The Plus+ Anniversary Charity Run is an event being held in conjunction with World Heart Day and whose mission it is to bring awareness to cardiac diseases and cancer. These illnesses can be silent killers – sometimes showing little-to-no symptoms. Seemingly healthy people can be affected and by the time symptoms occur it may be too late to help. We need to continue to raise awareness and to search for cures.

Plus+ Brunei believes that knowledge about these types of diseases can prevent a number of cases from occurring. Our magazine articles aim to teach how to become heart healthy, increase fitness levels, and decrease risk factors. And because we believe so strongly in this message, we started the Plus+ Anniversary Charity Run in conjunction with World Heart Day to bring awareness to the community.

Today, Plus+ Brunei organised a sharing session – “Hear A Beating Heart”, the untold stories and experiences faced by cardiac patients and their family members at Royal Brunei Recreation Club. The highlight of the talk was Mumtazali Mohd Abdul Aziz who recently made headlines for being the first person in Borneo to have successfully received a Left Ventricle Assisted Device (LVAD) back in 2014. To date there are only four patients in Brunei fitted with the device, which aids the heart in distributing blood to the rest of the body.

The device requires the patient to carry an external battery pack at all times to power the pump, which introduces complications with making sure the environmental conditions suit the device such as making sure it’s protected from the rain and extreme heat. At night, the device is plugged into a machine that powers it while the patient sleeps.

The event was moderated by Chris Woo with three special guests, Mumtazali Mohd Abdul Aziz (a patient), Dr. Sofian, Cardiac Specialist and Dk Hjh Mas Joliwane Pg Hj Tejudin from the Ministry of Education.

Letop Lebaran

Datin Hajah Asmah binti Haji Abdul Rahman with Haji Syed Mohd Yassin bin Haji Syed Anayatullah Shah, the founder of BattlePro Marketing & Management Services, the main organiser of Letop Lebaran

A large number of people flocked to International Convention Centre (ICC) to witness the launching of the ‘Letop Lebaran’ expo, organised by Battle Pro Marketing and Management Services (BattleProMMS).

The exhibition was officially launched by Datin Hajah Asmah binti Haji Abdul Rahman, wife of Minister of Education. More than 80 vendors are taking part in the expo from June 30 until Sunday, July 3, 2016.

Most of items sold at the expo are especially used for the upcoming Hari Raya celebration.

In his welcoming speech, Haji Syed Mohd Yassin bin Haji Syed Anayatullah Shah, the founder of BattleProMarketing & Management Services said, “The event is held to answer His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s call that urged local youths to be involved in business.”

Battle Pro Event has been organising activities since 2014 to help local entrepreneurs.

He said Letop Lebaran provided an opportunity to entrepreneurs from foreign countries to market their brand in Brunei. At the same time, it provides a platform for local entrepreneurs to further develop their business and enhance the nation’s economy. You can follow their live updates on @letoplebaran on Instagram. This is a great shot of Datin Paduka Hjh Adina binti Othman in a go-kart taken by Media Permata. She recently handed prizes for the third series of the Brunei Darussalam Karting Championship which was held at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium last Sunday.

The word got around that both Bruneians Hamsul Sulaiman and Ahmad Fathi Junaidi participated in the recent Swimrun World Championship in Sweden. It’s a duo team effort and this is tougher than the Ironman or Ultramarathon. They will have to run on a tough course that includes slippery rocks and swim to another island. The event is called ÖTILLÖ. However, despite their participation, the Brunei duo didn’t finish the course. Nonetheless it’s awesome for Bruneians to participate in this event and furthermore, both were featured in the Al Jazeera news as they were being interviewed.

TCY MOTORS as the local dealer for the Audi brand will once again organise its annual charity golf event, the 6th Audi quattro Cup Brunei 2015 from October 16 to 18 at the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club, Jerudong. Winners of this year’s Brunei tournament will play at the World Final at the Cabo del Sol Ocean Course in Mexico. Syukri Zulkipli wins competition

Receiving the grand prize on behalf of Syukri Zulkipli was his sister, Ishan Nazurah, who received it from Vincent Goh, Managing Director of Interhouse Company

One of the prizes was a Canon EOS 700D

It was tough time once again for the judges as they had to screen down the photos of the “Moments with Plus+” contest to 9 finalists out of over 300 photos. This morning was the presentation for the Top 10 finalists and this competition was initiated by Plus+ Magazine and supported by Interhouse Company, sole distributor of Canon products. The judges were Vincent Goh of Interhouse Company, Azhani Abu Daniel of Royal Brunei Airlines (RB) and myself.

The winner of the IG contest was Syukri Zulkipli and the grand prize consisted of a Canon EOS 700D sponsored by Interhouse Company and a return ticket to Bali (sponsored by RB), a one month membership at Fitness Zone, 1 year magazine subscription with Plus+ Magazine and Nails & Wax Vouchers. The judges felt that the winning photo best encapsulated the spirit and creativity and it was also came with the Earth Hour theme. I thought the level of technicality was pretty high and the winning photo does give that emotional response to the viewers. Well done, Syukri.

The “Moments with Plus+” Contest was sponsored by Interhouse Company, Royal Brunei Airlines, Aewon Garment and Embroidery, Fitness Zone, LoL Media, EzyPrinting and Nails & Wax.

Here the list of the Top 9 winners.

A single step

Let’s support this cause

Eric Landa, PhD, is the aquatic sports head coach of Brunei and his ambitious goal is to deliver the first ever aquatics medal for Brunei by the 2019 SEA Games. Image taken from The Brunei Times.

Back in old school days in Geelong Grammar School, I had a challenging task and that was achieving a “bronze star/medalion” status for swimming. It’s not a competitive achievement but I realised how important I can play a role whenever I’m in water or underwater. It was part of the school curriculum and it was compulsory as well. It took me a few months as the toughest part of the drill was completing the 400 metres swimming within a given time. Other than that, I was able to float and also rescue swimmers if necessary.

So what are you sharing all these? Because the article by Eric Landa (Aquatic Head Coach) caught my eye. He expressed his personal thoughts yet again on importance of introducing swimming programmes to the local schools in Brunei as part of their Physical Education lessons. His proposal couldn’t come at a better time since we have been notified with the recent tragedies of young people drowning now and then. Perhaps, if they had more knowledge and the know-how when it comes to situations like this, they would have been better equipped and more prepared.

Hence I like the initiative of Eric Landa and be part of the “Learn to Swim MOVEMENT” which supports two ideas 1) Learn to Swim programmes for public schools 2) Learn to Swim programmes for adults which can benefit for their children.

Because of the lack of support he has been receiving from relevant agencies, his article in today’s The Brunei Times sparked the idea of gathering collective opinions from the public to support his notion. Do show your support by sharing his article on BT on your Facebook page or send him a Whatsapp message or email to bruneiswimming(a)hotmail.com

Thank you for the courage to speak up and highlighting the importance of such programmes. I have been in one when I was a student and I understood how important it can be for the future. You have my vote of confidence. for the full article in The Brunei Times, you can click here. All the best, Eric!

This is what he hoped to achieve for the students in public school. It’s never too late. Click image to read full article.
