Louis Loo Kee Lee (left), founder of Plus+ Magazine and Kristy Lim (5th from left), founder of Piccolo Café with representatives from Jerudong Park Medical Centre and staff from Piccolo Café during the Save Life by Giving Blood campaign at Piccolo Café last week.
Late post. It was the fourth time that I have donated blood for a good cause. This was part of the Plus+ Magazine drive collaborating with Piccolo Café and Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC). There were a total of 36 donors though there were many that had to be rejected due to low blood pressure, cholesterol and low haemoglobin levels. Though I have to say kudos for their thoughts and efforts to show up at Piccolo Café to donate.
The event began at 10am and ended at 4pm. Kristy Lim, owner of Piccolo Café was quite overwhelmed with the responses from the public and it was also the first time such event was held at her establishment.
During the blood donation drive, donors were treated to light refreshments courtesy of Piccolo café.
They were also given three complimentary issues of Plus+ magazine as well as special goodies from JPMC. Perhaps another one next year, Kristy? 😀
By the way, Piccolo Café are treating their customers a free additional shot of espresso for all coffee beverages from today until 10 May! Such good news for those who love their extra shot in their cuppa.

Thank you, Kristy, for the opportunity 😀

The Run was another successful event. Over 3,600 participants took part in the yearly charitable event to raise funds for Pusat Ehsan. The event was flagged off by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair bin Hj Abdullah. It was nice to see that 500 special needs participants took part in the event.
It was quite challenging for the organizers to up their numbers from last year’s due to the number of running events in the past weeks or so. Nevertheless, it was still a remarkable number to reach 3,600 participants and perhaps it’s the biggest run to date (in terms of numbers). The funds raised will be used to finance its operational programmes in learning, vocation and rehabilitation for the special needs people under the centre.

The Bokwa session last weekend during Pusat Ehsan Charity Bazaar at the Indoor Stadium
Great participation from the crowd too
Last weekend, Pusat Ehsan launched its annual charity bazaar at the Berakas Indoor Stadium to further provide support for those with special needs.
The charity bazaar, the non-profit and non-government organisation’s 9th installment for this year, carries the theme, “I Care, You Care, We Care” and is open to the public until tomorrow.
During the launching ceremony, Co-Chairman of the charity bazaar’s organising committee and Education Trustee of Pusat Ehsan, Dato Paduka Dr Hj Omar Hj Khalid aid that the strategy for helping those with special needs still requires a multi-pronged approach at all levels of society as worldwide figures for people with disabilities is expected to rise as the population increases.
“Currently around 10 per cent of the total world’s population, or roughly 650 million people, live with a disability; 80 million are children, 400 million live in developing countries and 80 million in Africa. Having a disability places you in the world’s largest minority group,” said Dato Paduka Dr Hj Omar.
He said that it has been reported that the situation of people with disabilities, at a global level, has not greatly improved since the adoption of the World Programme of Action Concerning Disabled Persons in 1982.
“At the national level, Pusat Ehsan joins other charitable organisations to strive and help its special people fulfill their full potential and become functional members of an inclusive society according to the capability of each individual,” he added.
He noted that everyone plays a role in making situations better such as recognising those with special needs as individuals with their unique requirements, recognising the role of parents, and that the public has a role in the welfare of each individual as they are as important and when given a chance they can contribute like other members of society.
“For us at Pusat Ehsan to carry out our tasks effectively, we rely on donations, ranging from individuals, groups or organisations, both government and non-governmental. We realise that help can come in many forms, from donations in the form of cash, volunteerism or material goods,” said Dato Paduka Dr Hj Omar as he expressed his gratitude for the amount of support the organisation has received.
The ceremony also saw a student representative of Pusat Ehsan, Winnie Koay, sharing her positive experience of joining a job attachment at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and of the volunteering she does once a week as a teaching assistant for kindergarten and a library assistant at the Jerudong International School. Additionally, she shared her experiences of winning two bronze medals at the 2nd China-ASEAN Wushu festival in China.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Feby Latip handing over a mock cheque to Pg Datin Hjh Noraini, Executive Operational Trustee of Pusat Ehsan
Hari Raya cheer came early for Pusat Ehsan recently when Brunei Halal made a generous donation to the centre as a gesture of goodwill and care towards the special children in this blessed month of Ramadhan. A total of $2,000 in donations was presented by Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ghanim International Food Corporation Feby Latip to Pg Datin Hjh Noraini, Executive Operational Trustee of Pusat Ehsan who was on hand to receive the contribution.
Students queued up to receive donations in form of ‘green packets’ and products from Brunei Halal representatives. Have you ever heard of Honey Carsmart? You will be surprised that this company has been around for 30 years. Amazing!! And they are known for selling used cars or second hand cars. During the Hari Raya Grand Sale, they will be displaying more than 300 used cars and even motorcycles. By the way, there won’t be any bookings for any of the cars during the Hari Raya Grand Sale promotion. It will be first come, first serve basis so this will be a fair practice for all.
Good news to all visitors that you will be entitled to a lucky draw dip and you can win gifts useful for Hari Raya. But first, you will need to register yourself as a visitor. Two financing institutions will be on duty on the weekend should they want to purchase the car on the spot.

The students of Yippy Tune with their certificates
Yippy Tune celebrated it’s 3rd annual recital on Sunday attracting full capacity crowds for all 6 of it’s sessions on a single day; starting from 11am all the way to 6.30pm.
The audiences were treated with an afternoon of pure musical indulgence of different genres from classical to pop and jazz from performers as young as three and a half years old.
There was a clear distinction between this year’s performance and the year before, both in terms of student participations as well as the range of musical instruments being played at the recital – which includes, the Violin, Piano, Guitars and vocal performances.
“One of the overriding themes chosen by the students to perform this year had been the songs from Frozen’s soundtracks. Clearly, Brunei is not immune from the ‘Frozen’ fever.” According to Ms Deon Ong- the School Director.
Also present to perform at the event were the students from St Andrew’s School, performing group music with their violins in the afternoon. The St Andrew’s Students were coached by Yippy Tune teachers during the term with the onsite music learning program.
The music school has seen a steady growth in business in the last 12 months, as there had been an increase in the realization of the importance of music appreciation and skills amongst the parents. “Music has along been associated with children’s cognitive and social development; I think the parents in Brunei are increasingly realizing this very crucial point.” Which, as a result, “the number of staff has multiplied three-fold.” According to the School Director.
