One word: Impressive. Congratulations to Dilys Chai and Denise Chai on the opening of your new cafe, Rack & Brew. Love the deco, love the atmosphere and most of all, love the food too. The cakes are amazing too – my personal favourite is the Red Velvet Cake.

The cafe is located above Paddington House of Pancake (Gadong) and the area used to be a boutique store (Deseo) and now the boutique store is located on the 2nd floor, just above Rack & Brew. You can follow @rackandbrew on instagram for updates.

According to Borneo Bulletin, Dilys Chai revealed that Rack & Brew was part of her dissertation project back in the UK. Dilys had some sampling of her desserts at Hua Ho Manggis Mall and the responses were pretty good.

Rack & Brew operates from 11am to 10pm daily at Abdul Razak Complex in Gadong. I’m definitely dining there next time.

Celerio gets an A+ with Iconia

Associates from Concepts Computer and Boustead Sdn Bhd (Suzuki) holding an ACER Iconia Tab 8W. For those interested to buy a Suzuki Celerio A+, it now comes with the Acer tablet but for a limited time only.

The MoU signing last Wednesday at Concepts Computer conference room

This is the first time that Concepts Computer collaborated with Boustead Sdn Bhd in a joint promotion. For those interested in purchasing a Suzuki Celerio A+ from Boustead, then you will be entitled to receive a brand new Acer Iconia Tab 8W (from Concepts Computer).

This is another way to reward their loyal customers by giving an instant gift and also boost the image of both Boustead and Concepts Computer.

Just like the Acer Iconia Tab 8W, the Suzuki Celerio A+ has quality, reliability, durability and most important, affordability.

To the Vincent Pao, General Manager of Concepts Computer, this is a win-win situation for both companies and the joint promotion will be able also to attract new customers.

So what can you expect from a Suzuki Celerio A+? It has a 1.0 litre engine, comes in either MT or CVT, good storage space and also fuel efficient.

As for the Acer Iconia Tab 8W, it’s the top-selling tablet powered by Windows 8.1 and comes with Office 365 (one year subscription) and has a long battery life and one year warranty.

This promotion will start with immediate effect and is valid until December 31. Information about the latest joint promotion can be obtained at any Suzuki showroom or Concepts Computer showroom.

Suzuki will also be holding a roadshow at Citis Square from September 24 to 26, welcoming the public to stop by and try their luck with their ‘lucky dip’ activity.

The story so far

Summer movies so far

Review of Terminator: Genisys starring Rano Iskandar with his regular co-host @delgoh and guest Nee Khern

So we are at the half-way mark of Summer movies and it has been a spectacular trip for the past two months (May and June movies). As compared to last year’s summer movies, this is way better. Last year, we have the likes of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Guardians of the Galaxy, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Maleficent, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla. So on average, not all were above average with my disappointments of Age of Extinction, Maleficent and Spidey. The one that I love the most for last year’s summer movies was Dan of the Planet of the Apes (I watched it three times).

So how did it far this summer? We have two months to go but I’m very excited to share about the first half of it. I would say that my predictions with Del Goh for the top summer box office are off the mark because we predicted that no movies will come close to Avengers: Age of Ultron. Just last weekend, Jurassic World overtook Age of Ultron and now currently stands USD 50 million more than the Avengers’ sequel. From the looks of it, JW will have the chance to beat AOU in the month or so. We shall see.

In terms of value and entertainment, yes, it’s slightly better than 2014. My best pick so far is Mad Max: Fury Road and I caught this 3 times (normal screen, 3D and IMAX 3D). Woohoo. I just can’t wait for the blu-ray. Movies like Pitch Perfect 2, Avengers, Jurassic World and Spy have been great. There are some passable summer movies such as San Andreas and maybe, just maybe The Minions. What I couldn’t wait is Inside Out which will only be available in mid August :/ *shrugs* The few movies that haven’t struck my chord is Tomorrowland.

I caught Arnold’s latest flick – Terminator Genisys. It ain’t a classic but it will still keep you entertained. I didn’t like Terminator: Rise of the Machines so I’m happy that I came out of the cinema, feeling contented but nothing more. Do listen to my podcast review or just click on the Terminator image above. I just hope that Magic Mike XXL will outpaced Terminator Genisys in the summer box office so I can win my wager against Del Goh 😀

There are still a few more movies that I’m looking forward to – Inside Out, Fantastic Four, Ant-Man, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Ted 2, Trainwreck and Pixels.

Do watch out for our best summer movies of 2015 in August. For now, enjoy the magic of movies.

’Building a Nation’

Click image to find out more from Butra HeidelbergCement

Butra HeidelbergCement, best known for their resources of providing cement to the Sultanate, has done more than its reputation proceeds. ‘Building A Nation’ is their corporate social responsibility initiative focusing on developing various aspects and levels of the nation with the mutual goal to succeed as a country. A company centered on sourcing a build, made enough sense for them to help others build their hopes, dreams and ambitions.

A fraction of this movement is devoted towards ‘Building Hope’, efforts dedicated to helping the less-fortunate society by addressing and aiding their needs for sustainable living. Dated back to February 2014, Butra HeidelbergCement was on the search of giving hope to those in need by refurbishing the core of basic necessities; a sheltering home.

Butra HeidelbergCement invited those in need with a chance to have their homes restored and repaired, a kind gesture by the company with hopes of ensuring a blissful Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. This venture was in collaboration with the Community Development Department (JAPEM) under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) in expanding the reach for the initiative and assisting those in dire need of help.

From February, the collaborating delegation began investigating the applicants’ homes up until May when they narrowed down the list to four candidates for the project, two living in Brunei-Muara District and another two in Tutong District. A month long process of reconstruction began simultaneously for all four homes and the team addressed any faults and troubles the candidates previously faced in their distressed homesteads. By June, the candidates were able to enjoy the comforts of their refreshed homes in time for the fasting month of Ramadhan as well as the preparations for the festive season.

The success of the project proved enough for its continued existence as Butra HeidelbergCement has set their sights on sequel venture in the future, holding on to the values and objectives of ‘Building A Nation’.

Building A Nation comprises of other initiatives diversifying its reach towards accomplishing various other goals

Building Champion centers the spotlight on Brunei’s very own Wushu team, sponsored for their achievements in winning gold for the South East Asia (SEA) Games.

Building Careers opens more opportunities for locals in exploring their potential while Building Sustainability channels its inner greenery by championing the needs of our environment for
future generations.

Women of Brunei

Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Hjh Adina (front, 4th L) with authors of ‘Women of Brunei – Inspiring Life Stories’ Nicola Lynskey (3rd L) and Cecile Castilla (5th L), and the Bruneian women featured in the book. Images courtesy of Amanda Yap of The Brunei Times.

The book took a while to complete but the hurdle is over. Co-authors French Cécile Castilla & British Nicola Lynskey have invested their times with their interviews and writing up articles for the compilation of 21 women of Brunei entitled Women of Brunei. The purpose of this publication is to inspire the younger generation of Brunei women and even those challenging moments can be dealt with.

I caught up with Cécile Castilla over a book signing outside Best Eastern Times Square a few days ago. I’ve known her for quite a while and in those days, she was editor-in-chief for Dua Minggu and she was also in the mainstream media for 10 years back in France, focusing more into female magazine. Back in 2006, she was based in Balikpapan and she was involved with an expat magazine. You can see that she has this urge to write and share her findings to others and that is one great way of contribution.

To her, this is a her second book that relates to women. She finds many rewarding values in interviewing and writing her findings. The publication won’t be possible without the help of their sponsors. Her purpose of this project is to understand women in Brunei Darussalam and she can see the difference between the women in Brunei and the women in France. She found out that even the community in Brunei is friendly and family oriented despite being a tiny country.

You can find the book “Women of Brunei – Inspiring Life Stories”, a 140-page coffee-table book and it is published by local visual and graphic design firm Pentagram Sdn Bhd. It is selling for $30 at all Best Eastern book stores throughout the country, as well as the Crimson Square at the Empire Hotel & Country Club in Jerudong.

Twenty per cent of all sales will be donated to charity while 10 per cent will go to the Council of Women Brunei Darussalam.

Another 10 per cent will also be donated to ALAF (Advocating Life-long Learning for an Aspiring Future), the charitable project under the book’s gold sponsor, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD).

Zul Abdul Rahman, Marketing Executive of Concepts Computer, speaking to the media said, “We first introduced the Concepts Computer membership pendrives in early 2013 and it’s been a huge success with thousands registering during the initial one year period.” He continued, “And to thank our faithful and long-standing customers, what better than to offer big savings in our great weekly deals for some of our more popular name-brand products.”

Zul also noted that to participate in these weekly specials is simple, all any of our customers have to do is to visit Concepts Computer’s showroom in Kiulap and find out what the exclusive weekly ten items on offer are, and to take part in the special deals, customers are to show their Concepts Computer membership pendrives as ID and proof of membership when they are about to make their purchase, just as simple as that.

Zul continued, ”And not to worry, for our customers who did not register for their Concepts Computer membership pendrives when the registration period was open, this is their chance. We will be opening membership registration again during this special period.” He also added, “The Concepts Computer membership pendrive will have dual roles, as a 4GB pendrive that’s able to hold many documents, and as a membership ID, making it much more useful compared to regular member cards.”

The Concepts Computer membership pendrives are also small and sleek, water-proof and shock-proof, works easily as a plug-and-play device, and great as gifts for friends and family.
