The Interview with David Carden

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday consented to receive in audience His Excellency William E. Todd, the United States Ambassador to Cambodia (2nd right) and His Excellency David L. Carden (3rd right) the United States Ambassador to ASEAN. His Excellency William E. Todd and His Excellency David L. Carden are currently in Brunei Darussalam for three days visit. Image taken from Borneo Bulletin’s website

This morning I had the privilege with the other local media in having an audience with His Excellency David L. Carden, the U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN at the US Embassy. He touched on topics such as environment, health, food security, pandemic, youth, deforestation, human trafficking, social media and basically his duty as a U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN. He has been to Brunei Darussalam on several occasions so he is no stranger to our country and his knowledge on ASEAN is very rich indeed.

For your information, the role was U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN was initiated by President Barack Obama who called for the establishment of a permanent U.S. Mission to ASEAN. In late March 2011, Ambassador David L. Carden was sworn in as the United States’ first resident Ambassador to ASEAN.

Their mission statement – the U.S. Mission to ASEAN works with ASEAN and all of its members-states to advance the development of a strong and integrated Southeast Asian community that is secure, prosperous and democratic.

Carden believes that his role will encourage the people of ASEAN to initiate and engage in healthy and constructive discussions in helping one another in the region. For instance, a Bruneian might talk on corruption or human trafficking that might be an issue in another country of ASEAN.

He recalled back the era of SARS and this can be linked back to deforestation and animal trafficking. Hence in the likelihood of new pandemic situation, U.S. Mission to ASEAN will be involved for pandemic readiness and get in touch with as many relevant experts to counter the supposedly situation.

Quratul-Ain Bandial of The Brunei Times, Aziz Idris of Borneo Bulletin, His Excellency David Carden, Delwin Keasberry of @Bruneitweet and Rano Iskandar

With Brunei being a Chair for ASEAN 2013, His Excellency said that Brunei still have issues to deal with and talk about and Brunei can be a leader on some issues. Topics such youth empowerment, energy, biodiversity and education are some that Brunei can lead on and these can be broadly communicated outside the region.

Carden also felt that his role was not purely being an Ambassador to ASEAN but also to the U.S. and it’s important that the U.S. knows what’s happening in ASEAN and vice-versa and Carden’s role is create that connectivity to the U.S as well within the ASEAN. We shouldn’t just be focusing on the issue of the South China Sea situation. There are other engaging issues such as the pandemic, deforestation or education issues.

Carden campaigned for the youth to be more engaged with ASEAN related matters because they will be the future of ASEAN and they will be more ready to be hands on with the issues concerning the region.

When asked about the recent nuclear test from North Korea, the Ambassador said that there’s no official statement from ASEAN but he is hopefully that they will. He thinks that everyone recognises the destabilising impact on the (nuclear) tests.

To share your thoughts on any issues, you can follow them on U.S. Mission to ASEAN Facebook Page and also on their twitter account @USMission2ASEAN and with Brunei chairing the ASEAN Summit this year, it will be good to see more Bruneians engaged in discussions through means of social media.

Pistorius faces murder charge?

Reeva Steenkamp with Oscar Pistorius

This is such a shock!!! Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been an inspiration for many for being the first double amputee Olympian to participate in the Olympics and he garnered the nickname “Blade Runner”. Yesterday Pistorius was arrested and brought to court today for the fatal shooting of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. As of now, I have been tuning in CNN for updates and I’m still shocked about the incident.

The development of the stories are still unclear but it was cited that he had mistaken his girlfriend for an intruder. It was also reported that they have been previous incidents at his home too. So let’s just wait to see how the story unfolds. Condolences to the families of Reeva Steenkamp.

CNY at Concepts Computer

Concepts Computer held an Open House this morning for their guests and customers, staff and friends at their Kiulap showroom. Hosting the Open House were Mr. and Mrs Pao and according to Vincent Pao, the General Manager of Concepts Computer, “In my point of view, the IT retail business in Brunei is more challenging these days with savvy costumers using internet and other sources to keep up to date regarding IT technological advances. So we need to focus more on providing better services for our customers.”

“When it comes to Concepts Computer, I always lead with a simple statement – We must do a good job!,” ended Pao.

Concepts Computer has recently ended the Year of the Dragon with a couple of successful expos (NewXpo 2013, Consumer Fair and also the recent “Better Hearing, Better Living” Charity Bazaar). They will be back again for the upcoming Consumer Fair in mid-year.

Education UK 2013 Exhibition

This is one of the most sought fairs when it comes to education in the UK. We have three big players – British Council, HRD Services and James Hon. Today was British Council where it held the biggest education for Bruneians to study in the UK. I still remember a few years ago the fair was just on a small scale. Recently it has gone bigger and better and even the set up has been given more attention to it. According to Rob Fenn, the British High Commissioner to Brunei, he said that today’s education fair is the best.

The Education UK Exhibition was opened today at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Hotel and Country Club and tomorrow will be at the Maktab Duli from 9:30am to 1pm. This year around 41 British universities and colleges are taking part. Also present are the Ministry of Education (Scholarship Unit and National Accreditation Council), the Centre for British teachers (CfBT). Seminars were also run concurrently for potential students to get familiar with the surroundings in the UK.

Those who registered for the event also stood a chance to win an iPad 2 and the British Council gave away four today.

Rob Fenn said that the synergy and the relationship between Brunei Darussalam and the UK have been very strong for many years and the UK has a reputation to maintain. “Brunei has many resources and they (the students) can go anywhere they like and the fact that they have chosen the UK consistently over the years. This also explains why there is the British Universities Brunei Association (BUBA) and there is no other country in the world that other universities organised themselves like BUBA.”

Fenn also talked about the collaboration with UBD and the UK with regards to the Discovery programs at UBD. He said that there are many factors why the UK is a popular destination for studies among Bruneians. He felt that Bruneians want to have the best education and the universities in the UK offered the best courses. When it comes to job interviews, students carrying a UK degree holds more weight.

The factor that drives Bruneians to the UK is the homely community it has. Currently, they are roughly 2,000 students in the UK and there are many local student associations to give support to students and hence making the experience much more worthwhile in the UK.

“This is the fifth or sixth education fair that I have been to and this is the best and it was such a perfect timing as many already have just received their results. So this was brilliant planning. With the slogan Ignite Your Future, I do hope in some of the conversations between the respective universities and the students, something will click and their future will ignite and the students will be set on a wonderful journey through education to a prosperous future,” said Fenn.

There was quite a turn out today and it was also a good thing that the results were released a few days before the education fair. I remember last year when the results were delayed and it was challenging for the students to scout for the courses and universities. So it was good thing that the results came out during CNY eve.

Well done to the British Council for putting up another great event year by year.

It was quite a queue and Hui Chiet was queueing too. I’m not sure what courses she’s interested in :p

The Ugly Truth

RA says Happy New Love Day to all friends and family *lol* The word “V” is a very sensitve one in our culture. I remember years, years back, it was kinda liberal when the “V” word was acceptable. Nowadays, retailers and especially restaurants have been warned on using such word. However the Happy Heart’s Day slogan was given the green light for those establishments who want to highlight their promotion.

There’s always a controversy whenever Malays celebrate this particular occasion. Then again this is a very subjective topic to talk about and I don’t want to go into depth of this topic as I could be quoting or saying the wrong things and I get the fingers being pointed at *lol* All I can say is that Muslims are not encourage to celebrate V-day.

For the record, I did celebrate one or twice long, long time ago *lol* and this was back when laws weren’t strict or perhaps we had lack of awareness or education on what’s acceptable and what’s not. Anyway, that was long time ago and I have grown out of it.

For those celebrating it especially the non-Muslims, don’t use this day as an excuse to express your love or feelings. Love is unconditional and love should be celebrated every moment. Maybe those who are shy (like me) might take advantage of such days like this *lol* For me, I’m living in self-love and from there, I’m able to love others as well. Sometimes I feel love is an over-rated word and I rather feel it than say or express it.

So today I’m gonna love myself even more and do more self appreciation and be grateful for the things that have come my way and appreciate the abundance and the friendship I have gained along the way. That’s my mini-intention for today 😀

I woke up pretty early today to catch the Real Madrid-Manchester United match and I couldn’t sleep after. So I tuned in to HBO and they were playing romanatic comedies such as Wedding Singer, My Best Friend’s Wedding and now Notting Hill’s playing. But my best rom-com for me is still Love Actually 😀

Below are some of my favourite rom-com movies

Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Love Actually
500 Days of Summer
50 First Dates
Notting Hill
When Harry Met Sally
You’re the Apple of My Eye
A Werewolf Boy
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Moulin Rouge
Ghost
Titanic

Below are some of my favourite love songs

Endless Love – Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
Goo Goo Dolls – Iris
Because I Love You – Celine Dion
Have I Told You Lately – Rod Stewart
Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton
Close To You – Carpenters
Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol
A Thousand Years – Christina Perri
Can You Feel The Love Tonight? – Elton John
More Than Words – Extreme
This I Promise You – ‘NSYNC

Ok, I’m being extra cheesy today, right? *LOL* Have a great day peeps and I hope I haven’t offended anyone on this article and you know it ain’t my intention.

The Ugly Truth

RA says Happy New Year to all my Chinese friends and families. This is the third day of Chinese New Year, the Year of the Snake. I do wonder if I actually fall under the Year of the Dragon because my birth month is January, before the lunar calendar. Ah, I’m not really familiar with Chinese horoscopes. Anyway from my research, the year of the Snake means you are smart and intelligent.

Today I won’t be doing any house visits unless I do a “Bainian” where I simply visit my friends though they don’t officially host open houses. This is what I practised during Hari Raya festive season as I feel that it’s way better to connect or catch up with friends without much interruption. Well, I have planned to do some but for today I feet I need to recover after a hectic two day of house visiting.

There are a few open house invitations that I’ve missed (sorry Rach, Edward, Anthony & Celia) and yea, I don’t feel nice either whenever I missed invitations. I have new respect for High Commissioners and Ambassadors (to Brunei) and even those in the high ministerial ranks. This is because most of them will make an effort to complete all their CNY invitations within a short span of time. I don’t think I can manage that milestone though I ever did during my Hari Raya days few years back. So to you guys, hats off and pat on the back.

Speaking of CNY, is it true that Lion Dance performances are allowed in the first three days of CNY? I remembered last year a ruling was given where they were only allowed to perform for three days and the same ruling is imposed for this year if I’m not mistaken. Some of the Chinese community did share their views last year that the 3 day was a bit too short. My suggestion would be to increase the number of days perhaps if it’s not conflicting with any religious events or periods.

Today I will be catching Stephen Chow’s Journey to the West and I can’t wait for this comedy flick and I am also a big fan of Stephen Chow. His best movie for me is still Shaolin Soccer and I was kinda disappointed with CJ7 and did you know that he co-produced Dragonball Evolution?? Another terrible movie *lol* Recently Kung Fu Hustle’s being shown in Astro and that’s a good lame-ass comedy flick. Now this one is interesting.. Stephen Chow will be producing a remake of 3 Idiots which is one of the biggest Bollywood hits back in 2009. Interesting…. Let’s hope the remake won’t spoil the original movie because that’s one hell of a good movie..

Before I end, have a great week ahead.. Sorry if my segment today of the Ugly Truth didn’t bring much hype. I’m still in dazed state (lack of sleep). Oh yea, for those who got married last Sunday, congratulations. Only one wedding didn’t materialise on that day. Happy Tuesday peeps.. Now it’s time to shower and get ready 😀

How I spent my Monday

Ok, it’s not a great idea to jog in the morning especially when you start after 7:30am *lol* One reason – it’s too freaking hot and it does make a difference to the distance you are running. Fina and I only managed to run half of the usual distance due to the morning heat.

Yummm.. After our jogs, we had Pop Juice at Countrypatch Times Square. Did you know that this Pop Juice (Orange juice + Pamelo) is one of my favourite drinks? I started the phenomena of ice-blended version and now Countrypatch starts charging 10 cents extra for that request. Hmmmm..

Am I always catching this at the wrong time? My previous visit was two nights ago and it was already deflated *lol* This time I might have come too early. Ok, I’m just kidding about this so you guys won’t force me if you see me next time with the bouncer within my sight :p

Fina and I headed to The Mall, thinking Best Eastern would be open by 10am and only to find out we still have 30 minutes to kill. So here’s a good suggestion if you want kill time. Go to the foyer of the Mall Cineplex and catch the latest trailers. I’ve noticed one of the TVs have been repositioned so people won’t be sitting down on the stairs. You still can but the angle viewing won’t be as great.

I only had an hour’s rest before heading to Michelle house which was our gathering point to surprise birthday celebrant Thomas who lives just minutes away. This is a picture of the Awesome Foursome but we all have moved on and yes, we are all awesome individuals indeed 😀

My buddies outside Thomas’ home for the surprise visit

Happy Birthday Thomas and did you know he loves Doraemon so much?

I told Thomas not to forget to frame this picture up at his new home *lol*

The next pitstop was at Jin Wei/Sabrina/Cecilia’s Open house at Subok. Michelle with the host Jin Wei.

Sabrina the host with Andrew and Kathy *spelling* and Andrew Caie is a former British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam (2002-2005) and we had a good long chat a few days ago and I’ve learnt so many interesting things along the way.

The next pitstop was at Leonard’s residence and I met two adorable kids

Jackie and Leonard. See you guys pretty soon 😀

Jackie asked me to be in the photo and I told her I can take one for myself and we did *lol*

The 2nd last pitstop was at YC Lee and Pek Ching’s new residence and it was such a lively evening

Sophia asked me if the main reason to YC’s place was the Egg Tarts :p These KFC Egg Tarts have been the talk of the town. I ended up eating one only. Need to control.

Maya (right) just turned 1 yesterday and she was having a good time at YC’s

Hmmmm interesting phone at YC’s.. Don’t even think about sending a text via this phone

Final pitstop – the Sius.. Finally I get to see fireworks from close range.

We had a lan gaming session. It was fun with multiplayer and teaming up against Zombies in Killing Floor.

I was forced to wear this for photo purposes. I have yet to name my alter ego persona *lol*

ITB “B” claimed 3rd

What an anti-climax match!! Last night the 3rd play-off match kicked off for the At-tamwil University Cup 2013. I missed the second half but that’s where all the tense moments were. Brunei Polytechnic was already leading 2-1 for the last 25 minutes before Sarif of ITB “B” scored a dramatic equaliser in the dying minutes to lead the match into extra-time. It was close yet so far for Brunei Polytechnic. ITB “B” eventually scored the winning goal through Hafiy Danan in the 103rd minute in extra-time.

Tonight the final match will be between undefeated UBD “A” and ITB “A” which will take place at 8pm at the Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium. Come let’s support the match and the players involved. Good luck to both sides and may the best men win 🙂

Home renovated

Leung Wai Kaen, a 70 year old Chinese man, was honoured to have his home renovated as his home was previously in a bad state and it was considered unsafe either. Hence with the help of the Brunei-Muara District Office and Rotary Club, Wai Kaen managed to have a much more comfortable home to live in.

The renovation costs BND12,000. The handover was done yesterday with the presence of the Brunei-Muara District Officer Hj Jamain Momin who handed the keys to Wai Kaen.

Poor Beyonce

I guess you might have seen on websites and social media on the recent photo of Beyonce’s bad photo moment during the recent half-time Superbowl performance. Some said it might be photoshopped but I don’t think it was. I won’t be surprised the image will be used for 9GAG and memes. Oh well, sometimes it’s really hard to execute the dos and donts. It’s just one of those days…

Egg tarts at KFC

I can’t believe it’s here already.. I have been craving for so long for the KFC Egg Tarts and they are best sellers regionally and I’m glad it’s here in Brunei. For your info, the egg tarts are only available in Yayasan outlet. So do take note..

The Egg tarts are called Portuguese Egg Tarts which comes all the way form Macau, Hong Kong. The original recipe comes from Maraget Sow.

Now you can buy a box for $7.20 (six pieces) or $1.30 per piece.. Or with any purchase from KFC, one piece will be $1.20. For now, they have one oven at Yayasan and the reason being is that KFC Brunei wants to make sure the quality is there and yes, I have to say the quality is the same and I love it 😀

AJ training the KFC staff on how to bake the Egg Tarts

Steps might look easy but it’s important to give attention to standard of procedure to ensure the highest quality for the egg tarts

So far this is the special oven that makes the egg tarts so just a word of warning that with huge demands, the orders might be slightly slow.. But not to worry as KFC will be having bigger ovens and the next outlet rumoured to serve egg tarts is Airport Mall. I shall update you on that :))

The egg tarts take at least 10-15 minutes to bake to ensure the right result and quality

Del Goh, General Manager of KFC Brunei helping out with the egg tarts prepartion

I love the packaging and yes, it’s very hot indeed!!! So you have to wait a while to cool down and the Portuguese Egg Tarts is only available at KFC Yayasan outlet.

Seng Yee and I shared the egg tarts… Yummy!!!!

One way to cool down the egg tarts!!! *LOL*

Afternoons are now spent with TV, video games, and the internet. Parents are busier than ever and families eat fewer home-cooked meals. But the good news is that by making just a few lifestyle changes, we can help the younger generation lead healthier lives and thats why Fitness Zone is here in Brunei to encourage and motivate everyone in any possible way especially through the connection of doing sports activities.”
