Cosmo beat IGS

The final score last night

The result was academic to begin with. Both Cosmopolitan College and IGS have qualified for the quarter-finals. However, IGS undefeated streak came to an end when Cosmo scored three goals without reply. Hat-trick hero Md Dhiyaulhak scored in the 14th, 63rd and 90th minute for a comprehensive victory over IGS.

Though having the same points, IGS topped the group with a better goal difference. The semi-finals will be between ITB and Cosmo and the other match will be between defending champion UBD and IGS. Good luck to all the players and well done to the volunteers and the organizing team for making this tournament an overwhelming one. You can follow live updates on @attamwil_universitycup instagram. Audi update

The most important motor sport week of the year for Audi started on Sunday in the Le Mans city center.

A large audience at the Place de la République enjoyed summery temperatures while following technical scrutineering of the race cars for the 24-hour race. All three Audi R18 e-tron quattro went through the technical checks and are thus eligible to start practice beginning on Wednesday and the race. Eight of Audi’s nine racing drivers were visible on the team photo.

Marco Bonanomi was missing, because he was busy competing for a private Audi team in the customer racing program in Belgium where he scored six points.

Audi is aiming for its 14th championship title since entering the legendary Le Mans endurance race in 2000; fans can watch the action live this weekend on Krsital Astro Eurosport channel 814.

Well done, Brandon and team

Maktab Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah was crowned champion of the 19th Brunei Darussalam Inter school Senior Level English Debate Competition yesterday after defeating Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA) four votes to one.

Best speaker for the preliminaries and final Brandon Chin Wei Chun starred from Maktab Duli yesterday, anchoring his team’s position as the opposition to the motion ‘A nation’s first priority should be to invest in renewable energy’.

“We built our team’s case over the fact that although renewable energy was important, it should not be the nation’s first priority, as a country has other important priorities such as education and healthcare,” said the 18-year-old.

Brandon brought foward that renewable energy is only a means to an end.

“Renewable energy itself cannot be developed if education of the people is not made a priority.”

Both teams yesterday were given 90 minutes to prepare their cases before taking to the stage to compete. This was a shift from the traditional competition format which allowed for schools to prepare several days in advance.

The finalists of the debating competition with the guest of honour

Education Officer Adam Mokhtar from Co-Curricular Education Department said the changes are designed to make debating more challenging and in line with the ‘Asian Parliamentary Standard’.

“Over the past few years we have introduced the motions to be debated in an impromptu fashion.”

He added: “Teams are randomly assigned to a topic and the position of either the government, which supports the motion or are drawed as the opposition. They are informed of the motion and position 90 minutes before the match takes place.”

Adam said the shift to impromptu debating would allow Bruneians to be better prepared for international competitions held on a similar standard.

“It also allows the students to think on their feet, forces them to brainstorm rapidly, and to execute and perform under time constraints,” he added.

The Deputy Director of the Institute of Asian Studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam Dr Kathrina DP Hj Md Daud, who also served as Chief Adjudicator yesterday, said that the ‘points of information’ – where competitors are allowed to pose questions when an opposing debater is presenting – needed more engagement from both sides.

“The winning team the judges felt, had better flow in terms of argument overall, linking between one team to next, with a better coherence of understanding issues surrounding the motion in a more holistic fashion,” she said.

To reach the finals, Maktab Duli beat Tutong Sixth Form Centre in the semi-finals while SMSA edged out Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre.

Permanent Secretary (Media and Cabinet) Hj Mohd Rozan Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos was on hand yesterday to deliver the awards to the winning team and the runners up, as well as the best speaker. Text and images courtesy of Aaron Wong of The Brunei Times.

Tivoli from SsangYong

Annison, Sales Manager of SsangYong (T.C.Y. Motors) and Alvin Caro, PR and Advertising Executive of SsangYong (T.C.Y. Motors) unveiling the new SsangYong’s Tivoli at their Kiarong showroom

Check out the Tivoli on Youtube

Repost: When I saw the images sent by T.C.Y. Motors during the sneak preview of the Tivoli, I was like pretty impressed by the overall design. The first thing that came to my mind is that it doesn’t feel or look like a European car. This is the latest edition to the SsangYong family line, the Tivoli. Yes, even the name sounds European in a way. The official launch of this particular model will be in June 2015 but there have been many pre-bookings from the public already even before its release. The media had the privilege to have a close look at the Tivoli – the low spec and the high spec at the SsangYong Kiarong Showroom.

We had a quick test drive on the red colour Tivoli but we haven’t fully tested it. So far it was a good ride and I was even considering this for my next car because I’m more of an SUV person and though it’s smaller than an SUV, it has its sporty feel. There are so many things to love about the Tivoli and I assure you that the Tivoli will be a big hit in Brunei.

One of its strength is the D-cut Steering Wheel. It has a steering wheel with “sporty d-cut” design, highlighting a sporty look with its horizontal bottom line and this will enhance the driving experience with optimal grip. If you go for the hi spec, then you will get a premium leather finish on the steering wheel too.

The seats have been awarded for being “Ergonomic” in Korea. Consisting of dual density pads and Pullmaflex spring system, bonded together to create an award-winning seat. It has earned the Tivoli a reputation for optimal comfort and convenience.

There’s also a Multi Audio System with a 7” inch touchscreen display (hi-spec). You can sync your smartphones via Bluetooth or HDMI.

When it comes to safety, Tivoli ensures passengers’ safety by applying the latest technology and high strength material and it also provides outstanding inner equipment space for outdoor activities. The material of the Tivoli has AHSS (Advanced high strength steel). For your info, AHSS is used for about 40% on the body and “hot press forming” process is used on 10 major areas.

T.C.Y. Motors SsangYong is even giving one special prize – Samsung S6 Edge. All you have to do is register your interest for the Tivoli through their website tivoli.ssangyong-brunei.com or their Facebook Page.

The price tag for the Tivoli is reasonably competitive  and this is the reason why I’m confident this model, Tivoli, will be a big hit in Brunei. Thank you, Annison and Alvin for hosting us yesterday.

Run with Colours 2015

Review of Run with Colours 2015 edited by Faiq of The Brunei Times

An event that I really missed today since I’m outstation. I’m still enjoying my trip in Penang and this morning was the first ever colour run organized by the Brunei Youth Council (MBB) with the support of Armtrix Enterprise. There’s no prize presentation for this particular run and it focuses more on the charity side, aimed at raising funds for the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER Brunei) and also for the council.

The run also coincided with the Sponge Bob run which took place at the Bio-innovation Corridor (Agro tech Park). The Run with Colours had a very awesome turn out and I believe it’s the biggest number so far of all the runs being held in Brunei this year. Around 4,000 participants showed up this morning and of course, the colour gimmick is the first of its kind in Brunei and brings a new sense of novelty especially for runners and social joggers.

Thank you to my friends who contributed some photos for my blog and social media. I do hope to participate in the next colour run in Brunei. Well done to the organizers 😀

Run with Colours

You will be given these sunnies as well as part of the registration. Cool!!

Recently I posted that Brunei is a kingdom of expected runs. Only lately, a new run has been announced and that is the Run with Colours. I’ve seen this gimmick before and I was wondering if it will ever make it to Brunei. Waalaaa, it now has and the bad thing is I won’t be in the country for this event.

The Brunei Youth Council (MBB) is set to welcome all runners with a burst of colours at its charity run scheduled to be held on June 7 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas.

The event’s ‘Run with Colours’ concept is to pelt its participants with vibrant coloured powder at certain checkpoints throughout the route. Also known as the ‘Happiest 5K on the Planet’, the idea originated from the original Color Run that was held in the United States in 2012.

As stated in the press release, the run aims not only to encourage generosity by participating in a charity event but also to encourage Bruneians to emulate liveliness and harmony in a healthy way by spreading positivity through colours.

“We want it to be as exciting as possible since it’s the first of its kind in Brunei,” said Khairunnisa Ash’ari, Head of International Relations of MBB.

On top of that, some members from the organisation will be participating in the colour run by throwing blue-coloured powder unto the runners who pass by at a certain checkpoint during the run.

“The reason is because blue is the colour for autism; so students from Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) will be throwing the powder,” said Tiah Teck Cherng, an intern from Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

There is no age limit in this charity run. Each registered runner is entitled to a T-shirt, a pair of exclusive ‘Run with Colour’ sunglasses, a bib as well as a finisher’s medal! Kit collection can be made from June 4 from 4pm to 8pm until June 8 from 8am to 12pm at the Indoor Stadium.

There will be two routes available; the 3km and the 5km routes. Registration fees are $30 and $35 respectively.

Payment for registration will be from May 11 until May 13 from 4pm until 10pm at the Indoor Stadium as well. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Brunei Youth Council as well as to SMARTER.

It was mentioned that the water truck will be deployed to clear any colour residue on the path and road of the mini fun run. So the public won’t be shocked to see a colourful road after the event. The management also advice to bring extra clothes and towel. A wet tissue or towel would also helped the participants in a way to clean off any colour paste on your skin. There will be more details on this event.

For more information, please email runwithcolours@gmail.com or check out the event’s Instagram @runwithcolours. To sign up for the run please log onto www.heroes.com.bn and click the events icon to register. Source: Michelle Tan of The Brunei Times.

Scalp Trichocare Hairspa

The ingredients and hair paste for the scalp treatment at Scalp Trichocare Hairspa. All the ingredients used natural and contain no preservatives.

Winnie checking her scalp before the treatment

The responses have been favourable. Those who have tried the services at Scalp Trichocare Hairspa will be impressed what they can offer as well as the service they provided. It’s not just a place to get pampered (for head massages) but it’s a great treatment for your scalps whether be it sensitive, oily or dry. My last visit was a few weeks ago as I tried a new system they offered for my sensitive scalp. I always enjoy the experience because I’m a sucker for head pampering.

So what’s special about the System B? It replaces chemical hair dye to avoid cancerous chemical infusion into the scalp. Its post therapy color on hair comes from the nature of the herbs itself. It has more benefits as it improves grey hair, hair loss, post natal hair loss, dandruff, sensitive, bald patches scalp and promotes hair growth.  In combination of the TCM ampoules, system B therapy provides essential nutrients for scalp to have beautiful hair.  It is freshly prepared without any preservatives.

What I enjoy about their service is that they will accommodate to your needs and consult you without any obligation. They focus more on the best optimum therapy for every customer. I know I should have visit their premise more on a regular basis since hair treatment requires multiple visits consistently to see a more favourable result. The growth also depends on the individuals. Some will have results in a short span of time while some might take a while. In most cases, the results can be seen as early as 2 weeks. Do check out some of the testimonials here.

The ingredients used

The paste being applied on the hair.

Another useful treatment from Scalp Trichocare Hairspa is the restoring of your black hair. As we age, some will tend to show signs of grey/white hair. I know I have little signs of that already. With the service they provide, they have seen customers growing new born black hair sprouting after treatment.

Now if you ask me what challenges the customers always face in this situation, it’s mostly self-esteem and confidence or the lack of it. Of course, with a positive attitude, it helps. This is where Scalp Trichocare Hairspa comes in and create that formula to transform your hair that will give your more confidence. Discipline and consistency are important as well for hair treatment. Hence, it’s important to keep your schedule intact if you want to achieve results.

Scalp Trichocare Hairspa is located at Gadong Central, Unit C35, 2nd Floor Block C, same building as The Boxx, Mr. Bakers Cafeteria and Sushi Tei but at the far end. I know parking can be a troublesome but it’s worth the effort especially if you are going for a hairspa.

After the hair paste being applied, your hair will be steamed for 20 minutes or so.

DPMM FC focus on next match

Roy O’Donovan was injured in the last game but kept on playing against Tampines Rovers. He had a minor surgery on his left thumb ligament and now sporting a cast. However, he still insists to play against Geylang International FC this Friday.

Steve Kean’s press conference with the media last Sunday

One on one with Steve Kean and his views of last game against Tampines Rovers where DPMM FC lost 2-1.

On DPMM FC’s performance: “The performance was there and we were trying to win the game. It wasn’t easy to stay at 1-1. We brought Param (Azwan Salleh) who can put a cross in. Sairol was getting very tired and he cramped his calf. So we brought in Adi who is another forward thinking player. I was disappointed with the second goal because when the ball was in the middle of the pitch, we have to get more pressure on the ball because obviously they are gonna shoot and get something on target. That was a disappointing factor.”

On the positive side: “On the positive side, we created enough chances to win. We just have to be more ruthless in front of goal.”

“If we hit the post and not score, this will give the other team a hope that they are still in the game and I think that’s what happen. We just had to get that second goal after conceding the goal in the manner we did.”

On Azwan Ali’s performance: “He prefers that position (attacking mid) that being wide. The defenders didn’t know where he was going and he kept going into the pockets and he can turn and he can dribble. Sometimes he was unlucky but he is an exciting player and he makes things happens whenever on the ball.

On the performance of the referee: “I don’t like to criticize referees. I think it’s the hardest job and I don’t who wants to be a referee. Because we just hope over the course of the season, we can get most of the decisions our way and some are gonna go against you.”

DPMM FC will fly to Singapore tomorrow for their match against Geylang International FC at Bedok Stadium. The match will be played on Friday 28th March. Good luck!!

Financial planning

for IGS students

In a continuing effort to increase financial planning awareness among students in Brunei Darussalam, a team of managers from Baiduri Bank today visited the Kolej IGS in the capital where they presented a talk to some 200 students of the college. The talk emphasized the importance of financial planning to achieve financial success in life and outlined how students can benefit from suitable banking products such as the “4U” Value Pack which was specifically designed with students needs in mind.

Alice Lee, Branch Manager of Baiduri Kiulap Branch gave the welcome remarks followed by a talk on basic financial planning by Siti Aminah, Bancassurance Manager at Baiduri’s Wealth Management Centre. She gave tips on the choices students have today to save money. “Young people should be aware of their financial choices when it comes to planning for their future. This will ease them in their undertakings should they choose to study locally or abroad.”

Members of Baiduri Bank with the participants of the talk at IGS

This was then followed by a talk on the “4U Value Pack” Student Account by Shannon Sikun, Branch Manager of Baiduri Bank’s Muara Branch. Available to students aged between 12 and 29 years old, the package is designed to meet the needs of students studying in Brunei or overseas. It offers ease of banking via electronic channels as well as fee waivers or discounts on services such as overseas ATM cash withdrawals, processing fees on bank reference letters for student visa applications, funds transfers and financing. The talk ended with a quiz and a question and answer session. Upon giving the correct answers, students were given Baiduri merchandise and Starbucks vouchers which the students participated with great enthusiasm.
At the end of the talk, Pg Hajah Fatimah Binti Pg Setia Jaya Pg Hj Momin, CEO of Kolej IGS presented the Baiduri Bank team with a token of appreciation. “The talk definitely gave an insight to what Baiduri has to offer and our students are thrilled to know that there are programmes that will take care of them while they are pursuing their education.”

Divergent review

Divergent. I won’t share much too much but you are more than welcome to listen to our podcast (see soundcloud below) and see what you think. The biggest disappointment for me is the delivery of the movie as we are in the era of “Young Adult” adaptations with the likes of Twilight (glad that was over) and The Hunger Games (much better). Yes, we do have huge flops like The Host, The Mortal Instruments and Beautiful Creatures. However, Divergent have avoided the bombshell pit as it raked in almost US 60 million in the opening weekend.

Anyway, back to the delivery part. Well, the biggest flaw here is the pacing and film editing. It was totally disjointed and there wasn’t a moment I feel any anti-climax or climax for that matter. The other problem is when you already identify the problem, then you will have to endure the next 2 and a half hours of restlessness. The lead roles by Shailene Woodley and Theo James couldn’t bring the movie to better heights. The direction by Neil Burger (Illusionist) didn’t do justice to the best selling novel. I’m hoping for a redeeming sequel since it performed well in the box office but let’s hope these mistakes are being listened to and more improvements in the sequel.

You can check out my popcorn panel’s co-host blog post on Divergent and of course, you can listen to our podcast. Happy listening. Verdict: 5/10 Rottentomatoes 40%

Listen to our podcast review of Divergent and stand a chance to win PS4 console when I post the quiz on IG later on
