsors as well as social media partner, Rano Iskandar of Rano Adidas.

The donation that amounted to BND 1106.20 was collected during the JPMC Charity Car Boot Sale that was held at the Jerudong Park and Country Club on the 9th of November in conjunction with the World Sight Day this year.

According to Ak Danny, Marketing Officer from JPMC, the contribution was collected from registration fees from vendors, activities at the charity car boot sale and donations that were collected at the event.

‘We believe that this donation will benefit greatly towards the Brunei Darussalam National Association of the Blind which is a non-profit organisation towards its objectives to raise awareness related to blindness in the country’, he added.

‘This project has further established a sense of community and strong support that exists between JPMC staff members that were involved. We hope to organise more similar events in the future’, said Ak Danny.

The event in collaboration with the Jerudong Park and Country Club is part of JPMC’s Corporate Social Responsibility program.

The charity project that was held on the 9th November received a very encouraging response where a total of 47 vendors registered for the Charity Car Booth.

It was held in conjunction with the ‘World Sight Day’ that was celebrated on the 12th October this year.

The recent Charity Car Boot Event was supported by Arch Media Advertising, DCON Facilities and Souvenirs and Kwang Wei Advertising and Displays Co as well as Ranoadidas.com as official media partner for the event.

The World sight Day 2014 which brings the theme “No More Avoidable Blindness” is a day that is dedicated to pledging perfect vision for every individual on earth. This event receives global attention every year.

JPMC has a strong focus on sustainability towards health, environment and corporate social responsibilities. It has been featured in countless community-driven activities and programmes from cleaning campaigns to recycling projects, and is constantly looking forward towards ‘what’s next’.

Sh’Mo’ Down

Six men showed off their sleek facial hair at the Sh’Mo’ Down, the first ever moustache competition marking the end of Movember last Sunday.

Event organiser Mas Mohammad Zulfadhly Haji Osman said Movember is celebrated around the world in November to raise awareness about men’s health issues especially prostate and testicular cancer which are rarely discussed in public.

Contestants were required to pledge growing their facial hair for the whole month of November to join the competition.

They were also encouraged to post up photos of their progress with #movemberbn on social media.

Fyad Ali was crowned champion based on the style and features of his moustache and received grooming products from Chaps & Rebels Barbershop.

“Cleanliness and extra supplement for the body is essential,” said Chaps & Rebels Barbershop owner Bung Jae, adding he fully supports the cause to shed more light on the lack of education on men’s health.

Customised T-shirts were also on sale at the event at The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, The Mall. Forty per cent of the profit from the sale will go to the movember.com fund. Text courtesy of Norliha Din of The Brunei Times.

The trek was organised by University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle and she managed to raise £643 for her cause as she needed at least £150 to trek the mountain. The University of Sheffield’s Islamic Circle raised a total of £8,279 in the end. Awesome!! Below are the pictures shared by Azeemah during their trekking journey at Mt. Snowdon.

Volkswagen Customer Day

Yesterday, Maju Motors, the authorised dealer for Volkswagen (VW), held a customer’s day. Lots of Volkswagen customers showed up with their car and posed for the camera. There was also free BBQ food being provided and music for entertainment. This was one way of appreciating Volkswagen customers from Maju Motors for their continuous support. You can view more photos here from their Facebook Page.

The Sh’Mo’ Down

Zul-Fadly (Happy Birthday bro)  with the Jae of Chaps & Rebels

Movember Brunei this year will feature, for the first time ever in Brunei, a ‘Mustache’ competition called The Sh’Mo’ Down. The competition is divided into three categories; the Thickest Mo. the Hippest Mo and the Innovative Mo.

Currently there are a handful of ‘MoBros’ who have registered and it will be very interesting to see the quality of mustaches being ‘groomed’ seriously in Brunei. It’s a growing trend here as the men are slowly becoming more aware of how they present themselves in the public. Registration is still open and all you have to do is email your name and contact number to our email, movemberbrunei@gmail.com

This year we have the support of Chaps & Rebels, a local barber shop owned and run by our own local guys who have paved the way for those seeking the ‘gentleman’ look. An online entrepreneur who sells beard oils on instagram and goes by the ig account, @DreamBeardBWN. Armtirx enterprise who has agreed to print the limited edition MovemberBrunei Tees. Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Brunei for agreeing to become our official venue for the Sh’Mo’ Down.

Movember Brunei also has amazing support from the social media like Facebook and Instagram. The hashtag #movemberbn is getting new feeds everyday. Huge thanks to everyone and anyone on the social media platform who has repost, retweeted and shared all things related to Movember Brunei, Thank you very much!

Growing a mo in Movember is not just a fashion statement but the true message and responsibilty that comes with it. The ‘Mo’ represents the awareness. If someone asks why go through all the trouble of growing a Mo in November? One can say because we care! Its not a trait of a Man to share that they are ill/sick. However, the number of men affected by cancer is as many if not more than women. Movember does not just highlight testicular cancer or prostate cancer, it covers depression as well and men’s health in general. Do it for the grandfathers, fathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, sons, nephews and grandsons who have been fortunately survived or sadly, unfortunately, did not make it through.

If you believe that prevention is better than cure, then go get checked! Grow that mo because you care! We grow it because we want the future generation of men to be confident and be able to remove the stigma that men do not get or rarely get sick. Press release and images courtesy of Zul Fadly.
