The ritual handshake before the match
What a match!!! Unfortunately, DPMM FC failed to gain any points and surrendered to their first defeat of the season to defending champions Tampines Rovers with a 2-1 score line. What billed to be the clash of the titans early into the season, it was difficult to predict the winner prior to the match with both teams having a perfect start to the season with three consecutive wins.
DPMM FC started well in the first half and they could have bagged a few goals if it wasn’t for the poor finishing of DPMM FC in the final third. Roberto Alviz scored his first goal for the club after a well placed pass by Tosi in the 6th minute. The home team were dominant in most periods of the first half and it took a while for Tampines Rovers to settle in. DPMM FC’s marquee signing player Roy O’Donovan had a couple of chances in the first half but failed to find the net.
The visitors did create some chances but the defence was well marshalled by Boris Raspudic and Shahrulrizal while Wardun Yussof had one important save to make from Tampines midfielder Shahdan Sulaiman’s effort.
One player that caught my eye was Azwan Ali who seemed to have settled in quite well in his left attacking side role. He had many possession and caused a few problems whenever going forward. I see a bright future for the former Indera FC player and with more games, he will gain more experience and confidence. He was involved in most of the attacking opportunities but his team mates couldn’t convert the chances.
The beginning of the second half didn’t have the same pace as the first but it was Tampines who were hungrier of the two. The visitors finally managed to break DPMM FC’s defence with a goal by Miljan Mrdakovic in the 56th minutes. It was also DPMM FC’s first goal that they conceded in the season after three clean sheets. The Croatian took his chance, firing a low shot after DPMM FC failed to defend a simple attacking play from Tampines off a throw in.
The goal woke up DPMM FC and the home team started to pour in attacks. Captain Rosmin Kamis had his effort hit the post and to safety. O’Donovan also suffered the same fate when his open scoring opportunity saved by the post to the disappointment of the crowd. DPMM FC could have scored the winner but it wasn’t their luck with those two chances gone begging.
Rodrigo Tosi ,who had been scoring in every DPMM FC match, failed to find the net but he was instrumental in most of DPMM FC’s attacks. One of his efforts almost found the net when his intended cross went across the face of the goal only for O’Donovan to hit the side netting from close range.
I would have thought DPMM FC had the upper hand when Tampines Rovers had all their substitutes with 30 minutes remaining. I have to salute to Tampines Rovers defender Abdil Qaiyyim who stayed on the pitch till the end and fought off every challenge when DPMM FC attacked. He suffered a nasty fall after clashing with Subhi in the 62nd minute and Tampines had already used all their substitutes. However, he came back to the pitch despite limping occasionally and held the defence till the end.
Tampines Rovers deserved their second goal after a sloppy defending again by DPMM FC. Shahdan of Tampines scored late in the game in 88th minute with a low driving shot after DPMM FC failed to clear the ball. The visitors early had two great opportunities. However, Wardun had two great saves from Miljan Mrdakovic in a matter of three minutes. Despite Tampines having lesser scoring opportunities, they made it count and for the fifth time, DPMM FC failed to beat Tampines Rovers at their home ground.
DPMM FC may have lost the battle but on the positive note, they played with conviction and maturity on the field and based on their performance last night, they deserved more than a draw. DPMM FC now will focus on their next match ahead against Geylang International FC at Bedok Stadium this Friday. DPMM FC 1 (Roberto Alviz) Tampines Rovers 2 (Miljan Mrdakovic, Shahdan Sulaiman)

Clash of the titans tonight
It’s too early for clash of the title contenders match, right? This is an interesting scenario where defending champions Tampines Rovers will be fighting for all the points against another unbeaten side DPMM FC at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium tonight.
Both DPMM FC and Tampines Rovers have a perfect record with 3 wins out of three. However, DPMM FC enjoy a slight advantage due to a better goal difference and the host have yet to concede a goal in the S*League competition.
This also will be a match for DPMM FC to avenge for last season’s heavy defeat against Tampines with a 6-2 score line. Rodrigo Tosi was one of the players playing for DPMM FC back them and he shared how he wants to forget that memory of the huge loss last year. He’s currently happy with how things are going for DPMM FC and he gelled pretty well with the new import players. He hopes to score in the fourth successive game and more importantly the win for DPMM FC tonight.
“I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game. It will be a great occasion and good test for DPMM FC against a more experienced side,” said Roy O’Donovan, DPMM FC’s marquee player. About scoring his first goals for DPMM FC, he already felt confident on his game and nothing has changed for him. He prioritizes the victory over scoring another goal.
The forward took some time to settle in DPMM FC and broke his scoring duck in the last game with two goals against Home United at Jalan Besar Stadium last week. He shared how they are a few teams that are title contenders including DPMM FC and the best thing for DPMM FC now is to stay focused.
“Experience is just as good as youth and speed. The match will be the clash of the two different styles and hopefully football is the winner,” was the response from O’Donovan when asked about the experience and the aging players of Tampines Rovers.

Steve Kean remains confident for tonight’s game
Will Rodrigo Tosi score for the fourth successive time?
DPMM FC’s coach Steve Kean doesn’t feel the pressure of facing defending champions Tampines Rovers. “No, football is about respect and you put the competition aside. We just need to keep trying on our own team’s abilities. We still have many steps that we can improved on. We are getting there. We are going on the right direction,” said Kean.
“We are actually competing against ourselves and get to the maximum, then obviously we have to play against our opposition and we can only get better. Last week (game) was better than previous game so we are really confident.”
In other news, DPMM FC management announced that there will be a lucky draw for the upcoming match on Sunday. The grand prizes are one return ticket to Jakarta for one and one return to Kuala Lumpur for one. The prizes are sponsored by Royal Brunei Airlines. This draw is only eligible for paying spectators ($5 and $8) and the winners will be announced on the scoreboard at half-time during the match between DPMM FC vs Tampines Rovers FC this Sunday. There will be other consolation prizes as well.
