Refereeing course to conclude

During the launch of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referee Preparatory Course for the AFC Under-14 Regional Festival of Football

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referee Preparatory Course for the AFC Under-14 Regional Festival of Football was launched at the National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) headquarters in Berakas earlier this week.
Fourteen young referees from Brunei, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are taking part in the five-day programme that will conclude today.

The course aims to prepare and assess the participating referees for the festival that will be held at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports and the Berakas Sports Complex from August 18-22.

The course will be conducted by two referee instructors; Mohammad Rodzali Yacob and Michael Hanania.

NFABD General Secretary Hj Muhd Zamri Dato Paduka Hj Hamdani in his welcoming speech highlighted the importance of having the course for the upcoming festival.

“I understand that prior to the AFC Festival, an AFC Referee Preparatory Course is to be conducted first whereby the referees are from the participating countries,” said Hj Muhd Zamri.

“I believe this course will be beneficial to all participating referees as part of their individual development as well as for the development to their respective countries.

Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam are the among the countries that will compete in the tournament.

Among the aims of the festival are to provide a continuous player development pathway from the grassroots at the school level to the elite level and ensure a smooth transition for elite players to the national team.

Sanctioned by AFC, the festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and other related government agencies.

Admission is free and a lucky draw will be held during the event.

Total Hari Raya Open House

Yves Grosjean, General Manager of Total E&P Borneo B.V. in green attire hosting guests at Total Hari Raya Open House

Recently Total E&P Borneo BV celebrated their Hari Raya Open House for their clients and guests. It has become an annual event as they host a corporate open house. The host was Yves Grosjean, General Manager of Total E&P Borneo B.V.

Total has been have very busy this year alone. Earlier in the year, Total has achieved 15 years in recording zero Loss Time Injury (LTI) and they have operated at least millions of man-hours in several operation sites, drilling campaigns, repair and modification operations, oil platform operations, logistical operations – including the use of helicopters – and other kinds of operation. Good job to the staff and contractors of Total.

Also recently last month, Total launched the jacket of the third platform of the Maharaja Lela Jamalulalam (MLJ-3) field. Jacket I am referring to is a steel frame fixed to the seabed, forming the support structure of an oil production platform. . The jacket was on the Muara Yard in just one year. It is 100% Brunei made and it required around 500 000 man hours of work. Great work by Petrovietnam Technical Services of Vietnam (PTSC M&C) with the assistance of Sahid, Adinin, Megalift, Teca, Velosi and Petrokon.

Keep up the great work, Total.

The nasi katok effect

The shop that I frequent in Singapore – Toy Outpost at Plaza Singapura. Image taken from their website.

That’s how it is. When you create opportunities and there is a huge demand, then it’s ideal to have new entrants into the market. I have been noticing the late surge of cube stores in Brunei. I saw this concept at Singapore many years ago at Plaza Singapura and I thought it is such a great way to sell items without dealing with high operating costs. I frequent there a lot because they mostly sell figurines and mini-figures (lego) and WWE products. They are very focused in their theme so I know I won’t be wasting my time and most of the items on display would relate to me. Of course, I also like to hunt for novelty products.

Now Brunei is more like an untapped market and we are beginning to enjoy the concept of window shopping at cube stores. This can help to promote small businesses or SMEs to start off their business on a smaller scale and test the market. Those who make a side business through means of social media will find this very handy indeed.

The concept cube store that was the so called pioneer was SCG Enterprise. It started in Seri Q-Lap Mall and now expanded its services at Citis Square. Now malls in Brunei are showing similar trends of cube stores. Well, it’s a good thing for the owners of the cube stores because it’s also a good income for them to sustain in maintaining cube stores and it’s more of a perpetual income on the basis of subletting the cube spaces.

Let’s just hope that we won’t have too many of it as our market is pretty small. In my opinion, the biggest advantage for cube store owners is location and maybe on branding presence. The latest one I saw was at The Mall Cineplex and it has a very clean, fresh concept. It’s very ideal especially for movie goers who would spare some time to shop before catching a movie.

Good luck to all the SMEs and who knows one day I might need a cube space of my own 😀

As part of their Ramadhan activities, Total E&P Borneo B.V. Now, she is a single mother with five children. Her family currently resides at her in-law’s house. The next draw

Times Square Shopping Centre is having its next lucky draw prize presentation of the 5th Lucky draw campaign on Sunday, 9th August 2015 at 2.00pm. This would be the third draw of the 5thLucky draw campaign in 2015.

In order to join, customers may shop, dine, stay in Times hotel or watch movies at Times Cineplex (Times Square branch) then submit the receipts of the day to the lucky draw counter located in front of Dee Jay.

There are no minimum purchases required and all customers may participate as many times as they wish. This however, does not apply for purchases made at the food court. 20 daily winners will be contacted everyday where these winners are then shortlisted to join the lucky draw prize presentation.

So there are plenty of reasons to head to Times Square and be part of the lucky draw. You have at least a month from now to shop and dine. I’ve been dining and watching movies on many occasions. Perhaps a better time to put my name in the draw 😀

Team Brunei making more waves

Adi Daini, Eden Chiam, Elizabeth Sim, Bridget Ang, Ruby Chong, Shian Li Esther Chiam and Norhidayat Hj Ahim arriving from Singapore last Friday

A very historic moment for Brunei. Yasmine making headlines on the front page recently, for its North America release this year. DPMM FC recently brought back another trophy from Singapore which was the Singapore League Cup. The other thing was our Brunei Team who competed in Los Angeles for the World Championship of Performing Arts which is also branded as the Olympics for artists.

Team Brunei achieved a higher medal count compared to last year with 38 medals overall. They collected 12 gold medals, 13 silver medals and 13 bronze medals. The biggest winner was Shian Li Esther Chiam who is just 15 years old. She won the Junior Grand World Champion Instrumental Award and also collecting 6 six gold medals along the way. Awesome indeed!!

She was over the moon when she received the prize during the finals and she gave a word of encouragement to all passionate singers and performers that we need to believe in ourselves and work hard towards that goal. She was grateful to be part of the Brunei Team and she also made new friends globally and the great thing about music is that it unites every walks of life, regardless of age and race. She shared that there are so many opportunities for us and they are untapped.

Her younger sister Eden Chiam earned an Industry Award and also earned one gold medal, two silver medals and two bronze medals and she only had weeks to prepare for the event. So that’s not pretty bad for an achievement. I have mentioned previously in my post how team Brunei has made it big at WCOPA finals in Los Angeles, considering they only sent 9 representatives as compared to the aplenty from different countries. Having 5 semi-finalists and 3 finalists are considered “over-achievements” as they are plenty of talents out there worldwide.

Maria Grace Koh and Joanna Kwan are still outstation and didn’t join the entourage upon arrival at the Brunei International Airport. Both are finalists for the WCOPA finals and I’m proud of their achievements.

Elizabeth Sim who dreamt of Hollywood was very happy of her achievements and enjoyed every moment. She won Senior Acting Drama category and also earned 5 medals along the way. Ruby Chong, earned herself two medals and an Industry Award while Bridget Ang earned two medals. Norhidayat Hj Ahim earned 5 medals while Adi Daini earned 3 medals.

They will be having a Brunei WCOPA showcase this coming August at the Jerudong Amphitheater and it will be on the 23rd August 2014. For updates, you can follow them @officialwcopabrunei on instagram for updates.

Skechers in KB

Check out the promotion during Ramadhan
In less than a year, Skechers Brunei have delivered more than expected. Two weeks ago, they opened their 3rd branch in Kuala Belait after opening one at Kiulap and Seria. The third outlet has been a successful one as you will be surprised that Skechers is a strong brand nation wide. Opening one in KB shows the demand of Skechers in general that patrons are aware of its brand and lifestyle it portrays. Let’s not forget that Skechers are not only known for their imaginative designs but its functionality.

Brand Manager Terence Han also caught by surprise of the outlet’s overwhelming response in KB. For your info, the location of the KB outlet is in the middle town of KB town along Jalan Pretty. You definitely won’t miss it and furthermore, Skechers looks colourful and catchy from a distance.

The great thing about its location is that it is able to attract customers from the border (Miri).

So do expect footwear for men, women and children and who knows I might end up wearing a casual one. You will be amazed that there are estimate of 2,000 shoes and stocks just keep coming because of the good demand.

Skechers Brunei are currently having a new promotion during the month of Ramadhan, offering members a 20 per cent discount on regular items instead of the normal 15 per cent discount. Membership is free of cost and discounts apply immediately upon purchase.

According to Yves Grosjean, General Manager of Total E&P Borneo B.V, “Starting early 2016, the Project will produce the new gas and condensate resources discovered by exploration wells ML-5 and ML-6 drilled in 2010. These two wells were the deepest ever drilled in Brunei and the reservoirs to be produced are high pressure/high temperature. With the new wells from ML South it is anticipated that field production will be sustained at the new plateau level of 5Mm3/d beyond 2025, with the contribution of identified upsides. This new production level represents an increase of 35% compared to the production rate under the initial gas sales contract to BLNG that expired in 2013 and has now been renewed until 2033.”

The MLS Project is the largest joint venture in the block, spearheaded by Total E&P Borneo B.V. with  Petroleum Brunei and Shell Deepwater Borneo among the shareholders.

Trash to Treasure Campaign (T3)

The Trash to Treasure Campaign today saw a big turnout at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas, exceeding its target of 200kg of recyclables.

With some 20 registrations from today alone, the T3 campaign successfully collected 546kg of trash from members of the public. The trash collected comprised 488kg of paper, 27kg of plastic, 8kg of aluminium, 2kg of metals and 21kg of electronic wastes.

The campaign, targeted at households and businesses, also generated the interest of a number of schools to participate in the campaign. “Our aim is to encourage people to recycle at home and at work. We are taking small steps to instill this positive habit,” said Asia Inc Forum’s conference manager, Nanette Ramos.

Through the T3 Campaign, Asia Inc Forum hopes to extend the habit of recycling from schools to households and businesses. Schools that are interested to participate in the campaign are encouraged to get their students to register their households, Ramos said.

Today’s T3 campaign marked the first collection, with its second and final collection scheduled to take place on August 10 at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas. The campaign was held in conjunction with the National Environment Conference, to promote environmentally-conscious lifestyle and build a sustainable living environment in Brunei.

The highest recyclers from each category (household and business) will receive prizes during the National Environment Conference on 13th August 2014. All the proceeds raised from the recycling campaign will be donated to participating NGOs to fund for their environmental projects.

The T3 Campaign is a joint initiative between Asia Inc Forum, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) of the Ministry of Development, and Daikyo Environmental Recycling together with the conference partners; with TOTAL E&P Borneo B.V., Butra Heidelberg Cement, Baiduri Bank, and Brunei Press.
